Eritrean Libraries and Information Association organized one day workshop on 28 February aimed at transforming information in developing knowledge.   Asmara, 01 March 2019 - Eritrean Libraries and Information Association organized one day workshop on 28 February aimed at transforming information in developing knowledge. At the workshop in which representatives of line ministries, national organizations and others took part, Mr. Kiflom Micael, president of the association, stated that in an effort toimprove their living standard, human beings in the past hundreds years had to go through trial and errors and innovations to reach the modern era of computers and internet. At the work shop, several research papers on various topics were presented including knowledge and productivity, knowledge and efficiency, information and knowledge in relation to the role of information technology, management of knowledge among others. Participants discussed on the papers presented and adopted recommendations. Mr. Petros Hailemariam, D.G. of Research and Human Resources, pointing the significance of the workshop in nurturing human resources equipped with the necessary knowledge and skill, commended the association for organizing the workshop.

Eritrean nationals residing in Germany and Oakland, USA, conducted various public diplomatic activities depicting their attachment with their homeland. Asmara, 28 February 2019 - Eritrean nationals residing in Germany and Oakland, USA, conducted various public diplomatic activities depicting their attachment with their homeland. According to reports, the nationals from various cities of Germany organized a seminar on 23 February in the city of Giessen under the theme «Constructive Engagement between the Peoples of Our Region». At the seminar briefings on the objective situation in the homeland were presented accompanied with video show and photo exhibition depicting the resilience and steadfastness the Eritrean people demonstrated in the last 20 years. The event was also highlighted with various cultural and artistic performances. Speaking at the event, Mr. Yohannes Weldu, Charge d'Affairs at the Eritrean Embassy in Germany, said that the strong resilience and steadfastness of the Eritrean propels has been vital in the unfolding peace and cooperation between Eritrea and Ethiopia  and called for strengthening participation in the successful implementation of national development program. In related news, Eritrean nationals residing in Oakland, USA, conducted a seminar on 24 February on the objective situation in the homeland as well as on the timely regional and international developments.

Asmara, 28 February 2019- The Ministry of Health in cooperation with various government institutions and stakeholders organized a consensus building workshop on 27 February here in Asmara to discuss on the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance. Speaking at the event, Minister Arefaine Berhe, Minister of Agriculture, said that Antimicrobials play critical role in the treatment of animal and plant diseases and in ensuring food security. Minister Arefaine went on to say that the misuse of the drugs and pesticides develops resistance on animals and plants and that has attracted the attention of professionals to look into better options, which is Integrated Pest Management to crop protection than pesticides use in order to keep pests and diseases below economically harmful levels. Indicating that the workshop is part of the Global Initiative to reduce Antimicrobial Resistance, Mr. Berhane Gebretensae, D. G. of Health Services at the Ministry of Health, said that the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance was the outcome of the hard collaboration work of various ministries and partners mainly, the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, Land, Water and Environment, Marine Resources and the World Health Organization. Pointing out on the significance of the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance in ensuring the health of human and  animals as well as in environmental conservation, Mr. Tesfai Gebreselasie, Minister of Water, Land and Environment, called for integrated effort in realizing the national action plan.

Asmara, 28 February 2019- Mr. Osman Saleh, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met and held talks, today, 28 February with Russian Federation’s Sverdlovsk region delegation led by Mr. Sergey Bidonko, Deputy Governor. The two sides discussed on the investment opportunity and cooperation prospects in manufacturing, energy, water infrastructure, health, pharmaceuticals as well as culture and sports. The meeting was attended by Presidential Advisor, Mr. Yemane Gebreab and the Russian Federation Ambassador to Eritrea, Mr. Azim Yarakhmedov. Mr. Sergey Bidonko is visiting Eritrea for the second time and that attests to the growing relations between Russia and Eritrea and the region. The Russian delegation also held similar meetings with the Ministers of Health, Tourism as well as the Director General of Mines. During its stay in Eritrea, the Russian delegation will visit development and tourism sites in Keren, Massawa and Segeneity. A Russian youth football team, which accompanied the delegation, will play a friendly match with its Eritrean counterpart in Asmara today.

