Asmara, 18 July 2019 - Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Dr. Abiy Ahmed, arrived in Asmara in mid-morning hours today, 18 July for a two-day working visit. President Isaias Afwerki accorded warm welcome to Prime Minister Dr. Abiy and his delegation on their arrival at Asmara International Airport. At the welcoming ceremony, Presidential Advisor Mr. Yemane Gebreab and Ambassador of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Mr. Redwan Hussien were presented. President Isaias Afwerki and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met at State House in the afternoon hours of today and discussed on the further enhancement of the all-rounded cooperation between the two countries as well as regional and other matters of mutual interest. Accompanied by President Isaias, Prime Minister Abiy and his entourage visited several development projects and construction work on the Nefasit-Decamhare highway. The Ethiopian delegation includes Minister of Finance Mr. Ahmed Shide, Director of the Office of the Prime Minister Mr. Shumete Gizaw, and CEO of the Ethiopian Airlines, Mr. Tewelde Gebremariam.

Pledge to strengthen contribution in nation building process

At a seminar conducted on 13 July in Tel Aviv, Eritrean nationals in Israel pledged to strengthen organizational capacity and contribution in the nation building process. Asmara, 17 July 2019- At a seminar conducted on 13 July in Tel Aviv, Eritrean nationals in Israel pledged to strengthen organizational capacity and contribution in the nation building process. Pointing out that the Eritrean people have repeated the resilience and commitment they demonstrated during the armed struggle for independence in safeguarding the national sovereignty, Mr. Solomon Kinfe, Charge d’Affairs at the Eritrean Embassy, expressed confidence that they will preserve the noble Eritrean values and strengthen contribution in the new era of peace and cooperation. Indicating that the illegal and unjust sanctions that was imposed against Eritrea has been foiled through the strong organization and resilience of the Eritrean people, Mr. Solomon said that it is every citizen’s responsibility to make up the lost opportunity in the past 10 years. Mr. Solomon also gave extensive briefing on the progress of the peace and cooperation agreement signed between Eritrea and Ethiopia and the opportunities it has created in the region. The participants expressed resolve to strengthen contribution in the success of the national development drives.

Celebration of 25th anniversary of National Service Program

The Silver Jubilee of the beginning of Eritrea’s National Service Program will be celebrated in Sawa from 1-4 August, under the theme “Sawa: The perfect choice for sustainability!”, the Commander of Military training Centers, Col. Ezra Woldegebriel, stated. Asmara, 17 July 2019 -  The Silver Jubilee of the beginning of Eritrea’s National Service Program will be celebrated in Sawa from 1-4 August, under the theme “Sawa: The perfect choice for sustainability!”, the Commander of Military training Centers, Col. Ezra Woldegebriel, stated. Speaking to Erina, Col. Ezra noted that the decision to begin national service attests to the far sighted strategic vision of the Government of Eritrea, and the theme clearly reflects the bold decision. Stating that preparations to celebrate the 25th Silver Jubilee with great enthusiasm has been underway Col. Ezra said that the event will feature cultural and artistic performances, calisthenics, carnival shows, military parades, traditional and modern military uniforms, paintings, sports competitions among others. Col. Ezra further indicated that all regional administrations and government bodies will also host various activities highlighting the anniversary. Over 10 thousand people are expected to participate at the celebrations.

