The Prime Minister of the Republic of Italy, Mr. Giuseppe Conte arrived in Asmara in the afternoon hours of today, 12 October for a one-day official visit.   Asmara, 12 October 2018- The Prime Minister of the Republic of Italy, Mr. Giuseppe Conte arrived in Asmara in the afternoon hours of today, 12 October for a one-day official visit. Upon arrival at the Asmara International Airport, Prime Minister Conte was accorded warm welcome by President Isaias Afwerki and senior government officials accompanied by Marching Band playing the national anthem of the two countries. At a meeting President Isaias Aferki and Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte held at the State House they discussed on the development of bilateral relations as well as on other regional and global developments of mutual interest to the two countries. Indicating that the revitalization of the historical relation between Eritrea and Italy makes it unique for it is happening at a time of a new dynamics in the Horn of Africa, the two leaders agreed to strengthen the bilateral cooperation between Eritrea and Italy in particular and between the Horn of African countries and Italy. In a press conference, Prime Minister Conte congratulating for the joint declaration of peace and friendship signed by Eritrea and Ethiopia on 9 July to end war and establish new era of cooperation, expressed his country’s full support and offered any assistance needed for the full implementation of the accord. Prime Minister Conte also expressed his country’s readiness to carry out its part in promoting investment, cooperation projects, education programs and technical and professional trainings as well as to advocate for the strengthening of cooperation between Eritrea and the European Union. Pointing out that Eritrea and Italy had historical relations, however, the relations could not develop as expected due to various reasons, Presidential Adviser Mr. Yemane Gebreab said that Eritrea will work beyond the Horn of Africa for the development of relations based on mutual respect and cooperation with various countries. At the meeting Mr. Osman Saleh, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Presidential Adviser Mr. Yemane Gebreab, Mr. Fesehatsion Petros, Eritrean Ambassador to Italy, Mr. Amin Hassan, Director of the Office of the Presidents were present on the Eritrean side and Mr. Stefano Moscatelli, Ambassador of Italy to Eritrea, Mr. Pietro Benassi, Ambassador and Diplomatic Adviser to the Prime Minister, Admiral Carlo Massagli, Military Adviser to the Prime Minister and Mr. Rocco Casalino, Chief Press Officer and Spokesman of the Prime Minister on the Italian side. President Isaias Afwerki also hosted state lunch in honor of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and his delegation. At the event in which government officials, heads of national associations, representative of UNICEF, members of the Diplomatic Corps as well as other invited guests took part, Ms. Tekea Tesfanicael, President of NUEW, said that ensuring the rights of women has been one of the fundamental pillars of the armed struggle and that the question of women beyond human rights is part of the national security of Eritrea. Indicating that equal participation of women does not only benefit women but also to the whole society, Ms. Tekea called for integrated effort to eradicate backward traditions and ideas that hinder the development of women. She went on to say that the International Day of the Girl is a reminder for renewing pledge to work for the all rounded development of the Eritrean women. The representative of UNICEF in Eritrea, Ms. Shaya Ibrahim on her part said that UNICEF is working in partnership with the Government of Eritrea in eradicating harmful practices and in the over all development of women. At the event, Dr. Ghidei Gebreyohannes from the College of Medicine and Science presented research paper on causes and consequences of under age marriages in Eritrea. The International Day of the Girl is being observed for second time in Eritrea and for the seventh time at international level.

At the workshop in which members of YPFDJ and Foreign Front Task Force took part, extensive briefing was provided on several issues including, general overview of mass media, nature and management of information system, benefits of comprehensible and factual information, positive and negative sides of information disseminated through social media, ethics and values of mass media, character and activities of a journalist as well as resilience in the face of negative influence of social media. Indicating that the use of information technology for fair and balanced information will have significant contribution in the development of humanity,  the Eritrean Ambassador to the Republic of South Sudan, Mr. Yohannes Teklemichael  called for appropriate use of the technology in the strengthening unity and harmony among nationals and in the national development. In related news, the PFDJ organization in Rotterdam, Holland conducted its annual congress on 6 October. Eritrean Counsel in Holland, Mr. Solomon Mehari said that the objective of the congress was to assess the implementation of the programs of the organization and thereby maintain and enhance the strengths and called on the members to reinforce organizational capacity. At the congress representatives of national associations presented messages of solidarity and an executive committee was elected for three years term. The congress concluded by adopting guidelines and recommendations.

