New dams under construction in Halhal

Two dams worth of six million Nakfa are under construction in the administrative areas of Mai-Awalid and Ad-Hizbai, Halhal sub-zone. Keren, 08 October 2019- Two dams worth of six million Nakfa are under construction in the administrative areas of Mai-Awalid and Ad-Hizbai, Halhal sub-zone. Upon completion the dam in Mai-Awaled is expected to alleviate potable water problem to over 100 residents in addition to contributing in the agricultural development by enriching under ground water in the area. According to Eng. Ermias Asgedom, coordinator of the project, the dam will hold 145 thousand meter cube of water and will have significant contribution in the cultivation of 14 hectares of land. He also said that the construction of the dam will be finalized in November. Likewise, the dam in Ad-Hizbai will also have similar contribution with that of Mai-Awalid. The construction of the dam is expected to be finalized at the end of this month.

The National Association of the Eritrean War Disabled Veterans branch in the Central region on 5 October conducted a meeting on the progress of the association and future prospects, here in the capital. Asmara, 07 October 2019 –The National Association of the Eritrean War Disabled Veterans branch in the Central region on 5 October conducted a meeting on the progress of the association and future prospects, here in the capital. At the meeting in which members of the association attended, activity report of the past 13 years was presented and that discussion was conducted on the draft resolution of the coming 4th Congress of the association. At the activity report, it was indicated that in spite of the challenges encountered, important activities were conducted in the past 13 years owing to the support extended by the Government and partners. Speaking to Erina, Mr. Tesfamicael Haile, head of the association branch in the Central region stating that the objective of the association is to create conducive environment where the war disabled citizens can become economically self-supporting and productive members of the society, commended nationals inside the country and abroad for their contribution. Mr. Berhane Zerie, member of the coordinating committee for the 4th Congress of the association, stated that a draft recommendation has been already prepared for amending the constitution and that will be presented at the 4th Congress for ratification. Finally, participants elected 86 members to participate at the 4th Congress of the National Association of the War Disabled Veterans to be conducted on 25 and 26 October.

Solar powered potable water project worth over 3 million Nakfa was inaugurated yesterday, 6 October in Weki-Duba, Central region. Asmara, 07 October 2019 – Solar powered potable water project worth over 3 million Nakfa was inaugurated yesterday, 6 October in Weki-Duba, Central region. The project includes a solar power able to drill 30 barrels of water per hour, a reservoir, as well as pipelines and 4 water distribution stations. At the inauguration ceremony, it was indicated that there has been acute water crisis in Weki-Duba and that with putting in place the new solar powered water project, the problem has been alleviated. Speaking at the event, Mr. Tesfu Fesshatsion, administrator of Berik sub zone noting the significance of clean water in the health and socio economic lives of nationals called on the public to properly use the project and follow-up of its sustainability. Commending residents of Weki-Duba form their contribution, Mr. Zeriet Teweldeberhan, managing director in the Central region on his part called on residents to strengthen participation in the effort to redress the environment with a view to enrich the water source of the project. The beneficiaries on their part commending the Government and partners for realizing the project expressed readiness to properly use the water project put in place in their area.Weki-Duba is home to 3 thousand residents.

The Ministry of Health in cooperation with the Sudanese Ophthalmologists team ‘Albeser” has conducted commendable eye surgery for 442 patients in Adi-Keih Hospital. Mendefera, 07 October 2019 – The Ministry of Health in cooperation with the Sudanese Ophthalmologists team ‘Albeser” has conducted commendable eye surgery for 442 patients in Adi-Keih Hospital. According to Dr. Bahbelom Micael, head of Adi-Keih Hospital, during the eye surgery campaign conducted from 24 September to 1 October, around 2 thousand nationals were provided with medical care and that apart from those that surgery was conducted upon, 500 others with sight disabilities were provided with eye glasses. Dr. Bahbelom further indicated that three of the beneficiaries were children born with cataract. Prof. Mohammed-Nur Hassan, coordinator of the Ophthalmologists team, said that the strong organization in Eritrea has significantly contributed in the success of the program. Also observing at the eye surgery program in Adi-Keih Hospital, Minister of Health Ms. Amna Nurhussien on her part stating that strong effort is being exerted in the blindness prevention program throughout the country stated that the eye surgery campaign conducted in Adi-Keih Hospital is part of the endeavor being conducted in the Northern Red Sea and Anseba regions. 66 professionals including 25 members of the Sudanese Ophthalmologists team ‘Albeser” participated at the eye treatment and surgery campaign.