Asmara, 26 February 2019 –Eritrean community in Israel contributed over 221 thousand Dollars to augment martyrs’ trust fund as well as in support of the National Association of Eritrean War Disabled Veterans (NAEWDV). According to report from the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, the 201 thousand Dollars was contributed in support the families of martyrs, and the remaining USD 19,650 in support of the National Association Eritrean War Disabled Veterans. Expressing satisfaction for supporting families of martyrs and war disabled veterans, the nationals expressed readiness to strengthen their organizational capacity and sustainably continue their support. Speaking at the event, the Charge d’Affairs at the Eritrean Embassy in Israel, Mr. Solomon Kinfe commended the nationals for their contribution in support of martyrs families and the war disabled veterans and called on for strengthening organizational capacity and enhanced contribution.

Owing to the potable water system implemented, 79% of the residents of the Southern region have access to clean water, Mr. Kibrom Misgna, head of water branch at the region stated. Mendefera, 26 February 2019 –Owing to the potable water system implemented, 79% of the residents of the Southern region have access to clean water, Mr. Kibrom Misgna, head of water branch at the region stated. Stating that in the last several years potable water projects have been put in place in villages, semi-urban centers, and towns, Mr. Kibrom said that 25% of the projects are manual pumped, and 54% are solar and electric powered. Indicating that last year alone 11 potable water projects worth of 16.6 million Nakfa were implemented in 16 villages and two towns, Mr. Kibrom pointed out that over 40 thousand residents have become beneficiaries. Stating that repair services was conducted on several damaged water projects, Mr. Kibrom indicated that in 2018 alone, over 28 water distribution centers and 250 manual pumps were repaired and ready for service.

The Massawa Vocational Training Center provided a four month vocational training to 158 youth including 75 females. Massawa, 25 February 2019 – The Massawa Vocational Training Center provided a four month vocational training to 158 youth including 75 females. The training provided to youth aged 25-35 from Emberemi, Hirgigo and three administrative areas of the port city of Massawa included basic construction skills, electronics, electricity, plumbing as well as making fishing and marine technology. Speaking at the graduation ceremony conducted on 21 February, the head of the training center Mr. Suleman Jaber stated that the center has trained over 300 youth in the last two years of its establishment. Pointing that the trainees will be provided with work equipments, Head of Education in the Northern Red Sea region, Mr. Reshid Mehammed-Osman on his part stated that effort will be exerted to organize the youth trained with fishing technology under the umbrella of the Ministry of Marine Resources. Mr. Gebrezghi Dimam, Director General of Adult Education and Media in the region on his part indicated that as part of providing regular educational service the Ministry of Education in cooperation with stakeholders is exerting effort to provide youth with vocational trainings. Trainees on their part thanking for the training opportunities created for them expressed conviction to become self supportive and role models in their areas. Keren, 24 February 2019 - Governor of Anseba region, Mr. Ali Mahmud made a call to reinforce effort in village regrouping in the 14 administrative areas of Elabered sub zone. In a meeting conducted with residents, Governor Ali indicated that even though the regional administration has been discussing the issue, regrouping villages in the sub zone has not been as successful and have become impediment to the  socio-economic development of the sub zone.  The Governor thus pointed that regrouping of villages will be the prior duty of area administrations in this year. Reminding area administrators to shoulder their responsibilities, Mr. Ali  also called on the administrators to exert effort with the objective of meeting public demands, facilitating the process of village regrouping among others. Residents on their part called for the alleviation of lack of social services in Deqi Andu, Sheib-Seleba, Adi-Berbere, Dembe-Habtesion as well as for the completion of the master plan of Eden sub urban center. According to the documents of the Anseba region, 75% of the master plan of Eden sub urban center has been completed.

