Pointing out that he was impressed to observe the activities of various mining companies in Eritrea take notice on the environmental safety, Mr. Edward Mounsey, Manager of the Asmara Mining Sh. Co., called on the National Association of Chemical Engineers to organize similar programs with a bid to develop the understanding of its members. It is to be recalled that the National Association of Chemical Engineers established in April 2018 is contributing its part in the development of industries and industrial products.

The participants conducted extensive discussion on the report presented and adopted various recommendations including the expansion of sweet potato, bee and poultry farming. Speaking at the meeting the Governor of the Gash Barka region, Mr. Fesehaye Haile called for sustainable water and soil conservation activities with a view to redress the environment and boost agricultural production.

The workshop was sponsored by the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC), and was attended by senior officials from Police, Prosecution Authorities, and Office of Attorney General from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Uganda. The participants conducted extensive discussion on relevant legal framework of crimes prevention, on significance of information exchange and cooperation, challenges of cross border crimes, human trafficking and smuggling of migrants and on other issues that help in reducing crimes. The participants also shared experiences on the activities of Interpol, digital investigation, financial investigation, organized crimes as well as cyber-crime and cyber –enabled crime and other relevant issues.

At the regular meeting in which Maj. Gen. Romodan Osman Awliyay, Governor of the Central region, Mr. Yousuf Saiq, chairman of PFDJ branch in the Central region, heads of departments and branches of line ministries, as well as administrators of subzones took part, Mr. Abraham Semere, Chairman of the Assembly, stated that the congress is unique for it was conducted during an era of peace and the lifting of the unjustified sanction imposed on Eritrea, underscored that the Assembly of the Central region has been exerting effort to implement charted out development programs alongside concerned institutions. At the meeting reports by committees of economic development, social services, culture and tradition as well as law and regulations were presented. The participants conducted extensive discussion on the reports presented and adopted recommendations. Speaking at the event, Maj. Gen. Romodan Osman Awliyay indicated that effort will be exerted to implement projects according to their priority through active participation of the public and stakeholders. The Assembly concluded its regular meeting by issuing 19 point joint statement including strengthening soil and water conservation, renovation of roads and sewerage system among others.

In the same vein, Ambassador Yohannes conducted seminar to Eritrean truck owners in Juba on the objective situation in the homeland. Likewise, the Charge d’Affairs at the Eritrean Embassy in Kuwait, Mr. Humed Yahya Hali met and held talks with the Kuwaiti Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Hamid Suleiman Al-Meshal focusing on bilateral relations. Indicating that Kuwait has been supporting the Eritrean people since the armed struggle for independence, Mr. Humed Yahya expressed readiness to work for strengthening the historic relations between the two countries. The Eritrean Ambassador to Italy, Dr. Fesehatsion Petros also conducted seminar on 27 January to Eritrean nationals residing in Milano, on the objective situation in the homeland and the progress of the peace unfolding in the region. The participants expressed resolve to strengthen contribution in the strengthening of the peace process.

Asmara, 30 January 2019- A three-day workshop aimed at strengthening International and Regional Police Cooperation in Eastern Africa organized in cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Eritrea, IGAD and Interpol commenced today, 30 January, at Asmara Palace. Speaking at the opening event, Col. Mehari Tsegai, Commander of the Eritrean Police, said that no country in the world is immune from crime and that the East African region is facing with challenges and threats, including human trafficking and smuggling of migrants, drug and small arm trafficking etc. Col. Mehari underlined that if the crimes are left unabated they will threaten the social, economic and political stability of the region and that it is joint responsibility of the countries of region to secure the safety and security of their citizens. Col. Mehari went on to say that the governments and their police forces need bilateral agreements based on legality and cooperation to overcome the problems they are facing. The workshop is attended by criminal justice practitioners from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Uganda, and will cover the areas of Interpol, digital investigation, financial investigation, organized crime, trafficking of persons and smuggling of migrants.

The National Association of  Eritrean War Disabled Veterans stated that in 2018 it has received tens of thousands of Dollars worth material and monetary support from its branches in abroad. According to report, the association has received over 66 thousand Dollars as well as medical equipments to its Optical Center, wheelchairs, medicines and other support from its branches in Sweden, Holland and Germany. Speaking to Erina, Mr. Gebrebrhan Iyasu, chairman of the National Association of Eritrean War Disabled Veterans noted that the support the branch organizations are providing is significantly contributing in alleviating the physical and economic challenges of the disabled veterans. He also said that the association is giving priority to the most disadvantaged and aged veterans. Mr. Gebreberhan further called on citizens particularly the association branches to enhance contribution.