Asmara, 10 October 2018 – Eritrean nationals residing in Minnesota, USA, contributed several hospital beds to Orotta National Refferal Hospital, report indicates. According to the administration of the Hospital, the material support includes 38 hospital beds. Speaking to Erina, head nurse of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Ms. Lemlem Tesfayesus underscoring the hospital beds that were provided to the hospital are electric-powered, expressed her belief that the hospital beds will have significant contribution in alleviating loads that staff members have had. The head nurse further thanked the nationals residing in Minnesota and called on others to follow their footsteps.

Minister Fouzia said that the mission of the Ministry of Justice is to provide open, equitable and timely service to the public as well as ensuring free and accountable judiciary system. Minister Fouzia went on to say that the Eritrean people have been for centuries governed through traditional and customary laws and that respecting and ensuring laws and regulations are the noble societal values of the people. She also reiterated on the need of experts that understand the culture of the society and the stance of the government in order to provide effective service to the society. Mr. Abraham Berhane from the Information Technology at the Ministry gave briefing on the information technology that is being introduced at the magistrates and attorney offices throughout the country.

Speaking at the occasion, the chairman of the association, Mr. Afwerki Gebrezgiabher indicated that the association is exerting effort in cooperation with partners to encourage exemplary teachers and strengthen the capacity of teachers. Mr. Belai Habtegabir, head of the Ministry of Education branch in the Central region, indicating that teacher is the cornerstone of all rounded knowledge, called for strengthening participation for the development of education in the country. In the same vein, the International Teachers Day was observed in the Northern Red Sea region featuring various programs.

The managing director of the Adi Quala sub zone, Mr. Tesfay Abraha stating that the elections were conducted on 22 administrative areas and called on the newly elected to serve the people that elected them with diligence and trust and residents to cooperate with them in their tasks. Similarly, elections conducted in Segeneyti sub zone from 4-22 September was concluded successfully. Speaking at the occasion, Mr.Yohannes Gebremeskel, managing director of the sub zone, called on the elected to serve the people they elected them with efficiency and accountability. In Adi Quala sub zone, there are 110 villages clustered in 22 administrative areas, and in Segeneyti sub zone there are 38 villages grouped in 18 administrative areas.

Indicating that the development of a country depends on the quality education being provided, Mr. Simon said that the substantial investment the Eritrean Government is making in education attests to that effect. Mr. Simon went on to say that the expansion of educational facilities has been realized and what remains is ensuring the provision of quality education and called on the concerned institutions and stakeholders to conduct integrated effort in cooperation with teachers which are the main actors. Dr. Halima Mohammed from the Ministry of Education explained on the essence and meaning of this year’s theme “Education Right with Competent Teacher” and the role of competent teachers in realizing the provision of quality education. The International Teachers Day is being observed for the 22 times at national level and for 35 times at international level.

The residents of Dubaruwa sub-zone called for conducting research and documentation of the historical sites in the sub-zone as well as exploration at the Mountain It’aber in Tera-Emni area that is believed to be the site of an ancient monastery. Indicating that the monastery that is said to exist there at around 1400 AD was destroyed and abandoned due to various enemy invasions and plagues, the residents expressed readiness to contribute their part in the exploration activity and documentation. Archeologist Temesgen Hagos and Anthropologist Gebremicael Gebreselasie from the Commission of Culture and Sports branch in the Southern region said that they are well aware of the legend and they will visit the area to conduct preparatory activity for the full scale exploration. The area called as “Mariam It’aber” is located four km east of the Tera-Emni administrative area.