The Eritrean national cultural troupe that has been performing in various Ethiopian cities beginning from 14 February under the theme “Cultural Tour for Peace” stages its final performance at the Millennium Hall in Addis Ababa. Asmara, 22 February 2019- The Eritrean national cultural troupe that has been performing in various Ethiopian cities beginning from 14 February under the theme “Cultural Tour for Peace” stages its final performance at the Millennium Hall in Addis Ababa. The performance that was attended by senior Eritrean and Ethiopian government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and invited guests was broadcast live by Ethiopian television. The objective of the program was to celebrate the peace and friendship agreement signed and to develop cultural relations between the two countries. The national cultural troupe comprising Sibrit and other legendary and young musicians and singers staged performance on 16 February in Bahr-Dar, on 17 in Adama and on 19 February in Hawassa.

At a seminar the nationals residing in Hamburg conducted on 16 February focusing on the objective situation in the homeland expressed readiness to contribute their part in the implementation of the national programs. The head of the Community and Public Affairs at the Eritrean Embassy in Germany, Mr. Kahsai Tewolde gave extensive briefing on the objective situation in the homeland and called for strengthening participation in the national development drives. In the same vein, Eritrean nationals in Manheim organized a program on 16 February in connection with the 29th anniversary of Fenkil Operation under the theme “Fenkil: Epitome of Heroic History”. Mr. Yohannes Berhane, chairman of the national committee, said that the heroic feat demonstrated during the armed struggle for independence will have significant input in facing challenges and that the event was organized to that effect.

According to report, the election process in the sub-zone took about two weeks and over 12 thousand people participated. Indicating that the community courts have been reduced from 15 to 13 in accordance with the directive of the Ministry of Justice, Mr. Russom Kiflemariam, administrator of Areza sub-zone, expressed appreciation for the strong participation of the public. The newly elected expressed readiness to shoulder the responsibility that has been bestowed on them and diligently serve the people that elected them. They also called the support of the residents in all their endeavors. According to the charted out development program, land for residential houses will be allotted in the villages of Zager, Tsehaflam and Afdeyu, four micro-dams will be constructed in various areas, select wheat seeds will be distributed to farmers for cultivation, terraces will be constructed around the Mai Nefhi and Adi-Sheka dams, over one million tree seedlings will be prepared from nine nurseries, effort will be exerted to strengthen the associations of poultry, bee and diary farmers, as well as others. According to report, the new policy takes into consideration timely national, regional and global health standards. According to report, the new policy takes into consideration timely national, regional and global health standards. Indicating that commendable progress has been so far achieved in the health sector, Ms. Amina Nurhussen, Minister of Health, gave extensive briefing on the effort exerted to prepare the new health policy document and its objective. Dr. Mismai Gebrehiwet, Advisor to the Minister of Health, indicated that the main reason for designing the new health policy was that with the unfolding peace prospect, free movement of peoples and the ever changing of people’s living standard the priority attention that was given to certain diseases has changed. Dr. Mismai went on to say that the goal of the new policy is to ensure global health services coverage, strengthening health service procedures as well as provision of equitable and effective health services. The participants on their part conducted extensive discussion of the new health policy document. The meeting was attended by Dr. Josephine Namboze, WHO Representative in Eritrea, heads of the Ministry of Health and professionals as well as representatives of the Ministries of Information, Agriculture, Finance and other stakeholders.

Elections of committees of reconciliation that has been conducted from 27 January through popular participation in the Central region concluded on 17 February. Asmara, 19 February 2019 - Elections of committees of reconciliation that has been conducted from 27 January through popular participation in the Central region concluded on 17 February. At a meeting conducted with residents, administrators of the sub zones of the Central region stated that the elections were conducted according to the directive the Ministry of Justice issued aimed at restructuring and reorganizing community courts and that campaigns that have been conducted contributed to the successful completion of the elections. According to the restructuring, the community court cases that were handled by three magistrates will now be handled through 5 committees of reconciliation that will include one judge and one prosecutor. Documents of the Central region indicate that, in the elections that lasted for three weeks, 15 community courts were established in the 13 sub zones of Asmara and that in Gala Nefhi and Serejaka sub zones 12 courts and in Berik sub zone 48 courts have been established.