Assab, 16 July 2019- Members of the national service that are assigned to various institutions in the port city of Assab have conducted tour to Duhtum trenches in connection with the Silver Jubilee of the establishment of Sawa National Service Training Center. The objective of the tour was to understand the heroic feat demonstrated by members of the national service in foiling the TPLF aggression in the area and renew their pledges to martyrs who paid their dear lives in safeguarding the national sovereignty. According to report, 90% of the Eritrean Defense Forces stationed in the area were members of the national service. The tour participants were provided briefing about the heroic feat the Eritrean Defense Forces demonstrated in that difficult and unbearable climate and open terrain by members of the national service that were stationed there. In the same vein, the Silver Jubilee of the establishment of Sawa National Service Training Center is being celebrated at regional level in the Southern Red Sea region from 18 to 21 July. The Asmara Music School has graduated 16 students on 14 July. The students were provided three years theoretical and practical training in various music instruments. Speaking at the event, Mr. Elias Woldegebriel, director of the school, indicated that the school is graduating students in its 19th commencement and the trainees were provided theoretical and practical training in music theory, music arrangement, sound appreciation, musical note writing as well as eight music instruments. Mr. Kifleyesus Asfha from the Technical and Vocational Education at the Ministry of Education gave briefing on the background of the Music School and expressed appreciation for the teachers and staff of the school for their relentless effort to produce professional musicians in the country. The Eritrean Institute of Technology (EIT) has graduated yesterday, 13th July 1166 students with masters, first degrees as well as diplomas. Asmara, 14 July 2019 – The Eritrean Institute of Technology (EIT) has graduated yesterday, 13th July 1166 students with masters, first degrees as well as diplomas. According to report, the Eritrean Institute of Technology (EIT) conferred Master’s degree to 4 students, first degree to 583 and diploma to 579 students. The graduates include 548 students from the college of Education, 369 from College of Engineering and Technology, and 245 students from College of Science. In related news, at its 12th commencement, the Massawa based College of Marine Sciences and Technology has graduated on 13 July, 131 students, 88 with first degree and 43 with diploma. At the graduation ceremony in which ministers, the Executive Director of the National Commission of Higher Education and Research Institute, Dr. Haile Mihtsun took part, Prof. Gebrai Asgedom, Dean of the College, indicating that the expansion of colleges throughout the country attests to the huge investment the Government is making in the Education sector in the past 28 years, indicated that all graduates from the colleges are exerting commendable contribution in the  national development endeavors. Prof. Gebray went on to say that thanks to the organizational restructuring made in 2018 in the higher education institutions, the three fields of study that were under the auspices of the Eritrean Institute of Technology have become autonomous institutions. Mr. Abraha Asfaha, Minister of Public Works on his part stating that the graduates have been equipped with the appropriate skill, profession and knowledge called on them to practically upgrade their skill on the ground and contribute in the national development program. Commending for the educational opportunity they were provided, the representative of the graduates expressed readiness to live up to the expectations of the people and Government. At the graduation event, outstanding graduates were honored with medals.

The three day festival that has been celebrated under the theme “Resilience for Higher Progress” was attended by a number of nationals from various cities of Germany and other European countries as well as friends of Eritrea. The guests of honor, Mr. Osman Saleh, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Mr. Hagos Gebrehiwet, head of PFDJ Economic Affairs conducted seminar on the objective situation in the homeland and the region as well as economic situation and future prospect. Indicating that in the past 20 years the Eritrean people have emerged victorious against all external conspiracies aimed at derailing the country’s economic progress, Foreign Minister Osman Saleh called on the citizens to strengthen organizational capacity and contribution in the national development programs. Minister Osman also gave briefing on the huge investment being made in transportation infrastructure as well as on the effort being exerted to finalize the legal procedures for opening the Eritrea-Ethiopia crossing borders. Mr. Hagos on his part said that priority is being provided to the agricultural sector with a view to ensure food security as well as export. Mr. Hagos went on to say that priority will be given to nationals in the export oriented agricultural investment.