The Ministry of Health branch in Gash Barka region organized a workshop on 2 and 3 October in Barentu aimed at integrating effort to ensure mother and child health. Barentu, 05 October 2019- The Ministry of Health branch in Gash Barka region organized a workshop on 2 and 3 October in Barentu aimed at integrating effort to ensure mother and child health. Indicating that the Ministry of Health has been exerting commendable effort in cooperation with stakeholders to ensure the health of society in general and that of mother and child in particular, Dr. Haielom Kidane, head of the branch office, said that the achievement so far registered attests to the strong effort conducted. At the workshop, Mr. Berhane Abraha gave briefing on the effort conducted and the progress registered in ensuring mother and child health. In is report, Mr. Berhane indicating that location of the health facilities as well as the low awareness of the public on health issues and harmful practices have been the main challenges, and expressed expectation that the workshop will contribute in addressing the challenges. Research papers were presented by experts focusing situation on mother and child health at national and global level. Pointing out on the timely of the workshop, Dr. Berhana Haile, Director of Community and Family Health at the Ministry of Health, expressed readiness of the ministry play due part in the effort being conducted to ensure mother and child health in the region. Brig. Gen. Tekle Kiflai, Commander of the Western Command, and the Governor of the Gash Barka region, Mr. Abraha Garza on their part indicating the importance of raising the awareness of the public and members of the Defense Forces on health issues and that the meningitis vaccination set to be conducted in October and November will have significant contribution to that effect.

At the ceremony in which heads of the Ministry of Education and teachers representatives took part, Mr. Simon Mehari, chairman of the teachers association, said that the World Teachers Day that is being observed for the 26th time at international level and for the 23rd time at national level reminds for exerting strong effort for nurturing competent generation that could assume responsibility of nation building. Indicating that the day is in which teachers renew their pledge to look to the future, Mr. Simon said that young teachers are the future of profession and called for creating conducive working atmosphere. Mr. Petros Hailemariam, D. G. of Research and Human Resources Development, representing the Minister of Education called on the teachers association to organize sustainable training programs with a view to upgrade the profession of young teachers. Dr. Tedros Seyum and Dr. Saleh Mahumd also presented research papers. Ambassador Zigang further briefed invited guests with statistics that over the past 40 years of reform and opening-up, China has lifted more than 700 million people out of poverty, became largest industrial nation in the world, and has significantly improved the standard of living of its citizens. At the celebration event, a video presentation was staged on the epochs China passed through to reach the level that it has currently reached. According to report, economic forum was organized on 27 September in Pfullingen, Germany, to discuss the investment and trade opportunities in Eritrea and Ethiopia. At the forum in which representatives of over 40 German organizations took part. Mr. Teklu Lebasi, head of Public, Diplomatic and Media at the Eritrean Embassy in Germany, said that owing to the relentless effort of the people and Government of Eritrea the countries of Horn of Africa and the Red Sea and Nile Basins have created conducive ground for cooperation and that Eritrea is working by designing programs targeting national and regional developments. Mr. Yohannes Eyasu, economic and investment adviser on his part gave extensive briefing on the important sectors for investment in Eritrea and conducted discussion with various organizations with a view to increase the understanding of the business communities about Eritrea. Likewise, one day workshop was conducted on 28 September in Birmingham for representatives of YPFDJ and national organizations from all cities in the United Kingdom aimed at strengthening organizational capacity. Indicating that the Eritrean people and its leadership in the past 20 years have emerged victorious foiling the external conspiracies aimed at derailing its economic progress, Mr. Estifanos Habtemariam, Eritrean Ambassador to the UK and Northern Ireland, expressed the significance of strengthening organizational capacity in this new era unfolding in the region. The participants elected five members executive committee at UK level and expressed readiness to strengthen participation in the implementation of charted out programs. In the same vein, Eritrean community members in Munchen and Cologne contributed 4,600 Euros in support of families of martyrs.

Asmara, 03 October 2019- Eritrea participated at the Global Aviation Security Symposium held between 18 to 29 September as well as at the 40th session of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) General Assembly being held from 24 September to 4 October. The Global Aviation Security Symposium was attended by 42 member states and 7 aviation manufacturers and the International Aviation Organization Assembly is being attended by 193 member states, aviation manufacturers and service providers. Eritrea was represented by Mr. Paulos Kahsai, D. G. of Civil Aviation Authority, and Mr. Samuel Girmai, member of the Consulate General of Eritrea to Canada. At the symposium research papers were presented focusing on aviation security, safety, air transport, air navigation, administrative, general rules and regulations and aviation manufacturing industries displayed their products. In a statement he delivered at the occasion, Mr. Paulos said that Eritrea has successfully managed to build aviation safety and security, public awareness and sense of ownership with a view to ensure aviation security. Mr. Paulos went on to say that Eritrea has made a remarkable success in aviation security by scoring 75.56%, well above the global average which is 72% and that Eritrea is diligently working to maintain and sustain conformity with ICAO standards and recommended practices. Eritrea has become member of the International Civil Aviation Organization in 1993.

