SINGAPORE — Young people in Singapore who want a listening ear but are reluctant to step into a counsellor’s office can turn to a new initiative.Called Chat Circles, the programme matches them with a trained volunteer to have an hour-long conversation about things weighing on their minds.Social enterprise Empact, which launched the initiative on Aug 26, promises a space “free from clinical assessments, unsolicited advice or expectations”.Up to 20 young people can join each session, which will run monthly from August through to July 2027. Empact plans to work with tertiary institutions to hold sessions on campus, as well as other community partners such as charities serving underprivileged youth.Chat Circles is part of a new series of mental well-being and resilience programmes aimed at supporting youth through life transitions, under the five-year SG Youth Plan launched by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and the National Youth Council (NYC).

Singapore services sector grew 25.5% in Q2 2026, recorded $1.58 trillion in turnover

Services sector turnover in the second quarter of 2026 rose 25.5 per cent from a year earlier, data from the Singapore Department of Statistics (SingStat) showed.Compared to the previous quarter, non-seasonally adjusted business receipts grew by 16.9 per cent, the department reported on Thursday (Aug 27).The data, which excludes accommodation, finance and insurance and real estate developers, showed that receipts in the second quarter stood at about $1.58 trillion.The quarterly indicator released by SingStat tracks the income earned by firms across Singapore's services sector.It is intended to provide insights on the short-term performances of the services industries, helping to guide business decisions and policy choices, SingStat said.Business receipts stood at about $283 billion, if wholesale trade, which reported a 27.8 per cent growth — mainly attributed to wholesale trade of electronic components, petroleum, and petroleum products — is excluded.With the exception of recreation and personal services and food and beverage, all other industries recorded year-on-year growth in the second quarter.

SINGAPORE — When senior citizen Goh Kim Inn hit his father’s head with an umbrella while crossing a road, Jimmy Yar Hock Long, 37, turned around and shoved the 78-year-old assailant to the ground.Goh hit his head on the ground and died two days later at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.On Aug 27, Yar was sentenced to nine months’ jail after he pleaded guilty to an assault charge.His 70-year-old father and Goh had a history of altercations over reasons that were not disclosed in court documents.Goh had previously assaulted Yar’s father in January and March 2024, which saw Goh receiving police warnings on Aug 20 that year.Yar’s father was also issued a warning for fighting with Goh in a public place on March 21, 2024.The fatal incident happened just before 9am on May 25, 2025.Yar and his father were at a pedestrian crossing at the junction of Upper Serangoon Road and Wolskel Road when Goh approached them from behind and used an umbrella to hit Yar’s father on the head.Deputy Public Prosecutor Timotheus Koh said that Yar then rushed towards Goh and pushed him. Goh fell, hit his head on the ground and stopped moving.
