Encouraging result of select wheat

The select wheat seed that was provided to 230 farmers in Mendefera sub-zone and that was cultivated at 56 hectares of land has produced encouraging result. Mendefera, 21 December 2018- The select wheat seed that was provided to 230 farmers in Mendefera sub-zone and that was cultivated at 56 hectares of land has produced encouraging result. The report was made by the Ministry of Agriculture branch in Mendefera sub-zone. At an assessment meeting conducted on 19 December, the ample distribution of rainfall coupled with the strong effort of the farmers it was able to produce 160 thousand quintals from 13 thousand hectares of land. According to a report presented by Mr. Bereket Teklesenbet, head of the branch, said that the sustainable awareness raising programs and the use of composed fertilizers as well as the soil and water conservation activities have contributed in incre3ased agricultural production. It was also reported that from the 185 thousand tree seedlings planted 75% are in good condition. The administrator of the sub-zone, Mr. Hiskias Wuhbet indicated that strong effort is being exerted to enable farmers become self supportive and supply their produce to the local market and expressed readiness of the sub-zonal administration contribute its due part in the effort to boost agricultural production.

Mendefera, 20 December 2018 – The Ministry of Labor and Human Welfare branch in Adi Keih sub zone extended material support to 10 disabled citizens in Tekondae and Adi-Kanta administrative areas. According to Mr. Gebriel Kahsai the disadvantaged citizens were identified by the administrative areas and were provided each with 10 thousand Nakfa worth livestock. The beneficiaries on their part thanking the Government for the support they have been provided expressed readiness to work hard for improving their livelihood.

The National Union of Eritrean Women Central Committee conducted two-day meeting from 17 to 18 December to discuss of the programs designed to develop socio-economic capacity of women and their participation in political activities. Asmara, 20 December 2018- The National Union of Eritrean Women Central Committee conducted two-day meeting from 17 to 18 December to discuss of the programs designed to develop socio-economic capacity of women and their participation in political activities. Indicating the significance of increased awareness and organizational capacity of women at the time of peace prevailing in the region, Ms. Tekea Tesfamicael, President of the NUEW, said that due attention will be given in 2019 for empowering women in all sectors. At the meeting in which heads of regional unions from inside the country and abroad took part, report on the activities of 2018 were presented. According to the reports major activities have been implemented including increasing the participation of women in education, encouraging pregnant women to deliver in health facilities, financial and material support to disadvantaged women and families of martyrs among others. The meeting also adopted program for 2019.

According to report, the Eritrean Embassy in the Scandinavian countries organized a discussion forum focusing the progress of the peace agreement between Eritrea and Ethiopia as well as the lifting of sanctions that was illegally imposed on Eritrea. The discussion forum was attended by representatives of Eritrean communities in the Scandinavian countries, officials from the Foreign Ministry of Sweden, members of African embassies in Sweden, as well as Eritrean friends and journalists. Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Yonas Manna, Charge d’Affairs at the Eritrean Embassy in the Scandinavian countries, said that the new era of peace and cooperation in the region is the result of the perseverance and commitment of the people and Government of Eritrea, Mr. Yonas said that the peace and cooperation agreement between Eritrea and Ethiopia will have significant contribution in the stability and development in the Horn of Africa. Likewise, the Eritrean community in Austria participated at the International Bazaar Vienna organized on 16 December portraying Eritrea’s tourism resources, historical heritages and traditional food as well as traditions of the Eritrean ethnic groups. The International Bazaar that in which over 70 countries was visited by about 20 thousand visitors.