The nationals made the contribution at an event they organized in connection with the International Day of the Disabled. At the handing over ceremony held at the Central Office of the association, Mr. Habteyesus Kileyesus, member of the group and resident of California, indicated that the members of the Paltalk group have been taking various initiatives to assist the association and that this contribution is in continuation of that initiative. The Chairman of the NAEWDV, Mr. Gebrebrhan Eyasu said that the responsibility of assisting the war disabled veterans is not to be left to the Government alone and that the contribution attests to the value and honor the nationals have towards the war disabled veteran fighters. According to report, in the past two years, the “EPLF Vision Room” Paltalk group has contributed 72 thousand Dollars in support of families of martyrs and 4,300 Dollars towards augmenting martyrs trust fund. The “EPLF Vision Room” Paltalk group is cyber-linked group of nationals residing in various parts of  the world and was established before two years.

The signing was done in Budapest where Eritrean delegation composed of Foreign Minister Osman Saleh and Presidential Adviser Yemane Ghebreab are on a three-day working visit to that country. During the bilateral meeting that preceded the signing of the agreement, Hungarian Foreign Minister, Mr. Peter Szijjarto congratulated Eritrea for the peace agreement signed with Ethiopia and stated that the new developments will create very conducive environment for enhanced cooperation. During its stay in Budapest the Eritrean delegation will meet other officials and business community.

Minister Amina also called for integrated effort on the part of stakeholders and concerned bodies for realizing the 2017-2021 Strategic Development Goals. According to the report presented by Dr. Kesetebrhan Solomon, head of the branch office, the number of pregnant women delivering in health facilities has increased significantly, the coverage of vaccinations has reached to 76% and commendable effort has been conducted in cooperation with the Gash Barka region to control the prevalence of communicable diseases. The participants conducted extensive discussion on the report presented and adopted various recommendations.

At the workshop assessment was conducted on the environmental sanitation activities conducted over the past ten years and road map was designed to be implemented from 2019 to 2020. Indicating that sanitation is vital for nurturing developed and healthy society, Mr. Tesfatsion Girmai, head of Social Service at the Anseba region, called for integrated effort for better outcome. According to report presented from the 295 villages in the Anseba region 201 (68%) have become beneficiaries of latrines, 47 villages are in the process and the remaining will become beneficiaries until 2020. Pointing out that transportation shortage, lack of village regrouping, deficiency of skilled human power and resources have been the bottlenecks, call was made to conduct sustainable awareness raising campaigns, villages regrouping as well as sustainable follow-up and monitoring at the administrative areas and village levels. Mr. Berhane Gebrekidan, head of the Ministry of Health branch in the region, on his part underlined on the importance of environmental sanitation activities in preventing the prevalence of communicable diseases.

Asmara, 28 January 2019- The Eritrean Cycling National Team emerged victorious at the 14th Amissa Bongo Cycling competition held in Gabon from 21 to 27 January. The Eritrean national team comprised Daniel Teklehaimanot, Metkel Eyob, Henok Mulubrhan, Biniam Girmai, Sirak Tesfom and Aaron Debretsion. Sirak Tesfom won the “King of the Mountain of Amissa Bongo” competition while Henok Mulubrahan “Best Young Rider”. At the competition in which Niccolo Bonifazia from the French Team ‘Direct Energie’ became overall winner, Sirak Tesfom stood fifth, Metkel Eyob sixth, Daniel Teklehaimanot ninth and Henok Mulubrhan tenth and at a team level Eritrea emerged winner. The Amissa Bongo cycling competition is one of the renowned cycling races in Africa. Cycling National teams from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Algeria, Morocco, Mauritius, Cameron, Gabon and Burkina Faso as well as renowned teams from France, Italy and South Africa took part.

In opening remarks, Mr. Semere Russom, Minister of Education, explained that conducting annual activity assessment has significant contribution in identifying strengths and challenges and there by developing the provision of quality education. Indicating that effort has been made to develop the educational policy and plan of action for 2018-2022, to revise the curriculum and its impact as well as to develop human resources, Minister Semere said that the overall revision of the education sector is being finalized. According to the reports presented at the meeting, various researches and training programs have been conducted with a view to develop the teaching-learning process, text books in all languages have been prepared, rigorous campaigns have been conducted aimed at expanding educational facilities and supply of educational materials. The participants conducted extensive discussion on the reports presented and adopted various recommendation including organizing capacity upgrading training programs for teachers and other issues pertinent to the development of the teaching-learning process. They also discussed on the implementation of the action plan for 2019.

