Islamic association says former NMP Calvin Cheng's comments on pro-Palestine activists 'dehumanising, dismissive'

The Singapore Islamic Scholars and Religious Teachers Association (Pergas) has criticised former Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP) Calvin Cheng's comments about activists from a pro-Palestine group. In a Facebook post on Sunday (April 6), Pergas expressed «deep consternation» over the 49-year-old's «inflammatory suggestions» directed at members of the Muslim community in Singapore. «His remarks, particularly the insinuation that certain individuals be sent to Gaza and not allowed to return, are deeply troubling and risk undermining the hard-earned social cohesion that defines our multiracial, multireligious society,» said the organisation. On March 13, Cheng wrote about a group known as the Monday of Palestine Solidarity, whose members were accused of disrupting Meet-The-People Sessions held by the People's Action Party.

Man, 63, drove through a playground and into a swimming pool after drinking alcohol

After consuming alcohol at a corporate dinner in a country club, a man decided to drive home but found himself lost in the compound. Leaving behind a trail of destruction in an 8-minute drive captured on closed circuit television (CCTV) footage, he ended up driving his car into a swimming pool. On April 7, William Teng Guan How, 63, pleaded guilty to one drink driving charge and one for performing a rash act endangering human life. He will be sentenced on April 9. Deputy Public Prosecutor Darren Ang said that on Aug 27, 2024, Teng had spent the day at Seletar Country Club for a golf event, followed by a corporate dinner at about 7.45pm. Teng admitted that he drank two shots of whiskey at the dinner before deciding to drive home around 9.30pm. The court heard he had taken a wrong turn within the country club's compound, driving through a playground before coming to the pool area. The pool was closed to visitors at the time. Footage played in court showed how Teng had driven his vehicle into the club's pool, and then reversed the car out of it before finally driving the front half of his car into the pool again.

Govt's response to US tariffs 'partly to instil fear': PSP chairman Tan Cheng Bock

The impact of the US tariffs has been overstated, according to Progress Singapore Party (PSP) chairman Dr Tan Cheng Bock, who disagreed with recent assessments made by several ministers.  US President Donald Trump unveiled sweeping new tariffs on trading partners on April 2, including a 10 per cent baseline tariff on almost every country — including Singapore.  Several ministers, including Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, have since weighed in on the issue.  In a video posted on Friday (April 4), PM Wong warned Singaporeans that the «likelihood of a full-blown global trade war is growing» as a result of the tariffs, adding that «the road ahead will be harder».

Briefing - Greece's National Recovery and Resilience Plan: Latest state of play - 07-04-2025

Greece was among the first four EU Member States to submit its national recovery and resilience plan (NRRP) in April 2021. Since then, Greece has modified its plan in December 2023, adding a REPowerEU chapter and expanding its loan programme, and in July and December 2024, introducing smaller targeted revisions. The Greek plan now envisages investment and reforms worth €35.9 billion, to be implemented up to 2026; €18.2 billion will be financed from non-repayable financial support (grants), while the loans amount to €17.7 billion. The plan corresponds to 4.8 % of the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), and represents 19.6 % of Greece's gross domestic product (GDP) in 2019 (the RRF being 5.2 % of EU-27 GDP in 2019). This is the fifth largest national allocation and the highest amount as a share of national GDP across the EU. The five-pillar Greek plan addresses the country's specific challenges, and also contributes to EU priorities such as the green transition and digital transformation, allocating 38.2 % and 21.6 % to the respective targets. Greece has so far received €18.2 billion (50.7 % of its total allocation) in the form of pre-financing (€4 billion), and four payments each for grants and loans. Another five disbursements for grants and loans (with the next one expected in spring 2025) are envisaged up to 2026 on fulfilment of the agreed milestones and targets, of which Greece has achieved 27 %. The European Parliament, which supported an EU recovery instrument from the start of the pandemic, is involved through a regular, structured dialogue with the European Commission and the Council, and is competent to scrutinise RRF implementation. This briefing is one in a series covering all EU Member States. Third edition. The authors would like to thank Amalia Fumagalli, trainee in the Next Generation EU Monitoring Service, for her research assistance. The 'NGEU delivery' briefings are updated at key stages throughout the lifecycle of the plans. Source : © European Union, 2025 - EP
