Smashed eggs, broken cookie jars: Bukit Timah condo residents go ape as monkeys ransack homes

Residents of Pine Grove condominium in Bukit Timah have been dealing with unwelcome visits by uninvited visitors. Stomp contributor Sook Hui shared with Stomp that monkeys have been entering apartments and leaving a trail of destruction. «Pine Grove is under attack by monkeys again,» she said. «For the unfortunate residents who suffer visits from monkeys (sometimes more than 20), their entire home will be in a mess with smashed eggs, overturned or broken cookie jars and bowls and remnants of half-eaten fruits strewn everywhere.» She shared a video with Stomp of around 10 monkeys from her window, with some of them entering and exiting her neighbours' units. Some of them appeared to be nibbling on fruit. Considering the situation, the Stomp contributor shared that most residents do their best to keep their doors and windows closed at all times, or install narrow grilles to keep the primates out. «However, this is not always possible,» Sook Hui said. «The Singapore weather is getting hotter by the day and not all units can afford to install full-house air-conditioning nor redo all their grilles.»

'1 more inch and it would've been me': Van driver recalls brush with death, mourns colleague killed in Tampines crash

It was a typical Monday morning for Chia Tong Chai, 64, who was driving to work with two colleagues in their company van. But the trio, who work at First Choice Pest Specialist in Tampines, never made it to their workplace after a speeding car caused a multi-vehicle collision at the junction of Tampines Avenue 1 and Avenue 4. His colleague, Norzihan Juwahib, 57, was killed in the accident. A 17-year-old Temasek Junior College student also died. Speaking to Shin Min Daily News at his home on Friday morning, Chia, whose right arm was in a sling, recounted the accident on Monday (April 22). His mind went blank for a moment after the collision, he said. He had hurt his right arm, but disregarding the intense pain, he quickly got out of the van and checked on his colleagues. Norzihan, who was in the rear seat, was unconscious, he said. The other passenger, a man, who was in the front passenger seat, was hurt but conscious. Norzihan later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

Briefing - 'Sahelexit' in West Africa: Implications for ECOWAS and the EU - 26-04-2024

At the end of January 2024, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger announced their withdrawal (referred to as 'Sahelexit' by several media outlets) from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). This withdrawal – with immediate effect according to the departing states, within a one-year deadline according to the ECOWAS Treaty – presents a complex set of challenges for the region. ECOWAS, initially designed to promote regional economic integration, has over the years adopted protocols to uphold democracy and good governance. On several occasions it has adopted sanctions against unconstitutional changes of government in its member states, like those that recently occurred in Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso and Niger. However, these actions have had mixed results, with negative effects on most ECOWAS member states, hindering economic cooperation and increasing trade costs, thereby complicating regional integration efforts and increasing humanitarian crises. The three states presented their withdrawal as a reaction to sanctions. Despite the lifting of sanctions, the three states are still considering bringing their new Alliance of Sahelian States (AES) out of ECOWAS. The withdrawal will probably not mitigate the negative effects of the sanctions; it also risks weakening existing security mechanisms and international cooperation, already made fragile by the forced departure of UN and Western forces from these states, while Russian private military companies appear to be taking over in the three AES countries. The impact on the EU is manifold. The rising influence of Russia and other players, coupled with the increasingly negative perception of France in its former colonies, is already challenging the EU's clout in the region. EU security and migration strategies throughout West Africa depend significantly on the leverage of ECOWAS over its member states. As this leverage is reduced by the withdrawal of three of them, this could potentially escalate security risks and further destabilise neighbouring regions. Migration flows might become less controlled, potentially increasing irregular migration to Europe. Source : © European Union, 2024 - EP
