Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday met with the Governor to recommend a 10-day parole for Jagtar Singh Hawara on humanitarian grounds, citing the deteriorating health of the prisoner's mother.
Around 86,800 people are still affected by the floods in Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Sivasagar. Golaghat remains the worst-hit district, with more than 42,000 people affected. Nagaon has around 20,000 affected residents, while Sivasagar has about 15,000. The situation has nevertheless improved compared with Tuesday, when nearly 1.13 lakh people were affected across the four districts. Authorities are continuing relief operations in the affected areas.

The Enforcement Directorate has apprehended Ramgopal Agarwal, the former treasurer of the Congress party in Chhattisgarh, as part of an investigation into a staggering Rs 3,000 crore liquor scam. Allegations state that cash proceeds were funneled directly to Agarwal during his tenure. Following his arrest, he has been placed in ED custody for a week. The scam allegedly involved a network managing illicit commissions and sales.
Union minister Kiren Rijiju said India was not a «banana republic» and that there should be rules and regulations to spend foreign funds. The proposed legislation, aimed to manage the gap in the regulation of foregin fundings to NGOs and curb the proselytisation, was fiercely criticised the opposition that termed the bill «anti minority».
