While cooking some frozen 'tang yuan' (glutinous rice balls), a customer discovered some «green stuff» on several of the sweet rice balls, which turned out to be mould. Taking to Facebook group Complaint Singapore on Tuesday (July 16), the shopper said he had bought two packs of the Spring Home brand product from the FairPrice outlet at Yew Tee Point. Both packs expire in May 2025, and only one pack was affected, he added. Photos accompanying his post show dark green spots on several of the frozen glutinous rice balls. He said he bought the items over a month ago. The customer subsequently contacted food manufacturer Tee Yih Jia, which said in an email reply to him that their quality assurance and control team observed «serious mould growth» on the glutinous rice balls, which indicates that there is «a broken cold chain». The cold chain is the maintenance of temperature-sensitive food products at the correct temperature across the supply chain process to ensure food safety and quality.
SINGAPORE - A 33-year-old motorcyclist died after an accident involving a van on July 20. The police were alerted at about 4.45pm on July 20 to an accident in Jurong involving a van and a motorcycle in Jalan Tukang towards Jalan Boon Lay. They said the female motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 53-year-old male van driver was taken conscious to hospital. Police investigations are ongoing. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it rescued a person who was trapped in the driver’s seat of the van, and took the person to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. Another person, who was assessed for minor injuries, declined to be taken to the hospital, added the SCDF. This was the third reported fatal road accident that happened on July 20. A driver was arrested after a 76-year-old pedestrian died in Bukit Batok West that day. In a separate incident, a 40-year-old man died after the van he was driving crashed into the rear of an SMRT bus in Choa Chu Kang. Traffic accidents claimed the lives of 136 people in 2023, up from the 108 deaths in 2022 and the highest since 2016.
SINGAPORE - Mr Shahrul Khan, 25, was concerned about his commute to work at a vaccination centre in Kaki Bukit in the east from his new flat in Tengah in the west. But his worries were eased with the introduction of bus service 871 on July 21. He is pleased that the bus will pass Beauty World MRT station – a convenient route for him to get to work when he and his fiancee move into their new home at the end of 2024. The couple will be living at Parc Clover, situated opposite a new bus interchange that also opened on July 21 in Tengah Boulevard. They travelled to Tengah to check out the new interchange as well as the progress of their new flat. Speaking to The Straits Times, Mr Khan, who lives in the east, said: “When there was talk that a bus interchange was going to be built here, we looked out for which buses were coming here and where they would stop. “The fact that a bus is going to Beauty World station, which is on the Downtown Line, makes it quite efficient and easy for me to go to the east via Bugis station.” The new bus interchange in Tengah is managed by Tower Transit and currently has three bus services – 870, 871 and 992.