Mr. Teklu Beraki, head of seeds development in the Southern region, indicated that preparation has been finalized to cultivate select wheat seeds on more that 500 hectares of land in the sub-zones of Mendefera and Emni-Haili. Mendefera, 19 February 2019- Mr. Teklu Beraki, head of seeds development in the Southern region, indicated that preparation has been finalized to cultivate select wheat seeds on more that 500 hectares of land in the sub-zones of Mendefera and Emni-Haili. Mr. Teklu indicated that last years the select wheat seeds have been cultivated on 100 hectares of land as a pilot project and that over 36 quintals per hectare has been collected. Senior researcher at the Halhale National Agricultural Research Institute, Mr. Neguse Abraha said that proper research and experiment has been conducted on the select wheat seed and that preparation has been finalized to distribute it to farmers for cultivation. Mr. Neguse further called on farmers to conduct sustainable soil and water conservation activities and use natural fertilizers for bounty produce. The administrators of the sub-zones also called on farmers to properly apply the advice they get from agricultural experts and expressed readiness to make regular follow up on the progress of the agricultural activities in the sub-zones.

Indicating that youth are backbones of the society, Mr. Saleh called on the youth to preserve the noble societal cultural values and strengthen participation in the national development endeavors and become exemplary to the younger generation. A meeting on providing priority to disadvantaged citizens in agricultural projects was held in Forto-Sawa sub-zone. Barentu, 18 February 2019- A meeting on providing priority to disadvantaged citizens in agricultural projects was held in Forto-Sawa sub-zone. The meeting was attended by representatives of the administrative areas and government employees of Wakai, Telay, Kulentebay, Girmaika, Fadadab, Temarat and Adibara. Indicating that the Government has been putting in place various agricultural projects aimed at improving the lives of citizens, Mr. Abubeker Mahmud, administrator of Forto Sawa sub-zone, called on the area administrators and village coordinators to identify disadvantaged citizens eligible to become beneficiaries of the projects. Mr. Abubeker also called on the farmers to prepare their lands for cultivation before the coming of the rainy season and the area administrators to work for the successful implementation of the projects. The participants on their part, commending the opportunity they were provided expressed readiness to live up to expectations in the success of the projects. In the same vein elections of area administrators and village coordinators was conducted in three administrative areas of Forto Sawa sub-zone. The election that was conducted at the administrative areas of Kulentebai and Wakai as well as at the Forto Sawa semi-urban center was aimed at replacing the outgoing area administrators and village coordinators. The newly elected area administrators and village coordinators expressed readiness to diligently serve the people that elected them.

The Ministry of Education on 14 and 15 February organized a workshop at Asmara Palace aimed at developing the national education standard. Asmara, 16 February 2019 -  The Ministry of Education on 14 and 15 February organized a workshop at Asmara Palace aimed at developing the national education standard. Noting that effort has been made to develop the educational policy and action plan for 2018-2022, Minister Semere said that the workshop is aimed at developing the draft of the national education standard. The director of Planning and Curriculum Development at the Ministry of Education, Mr. Abraham Russom, said that the staff members of the Ministry have been working to prepare the draft since 2014  and expressed expectation that the education standard will significantly contribute to the development of education in the country. The national education standard document includes capacity of teachers, management of schools, participation of students in term of gender, capacity of educational facilities, standard and safety of schools, curriculum implementation and other education related issues. The draft national education standard will be implemented in 36 schools as pilot project and will be presented to the Ministry of Education for full implementation in schools across the country.

