Asmara, 20 February 2020 - President Isaias Afwerki and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz met in Riyadh in the evening hours of yesterday, 19 February and discussed on bilateral relations and on comprehensive Red Sea cooperation. In the meeting, President Isaias underlined the profound economic and social transformation underway in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is of immense significance. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on his part stressed on the need to institutionalize the cooperation among the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden countries to better promote peace and security in order to collectively benefit from the huge human and natural resources and opportunities in the region. The meeting was attended by Mr. Osman Saleh, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Presidential Advisor Mr. Yemane Gebreab on Eritrean side and Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, and State Minister and member of the Cabinet, Dr. Issam bin Saad bin Saeed. President Isaias had also met on 18 February with several Saudi business people that have interest in investing in Eritrea in the sectors of energy, fisheries, agriculture and mining. President Isaias on his part pointing out on the potential economic synergy between the two countries assured the business people that Eritrea welcomes Saudi investment.

The Eritrean Embassy in China indicated that so far no Eritrean student in that country is reported to be infected with the virus COVID-19 (Coronavirus). Asmara, 18 February 2020 – The Eritrean Embassy in China indicated that so far no Eritrean student in that country is reported to be infected with the virus COVID-19 (Coronavirus). Eritrean students at the universities in Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, also stated that even though the lockdown has restricted their movements, they are following every instruction the Government of the Peoples Republic of China is issuing regarding the virus outbreak. The students also commended the effort and follow up of the Eritrean Ambassador in China, Mr. Tsegay Tesfatsion as well as the Government of Eritrea are making to ensure their safety.Universities and Colleges in China have started providing online courses to students for fear of the spread of the virus. There are over 25 Universities and colleges in Wuhan, the main city of China’s Hubei province where the Coronavirus was discovered weeks ago. Wuhan is a city of over 11 million residents.

President Isaias Afwerki departed to Saudi Arabia in the morning hours of today for three-day working visit at an invitation of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saudi. Asmara, 17 February 2020- President Isaias Afwerki departed to Saudi Arabia in the morning hours of today for three-day working visit at an invitation of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saudi. Upon arrival at the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, President Isaias and his delegation was accorded warm welcome by Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz, Governor of Riyadh region, and other senior Saudi Government officials. In the afternoon hours, President Isaias Afwerki met with His Majesty King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in Riyadh. King Salman stressed the long-standing relations and vital common interests between the two countries and the readiness of Saudi Arabia to strengthen mutual cooperation. President Isaias Afwerki on his part thanked King Salman and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for their solidarity with Eritrea and added that Saudi Arabia and the countries of the region have primary responsibility for peace and development of the neighborhood. King Salman also applauded Eritrea's role for peace and regional cooperation in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea. During his stay in Saudi Arabia, President Isaias will discuss with various officials of the Kingdom on strengthening bilateral relations as well as on regional and global issues of interest to the two countries. Commendable contribution in support of families of martyrs

Eritrean nationals residing in various countries expressed that the contribution they are making in support of families of martyrs attest to the respect they have towards their martyrs. Asmara, 14 February 2020- Eritrean nationals residing in various countries expressed that the contribution they are making in support of families of martyrs attest to the respect they have towards their martyrs. Indicating that supporting families of martyrs is the responsibility of every citizen, the nationals in the US, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Germany, the UK, Sweden, Italy, Norway, Israel and Saudi Arabia organized in a group said that they will sustainably continue the program they initiated before three years. Ms. Yodit Asfaha, member of the group from Sweden, said that the about 50 members of the group meet three times per week through the social media and discuss about the objective situation in their homeland and on the national development programs. Ms. Yodit also said that the group has so far contributed about 22 thousand Euros and 56 thousand Kroner. Ms. Yodit indicated that 6 Eritrean women residing in Uppsala, Sweden, have assumed responsibility of supporting 80 families of martyrs for 12 years. Ms. Yodit went on to say that other nationals joined the program and contributed 120,960 Kroner in support of 21 families of martyrs. Ms. Yodit with her daughter Siona Asgede contributed 12 thousand Kroner they collected through various activities they conducted in connection with June 20, Martyrs Day.