The Ministry of Tourism branch in the Northern Red Sea region organized a seminar on 17 December in Massawa to owners of social service provision institutions aimed at providing efficient and timely service. Massawa, 19 December 2018- The Ministry of Tourism branch in the Northern Red Sea region organized a seminar on 17 December in Massawa to owners of social service provision institutions aimed at providing efficient and timely service. Indicating that the Northern Red Sea region is endowed with tourism attraction sites, Mr. Mogos Asgedom, D. G. of Tourism in the region, said that there is expectation that the number of foreign tourists will increase with the new era of peace and called on the social service provision institutions to improve their standards that fit the requirements of tourists. Pointing out that strengthening management capacity is essential for providing competent and timely service, Mr. Mogos went on to say that integrated effort and hospitality adhering to the noble societal values is paramount for the development of  the sector. At the meeting briefings were presented focusing on environmental sanitation, ensuring safety of visitors, as well as respect to regulations and laws on the part of social service provision institutions. The participants on their part said that such seminars and meeting will have significant contribution in developing their activities and called for its sustainability.

At the seminar organized on 15 December focusing on the objectives and profession of teaching, Mr. Belay Habtegaber, head of Education in the Central region, stating the significant contributions of the Association in Education called on teachers to strengthen effort to upgrade and develop their professional capacity. In a briefing she gave on the teaching profession and development of teachers, Dr. Halima Mohammed, from the Ministry of Education on her part, noting the teaching profession produces professional human power in all sectors, called on the Association of the Eritrean Teachers to nurture its members with humanity and moral attitudes. Chairman of the Association of Eritrean Teachers branch in the Central region, Mr. Afewerki Gebrezgiabhier on his part, called on participants to share the message conveyed at the seminar with their colleagues. During the graduation ceremony conducted on 17 December, the D.G. of the deptment, Mr. Hailemicael Eyob stated that the objective of the one month theoretical and practical training, was to enhance capacity of members on research based studies on expansion of agricultural activities, seed development and livestock production, as well as ensuring water supply among others. Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Arefaine Berhe, Minister of Agriculture, stating the training and the research papers the trainees presented reinforces the mega agricultural effort on the ground and recognizing its significance, expressed the Ministry’s readiness to sustainably continue organizing similar trainings. Maj. Gen. Romadan Osman Awliyay, Governor of the Central region, on his part underscoring the fact that the training is youth centered, sheds light on the willingness on the part of the Ministry to sustainably reinforce agricultural development programs, expressed the Central region’s readiness to play due part in the success of similar projects. The trainees on their part, presented research papers they prepared based on the knowledge they have acquired.

The Proceedings of the International Conference of Eritrean Studies (ICES), held in Asmara from 20-22 July 2016, have been compiled in two volumes. Asmara, 15 December 2018 - The Proceedings of the International Conference of Eritrean Studies (ICES), held in Asmara from 20-22 July 2016, have been compiled in two volumes. The launching ceremony of the two volumes was conducted yesterday, 14 December. During the launching ceremony that the National Institute of Higher Education and Research organized at Hotel Emba Soira in which higher government officials, representatives of UN bodies and other concerned partners attended, it was stated that Volume 1 spans 687 pages and has 30 papers by 36 authors in 11 thematic areas, and Volume 2 has 495 pages and contains 23 papers. The research papers compiled cover a range of issues on literature, art, history, socio-cultural issues, gender, law, earth science and disasters, technological developments as well as other issues of interests. Speaking at the occasion, the Executive Director of the National Institute of Higher Education and Research, Dr. Haile Mihtsun stating the significance of and lessons learned from the compilation of the Proceedings of the International Conference of Eritrean Studies, indicated that the Institute is making preparations to hold similar conference.

