Jamaica is battling ageing infrastructure – a side effect of being among the earliest Caribbean nations to begin large-scale development – compounded by decades of maintenance neglect, according to Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness. Speaking at Sabina Park, whose restoration was identified as one of this year’s two flagship National Labour Day projects, Holness said the Government will, in the coming years, have to embark on a massive infrastructural renewal drive targeting public infrastructure, including waterways, sewage systems, and other amenities.

A Labour Day project by the Portmore Municipal Corporation to continue construction of sidewalks along Municipal Boulevard and extending to Braeton Parkway was hampered on Monday by a shortage of cement. Portmore Mayor Leon Thomas, who has been spearheading the project that began three years ago, said the rapid development taking place along Braeton Parkway has made the sidewalk expansion a priority. However, he explained that the municipality was unable to complete more extensive work on Monday because of the difficulties sourcing cement.

Six of the seven persons arrested for their alleged involvement in fraudulently registering SIM cards were brought back to the crime scenes at Aljunied and Geylang Roads on Tuesday (May 26) morning.The police had earlier arrested seven individuals, comprising a Singaporean and six Malaysians, aged between 19 and 49, during an island-wide enforcement operation between May 21 and 22.The operation targeted errant retailers who were allegedly engaged in the registration of postpaid SIM cards that were subsequently used by overseas syndicates in crime.Yeo Kian Tuck, 49, a Singaporean, and six Malaysians comprising of ⁠Dennis Chuah Sze Chun, 28, ⁠Brandon Chin You Yin, 19, ⁠Boon Yik Hui, 31, ⁠Lai Tak Shen, 29, ⁠Swee Meng Yi, 26 and Fan Weng Kin, 24 were arrested after they allegedly used the information of actual customers to register for additional postpaid SIM cards.These cards were then supplied to other people, and the mobile lines were subsequently used in impersonation scams.

From Jan 1, 2027, the names of two Catholic girls' schools in Toa Payoh will revert to their original names from 1854.The move was announced in a joint statement by the principals of CHIJ Primary (Toa Payoh) Judina Cheong and CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) Genevieve Chye on Tuesday (May 26).This will allow the two schools, as the mother schools of the CHIJ family of schools, to «return to their historical identity and heritage», they explained.Following the reinstatement, which has been approved by the Ministry of Education, CHIJ Primary (Toa Payoh) will be named «Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (Primary)» and «Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (Secondary)» respectively.The name change will not affect the schools' mission, the principals said. «As the oldest girls’ Catholic schools in Singapore, we have nurtured generations of young women who are anchored on the CHIJ values of truth, justice, freedom and love. »We remain committed to our mission to develop IJ girls who live out our school motto, 'Simple in Virtue, Steadfast in Duty'."
