Asmara, 02 June 2019 - A two-day workshop on labor in Eritrea that was organized in cooperation with the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers (NCEW) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) concluded on Friday, 31 May. At the conclusion of the workshop that was conducted under the theme “Future Labor in Eritrea: Initiative of a Century”. Mr. Yemane Gebreab, Head of PFDJ Political Affairs gave extensive briefing on regional peace and new opportunities for sustainable growth and said that the prevailing regional peace and partnership is new opportunity for the peoples of the region that has been in turmoil and war in the last 60 years. Indicating that Eritrea has been working for regional peace and cooperation in the region since the armed struggle for independence, Mr. Yemane underlined that in the new era of peace, Eritrea is exerting capacity level effort in realizing regional cooperation based on common interest and trust as well as on respecting the sovereignty and political choice of countries. Mr. Samson Berhane, from the Ministry of National Development, also presented a research paper on development strategy of Eritrea and the economic growth Eritrea has achieved on various sectors including health, education and expansion of social services despite the 1998 border war and its subsequent external conspiracies. The participants conducted extensive discussion on the report presented and adopted various recommendations. Ambassador Tesfamicael Gerahtu, from the Ministry of Foreign Ministry and Mr. Tekeste Baire, General Secretary of the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers, gave concluding speeches underlining the timeliness of double fold effort in nation building endeavors and called for substantial investments to be made in empowering the youth. Mr. Woldyesus Elisa, G.D. of Labor at the Ministry of Labor and Social welfare, also delivered a speech on the objectives of the workshop.

The National Insurance Corporation of Eritrea (NICE) held its 15th share holders’ annual meeting at the Asmara Palace Hotel on 31 May. Asmara, 01 June 2019- The National Insurance Corporation of Eritrea (NICE) held its 15th share holders’ annual meeting at the Asmara Palace Hotel on 31 May. Speaking at the event, the General Manager of the Corporation, Mr. Zeru Woldemicael indicated that in 2018 the corporation has made 96.7 million Nakfa profit and that 87.9 million Nakfa has been disbursed to shareholders. Expressing appreciation for the interest demonstrated by the share holders and their legal representatives, Mr. Ghirmai Gebremeskel, the Board Chairman of the Corporation, articulated his expectation that the meeting will adopt recommendations and resolution for the better future performance of the Corporation. At the meeting briefings were provided focusing investment made inside the country and abroad, opportunities and challenges encountered, as well as the progress of life insurance and other relevant issues. The participants conducted extensive discussion on the report presented and adopted various resolutions and recommendations. The National Insurance Corporation of Eritrea was established in 1992 and in 2004 sold 44% to shareholders.

Asmara, 1 June 2019 - The National Confederation of Eritrean Workers (NCEW) in cooperation with International Labor Organization (ILO) organized workshop on labor in Eritrea under the theme “Future Labor in Eritrea: Initiative of a Century”. Speaking during the opening event in which Ms. Leul Gebreab, Minster of Labor and Human Welfare, and Dr. Weldai Fitur, Head of Investment Center took part, Mr. Tekeste Baire, General Director of the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers, said that since  1993 Eritrea despite the challenges it has been facing has been playing due part by honoring the tripartite labor relations. Mr. Tekeste also said that a lot of experience has been gained in the past 26 years. Discussion papers were presented focusing regional peace for sustainable development, labor opportunities and social justice, national development programs, investment on human resources development, influence of globalization and technology on labor, opportunities and challenges in Eritrea as well as the prospect of peace and cooperation between Eritrea and Ethiopia. Dr. Woldai Fitur, Head of Investment Center, Mr. Woldyesus Elisa, General Director of Labor at the Ministry of Labor and Social welfare, and Ms. Waffa Abdelkader from the International Labor Organization also gave briefing on international labor and its future, measures that should be taken to develop human resource in developing countries, contribution of skilled labor as well as challenges of countries in developing their human resource.