During the graduation ceremony, the director of the School, Mr. Micael Jahray said that the graduates in addition to the theoretical courses they were provided worked as an intern for 7 months in various hospitals and health institutions and called on the graduates to upgrade their knowledge through work. The head of supervision at the school,Sister Alganesh Teklegergish on her part, said that the assistant nurses graduating from various institutions are significantly contributing in meeting the demand of the country and in ensuring health services of the public, called on the graduates to emulate their predecessors and serve their people with strong discipline and diligence. The D.G. of the Department of Policy, Planning, Research and Human Resources Development in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Berhane Debru stating that priority is being given to human capacity development, health professionals graduating from various institutions are playing significant role in improving health services and in developing the health system of the country. STATEMENT BY HIS EXCELLENCY MR. OSMAN SALEH MOHAMMED MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF THE STATE OF ERITREA AT THE GENERAL DEBATE OF THE 73rd SESSION OF THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY STATEMENT BY HIS EXCELLENCY MR. OSMAN SALEH MOHAMMED MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF THE STATE OF ERITREA AT THE GENERAL DEBATE OF THE 73rd SESSION OF THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY NEW YORK 29 SEPTEMBER 2018 Madam President, Honourable Heads of Delegation, Ladies and Gentlemen, Let me join previous speakers to convey our congratulations for your election as President of the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly. This forum provides, annually, a congenial platform for the Member States to broach critical issues of international peace and security and their ramifications on national and human development. In this spirit, allow me to bring to the attention of this august assembly key matters of paramount importance to my country and our region as a whole. As you are all aware, Eritrea a d Ethiopia have recently signed a historic Peace Agreement that brings to an end the dark, two-decades-old, a chapter of war, constant tension, and strife. This historic achievement - even if belated by almost 16 years - will allow both countries to funnel their resources, potential and positive energy solely towards much-needed development. It has already infused hope and optimism on the peoples of both countries. Its positive dividend for regional peace and security is too palpable to merit emphasis. This is indeed attested by new frameworks of all-rounded cooperation that have been set in motion in the past two months or that are on the offing at the regional level. Eritrea wishes to express its gratitude to various countries that contributed in different ways, and that have demonstrated their political goodwill, to the success of the historical process underway. Madam President, Distinguished Delegates, Let me now revert to a perplexing injustice that has afflicted my country for almost a decade. I am referring to the unwarranted sanctions that were imposed on Eritrea in December 2009 and 2011 respectively. With positive winds of peace flowing in our region, several UNSC member States are these days calling for the immediate lifting of the deplorable sanctions. The diplomatic discourse is not however fully coherent. As it happens, some countries are looking for procedural and other pretexts and preconditions. The apparent aim is to move the goalpost and maintain the illegal sanctions on Eritrea. As an aggrieved party, which has stood for nine long years on the receiving end of the miscarriage of justice, Eritrea cannot and will not plead for clemency or magnanimity. The people and government of Eritrea will continue to stand up for their rights until justice is ascertained and wrongs meted to them are redressed. Madam President, Distinguished Delegates, The transgressions perpetrated against Eritrea are, in many ways, symptomatic of the hubris