Seychelles' Mahe-Praslin windsurfing race set for Aug. 26

The popular Mahe-Praslin windsurfing race in Seychelles is set for Monday, August 26, and will feature 30 competitors eager to brave the waves between the Seychelles' two largest islands. Alain Alcindor, the chairman of the organising committee, said, «We had originally scheduled it for this Saturday, but predictions show that they will now be enough wind on that day and so, we have moved it to Monday, where it is set to be more favourable for such as race.» For this year, there are three categories instead of two and aside from windsurfing, there will also be kitesurfing and windfoiling.  Wind foiling is a new form of windsurfing, in which the windsurfing board floats about 50 cm above the water instead of over the water. The race is expected to begin at 11 a.m. and participants will be hoping to beat the 22-year-old record of 51 minutes 62 seconds set by Stephen Stravens in 2002. Stravens will be one of the competitors for this year's event, and he could be the one to break his record. The last time the race was held was in 2022 and the winner was Jean-Marc Gardette who won the 44km race in 1 hour, 5 minutes and 19 seconds. Jacquelin Languilla finished second, and Jules Kandasamy, who was 13 years old then, was third. This year's race will again see participants from Mauritius competing in the event, after which they will also be able to compete in the Praslin Slalom. The Praslin Slalom will take place at Grand Anse Praslin in the area where the Mahe to Praslin race will end. It will take place for three days, from Wednesday to Friday, and on Saturday the prize giving and closing ceremony will take place. As always, safety remains a priority for the event, with various partners aiding the Seychelles Yachting Association (SYA) in ensuring that everything runs smoothly and that the event is again a success. Cable and Wireless Seychelles is sponsoring the SIM cards that will used in the Grade Point Average bracelets, which will give the location of each athlete. The event began in 1982 when a group of six windsurfers, which included Patrick Lablache, Gerard Lafortune, Evans Calva, Bernard Sanders, Jimmy Mein and Marc Magnan, decided to attempt the crossing. Since then, it has been a major highlight of local surfing, with many surfers taking on the challenge.

SINGAPORE - A South Korean man in Singapore is said to have received the benefits of criminal conduct totalling more than $1.5 billion from his home country and Japan between 2014 and 2017. Kim Taek Hoon, 63, allegedly used the money to buy nearly 28,000 gold bars, each weighing 1kg. He is also accused of cheating the Singapore Customs and three logistics companies here during the period. He allegedly declared that shipments to South Korea and Japan through the logistics companies contained only air-powered tools. In reality, the shipments are said to have contained more than 23,000 gold bars. Kim, who appeared in a district court on Aug 23, faces more than 20 charges for offences that include cheating and money laundering. Police said in a statement that officers arrested him in December 2023 after the Commercial Affairs Department received information about the case. Investigations revealed that between 2014 and 2017, Kim allegedly smuggled cash from South Korea and Japan, with the money concealed in shipments of tools.

Caught on camera: Man vapes openly in MRT cabin

A man was filmed openly vaping in an MRT train travelling along the North-South Line. In a TikTok video uploaded on Aug 9, the man can be seen holding a neon green vapouriser in his right hand, exhaling plumes of smoke as he leans against the train doors. The video caption also stated that the man had «popped some pills». He can be seen looking around the train cabin in a daze, blinking slowly before putting his vape away. As the train pulls into the station, the doors open, almost causing the man to tumble, but he manages to steady himself. 'Stoned and high' Netizens expressed shock at the man's behaviour, with one describing the man's actions as «daring». Others hoped that the authorities would take action against him. «Look at him, stoned and high… Hope the authorities will catch up with him as soon as possible,» a TikTok user said. Another commented that more train wardens should be deployed to maintain order on trains. «Yes, the bell is for emergency, but should be allowed for this kind of cases,» said a netizen. «To send a signal that we do not condone such acts!»

Meet the unsung heroes cleaning up Singapore's oil spill for over 2 months

SINGAPORE - Twelve hours a day, seven days a week, for the past two months. This is how hard Mr Ramdzan Salim and hundreds of others have worked to wash, scrub and scoop the oil from Singapore's waters and beaches after the Republic's worst oil spill in a decade. Mr Ramdzan, a site supervisor with salvage company Resolve Marine, got up at dawn every day to lead his team in cleaning fish farm sea cages between Lazarus and St John's Islands, as well as on Kusu Island. The 52-year-old used to stay up till midnight after returning home from work. But for the past two months, Mr Ramdzan was physically worn out and did not enjoy any free time, falling asleep after the day's work by 9pm. As a result, he did not talk to his sons face to face during this entire period. He is among the many involved in the extensive oil spill clean-up operations that kicked in after 400 tonnes of oil leaked into Singapore's waters when a dredging boat hit a stationary bunker vessel on June 14.
