Amazon Rolling Out 'Amazon Pay' Digital Wallet In Physical Stores

As it tries to build a foothold in payments outside of its Amazon Go stores, the company is reportedly focusing on building partnerships with restaurants and gas stations (businesses that have yet to be scalped by the Bezos revenue-absorption machine). To entice owners to give Amazon Pay a try, the company is dangling what appears to be a pretty enticing carrot: Amazon is promising to lower processing costs at a time when so-called «interchange» fees charged by Visa and MasterCard have been rising.

«The Outlook For The Global Economy Has Deteriorated»: Oil, Copper And Lumber Are All Telling Us The Next Economic Downturn Is Here

Oil, copper and lumber are all telling us the exact same thing, and it isn’t good news for the global economy.  When economic activity is booming, demand for commodities such as oil, copper and lumber goes up and that generally causes prices to rise.  But when economic activity is slowing down, demand for such commodities falls and that generally causes prices to decline.  In recent weeks, we have witnessed a decline in commodity prices unlike anything that we have witnessed in years, and many are concerned that this is a very clear indication that hard times are ahead for the global economy.

Interpol Defies Russia, Elects South Korean As President

It appears that an aggressive lobbying campaign by the US and the UK has succeeded in stopping a qualified Russian candidate from winning the presidency of Interpol. One day after four US senators, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and the home office of the UK expressed outrage at the notion that Interpol Vice President Alexander Prokopchuk, a general in the Russian Interior Ministry, had emerged as the front-runner to become the international police agency's next president. Both the US and UK urged Interpol members to vote instead for Kim Jong Yang, who assumed the role of acting president after the last president, Meng Hongwei, disappeared in China following rumors of a corruption prosecution, according to the Financial Times.

Online climate meet offers talkfest without the gas

World leaders will participate in an innovative climate change summit on Thursday that will take place entirely online so it is carbon neutral. The eco-friendly event stands in stark contrast to many other international political summits, which involve thousands of delegates jetting across the world to a venue where they stay in air-conditioned comfort. The Virtual Climate Summit is the brainchild of Marshall Islands President Hilda Heine, whose low-lying Pacific island nation will drown beneath rising seas if global warming continues unabated. Heine said the event -- with participants including French President Emmanuel Macron, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau -- will be the first global political meeting to be held online. It will consist of a rolling, 24-hour livestream that will begin in the Marshalls' capital Majuro, then include addresses from leaders and panel discussions before delivering a declaration. ...

UNDP mission arrives in Kyrgyzstan to assess needs of the country's electoral system

Bishkek, Nov. 21, 2018. /Kabar/. Leaders of the Kyrgyzstan and Onuguu-Progress factions of the Jogorku Kenesh (Kyrgyz Parliament) Almazbek Baatyrbekov and Bakyt Torobayev met with the UNDP mission for assessment of electoral needs. Head of the mission Pascal Roussi told that the mission began work on Monday, November 19th. Meetings are held to develop recommendations, on the basis of which decisions will be taken on the need for assistance for the electoral system of Kyrgyzstan. Almazbek Baatyrbekov told that every year the parliament of the republic recieves budget with a deficit, therefore, technical support from international organizations for the parliamentary elections scheduled for 2020 is needed. “In the past parliamentary elections in 2015, administrative resources and the bribery of voters were used. This was possible due to the ignorance of voters of the electoral legislation. Therefore, I support President Jeenbekov’s proposal to stop making amendments to the Election Code one year before the elections,” Baatyrbekov said. He also believes that persons with convictions should not be engaged in elected bodies and that gender representation should be respected throughout the work of an elected body. Bakyt Torobaev told that the party has a number of proposals to amend the election laws. “The main thing is that the deputies of all levels should be not those who have a thick wallet, but those who really are highly regarded on site,” Torobaev said. Therefore, the party proposes to draw up lists of candidates and approve them at party congresses, but after the elections to have the opportunity to hold a party congress again and change the order of lists depending on the votes cast in the regions. “We also propose to provide TV time to all parties participating in elections, regardless of their financial capabilities, and to cancel the holding of concerts at electoral meetings with voters,” Torobaev continued. The members of the Onuguu - Progress faction Tynchtyk Shainazarov, Altynbek Junus uulu, Ziyadin Jamaldinov, who participated in the meeting, noted that there is progress in holding elections. “Wholesale” voting has been terminated, one voter receives one ballot. Voting through biometric data gives hope to voters that their votes will be counted. But the voter should be protected from the arbitrary will of local leaders and cancel form 2, which allows the voter to cast the ballot not at the place of residence, but at another polling station.
