At the meeting held in the evening hours of today at the Jeddah Palace, the two leaders discussed a number on developing bilateral relations and ways of enhancing them as well as on issues of interest to both countries. The meeting was attended by senior government official of both countries. It is to be recalled that in recognition of the bold and courageous initiative they took to bring about peace and friendship between the two countries, President Isaias Afwerki and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed have been presented by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Saudi Arabia's highest medal «The Order of King Abdulaziz» on 16 September.

Asmara, 16 September 2018 - In recognition of the vision, courage and statesmanship they demonstrated to end war and bring about peace between the two countries, President Isaias Afwerki and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed have been presented by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Saudi Arabia's highest medal «The Order of King Abdulaziz» today, 16 September. The award was presented during a ceremony King Salman bin Abdul Aziz of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia hosted in Jeddah in the presence of Mr. Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary General, Shiekh Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and Minister of Defense, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and others. At the event, President Isaias Afwerki and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed signed the Jeddah Peace Accord in the presence of King Salman, other Saudi dignitaries and UNSG. At the ceremony, Mr. Osman Saleh, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Yemane Ghebreab, Presidential Advisor, were also present. President Isaias Afwerki left for Jeddah in the afternoon hours of yesterday, 15 September, to attend the ceremony that was hosted by King Salman bin Abdul Aziz of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Upon arrival at the Jeddah International Airport, President Isaias was awarded warm welcome by Amir Khalid bin Faisal Saud, Governor of Mecca, and other officials. President Isaias Afwerki and Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed signed five pillars joint declaration of peace and friendship on 9 July in Asmara. In recognition of the vision, courage and statesmanship they demonstrated to end war and bring about peace between the two countries, the two leaders were also awarded with the highest Abu Dhabi honor “The Zayed Award” on 24 July 2018.

President Isaias Afwerki yesterday received in Adi-Halo representatives of Amhara Regional State headed by the Speaker of the Regional Assembly, Ms. Worksew Mamo. Asmara, 14 September 2018 - President Isaias Afwerki yesterday received in Adi-Halo representatives of Amhara Regional State headed by the Speaker of the Regional Assembly, Ms. Worksew Mamo.The representatives stated that the objective of the visit is to express appreciation for the peace agreement reached between the leaders of both countries and make due contribution in the implementation of the agreement. They further explained that the peace agreement would make significant contribution to highlighting the image of the two countries.Noting that friendly and peaceful  neighborhood has been restored between the two peoples, the representatives expressed readiness to promote a new era of friendship and cooperation to posterity. They further voiced appreciation for the support the people and Government of Eritrea extended to the Ethiopian people at a time of need.Underlining that both leaders crystallized the aspirations of the peoples of Eritrea and Ethiopia, President Isaias noted that in order to consolidate peace between the two peoples, road linkage has begun at the border points of Debai-Sima- Bure and Serha-Zalambessa roads and that it will be extended to other crossing points.Ms. Worksew also stated that initiatives are being taken to make up lost opportunities of the past 20 years including the commencement of air, maritime, road and telecommunication services. Mr. Sameh Shoukry delivered message of President Abdul Fatah Sisi to President Isaias Afwerki. President Isaias Afwerki and Foreign Minister Sameh also discussed on the peace and friendship accord signed by Eritrea and Ethiopia as well as on the implementation of the tripartite agreement signed between Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. Indicating that President Isaias Afwerki and President Al Sisi have common position on most of the issues raised, Mr. Sameh said that strengthening bilateral relations between Eritrea and Egypt will have significant contribution in the development of economic and security sectors and others as well as in the peace process in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea basin. The Presidential Advisor Mr. Yemane Gebreab on his part stated that the visit of Mr. Sameh Shoukry is in continuation of the continuous meetings and consultations between the two countries and that Egypt has important role in the peace and stability in the region. Mr. Yemane also underlined that Eritrea supports the effort of President Abdul Fattah Sisi to restore the role of Egypt in the region. Massawa, 12 September 2018 – Reports indicate that encouraging outcome is being registered from the awareness raising campaigns being exerted in the Nakfa sub zone with the objective of eradicating harmful traditional practices that endanger the physical and psychological welfare of the society and that of females in particular. The comment was made during an activity assessment meeting the committees of welfare of the 12 administrative areas of the sub zone conducted in Nakfa town on 6 September. According to a statistical report presented at the meeting, the awareness raising campaign played significant role in enhancing the awareness of the society on modern health science and that the greater number of pregnant women are delivering in health facilities. Speaking at the event, Mr. Zedengel Giorgis, head of Family and Community Affairs in the branch, stated that eradicating harmful practices is fundamental element in ensuring the social welfare of the society and called on the society to increasing contribution in the effort being exerted to eradicate harmful practices. The Administrator of the Nakfa sub zone, Mr. Yakob Idris on his part, stating that encouraging outcome has been registered called on the committees and health practitioners to exert strong effort. Documents indicate that in Nakfa sub zone there are health institutions in Indila, Agrae, Laba and Nakfa.