Massawa, 14 February 2020- The important heritage being uncovered during the excavation activities at the ancient port city of Adulis are indicators for the over three thousand civilization in the area. The comment was made by the head of the Northern Red Sea region Museum, Mr. Yohannes Gebryesus. According to Mr. Yohannes the excavation program is being conducted at over 40 hectares in sea shores of the ancient port city of Adulis. Mr. Yohannes went on to say that the ancient buildings of worship, coins, graves and other heritage that were discovered attest that the ancient port city of Adulis was the center of trade, religious, cultural and diplomatic activities.Indicating that currently excavation activity is being conducted in seven sites in Adulis, Mr. Yohannes said that so far ancient heritage ranging from 500 to 1000 years of age have been excavated. Pointing out that the Elephant remains believed to be from 27 to 28 million years of age is contributing in the research to determine the origin of Elephants at global level, Mr. Yohannes said that in Buya human skull aged over one million years and human trace aged 800 thousand years have been found and the areas are getting interest by archeologists and other researchers. Mr. Yohannes further said that the Northern Red Sea region is endowed with multiple ancient and historical sites that could have the potential in the development of tourism industry in the country.

The Eritrean community in Israel also conducted activity assessment meeting on 8 February and charted out action plan for 2020. The nationals expressing readiness to shoulder responsibility of supporting the families of the martyrs’ and the war disabled veterans conveyed message of congratulation to the people and Government of Eritrea in connection with the commemoration of the 30th Anniversary of Operation Fenkil. Asmara, 11 February 2020- Eritrea participated at the 33rd African Union summit of heads of State and Government held from 9 to 10 February in Addis Ababa  under the theme “Silencing the Gun: Creating Conducive Condition for Africa’s Development”. The Eritrean delegation was headed by Mr. Biniam Berhe, Charge d’Affiars at the Eritrean Permanent Mission to the African Union. At the opening session report on the objective situation of the African Union was presented by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt. According to the report President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi presented the document for revitalizing the African Union was ratified at the summit of the Executive Ministerial Council, legal protocols for elucidating responsibilities of member countries, the Economic Commission for Africa and African Economic Zones were ratified and the preparation for the operational of the office of the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement in Ghana has been finalized. Likewise extraordinary summit focusing on integrated implementation of the African Free Trade Area will be held in May 2020 in South Africa. Moreover, indicating that that absence of peace and stability are mainly due to the lack of practical measures and interference of external forces, the summit proposed to held extraordinary summit of African leaders in 2020 focusing on struggle against terrorism. South Africa also assumed Chairmanship of the African Union for this year. President of the Republic of South Africa, Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa on his part indicated that he will give priority for the advancement of economic and financial inclusion of women and address gender based violence. The summit also elected Democratic Republic of Congo to become Vice-Chair for 2020 and Chairmanship for 2021, and Mali as Vice Chair from West Africa, Kenya as third Chair from East Africa and Egypt from North Africa as Rapportuere. In related news Eritrea also participated at the 36th meeting of the Executive Ministerial Council of the AU member states that was held from 6 to 8 February. The Ministerial Council has ratified the new structure of the AU, budget and other issues submitted by the permanent representatives.

Massawa, 10 February 2020-  In the second part of the interview with Eri-Tv and Radio Dimtsi Hafash, President Isaias Afwerki gave detailed elaboration on the underlining rationale and phase by phase implementation of new salary scale in the civil service, housing programs for 2020, infrastructural programs to enhance wealth creation and priority development projects for 2020. Regarding the phase by phase implementation of the new salary scale, President Isaias noted that speculative and illicit practices and the subsequent inflationary pressures had rendered the previous salary scale almost nominal. Eventually, President Isaias said that the Government of Eritrea introduced, in tandem with the redemption of the new Nakfa currency, a new five-tier salary scale ranging from 1800 for the lowest rung, to 4000 for the first degree holders as starting benchmarks pending full appraisal of the consumer price index and other vital economic parameters. President Isaias went on to say that, discrepancies in the implementation that may cropped up in the past for those in the lowest rung will be rectified this year in retroactive manner. The remaining phase will be implemented with the completion of the ongoing study on relevant economic variables, President Isaias added. On housing, President Isaias noted on the Government of Eritrea lofty objectives of launching and incrementally expanding the nation-wide programs of home ownership of citizens was not successful in spite of the various initiatives. President Isaias further noted that the Government of Eritrea will pursue this objective with vigor but in 2020 more focus will be given to the completion of the programs already underway.