Asmara, 13 July 2019 – Annual Festival of Eritreans in Germany opened yesterday, 12 July graced by the presence of Mr. Osman Saleh, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Mr. Hagos Gebrehiwet, Head of PFDJ Economic Affairs. At the festival which is being celebrated with great enthusiasm in Giessen city under the theme “Resilience for Higher Progress”, a number of nationals from various cities of Germany and other European countries as well as friends of Eritrea are participating. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Hadish Goitom, Chairman of Holydays Coordinating Committee in Germany stated that this year’s festival is unique and expressed appreciation to all those who organized the event. Noting that this year’s national festival is being celebrated at a time in which the first anniversary of the peace agreement reached between Eritrea and Ethiopia is being celebrated, Mr. Kahsai Tewelde, Head of Public and Community Affairs at the Embassy of Eritrea in Germany said that the festival highlights the steadfast resilience the people and Government of Eritrea demonstrated in the last twenty years. A workshop aimed at nurturing competent youth was organized in Halhal sub-zone, Anseba region.   Keren, 12 July 2019- A workshop aimed at nurturing competent youth was organized in Halhal sub-zone, Anseba region. At the workshop in which area administrators, representatives of national organizations, teachers, religious leaders and village elders took part extensive discussion was conducted focusing on effort that should be exerted to boost productivity of youth, teaching and learning process and causes of students school dropout, as well as contribution of the youth and youth workers in the society and country. The participants also called on strengthening contribution on the part of parents, government and PFDJ institutions in the effort being exerted to nurture competent youth. Commending the contribution of the residents of the sub-zone in the effort to develop teaching-learning process and in alleviate shortcomings, Mr. Ghirmatsion Abraha, administrator of the sub-zone, expressed readiness to stand alongside the community and stakeholders in all their endeavors. The participants also adopted various recommendations including for strengthening effort to finalize villages regrouping program, address the deficiency of social service provision, as well as to design youth centered development programs.

The Conference that convened today, 10 July was officially opened by the United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Antonio Guterres. The objective of the conference is to develop the understanding of African countries on the threat and consequence of terrorism that the continent has been facing, to share experiences as well as to strengthen partnership among African countries and the United Nations and its organs in countering terrorism and violent extremism. According to report similar conference will also be conducted in 2020 at the UN level.

The festival that was officially opened by Mr. Negassi Kassa, Eritrean Ambassador to the European Union and attended by a number of nationals from various cities in the Netherlands and European countries was highlighted by educational and entertainment programs. Indicating that the annual festival is a forum in which the Eritrean nationals consolidate their unity and their attachment with their homeland, Mr. Michael Tesfamariam, Chairman of the Holydays Coordinating Committee, called on the nationals to strengthen participation. Commending the strong resilience the Eritrean community demonstrated in the past 20 years, the Eritrean Consul in Holland, Mr. Solomon Mehari called on the nationals to strengthen participation in the national development endeavors. Presidential Adviser Mr. Yemane Gebreab today, 8 July met and held talks with leaders of the Transitional Military Council and leading members of Sudan’s Forces for Freedom and Change. Asmara, 8 July 2019- Presidential Adviser Mr. Yemane Gebreab today, 8 July met and held talks with leaders of the Transitional Military Council and leading members of Sudan’s Forces for Freedom and Change. Mr. Yemane met and held talks with the Chairman of the Transitional Military Council, Let. Gen. Abdul-Fattah Al-Burhan as well as with the Deputy Chairman of the TMC focusing on the development of economic, social and security relations between Eritrea and the Sudan. Mr. Yemane Gebreab also held talks with the leading members of the Forces for Freedom and Change of the Sudan. The two sides discussed on the opportunities and challenges on the transitional period and agreed to build strong cooperation on the basis of long standing solidarity between the two peoples.