The Ministry of Marine Resources and Diving Service Center are taking initiative to control environmental pollution that is negatively affecting marine bio-diversity. Massawa, 12 September 2018- The Ministry of Marine Resources and Diving Service Center are taking initiative to control environmental pollution that is negatively affecting marine bio-diversity. Member of the Diving Service Center, Mr. Petros Russom the activity being initiated to protect the bio-diversity will continue until the desired result is achieved. Indicating that environmental pollution in general and that marine negatively affects the reproduction of fishes, Mr. Tesfa’alem Arefe, member of the Ministry of Marine Resources, on his part said that integrated effort is being conducted to control the environmental pollution before it affected the marine bio-diversity.  He also called on the public and especially the youth to acquaint themselves with the marine resources and play due part in protecting them. Mr. Semere Yohannes, head of Environment at the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment branch in the Northern Red Sea region, commending the initiative being taken by the Ministry of Marine Resources and Diving Service Center, called on others to follow their example. Mr. Semere reiterated that environmental pollution has become global concern and that rigorous awareness raising programs are being conducted.

The Debai-Sima-Bure and Serha-Zalambessa roads that have been closed for 20 years are important roads transporting people and goods from and to Eritrea-Ethiopia and especially goods from Assab and Massawa ports. The event was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Osman Saleh, Presidential Adviser, Mr. Yemane Gebreab, Maj. Gen. Humed Mohammed Karikare and Ambassador Mohammed-Seid Mantai, Governor of the Southern Red Sea region on the Eritrean side and Mr. Demeke Mokonnen, Deputy Prime Minister and Gen. Seare Mokennen, Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian Armed Forces on the Ethiopian side. At the ceremony held to re-open the Debai-Sima-Bure road, the two leaders were accorded warm welcome by the Sultan of Rahaita, Mr. Abdulkadir Dawud, village elders, religious leaders as well as by members of the Armed Forces of the two countries. In the same vein, President Isaias Afwerki and Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed in the afternoon hours of today, 11 September accompanied by the high level delegations and members of the Armed Forces as well as a number of nationals of both countries officially opened the Serha-Zalambessa road. His Holiness Abune Lukas, General Secretary of the Eritrean Tewahdo Orthodox Church, gave benediction in connection with the Geez New Year. Asmara, 10 September 2018- His Holiness Abune Lukas, General Secretary of the Eritrean Tewahdo Orthodox Church, gave benediction in connection with the Geez New Year. The General Secretary of the Synod wished Eritrean nationals at home and abroad, as well as members of the EDF and the faithful a Happy Geez New Year. He also called on the faithful to extend hands to the sick and needy nationals. Moreover, His Holiness Abune Lukas gave detailed briefings regarding the historical background of the religious event. Asmara, 09 September 2018- The National Festival 2018 which was under way for nine days from 31 August concluded yesterday, 8 September with great fervor. At the concluding ceremony held at the Expo compound prizes have been handed over to winners of various competitions. During the closing session in which senior government and Front officials, representatives of National Associations and invited guests took part, the Commissioner of Culture and Sports, Ambassador Zemede Tekle stated that the national festival is playing significant role as a platform of unity and diversity as well as in preserving culture of the society. He also noted that this year’s festival is unique for it was conducted during promising peace prospect prevailing in the region and called on all parties to enhance contribution in conducting future national festivals with greater vigor and preparation. Following the detailed report and assessment on the overall activities conducted during the National Festival, regional administrations, institutions and individuals that registered excellence at the Festival received prizes. According to report, the Gash Barka region received prize for being first in construction of traditional houses, while the Anseba region stood first in the exhibition of household items, and the Southern region received prize for being first in traditional dances and music. The 9-day National Festival 2018 featured a number of programs including exhibitions, artistic and cultural performances, and bazaar shows, performances by youth cultural troupes, cultural troupes from the six regions, educational and entertainment programs as well as children’s pavilion.