and perverse power games that have primarily governed international relations in our contemporary times. The spiralling crises, instability, wars, and conflicts that have, and continue to rage, in various parts of the world are inevitable consequences of the absence of justice; the attendant outcomes of international power imbalance. When the rule of law is suppressed and supplanted by the logic of force; when global power balance is compromised, the inevitable outcomes are intractable crises and escalating wars. It is against this disconcerting global backdrop that Eritrea was first victimized and targeted for unlawful and unfair sanctions on 23 December 2009. I will not bore you with details of the incontrovertible facts; of how and why this act was imposed; as all relevant information - including confidential communications, (Wikileaks and all) - have since long been available in the public domain. However, to sum up, the interplay of forces and factors that brought about the sanctions were the following: 1. The principal architects of the sanctions were previous US Administrations who felt that they could use their unassailable power, and raw coercion, to ram through the UNSC, punitive measures against a small country and people to advance their misguided regional agenda. It is worth remembering here that certain officials in the US Administration had mulled imposing similar sanctions on Eritrea in 1999-2000, at the height of the border war with Ethiopia, in order to impose asymmetric arrangements through coercive means. The fabricated charges peddled in 2009 were, in fact, suitable improvisations to implement a prevalent agenda. 2. The second cause for the imposition of the sanctions was the inability of the UN system to prevent such wrongs from happening as well as systemic flaws/political horse-trading in the operations of the UN Security Council. Here again, one must remember that the UNSC had failed to take any meaningful action against Ethiopia. This was despite the fact that previous Ethiopian regimes had flagrantly violated the UN Charter and the Algiers Peace Agreement guaranteed by the same UNSC when they refused to abide by the final and binding decisions of April 13, 2002 of the Eritrea- Ethiopia Boundary Commission, (the EEBC). 3. The third factor in the imposition of the sanctions was the existence of governments that served the agenda of major powers. In the case of the sanctions on Eritrea, the principal architects resorted to regional Trojan Horses to imbue an African face to their resolutions. Madam President, Distinguished Delegates, The sanctions imposed on Eritrea for the last nine years have entailed considerable economic damage to the country and unnecessary hardships on its people. The related campaigns of smear and defamation have inculcated immeasurable damage to the reputation of the country and to the prospects and potential of investment. Perhaps, the biggest damage was the regional instability and insecurity that this state of affairs bred and exacerbated. The actual cost incurred and the opportunities forfeited - both at the national and regional levels - are thus huge. In the event and in light of the widely acclaimed peace and cooperation that has broken in the region, certain countries to choose to ignore the stark truth and to prolong the sanctions regime in Eritrea is astounding. In the past six decades, the Eritrean people have waged long and difficult struggles to advance the cause of justice and to foster a climate that is conducive for mutual security and stability in the region. These robust convictions and legacy ha e indeed enabled them to withstand all the wrongs and scars inculcated by the unfair sanctions. Through characteristic resilience and hard toil, they have now vanquished the injustices perpetrated on them. As I stressed earlier, the people of Eritrea have not committed a crime or transgression that impels them to seek clemency. As such, they are not only calling for the immediate rescinding of the sanctions but they are also asking, and deserve, amends for the damages incurred and opportunities forfeited. I thank you!

