Zoo refutes Hamster Society's accusations of cruelty

Mandai Wildlife Group has refuted claims that fancy rats under its care are «behaving abnormally» or lacking fresh air following accusations of animal cruelty. Its response comes after Hamster Society Singapore (HSS) posted Instagram photos and videos of the rats, showing them sniffing the air holes and gaps in their enclosure at the Singapore Zoo. The rats can also be seen climbing on top of one other while scrabbling for the air spaces. Tagging Mandai Wildlife Group – which manages the zoo – in its «public service announcement (PSA)» on Thursday (Jan 26), HSS appealed for more air holes to be provided for the rats. HSS said it was notified of «a family of more than 20 rats» under the care of the Singapore Zoo that were «acting abnormally, putting their noses to breathe through the fine holes and gaps in the edges» despite living in a large enclosure. «At times they can be seen climbing on top of each other to do so,» HSS said in its Instagram post. "The staff explained that the rats were 'looking for fresh air', and as the rats are confined, the staff will open the acrylic box for 30 minutes a day.

'I told him to stop': CGH patient accuses doctor of ignoring him when conducting 'painful' penis examination

This man's recent medical examination at Changi General Hospital (CGH) was brief, but it was the most painful minute he has ever experienced. But even amidst cries of discomfort, the doctor continued pulling down the foreskin of the patient's penis to «check for sexually-transmitted diseases (STD)». In an interview with AsiaOne on Wednesday (Jan 25), the 39-year-old man, who declined to reveal his identity, shared that he was at CGH a week ago. He had made an appointment there after realising that it would take him up to 20 seconds to pass urine. «The doctor told me to lie down on the bed to examine me. He then pressed the side of my penis and asked if I felt pain. I said no,» the recent patient at CGH said. The consultation was going well, according to the man, who works in the security industry. But he felt uncomfortable when the doctor pulled the foreskin of his penis. Describing the pain he felt at that time, the man recounted: «I shouted loudly and asked what he was doing. »When I told him to stop, he ignored me and continued pulling my penis."

Woman who failed O-level English twice tries to become pre-school principal, jailed for forgery

SINGAPORE - She took her O-level examinations twice as a teenager, but failed to obtain a passing grade for her English Language paper on both occasions. Angela Zhong Anqi, 43, got a D7 grade for the subject both times after taking the exams in 1996 and 1997. Despite this, she applied to be the principal of Al-Amin Pre-school (Tampines) Kindergarten and submitted documents that included a fake O-level certificate. On Feb 13, 2019, Al-Amin submitted an online application to the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) to register her as a centre principal. Zhong was caught after the agency conducted checks in 2019 and discovered that four of her documents could not be verified. An ECDA manager alerted the police on June 7, 2019. On Thursday, Zhong pleaded guilty to two forgery charges and was sentenced to two weeks’ jail. Deputy Public Prosecutor Wong Shiau Yin said the ECDA serves as the regulatory and developmental agency for the early childhood education sector in Singapore. It is an autonomous agency jointly overseen by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of Social and Family Development.

Understaffed, short runway, bad weather: String of complaints as Noel Gifts fails to deliver CNY hampers

Failed to receive or send your Chinese New Year gift hamper last week? Evidently, you're not alone. A number of customers have taken to Facebook and Google Reviews to voice their frustration over the non-delivery of their CNY gift hampers from Noel Gifts. It seems the hampers did not arrive on the stipulated delivery dates earlier this month (January 2023). According to one Prudy Yeow, she placed an order for a hamper on Dec 26, 2022, for delivery on Jan 15, 2023. However, the hamper did not arrive on the day and remained undelivered as at Jan 18. There were no calls or text alerts from Noel Gifts about the non-delivery. Yeow said that when she sent WhatsApp messages to Noel Gifts for updates, she did not receive any specific delivery date. Instead, the company simply apologised and said they were experiencing «overwhelming» orders. Another customer, Louis Liu, said he had placed an order for Jan 9, but was not informed when the delivery failed to arrive on the day. Similarly, Liu has yet to receive any specific answers or dates regarding his delivery.