The Minister of Justice Ms. Fauzia Hashem called for strengthened community participation in strengthening and nurturing societal values.   Mendefera, 02 October 2019 –The Minister of Justice Ms. Fauzia Hashem called for strengthened community participation in strengthening and nurturing societal values. The call was made at a meeting she conducted in Mendefera with community magistrates and committees of reconciliation of the Southern region. At the meeting conducted on 1 October, Minister Fauzia said that establishing community based institutions is a process that helps preserve the integrity of society in general and unity of families in particular by avoiding individualism and developing consciousness and noble cultural values. Noting that reconciliation is not only a conflict resolution strategy but also part of the values of the family and community, Minister Fauzia stated it role in resolving conflicts and underlined the need to exert integrated effort to preserve and transfer the social values to posterity. She further indicated that reconciliation has an esteemed social value both in saving generations from committing unwanted crimes and resolving conflicts. Documents of the Southern region indicate that there are 105 community courts and committees of reconciliation in each sub zone elected by the society.

Effort is underway to establish three tourism parks in the Southern region, with the objective of developing tourism sector in the region. Mendefera, 01 October 2019 –Effort is underway to establish three tourism parks in the Southern region, with the objective of developing tourism sector in the region. According to report, over 100 members of the tourism service rendering institutions conducted forestation activity on 25 September at the tourism park that is being developed in Dubarwa in connection with the World Tourism Day. The D.G. of Tourism in the Southern region, Ms. Asmeret Abraha indicated that the tourism parks that are being developed in the region will have fences, and that a number of big indigenous trees and flowers will be planted and will be protected and supervised by tourism service rendering institutions. Stating that the project has already been initiated in Dubarwa, Dekemhare and Adi-Quala, Ms. Asmeret said that similar initiative to develop tourism parks will be taken in the other sub zones of the region as well. Likewise, at a ceremony conducted in Assab in connection with the observance of World Tourism Day, Mr. Isa Ahmed, D.G. of Tourism in the Southern Red Sea region said that the region is endowed with several tourism attraction sites and called for strong contribution in the effort being exerted to develop the tourism sector. Massawa, 27 September 2019- The Chairman of the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students, Mr. Saleh Ahmedin conducted seminar on 26 September to youth workers in the port city of Massawa focusing on the implementation of charted out development programs. At the seminar Mr. Saleh gave extensive briefing on the profound national identity nurtured in the past 20 years compared to the neighboring countries as well as the responsibility of the youth in the new era of friendship and cooperation in the region. Indicating that one could not look to the future by forgetting the past, Mr. Saleh said that the strong Eritrean national identity was the result of the values nurtured in the trying times. Mr. Saleh went on to say that commendable activity had been conducted to transfer the noble values fostered during the armed struggle for independence to the young generation. Pointing out that the unity and nationalism promoted and the heavy sacrifice paid to bring independence and safeguarding the national sovereignty was the basis for existence as a country, Mr. Saleh called on the youth to live up to expectations and strengthen contribution. At the seminar conducted on 21 and 22 September, Dr. Tsegai said that societal values, heritage, beliefs, traditions, folklores, festivities, laws, history and arts are reflections of the identity of a given society. Indicating that Eritrea possesses ancient and historical heritage including remains of homo sapience aged 125 thousand years, stone paintings and calligraphies in the areas of Adi-Keih, Tsorena, Mai-Aini, Gala-Nefhi, Nakfa, Karora, Asmat, Maebele and in other areas aged from 2 to 5 thousand years, Dr. Tsegai called for strengthening participation with a view to properly study and document the heritage. Mendefera, 20 September 2019- At an assessment meeting conducted in Medefera on 18 and 19 September it was reported that praiseworthy activities have been conducted in eradicating harmful practices and community based environmental sanitation activities in which over 160 thousand people participated. The meeting was attended by over 100 members of villages committees from the 12 sub-zones of the Southern region, administrators of the sub-zones and heads of the regional administration. Speaking at the event, Mr. Kaleab Tesfaselasie, D. G. of Social Service in the region, said that the Committee for Ensuring the Rights of Children has conducted successful awareness raising program for over 83 thousand people and community based environmental sanitation for over 80 thousand people. Dr. Amanuel Mehreteab, head of the Ministry of Health branch in the region, also said that the effort to eradicate harmful practices and introduction of community based environmental sanitation activities have significantly contributed in ensuring the health of the society and in the reduction of communicable diseases in the region.

Asmara, 20 September 2019- The Forestry and Wild Life Authority reported that the number of elephants population in the country that was 15 according to the study conducted in 1996 has currently reached to 250. Indicating that 44 thousand hectares of land has been reserved for elephants in the Laelai Gash sub-zone, Mr. Fetsum Hagos, head of Wildlife Development and Conservation, said that there is a plan to construct micro-dams in the sub-zones of Laelai Gash and Gogni with a view to alleviate the problem that may occur related to water supply. Mr. Fitsum also called on all concerned institutions and individuals to strengthen participation in controlling illegal killing of elephants and cross border smuggling of parts and ensure their safety and development. Mr. Fustum went on to say that in August of this year Eritrea has become member of the Elephants Safety Organization of Africa and that the official signing of membership will be held in the near future. The Elephants Safety Organization of Africa was established in 2014 by Ethiopia, Botswana, Chad and Gabon comprises 37 African countries.

