Georgia applied for EU membership in March 2022 and received candidate status on 14 December 2023, under certain conditions. Since then, the severe democratic backsliding brought about by the ruling Georgian Dream party has resulted in the de facto halt of Georgia's EU accession process. Additionally, the country is currently embroiled in a political crisis following the contested October 2024 parliamentary elections. Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) adopted its report on the 2023 and 2024 enlargement Commission reports on Georgia on 4 June 2025.