Asmara, 08 September 2018 – College of Arts and Social Sciences and College of Business and Economics that are located in Adi Keih have jointly graduated 521 students in Masters, 1st Degree, Diploma and Certificate on 8 September. Reports indicate that the College of Arts and Social Sciences has graduated a total of 238 students of which 12 in Masters Degree, 164 in BA degree, 40 in Diploma and 22 with Certificate. The students are graduated from various fields of studies including Geography, Sociology and Archeology, English, Eritrean Languages and Literature, History, Law, Political Sciences and International Relations, Social Sciences and Sociology, Journalism and Mass Communications as well as Fine Arts. The College of Business and Economics graduated 283 students including 131 in 1st Degree and 152 in Diploma in various fields of studies including Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration, Accounting, Economics, Tourism and Hotel Management. Indicating that the Eritrean people have emerged victorious against successive enemy conspiracies, the Minister of Tourism, Ms. Askalu Menkorius said that graduation burdens the graduates with greater responsibility as it is being commenced during a new era of peace. The Dean of the College of Arts and Social Sciences, Dr. Weldetensae Tewelde on his part stated that 1710 students are enrolled in the College and that its capacity is being enhanced thanks to the cooperation of the Government and the Front as well as the partnership of various international higher education institutions. Noting that providing free of charge education is the fundamental principle of the Government and that strong effort is being exerted to ensure social justice, the Dean of the College of Business and Economics Dr. Estifanos Hailemariam called on the graduates to live up to expectations in the nation building endeavor. Representatives of the graduates also expressed conviction to compensate the people and government of Eritrea with all effort at this hopeful period. Asmara, 07 September 2018 – Eritrean nationals residing in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and Los Angeles, the USA, have commemorated the 57th Anniversary of the armed struggle for Eritrea’s independence with enthusiasm. At the commemoration event nationals residing in Jeddah and its environs conducted on 30 August, the head of Public and Community Affairs, Mr. Saleh Mahmud Sabe delivered briefing on the significance of the Day and called for the reinforcement and transfer of the noble values cultivated during the thirty years of armed struggle for independence. The program was highlighted by cultural and artistic performances. In related news, Eritrean nationals residing in Los Angeles and its environs have enthusiastically commemorated the 57th Anniversary of the armed struggle for Eritrea’s independence on 1st September. At the event, the nationals expressed readiness to play due part in the nation building drives. In the meanwhile, the organization of the YPFDJ in Juba-South Sudan, conducted a workshop on 2 September aimed at increasing the understanding of national on the country’s legal system. The workshop, which was led by legal expert Mr. Amanuel Iyasu, covered several issues, inter alia, the significance and meaning of law, institutions of law, establishment of judicial body, relation of law and society, judicial obligations, as well as the obligations and rights of citizens. The joint high-level committee is composed of Mr. Osman Saleh, Foreign Minister of Eritrea, Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, Foreign Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Ahmed Isse Awad. The visit of the joint committee is the first initiative of the High-Level committee established by the three countries at the tripartite summit and Joint Declaration on Comprehensive Cooperation between Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea. During the discussion he held with the joint high-level committee at his office,  President Ismail Omar Guelleh thanked President Isaias Afwerki for the initiative he has taken. President Guelleh stated that Djibouti is ready for reconciliation & normalization of its ties with Eritrea. He also appreciated Ethiopia and Somalia for their role in bringing together Eritrea and Djibouti. Eritrea's Foreign Minister Osman Saleh conveyed President Isaias's greetings to President Ismael Omar Guelleh and underlined that «this is the season for peace in the Horn of Africa and this peace should be inclusive to all». Both parties have agreed that both countries will conduct meetings and visits in the future.

