US scientist congratulates Seychelles for protecting 30 pct of marine area 10 years early

The fact that Seychelles has designated 30 percent of its marine areas as protected long before its 2030 deadline is an example that other nations should follow, an American marine biologist said Tuesday. «Now there is this global movement to say we have to protect at least 30 percent of the ocean, where many are saying by 2030. It is 10 years away but here in Seychelles you are already there. That is real leadership, and other nations should listen up,» Sylvia Earle told reporters after paying a courtesy call on President Danny Faure. Through its Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) initiative, Seychelles has dedicated 30 percent of its ocean territory to protection. The initiative is aimed at supporting the island nation's sustainable and long-term use and health of the waters throughout its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and territorial sea. The plan led by the government with public participation is an integrated, multi-sector approach to address climate change adaptation, marine protection and support the Blue Economy roadmap and other national strategies. Earle, who is also an explorer, author and lecturer, added that she is inspired by the meetings that she had with Faure. The filming in Seychelles will form part of the end sequence of the film which will celebrate countries and people already taking huge steps in the right direction. (State House) Photo License: CC-BY   «If we fail to take care of the ocean there is no economy, there is no life. That is fundamental to looking at what the blue economy means. It is not just about how we take more from the ocean. It is how we respect what the ocean gives to us and finding a place for ourselves within the natural systems,» she said. Earle is in Seychelles, a group of 115 islands in the western Indian Ocean, filming part of a BBC programme which focuses on the current state of the ocean and the latest global research investigating what can be done to protect it. State House said, «The filming in the Seychelles will form part of the end sequence of the film which will celebrate countries and people already taking huge steps in the right direction.» Faure took part in the filming when the crew was at Anse Takamaka beach on Praslin, last Saturday. During filming Faure explained how Seychelles was able to achieve 30 percent ocean protection 10 years ahead of global targets. He also outlined the phases that the project went through. The BBC programme in partnership with Rolex is about the current state of the ocean and the latest global research investigating what can be done to protect it. The filming in the Seychelles will form part of the end sequence of the film which will celebrate countries and people already taking huge steps in the right direction.

Seychelles' National Assembly Speaker resigns leadership post in opposition party, cites 'administrative decision'

The Speaker of the Seychelles' National Assembly, Nicholas Prea, resigned as the secretary general of the Seychelles National Party (SNP) on Monday with immediate effect but will remain an ordinary member. According to a press communique from the secretariat of the National Assembly on Tuesday, Prea wrote to the leader of SNP, Wavel Ramkalawan, and the Electoral Commission which he had to do as an office-bearer. «My decision is purely administrative and I remain an ordinary member of the Seychelles National Party (SNP), a Party that I have always believed in its principle and ideology,» Prea said in the communique. He added that as SNP is part of the alliance of the Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS), «I am thus still a member of LDS and also remain the LDS elected MNA for the district of Bel Ombre.» An MNA refers to a Member of the National Assembly.   «I wish to thank Prea for his contribution over many years to the work of the SNP. I express this on behalf of other officials of the Party and of our members,» Ramkalawan told a press conference on Tuesday. The leader of the SNP -- Wavel Ramkalawan. (Seychelles News Agency) Photo License: CC-BY   The Seychelles National Party was formed in 1994, one year after the return of multiparty democracy in 1993 in the island nation with a population of 95,000. The leader of the SNP said that this development does not in any way affect Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS), the opposition collation in the National Assembly. Prea was sworn in as the fourth speaker of the National Assembly in March 2018 after the resignation of Patrick Pillay, who assumed the post after the legislative elections in September 2016 in January of the same year. The LDS coalition which is made up of SNP, Lalyans Seselwa, the Seychelles Party for Social Justice and Democracy and the Seychelles United Party, came to together to contest the National Assembly elections of 2016. LDS won for the first time the majority of seats in the National Assembly -- 19 out of the 33 -- putting Seychelles, an archipelago in the western Indian Ocean, in a position of cohabitation. The resignation of Prea comes during a presidential election year. Elections for the President of Seychelles will be held in the last part of 2020; no date has yet been set. According to the Electoral Commission, there are presently 12 political parties registered in Seychelles, a group of 115 islands in the western Indian Ocean. Only two parties have so far made known their intentions to take part in the presidential election. The United Seychelles Party endorsed its candidate, the incumbent president Danny Faure and the main opposition bloc -- Linyon Demokratik Seselwa – announced Wavel Ramkalawan as its candidate.