The coordinator of the program, Mr. Mebrahtom Mezgebe said that the vaccination program that was conducted from 16 centers has witnessed commendable coordination from the area administrators and livestock owners. Mr. Mebrahtom also called on the livestock owners to collect animal fodder that could pass them through the summer and ensure the health of their livestock. The head of the Ministry of Agriculture branch in the sub-zone, Mr. Solomon Meles indicated that the livestock in the sub-zone are prone to cross border diseases and called for timely report in case of observing the occurrence of symptoms.

The Ministerial Cabinet held extensive discussion on the scope and implication of the encouraging new political developments in the region following by the historic joint declaration of Friendship and Peace reached by Eritrea and Ethiopia as well as the broad influence of the prevailing comprehensive regional strategic partnership. The Ministerial Cabinet also discussed on the programs of port rehabilitation and expansion, road infrastructure, energy, industrial set up and associated matters. Blueprints of the programs, including funding of the projects are being worked and scheduled to be finalized in three months time. The Cabinet of Ministers reiterated the five pillars that govern the regional partnership including respect of each other’s sovereignty, articulated framework of common interests, rejection of harmful extraneous agendas, conducive regional climate as well as sectors of synergy. Regarding the existing internal situation and challenges encountered, President Isaias underlined on the need of integrated effort to confront any internal or external attempt to reverse the new developments emerging in the region. Indicating that Eritrea has emerged victorious in the face of the past challenges, President Isaias said that the new era requires integrated effort for the benefit of the country and people. At the ceremony conducted at Bahti Meskerem Square in which religious leaders, senior Government and PFDJ officials, members of the Diplomatic Corps as well as thousands of the faithful took part, the Secretary of the Holy Synod of the Eritrean Tewahdo Orthodox Church, Abune Lucas headed prayers followed by religious hymns around the Damera torch. Speaking at the ceremony, Abune Lucas stated that this year's Meskel Holiday has unique meaning as it is being celebrated at a time in which peace and friendship accord has been reached by Eritrea and Ethiopia. Memhir Simon Beyene on his part gave briefing on the historical background of the Meskel Holiday. Memhir Beyene went on to say that the prevailing peace prospect was the result of the heavy sacrifice our martyrs paid and called for its preservation. Following the prayers, Abuna Lukas, Secretary of the Holy Synod, and the Governor of the Central region, Maj. Gen. Romodan Aweliai jointly lit the «Damera» torch. Sunday school youths presented religious songs depicting the occasion.

Seminar on raising the awareness of the public on the cause and consequence and means of controlling the prevalence of malaria was held in Foro sub-zone. Massawa, 26 September 2018- Seminar on raising the awareness of the public on the cause and consequence and means of controlling the prevalence of malaria was held in Foro sub-zone. The three days seminar was focused on symptom and consequence of malaria, proper use of impregnated bed nets, as well as treatment of the disease. Ms. Rahel Kiros, head of the Foro health center, said that the objective of the seminar was to enhance the understanding of the village health representatives on the cause and consequence of malaria and increase their participation in the effort to prevent the prevalence of the disease. Ms. Rahel also called on the public to clear malaria breeding areas, conduct sustainable environmental sanitation activities and proper use of mosquito bed nets and to take patients early to health facilities. Document indicates that there are 40 village health representatives at the 15 administrative areas of the Foro sub-zone.

International Youth Day was observed on 25 September here in Asmara under the theme “Safe Spaces for Youth”. The observance was organized in cooperation with the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students (NUEYS) and the UN office in Eritrea. Representing the UN office in Eritrea, Mr. Ibrahim Sambuli, UNFPA Representative in Eritrea, called on all stakeholders and partners to play due part in creating conducive atmosphere for the youth so that they contribute their part in the political, economic,  social and cultural activities. The event was highlighted by cultural and artistic programs. The International Youth Day is being observed for the third time at national level and for the 19th time at international level.  

Potable water project worth 1.2 million Nakfa has been put in place in Zawul, Dubaruwa sub-zone. Mendefera, 25 September 2018- Potable water project worth 1.2 million Nakfa has been put in place in Zawul, Dubaruwa sub-zone. The project included 43 meters of water wells, 3 km water pipe line, 4 water distribution centers as well as putting in place generators and water pumps. Indicating that the project was implemented in cooperation with the Zawul residents and Adi-Halo government units, the coordinators of the project said that the project is expected to alleviate the water shortage problem in the area. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the administrator of the sub-zone, Mr. Frewengiel Teklehaimanot congratulating the residents that have been expecting for long for the realization of the project, called for proper water management for the sustainability of the project. The residents on their part expressed appreciation for those who participated in the project and expressed readiness to keep its sustainability.