The Commercial Ship has the capacity of loading 12 thousand tons and is expected to load and leave the port within 20 hours. Mr. Aman Goitom from the office of Malaria Control indicated that rigorous effort and follow up is being conducted to preserve the achievements so far gained and to register further developments until the prevalence of malaria is fully eradicated. Pointing out that the main causes of malaria are lack of environmental sanitation, improper use bed nets, patients late coming to health facilities as well as improper use of medicines, Mr. Aman said that eradication of malaria requires increased awareness of the public and called for integrated effort on the part of all stakeholders. Mr. Aman also called for going to health facilities within 24 hours in case of feeling malaria symptom, proper use of medicine as well as conducting environmental sanitation programs. It is to be recalled that the Ministry of Health is distribution impregnated bed nets to the public every three years free of charge.

The 44 member delegation led by the Chairman of the Confederation of Ethiopian Trade Unions, Mr. Kasahun Filo met and held talks with Mr. Tekeste Baire, Chairman of the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers, and other officials of the confederation on the development of bilateral relations. Asmara, 03 September 2018- A new book on the life history of Patriot Hamid Idris Awate, the pioneer of the armed struggle for Eritrean Independence, was inaugurated on 01 September. The 500 pages book was written by Mr. Haileselasie Woldu in connection with the 57th anniversary of the armed struggle for Eritrea’s independence. Indicating the author had to go through for collecting information about the history of Patriot Hamid Idris Awate, Mr. Alemseged Tesfai, author and researcher, said that the book was first of its kind in narrating the life history of individuals and that will encourage others to follow the example. Presenting a review of the book, Mr. Salahdin Ali, member of PFDJ Research and Documentation Center, said that the book narrates in a dramatic way the history of Hamid Idris Awate from his family background to the time he fired the first bullet signaling the beginning of the armed struggle for independence. The author of the book, Mr. Haileselasie Woldu expressed appreciation for those who provided valuable information and those that encouraged him to write the book and presented a copy as a gift to the family members of Idris Awate.

According to Nurse Yemane Mebrahtu, encouraging outcome is being registered in eradicating harmful practices and inculcating scientific awareness, owing to the child and mother vaccination program as well as health-oriented campaigns the center is conducting. He further said that although the number of pregnant women coming to the health center is increasing, the number of pregnant women delivering at the center is only 30% and thus strong effort is required of all concerned bodies. At the meeting conducted on 24 August, in which heads of the regional administration and health practitioners took part, reports on the quality and expansion of health services, campaigns conducted to raise the awareness of the residents and the progress registered, human resources development, medical supplies, efforts being exerted to prevent communicable diseases and their outcomes were presented. According to the report praiseworthy coverage of child vaccinations and diagnosis on pregnant women was conducted, albeit the number of pregnant women delivering in health institutions wasn’t as expected. The comment was made by Mr. Semere Russom, Minister of Education, at an annual educational activity assessment meeting held today, 29 August at the Sawa Warsai Yikealo Secondary School and Vocational Training Center. Pointing out that educational policy is measured by the outcome registered Minister Semere said that critical assessment on the implementation of programs will have significant contribution in designing viable and practical educational programs. Minister Semere also called for due attention on the 8th and 12th grade national examinations. Indicating that 58.2% of the participants of the 8th grade national examination have registered passing marks, Minister Semere said that counting numbers is not enough and that should be measured by the effort made to produce competent students. Mr. Semere also indicated that in this year’s matriculation exam 27.8% have registered passing marks for degree and diploma programs and 15.7% for certificate and that demonstrates the commendable progress being registered. Minister Semere went on to say that no-peace no-war situation has been the main bottleneck in the progress education and called for integrated effort for better outcome with the new era of peace prospect.