Activity assessment meeting of NUEW

The Executive Board of the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) conducted six months activity assessment meeting on 6 and 7 July.   Asmara, 8 July 2019- The Executive Board of the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) conducted six months activity assessment meeting on 6 and 7 July. The meeting was attended by representatives of the union from the six regions. The Executive Board held extensive discussion on the reports presented by the branches of the union in the regions and adopted recommendations and resolutions including on significance of strengthening organizational capacity, developing vocational and political capacity of women, contribution of women in the economic sector, ensuring health service provision among others. Ms. Tekea Tesfamicael, President of the National Union of Eritrean Women called on members in general and members of the executive committee in particular to strengthen participation in the effort being exerted to empower women. Indicating that vision of the NUEW is to ensure gender equality of women, Ms. Tekea said that that requires conscious and diligent participation. Awareness raising campaign on blood donation Barentu, 8 July 2019- Awareness raising campaign on the importance of blood donation has been conducted in Tesenei. The Chairman of Voluntary Blood Donors Association brand in Tesenei sub-zone, Mr. Gebremeskel Embaye said that the awareness raising program has increased the understanding of the public on the importance of voluntary blood donation in saving lives. Mr. Gebremeskel also said that the objective of the awareness campaign was to strengthen effort for matching the supply and demand of blood in the health facilities. G. of Social Service in the Gash Barka region, called on the society to strengthen contribution taking into consideration that blood donation has no side-effect beyond saving lives. The administrator of the Tesenai sub-zone, Mr. Seyum Gebreyesus on his part said that voluntary blood donation requires increased awareness of the public and called for sustainable awareness raising programs. Speaking at the event, the Ambassador of the Peoples Republic of China, Mr. Yang Zigang said that in the past six years the influence of the Belt and Road Initiative has been growing fast with greater participation from all sides and achieving commendable results. The National Confederation of Eritrean Workers Training Center that is located in Massawa has graduated 223 workers. Massawa, 06 July 2019- The National Confederation of Eritrean Workers Training Center that is located in Massawa has graduated 223 workers. The six months theoretical and practical training included electricity, electronics, computer technology, wood work as well as steel work and cooling system. The Director of the Training Center, Eng. Arefaine Beyn said that effort has been exerted to equip the training center with basic training facilities and expand the fields of study as well as assigning qualified teachers with firs and second degree level. Indicating that workers equipped with various skills will have significant contribution in developing their productivity, Mr. Measho Gebretensae, head of Technical and Vocational Education Quality Control at the Ministry of Education, said that the center is conducting sustainable effort to develop its training capacity and expand the fields of study. At a graduation ceremony conducted on 2 July, Mr. Tesfaberhan Mehansho, head of Administration and Finances of the Vocational Training Center said that the six-month training is part of the effort being exerted to provide disadvantaged youth with vocational training and enabling them become productive members of the society. Mr. Tesfaberhan went on to say that youth graduated with various vocational fields in the last three rounds have already being provided with job opportunities and called on the newly graduates to follow their footsteps. Mr. Kiflay Andemicael, head of the Ministry of Education branch in the Anseba region on his part called on the trainees to live up to the expectation of the nation and institutions to provide them with job opportunities. Mr. Weldu Berhe, head of Quality Control of Adult Education at the Ministry of Education branch called on the trainees to practically upgrade their skills and become role models to their peers. According to report, members of the PFDJ organization in France have organized their first congress on 29 June in the city of Nantes. At the congress in which Mr. Sileshi Idris, head of Public and Community Affairs in Switzerland, and representatives of PFDJ organizations from the French cities of Nantes, Angers, Rennes, Metz and Paris took part, Ms. Hanna Simon, Eritrean Ambassador to France, said that strong effort has been exerted to strengthen the organizational capacity of citizens residing in France and called for strengthening participation. At the event, Ms. Yordanos Tekle, head of the National Union of Eritrean Women branch in France, gave briefing on the activities conducted in all cities aimed at strengthening organizational capacity. In the same vein, Mr. Yohannes Teklemicael, Eritrean Ambassador to South Sudan, conducted seminar on 30 June focusing on the progress of the peace agreement signed between Eritrea and Ethiopia as well as the lifting of the illegal sanctions that has been imposed on Eritrea. Ambassador Yohannes also called on the nationals to strengthen organizational capacity and participation in the national development drives. The Charge d’Affairs at the Eritrean Embassy in Kuwait, Mr. Humed Yahya also conducted seminar to Eritrean nationals in Kuwait. Mr. Idris Saleh, D. G. of Culture and Sports in the region, said that the region is resident to eight out of the nine ethnic groups in the country and with cultural diversity and expressed on the importance of conducting research on the untapped cultural heritage. At the workshop that was conducted under the theme “Integrated Effort for Reviving Cultural Heritage” various research papers were presented including on traditional dances and music, traditional music instruments, folklores, general condition of heritage in the region as well activities conducted in the conservation and documentation of heritage. The participants conducted extensive discussion on the papers presented and adopted various recommendations and called for conducting extensive research on the cultural heritage, timely documentation of heritage as well as establishment of regional museum. Speaking at the occasion, Ambassador Zemede Tekle, Commissioner of Culture and Sports, gave extensive briefing on the activities and mandate of the commission and expressed readiness to support in the activities being conducted to study and document cultural heritage in the region. Mr. Fesehaye Haile, Governor of the region, on his part indicating the significance of the workshop in raising the awareness of the public on cultural heritage called for organizing similar workshops at sub-zonal levels.

