Pakistan to continue import of LNG from Qatar

A Pakistani cabinet minister says Islamabad will continue to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar under a 15-year agreement, despite the severing of diplomatic ties with Qatar by Saudi Arabia and some other countries.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the federal minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources, said Qatar and Pakistan last year signed a $1 billion agreement, under which Qatar's Liquefied Gas Company Limited will sell LNG from 2016 to year 2031 to state-run Pakistan State Oil.

He said since no sanctions have been imposed on Qatar by the United Nations, Pakistan and Qatar were bound to abide by the agreement.

Qatar has released an initial report into the alleged hack of its state-run news agency, an incident which helped spark a diplomatic crisis between the energy-rich country and Arab nations.

The Qatari Interior Ministry said late Wednesday that the website of the Qatar News Agency was initially hacked in April with "high techniques and innovative methods."

It said hackers installed a file and then published a fake news item attributed to Qatar's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, just after midnight May 24.

The ministry did not say who it suspected carried out the attack. It also thanked the FBI and the British National Commission for Combating Crime for assisting it in its investigation.

The alleged fake news item, which had Sheikh Tamim making controversial comments on Iran and Israel, immediately was picked up by Saudi and Emirati media, laying the groundwork for the crisis that began Monday (05.06.2017.)

Kuwait's emir has traveled to Qatar and met that country's leader as part of his efforts to mediate an end to a crisis that's seen Arab nations cut ties to the energy-rich country and attempt to isolate it.

Kuwait's Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah was met planeside by Qatar's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, when he arrived on Wednesday night.

The two held talks, though details of their discussions were not released. Sheikh Sabah earlier Wednesday traveled to Dubai where he met with Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who also serves as prime minister and vice president of the UAE.

Sheikh Sabah also has traveled to Saudi Arabia in his efforts.

UNDP funds wetlands rehabilitation at Seychelles' popular cultural heritage site

The wetlands area at Domaine Val de Pres in the eastern Mahe district of Au Cap will be transformed into an educational living laboratory and viewpoint as of April 2025. This will be done by the Seychelles National Heritage Resource Council (SNHRC), which received a $50,000 grant from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to continue rehabilitating the wetlands area found on the property. Domaine Val des Pres is one of the three heritage sites managed by the SNHRC and one of the most visited cultural sites. It comprises an authentic traditional Creole homestead, the Pomme Cannelle restaurant, and several kiosks selling arts and crafts. The 12-month-long project was revealed to the local media on Wednesday morning, during a site visit by the project consultant from the UNDP and SNHRC representatives. «We want to rehabilitate the marsh found on the property so that the community and the tourists who visit here can have a space to observe and understand our natural heritage,» said SNHRC's executive director, Benjamine Rose. As part of the rehabilitation, new types of mangroves and fauna that can adapt to the area will be introduced to Domaine Val de Pres. Additionally, visitors will also have the use of a long boardwalk with rails starting inside the Domaine De Val Des Pres area, with a small bridge leading to a small bird-watching viewpoint. There will also be large display boards showing information of all the species found in that area. SNHRC is also including Au Cap Primary School's Environment Club, Tourism Club and Heritage Club members in the project, who will benefit from an exploratory learning experience. The project's consultant, Errol Renaud, revealed that work on the site began two years ago, bringing together the Au Cap community, Maison Marengo restaurant, which is nearby, and SNHRC for an eco-tourism project. To kick start the rehabilitation project, an expert will carry out a  biodiversity assessment to determine the wetland's health, the amount of pollution it has and what species are found there. This will be used to guide the developers on their next step. Renaud explained that all precautions were being taken to ensure «minimal disruption to the ecosystem when building the boardwalk to the biodiversity area which will also double as a bird-watching area.» He said, «We have involved the Department of Environment and that of Planning since the pre-planning phases.» Renaud said they are working with the District's Administration office to find someone to care for the marsh where it starts on the neighbouring housing estate to create a sense of ownership. Meanwhile, UNDP representative, Lindy Bastienne, said the organisation was interested in funding the wetlands renovation as «it helped diversify the types of projects that we fund. Since we had already started some work on the marsh with the community, we welcomed the fact that SNHRC wanted to expand on it.»

'An opportunity to bond': Sec 3 students finally catch NE show after missing out due to Covid-19 restrictions

When Pearl Pegram found out that she wouldn't be able to attend the National Day Parade (NDP) National Education (NE) show as a Primary 5 student back in 2020, she was disappointed. «I was let down because that was one of the things I was looking forward to during the school year,» the Secondary 3 student from North Vista Secondary School said. This year, the 15-year-old girl as well as those who missed out on the NE shows during the Covid-19 pandemic finally got the chance to catch the performances. At the second NE show on Saturday (July 6), Pegram sat at the Padang with her friends, soaking in the atmosphere. Speaking to AsiaOne before the show started, Pegram said that she was looking forward to spending time with her friends at the NE Show despite the heat that day. «It's like a make-up for the time I couldn't watch the show,» she added. Although she was there with her friends, she wouldn't mind watching the show with her family, either. «[The show] gives us an opportunity to bond with our family and celebrate Singapore's birthday.»

$5.10 for 'three and a half slices': Koufu apologises to customer over portion of fish soup

$5.10 might seem a reasonable price for a bowl of fish soup these days, but what if that portion comes with less than four slices of fish? That was the situation encountered by one disgruntled customer. In a Facebook post on Complaint Singapore, user Yong Tow Hu described how he'd ordered a meal at the Koufu food court located within Singapore General Hospital on Thursday (July 4). He shared that he'd ordered a small bowl priced at $5.10 instead of the $7.50 option as he'd never patronised the stall before. He was then allegedly met with a reply from an unhappy-looking stall assistant that «for $5.10, there are very few slices of fish». The customer then retorted: «So be it, I want to see just how few there are!'» In his post, Yong stated that he later took photos of the «three and a half slices of fish» in his bowl. Seeing this, the stall assistant allegedly rushed over to remind him of how she'd warned him beforehand about the portion size.