Half Marathon competition in connection with the 30th anniversary commemoration of Operation Fenkil was held today, 7 February, in the main streets of the port city of Massawa.   Massawa, 7 February 2020- Half Marathon competition in connection with the 30th anniversary commemoration of Operation Fenkil was held today, 7 February, in the main streets of the port city of Massawa. At competition that covered 21 km 90 athletes including 21 females took part. At the half marathon race that was recognized by the International Athletics Federation, athletes from Eritrea, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Tanzania took part. In the men’s race, Athlete Girmai Gebreselasie stood first while Athletes Samson Amare and Yonas Yakob stood second and third while Natsinet Amnauel, Simret Merhawi and Hibret Debesai stood from first to third respectively in the females’ race. The winners were handed over with cups and financial award.

The exhibition was organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense Promotion and Information, Ministry of Marine Resources, the Northern Red Sea administration as well as Mr. Donald Bostrom, Swedish friend of Eritrea. The exhibition includes ancient and historical heritage in the Northern Red Sea region, activities of the Ministry of Marine Resources and their progress, art products by members of the Eritrean Defense Forces as well as the perseverance and life style of freedom fighter and atrocities committed by Ethiopian regimes. The message of President Isaias was focused on development of bilateral relations and regional issues of interest to the two countries including Horn of Africa cooperation. Indicating that with new era unfolding and ample rainfall the anniversary commemoration of Operation Fenkil  makes it special, the owners of the social services provision institutions said that they expect more visitors to come to Massawa and that they are ready to accommodate them. At the graduation ceremony conducted on 26 January, it was stated that the objective of the vocational trainings was to upgrade the professional capacity of the youth and support them become economically self-supportive and role models in their areas. The report was made at a meeting conducted on 27 and 28 January in Barentu. Indicating that as a result of the integrated effort in cooperation with partners the awareness of the public on communicable diseases has increased and that the prevalence of the diseases has been reduced, Dr. Hayelom Kidane, head of the ministry branch in the region, said that priority will be given to qualitatively improve the provision of health service. Noting that the health administration introduced over the past years in the five sub-zones, the modern medical equipment introduced in the hospitals as well as the community based environmental sanitation activities and the training provided to barefoot doctors has significantly contributed in alleviating the existed challenges, Dr. Ahayelom said that as a result of that no contagious diseases have been detected. Indicating that with the growing demand of health services, utmost priority is being given to upgrade the professional skills of health practitioners and supply of medical equipment, Ms. Amina Nur-Husein, Minister of Health, called for the preservation of the already registered achievements and for integrated effort for better outcome. Mr. Abraha Garza, Governor of the Gash Barka region, on his part expressed readiness of the regional administration in the effort to provide quality health service to the public.

The discussion forum was attended by officials, intellectuals, journalists and interested Sudanese as well as members of the Eritrean community. Indicating that various programs are being worked out aimed at strengthening the relationship and cooperation between the two peoples, the Charge d’Affairs at the Eritrean Embassy in Sudan, Mr. Ibrahim Idris said that the discussion forum will have significant contribution to that effect. Pointing out on the historical relations between the peoples of Eritrea and Sudan, Dr. S. Kedir and Prof. Buhari A. Ali called for reinforced effort for the highest level of friendship and cooperation. Dr. Ibrahim Alamin and Eng. Mohamed Faruq on their part commending for the organizers for organizing the discussion forum gave extensive briefings on the support the Sudanese people extended to the Eritrean people during the armed struggle for independence as well as the stance and solidarity of the people and Government of Eritrea to the free choice of the Sudanese people.

A meeting on the significance of increased awareness of the public on environmental sanitation was conducted in Hagaz sub-zone on 27 January. Hagaz, 29 January 2020- A meeting on the significance of increased awareness of the public on environmental sanitation was conducted in Hagaz sub-zone on 27 January. At the meeting extensive discussion was made on the importance of introducing latrines in ensuring the health of the society as well as on malaria and means of controlling it. Indicating on the importance of introducing community based environmental sanitation program in ensuring the health of the society, Mr. Musie Gebrehiwet, head of Environmental Sanitation in the sub-zone, said that 52 out of the 61 villages in the sub-zone have introduced latrines. Pointing out that clean water and food, ensuring environmental sanitation as well as personal cleanliness could prevent 80% of communicable diseases, Mr. Musie called on area administrators and concerned bodies to reinforce participation in awareness raising programs being conducted. Noting on the significance of village regroupings in ensuring environmental sanitation, Mr. Teklehaimanot Musael, managing director in the sub-zone, called for strengthening participation in the implementation of the charted out development drives. The meeting was attended by administrators of the 15 administrative areas in the sub-zone, religious leaders, representatives of Assembly and national associations and others.