Asmara, 02 July 2019- President Isaias Afwerki today, 2 July met and held talks at the State House with Let. Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Daglo, Deputy Chairman of the Transitional Military Council of Sudan. At the meeting, President Isaias underlined the responsibility of the Transitional Military Council and the support of the Government of Eritrea for the smooth and peaceful consummation of the transition process. President Isaias and Let. Gen. Mohammed Hamdan also discussed on the progress of relations between the two countries as well as developments in the Sudan. The two sides further discussed the progress of Eritrea-Sudan bilateral ties. In this respect, the two sides agreed to open the border between the two countries as well as on the formation of Joint Committee to chart out the modalities and monitor the implementation of the agreement. The Forestry and Wild Life Authority of Eritrea announced that it has rediscovered ‘Eritrean Gazelle’ (Eudorcas Tilonura). Asmara, 29 June 2019- The Forestry and Wild Life Authority of Eritrea announced that it has rediscovered ‘Eritrean Gazelle’ (Eudorcas Tilonura). According to Mr. Fitsum Hagos, head of Conservation and Development at the Authority, the ‘Eritrean Gazelle’ was discovered during the Italian colonialism and that due to the successive era of colonialism and war there was no information about the existence of the gazelle until it was rediscovered in 2019 at the Dige sub-zone, Gash Barka region. Indicating that the gazelle is identified by the black mark at its belly, Mr. Fitsum said that the gazelle is one of the two gazelles in Eritrea that are draught resistant and could survive for about one year without water. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has confirmed that the ‘Eritrean Gazelle’ is categorized as endangered wild animal. Mr. Fitsum went on to say that as a result of the due attention and interest of the Government of Eritrea on wildlife new discoveries is emerging from time to time. Pointing out that the rediscovery of the ‘Eritrean Gazelle’ is the result of the increased awareness of the public on environmental conservation; Mr. Fitsum said that the Eritrea’s Side Neck Turtle that was observed in 1835 was rediscovered in 2016. Mr. Fitsum also said that the rediscovery of the ‘Eritrean Gazelle’ will have significant contribution in the development of tourism industry in the country and called on the public to play due role in conservation of wildlife.

The objective of the training was to build capacity of the staff of the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment in maintenance of the MESA station and the thematic experts in the analysis of Earth Observation data and use in environmental monitoring.   Asmara, 28 June 2019- The Ministry of Land, Water and Environment organized training on Global Monitoring and Environmental Security from 24 to 28 June. The objective of the training was to build capacity of the staff of the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment in maintenance of the MESA station and the thematic experts in the analysis of Earth Observation data and use in environmental monitoring. The five days training that was organized in cooperation with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Prediction and Application Center was attended by 26 staff members of the Ministries of Land, Water and Environment, Agriculture, Marine Resources and Local Government. Indicating that 10 African countries including Eritrea have installed MESA station, Mr. Kifelemariam Sebhatu said that the objective of the training is to revive and develop the capacity of the staff members. Mr. Kiflemariam reiterated that the objective of the training is also to expand the station aimed at providing observation and analysis service to all sectors. Indicating the importance of integrated effort in collecting reliable earth observation data, Ms. Viola Otieno, expert of earth observation from Kenya, said that continuous effort will be conducted in the human resources development and expansion of the Earth Observation stations. The trainees on their part expressing the significance of the training in their activities, called for its sustainability.