Asmara, 15 December 2018- President Isaias Afwerki returned home in the afternoon hours of today, 15 December, concluding three-day working visit to the Republic of Somalia and Republic of Kenya. President Isaias held discussion with President Uhuru Kenyatta at the Nairobi National Palace on strengthening bilateral relations and regional developments of interest to the two countries. The two leaders noting the potential opportunities of cooperation between Eritrea and Kenya agreed to work to develop partnership in the trade and investment sectors as well as to the peace and stability in the Republic of Somalia. President Uhuru Kenyatta will conduct official visit to Eritrea in January 2019 at an initiation of President Isaias Afwerki. It is to be recalled that, President Isaias conducted two-day official visit to Somalia and held discussion with President Mohammed Abdullahi Mohammed of the Republic of Somalia on a number issues of interest to the two countries. The call was made at a seminar organized for owners of service rendering institutions on 12 December at Central region Hall, here in the capital. At the occasion in which Ms. Askalu Menkorious, Minister of Tourism, Maj. Gen. Romadan Osman Awliyay, Governor of the Central region, Mr. Yousuf Saiq, Chairman of PFDJ in Central region, and others participated, Ms. Liya Gebreab, D.G. the Department of Tourism at the Central region, stated that the department conducted praiseworthy effort in ensuring the quality of services and sanitation of the service rendering institutions. Stating that there are over 1500 service rendering institutions in the Central region, Ms. Liya underscored that the department has conducted regulatory actions on over 1300 of the institutions and that certificates of awards were handed over to 36 exemplary institutions. The Trade Fair that was officially opened on 11 December by Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of Egypt, was organized in cooperation with the African Union Commission, Afreximbank and the Government of Egypt. The Eritrean delegation led by Mr. Hagos Gebrehiwet, head of Economic Affairs of the PFDJ, participated at the conference aimed at development of trade and investment cooperation among African countries. Mr. Hagos also met and held talks with Afreximbank President, Dr. Benedict Oramah on strengthening funding of projects. President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmajo, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia and President Isaias Afwerki, President of the State of Eritrea, held a two-day consultation meeting in Mogadishu, Somalia on December 13th-14th 2018. President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmajo, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia and President Isaias Afwerki, President of the State of Eritrea, held a two-day consultation meeting in Mogadishu, Somalia on December 13th-14th 2018. The two Presidents held bilateral discussions at Villa Somalia and they agreed to strengthen the two nations historical relations through further cooperation in all areas of mutual benefit including trade, investment and people to people relations. Both Presidents reaffirmed their commitment to enhance the momentum in the Horn of Africa Cooperation with a focus on regional partnership for common development, progress and prosperity. President Isaias welcomes and supports the Somali Government’s endeavor in establishing Somali-led security institutions that have the ability to provide the peace and security that the people of Somalia deserve. Fully aware of the need for comprehensive and coordinated approach to tackle the modern-day risks of terrorism and poverty, the two leaders agreed to continue to forge a strong partnership that benefits the two nations and the region. The two leaders emphasized that there are many common challenges ahead for which they will seek a common solution. Furthermore, they agreed to consolidate their mutual solidarity and support in addressing challenges that their nations face individually and collectively. President Isaias Afwerki departs today, 13 December for a working visit to Federal Republic of Somalia and Republic of Kenya. Asmara, 13 December 2018- President Isaias Afwerki departs today, 13 December for a working visit to Federal Republic of Somalia and Republic of Kenya. The historic visit of President Isaias to Somalia is in continuation of the consultative summits between the leaders of Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. The first visit of President Isaias to Somalia is also based on the historical ties between the two countries. Upon arrival in Mogadishu, President Isaias was accorded warm welcome by President Mohammed Abdullahi Mohammed and other senior Somali government officials accompanied with the national anthem of the two countries. The two leaders also held discussion at the National Palace on bilateral relations. President Isaias will proceed from Mogadishu to Nairobi at an invitation of President Uhuru Kenyatta of the Republic of Kenya. The two leaders will discuss on the role of Kenya in the peace and cooperation prevailing in the Horn of Africa and on strengthening trade and investment between Eritrea and Kenya. The participants conducted extensive discussion on the expansion and standard of latrines in villages, challenges in the efforts to ensure environmental sanitation, community participation as well as follow-up on the part of the concerned institutions. Indicating on the importance of the conference in ensuring community led total sanitation in 2022, Ms. Amina Nurhussen, Minister of Health, said that important ideas have been forwarded that could help in realizing the program ahead of time. Prices were also handed over to winners of the general knowledge competition that was conducted between 10 junior high school students in the Central region.