The Commission of Culture and Sports in cooperation with the Ministry of Health branch in the Central region organized a seminar for youth engaged in cultural and sports activities focusing on prevention of communicable diseases in general and that of HIV/AIDS in particular. Asmara, 22 September 2018- The Commission of Culture and Sports in cooperation with the Ministry of Health branch in the Central region organized a seminar for youth engaged in cultural and sports activities focusing on prevention of communicable diseases in general and that of HIV/AIDS in particular. At the seminar that was conducted on 18 September, briefings accompanied by statistical information and video shows were provided on the current situation of communicable diseases and the efforts being exerted at national level to control their prevalence. The coordinator of communicable diseases prevention at the Ministry of Health branch in the region, Mr. Mehari Woldemicael indicated that owing to the rigorous efforts exerted to raise the awareness of the public the prevalence of communicable diseases has significantly been reduced and that strong effort is being made to reduce their occurrence by 90% in accordance with the global goal 2030. Mr. Mehari also called on the youth to increase awareness on the causes and consequences of communicable diseases and strengthen participation in the effort to prevent them.

Four months certificate training on Information Technology was provided to 22 staff members of the Ministry of Information. Asmara, 21 September 2018- Four months certificate training on Information Technology was provided to 22 staff members of the Ministry of Information. The training was organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Information and ‘Nekuh Demena’ institution and included networking, information technology and its importance and server administration. At the graduation ceremony in which heads of the ministry took part, the technical advisor of the ‘Nekuh Demena’, Engineer Teklehaimanot Yemane said that the training will have significant contribution in upgrading the capacity of the staff members of the ministry that have already been working in the area of information technology. The director of the Human Resources Development in the Ministry of Information, Mr. Sebhatu Kifle on his part said that the training that was provided with internal capacity will have significant contribution in the day to day activities of the ministry and congratulated the trainees for the interest they demonstrated during the training. It is to be recalled that the Ministry of Information in cooperation with the Embassy of the Peoples Republic of China has provided training for 45 members of the ministry on digital television and radio dissemination. 

The National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) branch in the Netherlands conducted its congress on 15 September in Rotterdam. Asmara, 21 September 2018- The National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) branch in the Netherlands conducted its congress on 15 September in Rotterdam. The congress was attended by the Eritrean Ambassador to the European Union, Mr. Negassi Kassa, the Eritrean Consul in the Netherlands, Mr. Solomon Mehari as well as the Chairperson of the of the NUEW Europe region, Ms. Negisti Tsegai and representatives of various national associations. Indicating that the congress is being conducted at a time of promising peace prospect and cooperation in the region, Ambassador Negassi called on the union to strive for increasing the awareness of its members and strengthen participation in the national development drives. Ms. Negisti on her part said that the congress will be important forum for assessing strengths and challenges and thereby strive for increasing the organizational capacity of the union. The participants conducted extensive discussion of the reports presented and elected an executive committee for three years term.

Eritrea has attended at the Horn of Africa Women Forum conducted on 16 September in Vienna, Austria. Asmara, 20 September 2018- Eritrea has attended at the Horn of Africa Women Forum conducted on 16 September in Vienna, Austria. The Forum focusing on Women’s Empowerment and Development was organized by the Austrian ‘Universal Peace Federation (UPF)’, in cooperation with the Permanent Mission of Eritrea to the United Nations in Vienna and Horn of Africa Peace Initiative. The Forum was attended by members of the Diplomatic Corps, investors, and representatives of the UN organs as well as invited guests from Eritrea, Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Egypt and Austria. At the forum experiences of women in Eritrea, Ethiopia and Sudan were presented and the participants conducted extensive discussion on the issues raised.

President Isaias Afwerki yesterday, 19 September met and held extensive talks with Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of UAE, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahiyan.   Asmara, 20 September 2018 - President Isaias Afwerki yesterday, 19 September met and held extensive talks with Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of UAE, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahiyan. During a meeting conducted in Abu Dhabi Royal Palace “Al Shatie”, President Isaias and Sheik Mohammed discussed on investment, economic cooperation and regional issues of concern to the two countries. President Isaias expressed appreciation for the contribution of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahiyan in ensuring peace and stability in the region. Sheik Mohammed on his part expressed appreciation for the Jeddah Peace Accord signed in Jeddah by President Isaias Afwerki and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on 16 September hosted by King Salman bin Abdulaziz. Sheik Mohammed went on to say that the peace accord will have significant contribution in strengthening peace and stability of both countries and the region and expressed the full support of the UAE. President Isaias also met and held talks on similar issues with Deputy Prime Minister of UAE, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed and other high ranking officials. President Isaias Afwerki is on a 3-day working visit to Abu Dhabi.