Students in the Gash Barka region that registered higher marks in the eight grade national examination have received Tamfeda Award at a ceremony held on 17 June. Barentu, 26 June 2019- Students in the Gash Barka region that registered higher marks in the eight grade national examination have received Tamfeda Award at a ceremony held on 17 June. The awardees include 60 students including 18 female students from 17 schools in the region. The head of the Political Affairs at the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students in the region, Mr. Markos Girmatsion said that the award is in continuation being conducted to encourage students become competitive in their education and that students that score over 85% are eligible for the award. Indicating that the number of the awardees at regional level is still low, Mr. Markos called on the concerned institutions and other stakeholders to strengthen participation for better outcome. Over one million tree seedlings are ready for plantation across the country through the Students Summer Work Program.   Asmara, 26 June 2019- Over one million tree seedlings are ready for plantation across the country through the Students Summer Work Program. The report was made by the head of the Summer Work Program at the Ministry of Education, Mr. Fitwi Woldegergis. Indicating that the Summer Work Program has already started in the Southern Red Sea region on 1 June, Mr. Fitwi said that the other regions will start form 2 July in the Central region and from 8 July in the other four regions. Mr. Fitwi went on to say that the Summer Work Program that will be participated by over 30 thousand students and 1500 caretakers will include soil and water conservation, tree planting, construction of terraces as well as renovation of dirt roads. The soil and water conservation activities will be conducted at schools, public institutions, as well as renovating school desks and chairs, Mr. Fitwi added. The Students Summer Work Program commenced in 1994 and that so far over 24 million tree seedlings have been planted and over 16 thousand km of terraces have been constructed.

Asmara, 25 June 2019- Eritrean delegation led by Mr. Hagos Gebrehiwet, Head of PFDJ Economic Affairs, met and held talks with Mr. Wang Yi, Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China in the sideline of the meeting on the Implementation of the Follow-up Actions of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). The two officials discussed on bilateral ties of cooperation and regional and international issues of mutual interest. Mr. Hagos underlined the long-standing ties between the two countries, Eritrea's development matrix that is based on the promotion of trade and investment as well as China's support in the past years which has been impacting in several sectors. Foreign Minister Wang Yi on his part indicating the historic relations between Eritrea and China expressed his country’s readiness to work with Eritrea at regional and global forums. According to report, Eritrean community members in Kassala, Qadarif, Port-Sudan and Khartoum, the Sudan, as well as PFDJ, NUEW, YPFDJ organizations and youth members of St. Michael and Abune Aregawi Churches as part of the initiative they assumed to support 15 families of martyrs contributed 47,850 Sudanese Pound. Similarly, Eritrean nationals in Milano and its environs contributed 22 thousand Euros, nationals in the Netherlands cities of Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Amersfoort, Kampen, Leiden, and Utrecht have respectively contributed 5931; 2,719; 1,600; 1140; 930 and 500 Euros in support of families of martyrs and in augmenting the Martyrs Trust Fund. Likewise, Eritrean nationals in the US cities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis as well as in Atlanta and its environs and Chicago contributed 12,478 and 12,000 and 52,500 thousand Dollars respectively. In the same vein, nationals in Israel known as “Deki Hade Libi” contributed 12 thousand US Dollars while residents in South Africa 3,217 US Dollars and nationals in Cologne, Germany contributed 1,200 Euros. In related news, Naod and Yohanna Fitsum, underage brothers, have pledged to raise 30 US Dollars monthly to support families of martyrs for one year.