Asmara, 12 December 2018 - A two-day national conference on community-led sanitations is being conducted at the Asmara Palace Hotel. The conference is being attended by senior government and PFDJ officials, representatives from the country’s six administrative regions, village elders, stakeholders and other invited guests. At the meeting, briefings are being provided on increasing societal awareness of environmental sanitation and the use of latrines, strengthening the activities of social service institutions, integrating environmental sanitation activities, the role of the private sector in sanitation activities, and the importance of societal behavioral changes, among other relevant issues. Indicating that environmental sanitation and clean water contribute to socio-economic development and a healthy society, Ms. Amina Nurhussein, Minister of Health, said that keeping the environment clean is an important national priority. She added that it also helps reduce the prevalence of communicable diseases and ensures the health of  the society, particularly mothers and children. Pointing out the significance of the participation of stakeholders  and other relevant institutions, Minister Amina also said that as part of its efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, the Ministry of Health will work to strengthen programs related to environmental health. Dr. Pierre Ngom, UNICEF representative in Eritrea, expressed his expectation that Eritrea will realize its 2021 Strategic Partnership Cooperation Framework ahead of time through designing a strategic and viable implementation program. The opening ceremony was highlighted by cultural and artistic programs depicting the importance of environmental sanitation and a general knowledge competition among 10 schools in the Central region.

The meeting was attended by representatives of National Athletics Federations from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Rwanda and South Sudan. Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Executive Board and President of the National Athletics Federation of Kenya, Gen. Jackson Tuwei said that the meeting makes it unique for it has been conducted at a time of peace prospect prevailing in the Horn of Africa and commended the Eritrean sports community for organizing the meeting. Ambassador Zemede Tekle, Commissioner of Culture and Sports, said that Eritrea is proud for playing significant role in the development of athletics competitions at international level and for organizing such important meeting and expressed expectation that the meeting will address the expectations of the athletics sport community in the region. The training that is being provided by Chinese experts in Dubaruwa is focused on quality seeds, traditional fertilizer, modern way of cultivation and others related to agricultural production. Agricultural experts from the six regions of the country are taking part. At the commencement of the training on 28 November, Mr. Yang Zigang, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, commending the progress of the more than a quarter of a century official relations in various sectors between Eritrea and China, said that the training that is being conducted the first of its kind in Africa attests to the good relations between the two countries. Mr. Bereke Okbaselasie, director of Seeds and Crops Development at the Ministry of Agriculture, indicated that the Government of Eritrea is giving utmost priority in the human resources development and productivity and called on the trainees to take advantage of the training and transfer the knowledge they gain to their colleagues. The trainees on their part said that the training will have significant contribution in upgrading their skill and expressed conviction that they will practically apply the knowledge they acquire.

Barentu, 10 December 2018 - Anti measles and rubella vaccination and distribution of vitamin «A» has been successfully carried out in 16 sub zones of the Gash Barka region, according to Mr. Berhane Abrha, coordinator of the campaign. Stating that in Gash Barka region around 400 thousand children were expected to be vaccinated with anti measles and anti-rubella vaccinations and that vitamin A to over 130 thousand children, Mr. Berhane indicated that so far over 370 thousand children have been vaccinated and over 120 thousand have been given with vitamin A. Noting that integration of various institutions and awareness of the society were some of the main factors of the successful implementation of the program, Mr. Berhane commended the administrations and members of the Ministry of Education and voluntary village health representatives for their effort in the success of the program. Indicating that 70% of the vaccinated children were students, Mr. Berhane further declared that the implementation of the program in contrast with the goal expected was very successful. Underlining that Anti Measles and Rubella vaccination will be regularly conducted in the future, Mr. Berhane called on the remaining children to take the vaccination in nearby health institutions. It is to be recalled that the Anti measles and Rubella vaccination and Vitamin A provision Program was conducted from 21 to 30 November nationwide.

