One person died following a fire that broke out in a Choa Chu Kang Housing Board flat in the wee hours of Sept 24. In a Facebook post, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said firefighters from Bukit Batok Fire Station and Woodlands Fire Station were alerted to a fire at 692A, Choa Chu Kang Crescent at about 6am. “The fire involved the living room and a bedroom of a unit on the ninth floor. Firefighters had to conduct forcible entry to gain access into the unit. “The fire was extinguished with a water jet and two Compressed Air Foam backpacks. As a result of the fire, the rest of the unit also sustained heat and smoke damage,” said SCDF. One person was found inside one of the bedrooms and carried out of the unit by firefighters during the operation. The person was pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic, said SCDF, adding that here were no one else inside the affected unit. About 150 residents were evacuated from the block by police and SCDF as a precautionary measure. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Responding to queries from The Straits Times, Qihua Primary School said in a statement on Sept 23 that it was aware of the incident, has counselled the affected pupils, and is working closely with their parents to ensure the well-being of all who were involved. It added: «We have also reminded our students to look out for one another and to report any incidents of bullying to their teachers.» The school and Education Ministry did not give further details, including when the incident occurred and when it was reported. A 43-second video of the incident shared via Telegram on Sept 20 shows a boy wearing a black T-shirt punching a smaller, uniformed boy in the gut twice. In the background, another person can be heard saying «Again, again» in Malay. The pupil gets up after sinking to the ground, and receives more blows from the larger boy, who also kicks him in the stomach.

Iswaran pleads guilty to amended charges at start of trial

[UPDATE 10.45am] Iswaran has pleaded guilty to five charges in court at the start of his trial on Tuesday (Sept 24) morning. «Your Honour, I plead guilty,» he told Justice Vincent Hoong, who is presiding over the case. In a turn of events, the prosecution amended the charges, dropping two charges for corruption against Iswaran. They proceeded with four counts of obtaining valuable items as a public servant under Section 165 of the Penal code, as well as one count of obstructing the course of justice. 30 other charges will be taken in consideration for sentencing. Former transport minister S Iswaran arrived at the High Court at 9.25am on Tuesday (Sept 24) to defend himself against 35 criminal charges. The 62-year-old was accompanied by one of his lawyers Navin Thevar as he entered the premises. Iswaran's legal team is headed by heavyweight Senior Counsel Davinder Singh.