Asmara, 15 February 2019- The Eritrean Ambassador to the Republic of South Sudan, Mr. Yohannes Teklemicael held talks on 13 February with President Salva Kiir Mayardit and Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Deng Dau Deng Malek. At the meeting held in Juba, President Salva Kiir and Ambassador Yohannes discussed on the progress of the understanding reached between President Isaias Afwerki and Presidents Salva Kiir during his official visit to Eritrea in August 2018. Indicating the historic relations between Eritrea and the Republic of South Sudan, President Salva Kiir wished good will to President Isaias Afwerki and the people of Eritrea. Likewise, Ambassador Yohannes met and held talks with the Deputy Foreign Minister, Mr. Deng Dau Deng Malek focusing on Eritrean investors in South Sudan. At the meeting in which heads of Eritrean community in Juba as well as Eritreans owners of trucks took part, Mr. Deng Dau Deng recalling the support the Eritrean people extended to the South Sudan people at the critical time in their history, expressed his country’s readiness to ensure the investment opportunities of Eritrean investors. In the same vein, Eritrean national associations in the US cities of Denver, Phoenix, San-Bernardino, San Diego, Los Angeles and Orange County organized discussion forum on 9 February with a view to share information on the objective situation in the homeland and strengthening contribution in the national development drives. Eritrean nationals residing in the Italian cities of Roma, Milano, Bologna, Parma, Firenze, Napoli, Catania and Bari also celebrated the 29th anniversary of Fenkil Operation. The celebrations were attended by a number of friends of Eritrea.

The Culture and Sports Department at the Northern Red Sea region conducted activity assessment meeting on 13 February in the port city of Massawa.   Massawa, 14 February 2019- The Culture and Sports Department at the Northern Red Sea region conducted activity assessment meeting on 13 February in the port city of Massawa. The meeting in which Eritrean and foreign experts took part was focused on the archeological and exploration activities as well as researches conducted and findings. At the meeting research papers on “Eritrea: Danakil Depression”, “Port of Adulis and its Significance”, ‘Research and Management of Cultural Heritage in the Northern red Sea region” as well as “Importance of Documentation of Cultural Heritage” were presented. In his presentation “Adulis Archeological Park”, Dr. Tsegai Medin, head of Archeology and Sociology Research at the Commission of Culture and Sports, gave extensive briefing on the research projects conducted and findings of important ancient traces in Engel Ela-Ramuda from 2012 to 2019 and in Buia from 1995 to 2019. Dr. Tsegai indicated that the findings have attracted the attention of many experts and that will be presented at the Barcelona annual festival to be held from 26 February to 6 March. Prof. Serena Massa, coordinator of the Adulis Archeological Research Project, in her research paper “Port of Adulis and Its Significance” gave detailed briefing on the historical background of the ancient port city of Adulis, its significance and influence in the economic, social and political sectors as well as the damage it sustained through continuous excavations. Prof. Serena said that new findings have been documented through the joint project that has been initiated beginning from 2011. Prof. Serena indicated that along side the archeological activities there is “Adulis Archeological Park” project aimed at developing the tourism resources of the area. The research papers “Research and Management of Cultural Heritage in the Northern Red Sea region” and “Importance of Documentation of Cultural Heritage” were presented by the staff members of the Commission of Culture and Sports. The participants conducted extensive discussion on the papers presented and adopted various recommendations. Speaking at the event, Brig. Gen. Tekle Libsu, Governor of the Northern Red Sea region, said that ancient heritages are the manifestations of our identity, history and culture and that the awareness of the society is vital for their preservation.

Indicating that Eritrea and Ethiopia signed the historic agreement after more than 20 years of hostility and conflict, Minister Osman Saleh said that effort is being exerted to strengthen economic cooperation between countries in the Horn of Africa. Minister Osman expressed expectation that European countries will support the program and that strong effort will be exerted to strengthen economic cooperation and partnership between Eritrea and the European Union. Potable water supply project worth around 2 million Nakfa has been put in place in Mai-Aini sub-zone. Mai-Aini, 13 February 2019 - Potable water supply project worth around 2 million Nakfa has been put in place in Mai-Aini sub-zone. The administrative areas of Ginesba, Maekono, Merbet and Emba-Arba will become beneficiaries of the project. The project includes installation of 6 km water pipelines, reservoir, 8.5 KW solar system as well as four water distribution centers. Mr. Kibrom Misghina, head of Water Resources in the Southern region, said that the project will supply potable water to about 1600 residents as well as the Mai-Aini community hospital and called for judicious use of water. Commending the participation of the public and the regional administration demonstrated in the implementation of the project, Mr. Kifle Mengis, villages’ coordinator in the region, called on the residents to assume responsibility of the management of the project. The residents on their part expressed that the potable water problem they have been facing for long has been alleviated and called for the construction of more water distribution centers.