Qatari-Government funded TV Channel, Al Jazeera, published last week a defamatory article on Eritrea under the baffling title: «From Abu Dhabi to Washington, how Eritrea turned into a new African weapon”. Qatari-Government funded TV Channel, Al Jazeera, published last week a defamatory article on Eritrea under the baffling title: »From Abu Dhabi to Washington, how Eritrea turned into a new African weapon”. The unsigned article, which evidently reflects the editorial policy of the Channel, is but the latest in a series of gratuitous smear campaigns that the Channel has been churning out intermittently both in its English and Arabic TV broadcasts as well as in its printed media websites. What has prompted Al Jazeera to wage relentless smear campaigns against Eritrea in the past few years remains a riddle that the corporation has to explain.  What is more puzzling is Al Jazeera’s audacity and duplicity to liberally impugn Eritrea (and other countries in the Gulf-Horn of Africa region) for “foreign policy adventures” when it keeps mum on Qatar’s military interventions in Libya and Syria or on matters of the large US  military base Doha has hosted for decades. Let us now revert and address Al Jazeera’s wayward conduct and spurious allegations: 1.    First off, Eritrea is not in the business of “mortgaging its territory” for “military bases” to  external powers: US, Russia or others.  The fact is Eritrea has never gone out of its way “to offer military bases to the US”, or others who may indulge such ambitions, in order to curry favour with them or for short-term financial gains.  Naturally, it has an interest in cultivating warm diplomatic and economic ties with the US and other countries on the basis of mutual respect. 2.    Eritrea does not, also, pursue reckless policies and “military alliances with external powers” to advance strategies that precipitate instability and wreck havoc in the region.  But, as a littoral Red Sea State, it has natural and legitimate interests in promoting and contributing, within its modest capabilities, to collective and viable security architectures for combating terrorism, piracy and other hegemonic designs that stoke crises to destabilize this vital international maritime route. 3.    Al Jazeera falsely claims that Eritrea has offered military bases to Iran in the past.  In the same breadth, Al Jazeera asserts that Eritrea also hosts “military presence and Israeli espionage center in the Dahlak Islands”. These allegations are not only patently false but they also defy logic and common sense.  How can Eritrea host two mortal enemies in its territory?  Would Eritrea be so blind to mix oil and fire and render itself a battlefield with all the perils that this entails?   Furthermore, and this palpable arguments aside, Al Jeezera knows full well that there are no military bases in the Dahlak islands as these sites have long been destinations of ongoing Tourism Projects.  4.     In pursuit of its strident and zealous disinformation campaigns, Al Jeezera further asserts, in the same article, that "the European Union agreed in 2015 to grant a package of 200 million Euros to Eritrea with promises to train the security and judicial services to combat human trafficking ... and that in fact it can be classified as a common European bribe”.  As it is well-known, Eritrea acceded in 1993, immediately after its formal independence, to the Cotonou Agreement that brings together the EU and 75 African and Caribbean countries.  A cursory examination of publicly available documents would have revealed that Eritrea has benefitted from EU development funds (EDF) that are disbursed to all ACP signatories in five-year cycles.  The 200 million Euro support that Al Jazeera cites is indeed part and parcel of this 11th EDF development assistance that the EU implements with all ACP member States. Al Jeezera’s distortion of this normative relationship is thus factually wrong and amplifies its malice or utter ignorance.  And in as far as illegal migration from Eritrea is concerned, the phenomenon was originally concocted by certain countries to wean the youth and undermine Eritrea’s defense capabilities.   That was the reason why Eritrea expressly requested the UN to carry out an independent investigation of this despicable crime of human trafficking with a view to redress the injustices perpetrated on the country. The Ministry of Information had lodged formal complaints to Al Jeezera several times in the past in the hope of finding remedies to these unwarranted and erroneous reports.  These approaches were never heeded, apparently because the disinformation campaigns emanate from a deliberate policy to advance some negative agenda.  Although these campaigns may confuse some of its audiences in the short term, Al Jeezera is the loser at the end of the day as this unhealthy conduct will ultimately corrode its own reputation.

Speaking at the meeting, the head of the branch office, Dr. Hayelom Kidane said that commendable activities have been exerted with strong participation of public in controlling the prevalence of communicable and non-communicable diseases and successful implementation of measles and rubella vaccination program as well as distribution of Vitamin A. According to reports presented by the health experts, sustainable awareness raising programs have been conducted including in remote areas of the region and as a result the prevalence of communicable diseases have significantly been reduced. They also called for increased participation of all stakeholders and the public for better outcome. Indicating that the Ministry of Health is working by designing national health strategic plan with a view to realize the Sustainable Development Goals, Ms. Amina Nurhusein, Minister of Health, called on the health practitioners to work on partnership with stakeholders for bringing positive change among the public.