The National Association of the Eritrean War Disabled Veterans has received material support from its branch in Stuttgart, Germany. Asmara, 19 September 2018 – The National Association of the Eritrean War Disabled Veterans has received material support from its branch in Stuttgart, Germany. The support that the Association received today in its storehouse in Merhano include medical beds and mattresses, wheelchairs with spare parts, crutches, medical equipments, special medical chairs, wood work materials, eye glasses, specialized sports equipments as well as stationeries. Stating that primary needs of the disabled are materials that help them in their daily social and personal activities, the Chairman of the Association Mr. Gebrebrhan Iyasu said that similar contributions made by various institutions have had encouraging results and thanked the branch association in Stuttgart. Report from the chairwoman of the branch in Stuttgart indicates that the branch, which was established in 1999, has been engaged in contributing material support to the war disabled veterans.

The two parties have agreed to work together peacefully to promote and protect the interest of the people of the Somali region and collaborate on national issues including the future of the horn of Africa integration. The substantive talks will be finalized soon. Both parties thank the Eritrea government and people for hosting the meeting.              

At a meeting held on 17 September in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, President Isaias Afwerki and President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti agreed to establish a new chapter of cooperation and good neighborliness. The two leaders also expressed gratitude for King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz for the important contribution they made. At a press conference held after the meeting, the Saudi Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir congratulated the two countries. The Eritrean Foreign Minister, Mr. Osman Saleh and his Djiboutian counterpart, Mr. Mohammed Ali Youssouf indicated that the two countries have established a new era of friendship and cooperation and thanked the contribution of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The leaders of Ethiopia and Somalia have immensely contributed in restoring the relation between Eritrea and Djibouti. It is to be recalled that a joint committee comprising the Foreign Ministers of Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia met President Ismail Omar Guelleh in Djibouti on 6 September.

Article Two The two countries will promote comprehensive cooperation in the political, security, defense, economic, trade, investment, cultural and social fields on the basis of complementarity and synergy. Article Three The two countries will develop Joint Investment Projects, including the establishment of Joint Special Economic Zones. Article Four The two countries will implement the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission decision. Article Five The two countries will promote regional and global peace, security and cooperation. Article Six The two countries will combat terrorism as well as trafficking in people, arms and drugs in accordance with international covenants and conventions. Article Seven The two countries will establish a High-Level Joint Committee, as well as Sub-committees as required, to guide and oversee the implementation of this Agreement. This Agreement is made at Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on this day of September 16, 2018 in two original copies in Amharic, Tigrinya, Arabic and English languages; in case of discrepancy in interpretation, the English version shall prevail. The UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that “The signature of the peace agreement between the President of Eritrea and the Prime Minister of Ethiopia is indeed a historic event.” Asmara, 17 September 2017 – The UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that “The signature of the peace agreement between the President of Eritrea and the Prime Minister of Ethiopia is indeed a historic event.” The UNSG made the comment yesterday, 16 September at a press conference following the signing in Jeddah, with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir. The UN chief expressed his deep appreciation for the courageous peace accord President Issaias and PM Abiy Ahmed signed ending a conflict that has lasted for decades. He also said that the initiative has a very important meaning in a world where we see, unfortunately, so many conflicts multiplying, and lasting forever. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir on his part commending the two leaders for their courageous decision, said that the accord, signed in Jeddah “is a historic milestone for the peoples of Ethiopia and Eritrea, and will contribute in the strengthening security and stability in the region at large”.
