SINGAPORE - A South Korean man in Singapore is said to have received the benefits of criminal conduct totalling more than $1.5 billion from his home country and Japan between 2014 and 2017. Kim Taek Hoon, 63, allegedly used the money to buy nearly 28,000 gold bars, each weighing 1kg. He is also accused of cheating the Singapore Customs and three logistics companies here during the period. He allegedly declared that shipments to South Korea and Japan through the logistics companies contained only air-powered tools. In reality, the shipments are said to have contained more than 23,000 gold bars. Kim, who appeared in a district court on Aug 23, faces more than 20 charges for offences that include cheating and money laundering. Police said in a statement that officers arrested him in December 2023 after the Commercial Affairs Department received information about the case. Investigations revealed that between 2014 and 2017, Kim allegedly smuggled cash from South Korea and Japan, with the money concealed in shipments of tools.

Caught on camera: Man vapes openly in MRT cabin

A man was filmed openly vaping in an MRT train travelling along the North-South Line. In a TikTok video uploaded on Aug 9, the man can be seen holding a neon green vapouriser in his right hand, exhaling plumes of smoke as he leans against the train doors. The video caption also stated that the man had «popped some pills». He can be seen looking around the train cabin in a daze, blinking slowly before putting his vape away. As the train pulls into the station, the doors open, almost causing the man to tumble, but he manages to steady himself. 'Stoned and high' Netizens expressed shock at the man's behaviour, with one describing the man's actions as «daring». Others hoped that the authorities would take action against him. «Look at him, stoned and high… Hope the authorities will catch up with him as soon as possible,» a TikTok user said. Another commented that more train wardens should be deployed to maintain order on trains. «Yes, the bell is for emergency, but should be allowed for this kind of cases,» said a netizen. «To send a signal that we do not condone such acts!»

Meet the unsung heroes cleaning up Singapore's oil spill for over 2 months

SINGAPORE - Twelve hours a day, seven days a week, for the past two months. This is how hard Mr Ramdzan Salim and hundreds of others have worked to wash, scrub and scoop the oil from Singapore's waters and beaches after the Republic's worst oil spill in a decade. Mr Ramdzan, a site supervisor with salvage company Resolve Marine, got up at dawn every day to lead his team in cleaning fish farm sea cages between Lazarus and St John's Islands, as well as on Kusu Island. The 52-year-old used to stay up till midnight after returning home from work. But for the past two months, Mr Ramdzan was physically worn out and did not enjoy any free time, falling asleep after the day's work by 9pm. As a result, he did not talk to his sons face to face during this entire period. He is among the many involved in the extensive oil spill clean-up operations that kicked in after 400 tonnes of oil leaked into Singapore's waters when a dredging boat hit a stationary bunker vessel on June 14.

One man's adventure in getting his VEP tag in Johor

JOHOR BAHRU – I should have guessed that picking up my Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) tag in Johor Bahru would be an adventure. The demand for VEPs surged after May 28 when Malaysia announced that all foreign-registered vehicles entering the country by land from Singapore must use the VEP from Oct 1. The news led to a surge of applications. From May 28 to June 29, a total of 23,649 VEP applications were received. In comparison, there were 15,424 applications for the whole of 2023. Singapore drivers have flocked to the newly opened VEP information centre in Woodlands to seek help with their applications. The office has been overwhelmed since it opened on Aug 19, even though there was no prior announcement of its existence. After several attempts to apply online (vep.jpj.gov.my) for the VEP in recent months, I was finally able to clear the necessary steps in early August, and then make my appointment to collect the VEP.