The Sweden branch of the National Association of Eritrean War Disabled Veterans and youth residing in Israel pledge to boost contribution in support of the families of martyrs and war disabled veterans. Asmara, 24 January 2019 - The Sweden branch of the National Association of Eritrean War Disabled Veterans and youth residing in Israel pledge to boost contribution in support of the families of martyrs and war disabled veterans. According to report, at the event they organized on 19 January, Eritrean youth grouped in “Finote Semaetat” association contributed 15,750 Dollars in support of families of martyrs. The group had already assumed responsibility of supporting 250 families of martyrs. Speaking at the occasion, the Charge d’Affairs at the Eritrean Embassy in Israel, Mr. Solomon Kinfe expressed appreciation for the initiative the nationals are taking. In the same vein, the National Association of Eritrean War Disabled Veterans branch in Sweden organized a program in connection with the International Day of the Disabled under the theme “Pledge for Bright Future”. At the event the nationals contributed 24 thousand Kroner in support of the war disabled veterans. The Chairman of the branch association, Mr. Tekeste Fesehaye indicated that effort will be exerted to design income generating projects to enable the war disabled veterans become self supportive and productive members of the society. Likewise, the YPFDJ organization in South Sudan organized capacity upgrading training for its members.

Akordet Vocational Training Center is making significant contribution in nurturing competent youth. Akordet, 22 January 2019- Akordet Vocational Training Center is making significant contribution in nurturing competent youth. According to Mr. Osman Abdu, head of the training center, the mission of the center is to equip the youth with various skills and enable them become self-supportive and that to date the center in its third round is providing vocational training to 150 youth. Mr. Osman further indicated that the eight months training includes irrigation farming, electronics, electricity, ceramics, weaving and construction as well as English language, book keeping and basic computer application. The Akordet Vocational Training Center that was established in 2017 under the auspices of the Ministry of Education provides vocational training to youth from 16 to 25 years of age that could not have the opportunity of joining formal education.

Mr. Gebrezgiabhier noted that the main goals of the strategic plan are to enhance the independence of the Office of the Auditor General, to strengthen the organization and management capacity of the OAG, to enhance the competency and productivity of the human resources, to enhance the quality of audit services to increase the value of the OAG as well as to enhance its image by improving communication with stakeholders. According to Mr. Gebrezgiabhier, the mission of the Office of the Auditors General that was established with proclamation No. 23/1992 and later repealed and replaced with proclamation No. 37/1993 is to audit all Government institutions and parastatals and State owned enterprises. At the ceremony in which heads of financial institutions took part briefing was provided on the main objective, mission and core vales of the strategic plan. The office also received award of recognition from the African Organization for Supreme Audit Institutions (AFROSI).

According to the report the Chairman of the NCEW, Mr. Tekeste Baire presented, it was indicated that in the past two years the confederation has been engaged in foiling external conspiracies against the homeland and that with the prevailing peace prospect the priority will be given to strengthening organizational capacity and harmonizing plan of action in congruent with unfolding situation. Mr. Tekeste reiterated that priority will also be given to organizing training programs with a view to develop vocational skill of workers to enable them become productive and innovative as well as creating conducive atmosphere at work places in cooperation with employers. At the meeting reports were presented focusing on workers organizations, work relationships, administration and finance, women workers, human resources development as well as international relations. The participants adopted recommendations including organizing training programs in accordance with timely needs, ensuring the implementation of labor agreements, strengthening relations with professional associations, alleviating challenges of the labor unions at all levels, preserving the work ethics of the NCEW, expansion of membership and other issues relevant to the confederation. The congress also adopted activity plan for 2019.

The community magistrates on their part, stating that most of the cases that were filed at the magistrate courts in 2018 were peacefully resolved, reiterated the significance of the magistrates’ provision of free and accountable legal service to the public.

Indicating that in past 25 years the number of residents in the administrative area has significantly increased, Mr. Mohammed-Idris said that effort is being made to put in place social service provision institutions with a view to satisfy the demands of the residents. Pointing out that there are educational and health facilities as well potable water supply project put in place in the administrative area, Mr. Mohammed-Idris said that currently there are over 1200 students enrolled in schools ranging from pre-school to junior high school and students’ school enrolment is steadily growing. Mr. Mohammed-Idris went on to say that the master plan of Gizgiza is being finalized and consultation is underway with concerned bodies to expand and develop the health station in the area. Gizgiza administrative area is located 30 km north of Keren city and is resident to seven thousand people.