A workshop on developing cloth design as part of the national cultural identity and capacity of designers was held on 25 August. Asmara, 28 August 2018 - A workshop on developing cloth design as part of the national cultural identity and capacity of designers was held on 25 August. The workshop was attended by the Commission of Culture and Sports, cloth designers, fashion show experts as well as models. According to the research papers presented at the workshop, fashion shows and cloth designs have been influenced by the western culture and the awareness of the public was very low and that has hindered the desired development of that sector. The research paper presenters called for fashion show organizers and cloth designers so that they would be able to engage in the development of culture oriented cloth designs and play due part in transferring the noble cultural values of the society. The participants of the workshop held discussion on the research papers presented and for due attention to the cultures and traditions of the Eritrean society. Speaking at the event, Ambassador ZemedeTekle, Commissioner of Culture and Sports, praised the initiative and expressed readiness that the commission will stand alongside them in all their endeavors to develop fashion shows and cloth designs in relevance with the Eritrean people’s cultural perspective.

TPDM Reaches Peace Agreement with Ethiopian Government

The Tigray People’s Democratic Movement (TPDM) has reached an agreement with the government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to continue its movement through peaceful means. Asmara, 28 August 2018 - The Tigray People’s Democratic Movement (TPDM) has reached an agreement with the government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to continue its movement through peaceful means. The meeting of the two sides held today, 28 August, in Asmara was attended by an Ethiopian government delegation headed by General Adem Mohammed, Director of the Ethiopian National Intelligence and Security Agency and the Chairman of the TPDM, Mr. Mekonen Tesfai. According to the agreement reached, the Tigray People’s Democratic Movement, recognizing the prevailing changes in Ethiopia, will conduct its political activities in Ethiopia through peaceful means.A delegation from the TPDM will also travel to Ethiopia to discuss the implementation of the agreement. Noting that the TPDM has been struggling for the change that is currently prevailing in Ethiopia, Mr. Mekonnen Tesfai said that further discussion will be conducted in Addis Ababa. Member of the delegation of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Mr. Tefera Deribew, indicated that encouraged by the current development in Ethiopia, several opposition organizations have decided to continue their political activities through peaceful means inside the country. He also noted that the meeting with the Tigray People’s Democratic Movement was a success.

The 2018/2019 academic year has officially began in the Warsai-Yikealo School in Sawa today, 27 August. Sawa, 27 August 2018- The 2018/2019 academic year has officially began in the Warsai-Yikealo School in Sawa today, 27 August. The director of the school, Mr. Kelit Girmai said that over the past 17 years the school has provided educational service to over 200 thousand students and that the objective of the school is to nurture competitive students that could join higher education institutions, vocational schools and other training centers. Indicating that the school is working in strong cooperation with the National Service Training Center, Mr. Kelit sports and cultural activities, general knowledge competitions, debates as well seminars and other programs are being conducted as part of the education process. Mr. Kelit also called on the students to demonstrate excellence in their academic studies adhering to the principles of discipline and complementarities among one other. The Commander of the National Service Training Center, Col. Debesai Ghide on his part said that all basic social service provision are put in place in Sawa and called on the students to live up to expectations.
