A medium intensity earthquake of 4.5 magnitude hit near Rohtak in Haryana on Friday, tremors of which were felt in the national capital, the National Centre for Seismology said. According to the NCS, the quake occurred at a depth of 5 km at 9.08 pm. There were no immediate reports of any loss of life or property.
Air India said it will operate additional repatriation flights to six countries between June 4 and June 6 to bring back stranded Indians under the phase 2 of Vande Bharat Mission. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the six countries where these flights will operate are the US, New Zealand, the UK, Sweden, Germany and South Korea. The Vande Bharat Mission started on May 7.
A total of 102 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Uttarakhand on Friday, taking the total number of cases to 602 in the state, the State Control Room COVID-19 said.
The total number of cases reported so far are 7,284, including 4,244 who have been treated and discharged while there are 2,842 active cases. The death toll in the state has reached 198.
The Ahmedabad Medical Association (AMA) had approached the high court against a Gujarat government order, which prohibits private doctors and hospitals from conducting COVID-19 tests without getting approval from designated health officials.
Former Chhattisgarh chief minister Ajit Jogi passed away on Friday at the age of 74. Ajit Jogi was admitted to a hospital in Raipur on May 9 after he suffered a cardiac and respiratory arrest. A bureaucrat-turned politician, Jogi had served as the first chief minister of Chhattisgarh (2000-03) in then Congress government after the state was carved out of Madhya Pradesh.
The Supreme Court will hear on June 2 a plea which has sought a direction to the Centre to amend the Constitution and replace the word India with 'Bharat' or 'Hindustan', claiming it will «instill a sense of pride in our own nationality.»