The Ministry of Heath urges citizens to enhance awareness on the Novel Coronavirus that was detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan in 2019 and that is spreading into many countries. Asmara, 29 January 2020- The Ministry of Heath urges citizens to enhance awareness on the Novel Coronavirus that was detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan in 2019 and that is spreading into many countries. Speaking to Erina, Dr. Andebrhan Tesfatsion said that the Coronavirus causes severe acute respiratory infection and there is no specific cure or vaccine. Dr. Andebrhan indicated that the common symptoms of the disease are headache, malaise, runny nose, cough or sore throat and muscle pain among others. Pointing out that the virus could be transmitted from person to person through coughing and human contact, Dr. Andebrahan advises people to frequently clean hands by alcohol or soap and water, cover mouth and nose while sneezing as well as other means that could prevent the virus from infecting. According to report, Dr. Andebrhan said that the virus within two weeks has been detected in the US, Australia, France, Canada, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam and Germany. Dr. Andebrahan went on to say that according to report from the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia, five Ethiopians suspected of being infected by Coronavirus have been placed in isolation. Dr. Andebrhan also indicated that the Ministry of Health in cooperation with partners is conducting rigorous screening on passengers at the Asmara International Airport, has established quarantine center at Villaggio Community Hospital and is advising nationals that are in China for various reasons to contact the Eritrean Embassy in that country.

The Heads of State and Government of Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia met in Asmara, on 27 January, 2020. The Heads of State and Government of Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia met in Asmara, on 27 January, 2020. The three leaders held candid and extensive discussions on the situations in their respective countries, their tripartite cooperation and developments in the Horn of Africa region. The three leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the Tripartite Agreement they signed in September 2018 and reviewed the outcomes of their considerable joint efforts towards its implementation. The three leaders adopted a Joint Plan of Action for 2020 and beyond focusing on the two main and intertwined objectives of consolidating peace, stability and security as well as promoting economic and social development. They also agreed to bolster their joint efforts to foster effective regional cooperation. On the security front, the three leaders formulated a comprehensive plan to combat and neutralize the common threats they face, including terrorism, arms and human trafficking and drugs smuggling. Regarding economic and social development, they agreed to prioritize the mobilization of their bountiful human and natural resources; build, modernize and interface their infrastructure and develop their productive and service sectors. They also expressed their appreciation for, and their readiness to cooperate with, their friends and partners, on the basis of mutual respect and mutual benefit. Asmara, 24 January 2020 – The Assembly of Gash Barka region conducted its 18th regular meeting on 23 January, in Barentu under the theme «Integrated Soil and Water Conservation Effort for Enhanced Productivity». Underlining the significant contribution of soil and water conservation activity in redressing the environment and enhancing agricultural production, Mr. Osman Mohammed Ali, Chairman of the Assembly, said that soil and water conservation activity will be given priority task of the administration of the Gash Barka region for 2020, and called on members of the Assembly to play active role in organizing and mobilizing communities to that end. Indicating that most of the charted out development of 2019 are implemented, Mr. Osman stated that construction of maternity waiting rooms in health institutions, ensuring proper use of latrines in villages, controlling deforestation activities, increasing students’ school enrolment, as well as ensuring potable water supply are among activities that need increased effort. Reminding members of the Assembly to play leading role in the successful implementation of the charted out development programs as well as in organizing community led development initiatives, Mr. Abraha Garza, Governor of Gash Barka region, on his part, expressed the regional administration’s readiness to cooperate with the regional Assembly in all its endeavors. According to Ms. Zeineb Omar, Chairperson of the Holidays Coordinating Committee in the Northern Red Sea region, preparation to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the operation has been finalized. Ms. Zeineb said that the event will feature cultural programs and sports competitions as well as community gathering depicting the significance of Operation Fenkil in the history of the liberation struggle. Gen. Tekle Libsu, Governor of the Northern Red Sea region, called on farmers in the administrative areas of Zula, Afta and Foro to carry out regular follow up on their crops that are in good condition and ready for harvest. Brig. Gen. Tekle made the call during an inspection tour he conducted to the administrative areas on 18 January. The Governor also called for reinforced role of area administrators and agricultural experts to assist the farmers so that they collect their harvest on time. Brig. Gen. Tekle Libsu went on to say that if modern agriculture is introduced in Foro sub zone, the agricultural output will not only increase the region’s produce but will also significantly contribute in the increase of the nation’s GDP.Commending the farmers for cultivating on their own capacity, the Governor expressed the region’s readiness to extend support in their endeavors. Mr. Tesfay Tewelde, head of the office of Agriculture in Foro sub zone on his part, indicated that crops cultivated on 300 hectares of farm land in Zula, Afta and Foro administrative areas are in good condition. Stating that the cultivated crops are mostly maize and sorghum, Mr. Tesfay said that bountiful harvest is expected as the farmers in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture are exerting proper follow up activities.