Indicating that the objective of conducting assessment meeting is to identify strengths and challenges encountered and give due attention to find solution for the bottlenecks, Mr. Petros Hailemariam representing the Minister of Education called on the participants to forward constructive ideas. At the meeting the Ministry of Education branches of the six regions and Sawa Warsai Yikealo School and the Vocational Training Center presented reports focusing on the timely beginning of the school year, distribution of school materials, result of students in the school leaving and eight grade national exams, females school enrolment, the situation of boarding schools, students summer work program, schools’ renovation, progress of adult education as well as cultural and sports activities. According to the reports presented it was noted that, late beginning of school year was observed due to various problems, a number of schools need renovation and lack of villages regrouping was among the bottlenecks encountered in the teaching-learning process. The participants on their part called for ensuring the supply of school materials and for proper study on the condition of boarding schools. With regards the Warsai Yikealo School and Vocational Training Center in Sawa it was reported that the timely distribution of school materials has significantly contributed in the timely beginning of the school year. Call was also made for timely assignment of supervisors and the completion of the construction of the new buildings.

The participants discussed on the objectives of the association, contribution of anesthetists in the health sector and on the significance of establishing the Association. The 14th Conference of UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), which was officially kicked off on 2 September in New Delhi, India concluded today, 13th September. In this international event, 11 high-level, 30 committees and over 170 stakeholder meetings and 44 exhibitions were conducted. According to recent reports, more than 9000 participants representing 197 country parties, government and non-governmental institutions, scientific institutes as well as other concerned individuals and activists attended the conference. The Eritrean delegation headed by Mr. Huruy Asghedom, D.G. of Agricultural Extension Department, that attended at the conference met and held talks with the Executive Secretary of UNCCD, Mr. Ibrahim Thiaw on 12th September focusing on Eritrea’s endeavors towards combating land degradation as well as reinforcing collaboration with relevant development partners. Introduction of Solar Powered Stove, Watershed management and the Minimum Integrated Household Agricultural Package (MIHAP) were among the main discussion areas with the executive secretary. In addition, as per an official request by the UNCCD office, the delegation handed over a painting entitled: ‘Eritrea’s balanced vision' to the Executive Secretary to be put in the UNCCD headquarters based in Bonn, Germany, as part of the office’s country parties heritage. During the two weeks 14th Conference of Parties of the UNCCD, country parties discussed the current desertification, land degradation and drought situation and adopted possible scientific solutions. Moreover, various good practices and technologies that would enable the world to combat desertification were exhibited. According to the report, the country parties yesterday, 13 September, adopted ‘New Delhi Declaration to combat land degradation. It was highlighted by the UNCCD executive secretary that land restoration is one of the cheapest solutions for climate change, biodiversity loss and multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Moreover, addressing drought and its risks as well as promoting people centered land policies were among the focus areas of the declaration. It is to be recalled that Eritrea’s Art and Audio-visual exhibition got utmost appreciation by high ranking officials and visitors for it combined art and applied sciences.

Mendefera, 10 September 2019- The pilot project that was initiated in 2017 by the Crops and Livestock Corporation in Dubarwa sub-zone is registering commendable result. The report was made by Maj. Kibreab Abraham, Manager of the corporation. Maj. Kibreab said that Dubarwa area possesses conducive climate, abundant water supply and rich soil suitable for developing dairy farms. According to Maj. Kibreab the objective of the project was to develop milk and milk products as well as meat and supply the market with fair and reasonable price. It is also part of the effort to ensure food security and develop agronomy and agro-industry in the country, Maj. Kibreab added. Maj. Kibreab went on to say that the dairy farm project that started with 660 milk cows has currently reached to 2 thousand. Indicating that over 500 hectare of land is allocated for cultivation of green animal fodder, Maj. Kibreab said that the project has created job opportunity to 180 people with first degree, diploma and certificate as well as for over 600 residents of the area. The residents of Dubarwa town on their part understanding the advantage of the project in improving their livelihoods expressed readiness to contribute their part in the development and sustainability of the project.

President Isaias had also met with Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, Sheikh Mensour bin Zaid al Nayhan. President Isaias yesterday, 8 September met and discussed with Minister of Education, Dr. Hussein Alhamadi focusing on the developing relation between the two countries in education sector. The President is scheduled to meet with Mr. Khaldun Almubarek, Chairman of Mubadelah (Emirates Investments) later today.