Minister Woldemicael pointing out that the government is putting in place big agricultural projects aimed at boosting agricultural production, indicated that effort will be made to provide farmers the opportunity of becoming beneficiaries of the projects. Regarding construction, Minister Woldemicael indicated that construction of residential houses has resumed in the villages and semi-urban centers and effort is being made to resume in the cities in accordance with the basic demands. The participants conducted extensive discussion on the reports presented and adopted recommendations including allotment of lands for construction of residential houses, village regroupings, putting in place social service provision institutions, as well as educational and health facilities and others.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Arefaine Berhe, Minister of Agriculture, indicated that soil and water conservation activities, development and distribution of select seeds, development of poultry farming, control of the Fall Armyworms, expansion of the introduction of smokeless ovens are among the charted out programs for 2019.

The vaccination program was conducted from 21 to 30 November 2018 nationwide. According to reports presented, out of the expected 155,427 children from 9 to 15 years of age 154,047 have been vaccinated and 55,583 received Vitamin A. The success of the program was as a result of the persistent participation on the part of the public, administrations and health practitioners. The reports also indicated that 175 groups and 375 health practitioners took part in the program. Indicating that the contribution of the task forces formed in each sub-zone had significant contribution in the success of the vaccination program, the head of the National Vaccination Program at the Ministry of Health, Mr. Tedros Yidego said that the coverage of the vaccination program at national level was 90%. The head of the Vaccination Program at the Ministry of Health branch in the Northern Red Sea region, Mr. Furtunato Mario, on his part said that the successful implementation of the program attests to the increased awareness of the public on the significance of vaccination and that important experience has been gained for the successful implementation of the other vaccination programs that will be conducted in 2019. Speaking at the meeting, the Governor of the region, Brig. Gen. Tekle Lebsu pointed out that without ensuring the health of the society it will be difficult to build a developed and prosperous country and commended the participation of all stakeholders in the success of the program.

Mr. Tekeste Mehari, General Consul at the Eritrean Embassy in Australia and New Zealand, handed over prizes to winners of various competitions. In the same vein, the National Union of Eritrean Women branch in Cologne, Germany, organized an event on 12 January in connection with the International Day of the Disabled under the theme “Pledge for Bright Future”. At the program that was highlighted with cultural performances, Ms. Dehab Eyasu, the Chairwoman of the union branch, delivered message of the National Association of Eritrean War Disabled Veterans. At the event, the participants of the program contributed 1,600 Euros in support of the war disabled veterans.

He further stated that new HIV/AIDS infection rate was reduced significantly. Dr. Amanuel, however, went on to say that the prevalence of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, high BP is on the rise and demands special attention. The participants on their part stating that diseases transmitting from animals to humans, particularly rabies is on the rise and called on the Ministry of Health for immediate intervention. Speaking at the event, Ms. Amina Nurhussien, Minister of Health, commending institutions for their integrated effort in realizing the charted out programs, called for reinforced engagement of the public in ensuring community based environmental sanitation campaigns. In 2018, 161 people died due to traffic accidents, while 1,250 people sustained injuries. Damages to property amounted to more than 45.4 million Nakfa. There were over 100,000 traffic violations registered in 2018, while 2,136 of the accidents were caused by drivers between the ages of 30 to 59. Noting that drunk drinking, mobile phone use, and speeding are among the main causes of traffic accidents, the Office of Police Traffic called on all drivers to abide by traffic laws and support police traffic officers in their efforts. The report also called on schools, in collaboration with the Office of Police Traffic, to organize seminars for students on traffic laws and safety.

There are 17 artisan fishermen cooperatives in the region and over 4 million Nakfa in loans and material support was provided to the cooperatives in 2018. It was also indicated that in 2019 enhanced efforts will be made to strengthen artisan fishermen cooperatives and increase membership, establish a refrigerated store, introduce modern fishing techniques, organize workshops on fishing and business management, and offer other training programs related to fishing and fishing boats. Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Mehammed Iyah, managing director of the Ministry of Marine Resources branch in the region, called for the support of the regional administration in increasing fish production and improving the socio-economic livelihoods of fishermen. Ambassador Mehammed-Seid Mantay, Governor of Southern Red Sea region, noted the importance of the fishing sector to the nation’s goals of achieving food security and expressed the administration’s readiness to improve production.