The Eritrean Medical Association held its 25th congress today, 18 January, at Asmara Palace Hotel.   Asmara, 18 January 2020- The Eritrean Medical Association held its 25th congress today, 18 January, at Asmara Palace Hotel. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prof. Negasi Leake, Chairman of the association, gave briefing on the activity implemented by the Eritrean Medical Association (ERIMA) in the past 25 years and said that the mission of the association is to organize training programs focusing on medical profession and medical technology and called on members of the association to constantly upgrade their professional capacity. The Secretary of the Association, Dr. Mahmud Mohammed said that the objective of the association is to transfer educational information and to create a forum for sharing experiences among the medical professionals. At the meeting research papers were presented pertaining to medical issues and the participants conducted extensive discussion. The Eritrean Medical Association that was established in 1994 has over 180 members.

Statement by Ms. Sophia Tesfamariam, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Eritrea to the United Nations

Statement by Ms. Sophia Tesfamariam, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Eritrea to the United Nations, during the Security Council Debate on: «Maintenance of international peace and security: Upholding the UN Charter» 13th January 2020, New York Mr. President, My delegation wishes to congratulate Vietnam for assuming the presidency of the Council for the month of January and for convening this timely debate on «Maintenance of international peace and security: upholding the UN Chaffer». I would like to take this opportunity to welcome I-I.E. Mr. Pham Binh Minh, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam and thank Secretary-General António Guterres and Mrs. Robinson for their statements. The United Nations came about primarily to maintain and check international peace and security after the devastation, destruction and dire humanitarian conditions caused by World War Il. Established in 1945, its creation was a deliberate attempt «to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war». The UN Charter was the means to do that. The Charter gave the Security Council the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security and provided the procedures to handle international disputes and prevent their escalation. The Charter and organizations of the United Nations are necessary for the arbitration of relations between states, the protection of common principles and the promotion of common values and material well-being. The Charter has been described as the world's central operating system—«the motherboard of global governance», which bore ideas such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and today, the Sustainable Development Goals, which have been embraced globally. Mr. President, At present time, generations around the world are living in conditions of poverty and peacelessness, where human development, dignity and security remain elusive. Despite the fact that Article 2 of the UN Chaffer's call on countries to, «refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state», today, there are wars waged in total disregard for the Chaffer of the United Nations and its principles, and the sovereign rights of States enshrined in the Charter are willfully ignored. Our world has witnessed and continues to witness massive atrocities, mass destruction and slaughter. We have failed to «save succeeding generations from the scourge of war» and the Council's efficacy is being questioned by suffering people  everywhere. The Security Council has been ineffective and inconsistent in securing peace in our world. In some instances, its actions have contributed to untenable situations, prolonging the suffering of millions in the process. Many populations around the world are grappling with intractable conflicts beyond their capacities, and the Security Council remains impotent, constrained by geopolitical considerations, double standards, and conflicting interests. And when it did act, the Council's actions tend to revolve around managing crises, rather than ending them. Mr. President, The Security Council's credibility, integrity and efficacy have been undermined and there are many contributing factors. For brevity's sake, Eritrea wishes to highlight three of them: l. Strict observance of the principles of the UN Charter. Eritrea reiterates the importance and validity of collective security by fully adhering to the UN Charter in order to deter war and advance peace. One of the pillars of the UN Charter is for nations to live by their commitments. Treaty commitments aye sacrosanct. States should not be allowed to cherry-pick and the Security Council should also be duty bound to enforce peace accords. 