Dekemhare hospital to expand health services

The Dekemhare hospital reported that effort is being exerted to expand eye and dental treatment services. Dekemhare, 13 February 2019- The Dekemhare hospital reported that effort is being exerted to expand eye and dental treatment services. Dental specialist, Dr. Efrem Kahsai indicated that the Dekemhare hospital is equipped with necessary facilities and man power to conduct dental surgery and treatment assisted with digital X-ray and that patients have been able to receive treatment nearby their residential areas. Dr. Efrem went on to say that the hospital has mobile unit to provide dental treatment in schools amd other remote areas. Dr. Efrem also said that commendable activity has been exerted to reduce the prevalence of cataract and eye irritation that have been common eye diseases in the area. Ophthalmologist Lewam Tesfaldet, on her part indicated that the Dekemhare hospital is providing treatment on eye related diseases. Ophthalmologist Lewam also said that as the result of the timely distribution of medicines and awareness raising programs the prevalence of Trachoma has significantly been reduced. The health professionals underlined that environmental sanitation is the best way of prevention of eye and dental problems and called for strengthening participation to that effect. Commending the praiseworthy treatment they are receiving, the beneficiaries expressed readiness to conduct regular environmental sanitation activities.

Keren, 11 February 2019- The head of Pharmacy in the Anseba region, Pharmacist Hagos Zerahaimanot called for proper use of medicines. Mr. Hagos underlined that applying medicines that are not prescribed by professionals could cause serious health consequence. Indicating on the importance of verifying the expiring date of medicines and proper storage, Pharmacist Hagos said that strong effort is being exerted in partnership with stakeholders to raise the awareness of the public on the proper use of medicines. Pharmacist Hagos went on to say that in the Anseba region there are four pharmacies, four drug shops and 21 rural pharmacies and that sustainable inspection follow up is being conducted on their day to day activities.

The official ceremony of the commemoration of the 29th anniversary of Operation Fenkil was conducted with enthusiasm under the theme ““Operation Fenkil: Epitome of Heroic History”.   Massawa, 10 February 2018 – The official ceremony of the commemoration of the 29th anniversary of Operation Fenkil was conducted with enthusiasm under the theme ““Operation Fenkil: Epitome of Heroic History”. Today in the morning hours, President Isaias Afwerki laid wreath at the Tiwalet Monument in connection with the Operation Fenkil. Mr. Alamin Mohammed Seid, Secretary of the PFDJ, Ms. Tekea Tesfamichael, and Chairwomen of the National Union of Eritrean Women and Brig. Gen. Tekle Libsu, Governor of the Northern Red Sea region also laid wreath at the Patriots Monument. At the official commemorative ceremony that was attended by senior government and PFDJ officials as well as a number of pilgrims and Massawa residents, the Chairperson of the Holidays Coordinating Committee in Northern Red Sea region, Ms. Zeineb Omar, said that this year’s commemoration of Operation Fenkil is unique for it is being celebrated following the peace and friendship agreement between Eritrea and Ethiopia. Ms. Zeineb also called for taking advantage of the opportunity for renewing commitment and strengthening participation in the nation building process. The administrator of the port city of Massawa, Mr. Haile Asfaha on his part said that this year’s commemoration of Operation Fenkil has deep meaning for it is being celebrated at the time of lifting the illegal sanctions that was imposed on Eritrea and expressed appreciation for those that contributed for the colorful celebration. The event was highlighted by cultural and artistic performances and other programs depicting the history and the heroic feats demonstrated during the Operation Fenkil to liberate Massawa.