At the meeting in which representative of the European Union, representatives of partners as well as members of the association and their families took part, Mr. Gebremeskel Fesehaye, advisor of the association, indicated that the association has been initiating various income generating projects aimed at supporting the members and that there is a project “Ensure the Livelihoods of the Visually Impaired” for 2019 to rehabilitate hundred members of association. Pointing out that praiseworthy activities have been conducted to alleviate challenges of members, Mr. Gurja Tesfaselasie, head administration of the association, said that sustainable awareness campaigns have been conducted to avoid discrimination on the visually impaired citizens and as the result a number of members have been able to pursue their formal education and graduate with various professions. Commending the support they were provided by the Government and the public, the participants called for the projects being initiated to focus on groups instead of individual beneficiaries. Speaking at the event, in which Ms. Amna Nurhussien, Minister of Health, senior Government and PFDJ officials, heads of UN institutions in Eritrea, as well as other invited guests took part, the D.G. of Public Health in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Andeberhan Tesfatsion indicated that encouraging result is being achieved owing to the coordinated effort exerted to combat the prevalence of HIV/AIDS. Dr. Andeberhan further said even though the Ministry of health is working with its partners to curb the prevalence rate of the disease still remain more challenges to combat and prevent new infections. Dr. Araia Berhane, head of Communicable Diseases Control on his part gave briefing on the causes and effects of HIV/AIDS and the situation of anti retroviral drugs in Eritrea. Commending the endeavors being exerted in combating HIV/AIDS, and underlining the difficulty of minimizing the prevalence rate of the disease to its lowest level, the representative of United National Population Fund (UNFPA) Mr. Ibrahim Sambuli called on the coordinated effort of all concerned parties to that end. Representative of WHO in Eritrea, Dr. Josephine Namboze on her part commending Eritrea’s effort in preventing the disease, expressed WHO’s readiness to support the people and Government of Eritrea in all their endeavors. Speaking to Erina, member of the ONLF Executive Committee and head of public relations of the Front, Mr. Hassan Abdulahi expressed commitment to ensure sustainable peace and development in the Somali region as well as to contribute its part in the peace process in Ethiopia. The observance was attended by senior Government and PFDJ officials, members of the diplomatic community, invited guests as well as a number of students. Speaking at the occasion, the D. G. of Social Welfare at the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, Mr. Mihreteab Feshaye said that the objective for the observance of the International Day of the Disabled through sports activities was to revive the participation of the disabled veterans in various sports activities. Indicating that effort is being exerted to enable the disabled participate in all sports activities organized in the country, Mr. Hailu Asfaha, Chairman of the Eritrean Para Olympics Committee, called on the concerned government and public organizations to strengthen participation in the effort. China Alumni Association has been established today 01 December at a ceremony held at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China. Asmara, 01 December 2018- China Alumni Association has been established today 01 December at a ceremony held at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China. The objective of the establishment of the association was to bring together all graduating Eritrean returnees from the People’s Republic of China and work hand in hand with the embassy of the PRC in Eritrea in various fields. Likewise, the association is also aimed at promoting cultural ties between the sisterly countries through organizing cultural events, developing Chinese language in Eritrea, contribute in the establishment of Eritro-Chinese Club, as well as organizing lectures, seminars and conferences on issues of common interest to the two sides. Speaking at the event, Mr. Yang Zigang, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, said that the quarter of a century old official diplomatic relations between Eritrea and China will be further cemented through the establishment of the association. The D. G of Research and Human Resources at the Ministry of Education, Mr. Petros Hailemariam on his part stressed that the establishment of the association will have significant contribution in developing the bilateral relations between the two countries and expressed expectation that the association will play due role in consolidating the relations.
