SINGAPORE - All 76 owners of units at the Automobile Megamart (AML) in Ubi have until May 15 to pay $68 million to renew the site's lease until 2040, The Straits Times has learnt. If they do not do so, they will have to vacate the premises by July 18.Located in the Ubi industrial area near Paya Lebar Air Base, the eight-storey complex is the largest dedicated used-car centre in Singapore, housing 121 showrooms and offices. The occupants are mostly car dealerships for new and used cars, as well as related businesses such as vehicle leasing and financing.The 30-year lease for the land that AML sits on was awarded to a group of car dealers in 1996. The building was officially opened in 2000.If the lease renewal is successful, the occupants can remain until the end of 2040.The May 15 deadline was a final four-week extension given by the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) after earlier rounds of extensions.At several junctures of the renewal process, the owners were unable to come to a unanimous agreement, leading to the lease renewal offer lapsing once before SLA revised it and issued a second offer.

SINGAPORE - Since 2024, an army of seniors have been going around their neighbourhoods performing simple tasks such as packing and delivering food to other seniors who live alone, distributing groceries to low-income families and restocking community fridges.More than 1,400 seniors have signed up to join Neighbourhood Kakis since it was piloted in neighbourhoods under 10 grassroots constituency offices. Three persons were arrested on Friday (April 3) for voluntarily causing hurt and committing robbery following a 1 1/2-hour stand-off with the police at a Jurong HDB flat.The incident, involving two men, aged 21, and a 24-year-old woman, happened at about 10.10pm at a residential unit at Block 262 Jurong East Street 24.Responding to media queries, the police said they were conducting follow-up investigations into a case of voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery at the said location.The trio refused to open the door and instead locked themselves inside the flat.Residents told Shin Min Daily News that they saw significant police presence from various units. Four people were taken to hospital after a fire broke out in a condominium unit at The Rivervale on Saturday (April 4).In a Facebook post on the same day, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to a fire at 3 Rivervale Link, where the condominium estate is located, at about 2.10pm.When SCDF arrived at the scene, black smoke was observed to be emitting from a third-floor unit. Firefighters extinguished the fire, which happened in the bedroom, using a water jet.About 50 people were evacuated from the block, while four people had evacuated from the unit before SCDF arrived.The latter were assessed for smoke inhalation and taken to Singapore General Hospital.SCDF said preliminary findings show the cause of fire was likely from an electrical origin in the bedroom.In their post, it also reminded people to prevent fire by following these tips:

Two people were injured after a tow truck overturned on Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) on Friday (April 3).In a video uploaded on Sgfollowsall Instagram on April 4, a truck towing a heavy vehicle was seen turned on its side on the grass at the side of the road. Skid marks were also observed on the road.In respond to queries from AsiaOne, the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to the accident along BKE towards Woodlands Checkpoint before Mandai Road exit on April 3 at about 6pm.SCDF assessed two people for minor injuries and they declined to be sent to hospital.Police said they believed the tow truck to have self-skidded along BKE towards Woodlands slip road into Mandai Road.Police investigations are ongoing.