President Alpha Conde of the Republic of Guinea arrived in Massawa today, 9 February, for an official visit in Eritrea. Massawa, 09 February 2019- President Alpha Conde of the Republic of Guinea arrived in Massawa today, 9 February, for an official visit in Eritrea. Upon arrival at the Massawa International Airport, President Alpha Conde was awarded warm welcome by President Isaias Afwerki and other senior government officials. President Isaias Afwerki and President Alpha Conde also discussed on the development of bilateral relations, strengthening the place of Africa at the international forum as well as strengthening the African Union. Commending the bold initiative President Isaias Afwerki and Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed took to restore peace and cooperation between Eritrea and Ethiopia, President Alpha Conde said that the exemplary initiative will have significant contribution in the peace and stability of the region. President Alpha Conde also said that at the discussion he came to understand that Eritrea and Guinea are in the same page on many issues and expressed appreciation for the warm welcome he and his delegation were accorded. At an activity assessment meeting conducted on 7 February, it was reported that effort is being exerted in cooperation with partners to implement the program of ensuring  community based health care service until 2020.   Asmara, 08 February 2019- At an activity assessment meeting conducted on 7 February, it was reported that effort is being exerted in cooperation with partners to implement the program of ensuring  community based health care service until 2020. At the meeting in which the Ms. Amina Nurhussen, Minister of Health, and the Governor of the Central region, Maj. Gen. Romodan Osman Awoliay took part, the head of the Ministry of Health branch in the region, Dr. Tesfai Solomon indicated that praiseworthy activities have been conducted in 2018 including the successful implementation of measles and rubella vaccination as well as distribution of Vitamin A in which over 99% children were vaccinated. According to the report presented at the meeting, in the Central region there are 16 health facilities providing delivery service and that the morality rate during delivery has significantly been reduced. The participants conducted extensive discussion on the report presented and adopted recommendations including alleviating the shortage of medicines and ambulances, strong measures for preventing harmful practices, as well as for conducting awareness raising program on the importance of popular environmental sanitation activities. Speaking at the event, Ms. Amina Nurhussen, Minister of Health, pointed out that integrated effort will be exerted to meet the Sustainable Development Goals. Minister Amina also said that there is plan to provide health service provision to remote areas of the country through mobile clinics.

President Isaias and Mr. Neven discussed on the cooperation ties between Eritrea and the EU within the framework of the recent peace and cooperation unfolding in the Horn of Africa and especially between Eritrea and Ethiopia. The project includes installation of two km of water pipelines, water reservoir, 10 KW solar system as well as two water distribution centers. As regards the water management, Priest Russom Gebrewahd, administrator of the administrative area, indicated that training has been provided to the water management committee by experts from the department of Water Resources and commended the Water Resources branch in the Southern region for the effort exerted to timely completion of the project. The residents indicated that supply of potable water has been the main challenge and that with the completion of the project their problem will be alleviated. Mr. Mihreteab Teklebrhan, administrator of the Segeneity sub-zone on his part called for judicious usage of the project.

Massawa, 05 February 2019 – Ms. Amina Nurhussien, Minister of Health stated that extra effort will be exerted to meet the demands of health institutions with the necessary resources and construction of infrastructures. Ms. Amina made the comment during an activity assessment meeting conducted on 31 January in the port city of Massawa, In a briefing she delivered at the meeting in which health practitioners in the region took part, Minister Amina indicated that commendable achievements have been registered in developing human capacity, putting in place of health facilities and expressed resolve that the effort will sustainably continue. Minister Amina also said that strong effort has been exerted nationwide to reduce maternity and child mortality rate, and called for reinforced participation with the objective of curbing maternity and infant mortality during delivery. Dr. Tesfay Tesfazgi, head of Health branch in the Northern Red Sea region, on his part commending the health professionals for their effort withstanding location and climate challenges and nomadic lifestyle of residents, indicated that new health institution constructed in Ela-Babu administrative area, Adobha sub zone, has started providing service and that another health institution is under construction in Bada. The participants conducted extensive discussion regarding pre and post natal services, vaccination coverage, community-based environmental sanitation activities, as well as controlling and prevention of communicable and non-communicable diseases visa-avis strengths and weaknesses encountered. Speaking at the event, Brig. Gen. Tekle Libsu, Governor of the Northern Red Sea region, commending the progress in providing equitable and quality health service, expressed readiness to support in all activities aimed at ensuring the health of the society.
