Bangladeshi worker dies after being struck by reversing truck at HDB worksite in Yishun

A 29-year-old Bangladeshi worker died on Friday (May 23) after he was hit by a reversing tipper truck at a worksite in Yishun. The worker was carrying out survey works at a Housing and Development Board (HDB) project site at 71 Lorong Chencharu when the accident occurred. Responding to AsiaOne's queries, the police said that they were alerted to the incident at about 10am on Friday and the man was pronounced dead at the scene by a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) paramedic. A 61-year-old man was arrested for causing death by rash act and investigations are ongoing, they added. HDB told AsiaOne that it is saddened by the worker's death and extends its heartfelt condolences to his family. HDB added that it would work with the project's contractor - a joint venture between Yeng Tong Construction and Koh Kock Leong Enterprise - to render all the support and assistance needed to his family. The worker was an employee of Koh Kock Leong Construction. HDB said that all works on site have been suspended until further notice.

ICA to conduct safety review after Woodlands Checkpoint accident

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said on Saturday (May 24) that it will be conducting a review of safety measures following an accident at Woodlands Checkpoint earlier in the morning. The accident occurred at about 5.28am when a departing Singapore-registered car collided with an arriving Malaysia-registered bus along the Causeway. ICA said that preliminary investigations found that the contraflow operation was activated before barriers were put in place, which was not in accordance with safety procedures. «This accident should not have happened. ICA is treating it very seriously, and we are assisting the traffic police who are investigating the accident,» it added. After the accident, ICA officers immediately rendered help and managed the traffic situation and alerted the Singapore Civil Defence Force and police. The police told AsiaOne that the car driver, a 48-year-old man, and his three passengers aged between 14 and 78 were taken to hospital. Investigations are ongoing. ICA said that there were no reported injuries among the bus passengers, while the bus driver declined medical assistance.

RDU aims to form 'shadow government' to take party forward

Opposition party Red Dot United (RDU) on May 24 said it wants to move beyond being a check and balance on the ruling PAP, and is aspiring towards being an “alternative government” instead. To do this, it wants to work with other “like-minded” opposition parties to build a digital platform, tentatively called altgov.sg, to flesh out policy positions. “We want to make ourselves better known, so if the PAP fails, people will know there is a shadow government in place to take the country forward,” RDU secretary-general Ravi Philemon said. He was speaking at an event at the party’s headquarters in Ubi Crescent to thank volunteers after the 2025 General Election. “I think that is the responsible thing to do. We do not want to be checks and balances any more,” said Mr Philemon as he addressed the media while flanked by his RDU teammates Sharon Lin, Ben Puah and Harish Mohanadas. RDU in its media invitation to the May 24 event said that there is a necessity to change its outlook and how it approaches politics in Singapore.

Spotlight on billionaires and tycoons who chose Singapore to set up their foundations for charity work

SINGAPORE - Some of the richest people in the world, such as American hedge fund billionaire Ray Dalio, Indonesian coal king Low Tuck Kwong and Brazil-born Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, have set up foundations in Singapore to give to charitable causes in the past three years. This comes as the Republic positions itself as a financial and philanthropic hub for Asia, driven by a flourishing wealth management sector and attractive tax incentives. On May 5, it was announced that the Gates Foundation, one of the world's largest philanthropic foundations, will set up an office in Singapore. Founded in 2000 by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his former wife Melinda, the foundation aims to fight poverty, disease and inequity around the world. Gates, an American who turns 70 in October, is ranked 13th on Forbes' World's Billionaires List 2025, with an estimated wealth of US$108 billion (S$139 billion).  The Commissioner of Charities (COC) told The Straits Times that about five new charities each year have been registered under the Grantmaker Scheme in the past three years.