2.    Invocation of Chapter VII. Chapter VLI should be applied only when the situation warrants it. However, at times, the Security Council has acted ultra vires, leading to the imposition of unjust and illegal sanctions on States. The Council has broadly construed its powers under Chapter VIl and expanded its jurisdiction from traditional matters of security to new spheres previously under the purview of other organs and non-U.N. entities. The Council has also over time «assumed quasi-legislative and quasi-judicial functions, straining conceptions of propriety and institutional competence». «Discordant Council practice has resulted in a blurring of the lines between the ordinary powers and functions allotted to the Council and those extraordinary powers reserved for situations constituting, at a minimum, threats to     international peace and security». Hence the need for transparent rules and procedures in invoking both Chapters VI & VIL 3.    Council Agenda item. There is a tendency towards entrenchment of situations in which Chapter VIl has been invoked. Though the Council has explicitly «concluded its consideration» of an item and removed it from the list of matters of which the Council is seized in, it has done so less frequently and in some instances, matters have remained on the Council's agenda for extended periods. This leads to lack of clarity in assessing both the purpose and endpoint of Council responses to threats to the peace, and allows for the routinization of exception. Clarity and consistency are similarly essential in resolutions pertaining to mandate evolution and termination. Otherwise, overriding political considerations could lead to selective and inappropriate application of the rules. Adherence to its mandate under the UN Charter will enhance the Council's credibility, efficacy, integrity and reputation, as well as confidence of member states in its decisions. Mr. President, In 2020, in addition to the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations, the global community will mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995). As we enter the «Decade of Action» in pursuit of the Global Goals, and Africa's Agenda 2063 and «Silencing the guns by 2020», it will require a renewed and concerted effort by all of us, towards the full achievement of peace, security and development. The Council can count on Eritrea's continued support. I thank you.

Call for reinforced participation in development programs

Assab, 15 January 2019- Mr. Tesfai Zere, administrator of Assab sub-zone called on the residents to reinforce participation in the implementation of the mapped out development programs of 2020. Indicating on the significance of reviewing the strengths and challenges of the activities implemented in 2019, Mr. Tesfai called for due attention for developing the teaching-learning process, ensuring health of the society as well as rehabilitation of disadvantaged citizens and care takers of the disabled. As regards infrastructural development, Mr. Tesfai said that replacing electricity poles and renovation of roads of the port city of Assab as well as repairing the Assab-Harsile water pipes are among the priority tasks for 2020. Indicating that commendable sports activities are being conducted in the sub-zone, Mr. Tesfai went on to say that as a result of the formation of more sports clubs the sub-zone has contributed players to the national team under 15 years of age.

Art exhibition organized by the Promotion and Information Unit of the Eritrean Defense Forces in connection with the New Year 2020 was opened yesterday 13 January at The Gallery, Asmara, by General Filipos Woldeyohannes, Chief of Staff of the Eritrean Armed Force. Asmara, 14 January 2020 –Art exhibition organized by the Promotion and Information Unit of the Eritrean Defense Forces in connection with the New Year 2020 was opened yesterday 13 January at The Gallery, Asmara, by General Filipos Woldeyohannes, Chief of Staff of the Eritrean Armed Force. The opening ceremony of the art exhibition was attended by Major General Romodan Osman Awlyay, Governor of the Central region, Ambassador Zemede Tekle, Commissioner of Culture and Sports, as well as other high ranking army officers. The exhibition includes paintings and sculpture depicting the culture and lifestyle of the Eritrean people, the Eritrean armed struggle for independence and safeguarding national sovereignty as well as development programs. Speaking at the event, Ms. Sofia Saleh, head of arts at the Promotion and Information Unit indicated that paintings and sculpture that are prepared by members of the Defense Forces in the last 20 years have been represented in the exhibition. The art exhibition will remain open to the public until 17 January.