The Eritrean Air Force graduated yesterday, 31 May 250 cadets on aircraft technology, air defense missile and radar systems, aviation theories and pilots for different fighter aircrafts in the presence of President Isaias Afwerki. Asmara, 1 June 2019 - The Eritrean Air Force graduated yesterday, 31 May 250 cadets on aircraft technology, air defense missile and radar systems, aviation theories and pilots for different fighter aircrafts in the presence of President Isaias Afwerki. During the graduation ceremony  held at the Air Force base in Asmara, President Isaias handed out certificates and Air Force armband to the cadets. Noting that the young trainees will have significant contribution in developing the capacity of the Air Force, Maj. General Teklai Habteselasie, Commander of the Eritrean Air Force, called on the cadets to serve their people and Government with commitment and protect the skies of their country. The cadets on their part expressed appreciation for the training they received and articulated commitment to diligently serve their country and people.

Eritrean nationals residing in Belgium, Norway, the US and Zambia have enthusiastically celebrated the 28th Independence Day anniversary under the theme “Resilience for Higher Progress”.   Asmara, 31 May 2019- Eritrean nationals residing in Belgium, Norway, the US and Zambia have enthusiastically celebrated the 28th Independence Day anniversary under the theme “Resilience for Higher Progress”. At the celebratory event the nationals in Brussels commending for the significant development achievements Eritrea has so far registered expressed readiness to play due part in the implementation of the national development programs. Indicating that the new era of peace and cooperation unfolding in the Horn of Africa is mainly the result of the perseverance and sacrifice of the Eritrean people, Mr. Negassi Kassa, Eritrean Ambassador to the European Union, said that strong effort will be exerted to substantiate the achievement registered with public diplomacy activities. Likewise, the nationals in Trondheim, Norway, celebrated the 28th Independence Day anniversary featuring various activities portraying their attachment with their homeland and expressing their commitment to contribute in the success of the national development drives. In the same vein, nationals in the US cities of Tennessee, Nashville, and Phoenix celebrated Independence Day anniversary with patriotic zeal. The event was highlighted with artistic and cultural programs. The nationals in Zambia also celebrated the 28th Independence Day anniversary with various programs featuring their unity and attachment with their homeland.

Asmara, 30 May 2019- Eritrean delegation led by Mr. Beyene Russom, Eritrean Ambassador to Kenya and Tanzania and Permanent Representative of Eritrea to the UN Human Settlement and Environment Program, is taking part at the First Session of the UN Habitat Assembly taking place in Nairobi from 27 to 30 May. Speaking at the meeting that is underway under the theme “Innovation for Better Quality of Life in Cities and Communities”, Ambassador Beyene said that the interchanging factors of poverty, unemployment coupled with the emergence of new technology, opportunities, better facilities and increased wealth are among the main factors for the rapid urbanization. And that caused displacing agricultural workforce, climate change disasters and other man made crisis causing mass migrations from rural areas to urban centers, Ambassador Beyene added. Ambassador Beyene went on to say that the fact that basic economic infrastructure, financial institutions, industrial complexes and communication hubs are centered in urban areas are contributing to the migration of people to cities.Indicating that as in other African countries, most of the Eritrean people live in rural areas, Ambassador Beyene said that the Government of Eritrea is exerting effort to ensure basic social service and equitable opportunities to citizens across the country. At the meeting Eritrea was elected at the Bureau of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR) representing Africa.The UN Habitat Assembly is expected to accelerate the implementation of the new urban agenda towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and approve the reviewed UN Habitat Strategic Plan 2020-2025.

President of the Republic of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong and Prince of Malta Giacomo Dalla Torre sent messages of congratulations to the people and Government of Eritrea in connection with the 28th Independence Day Anniversary. Asmara, 30 May 2019 - President of the Republic of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong and Prince of Malta Giacomo Dalla Torre sent messages of congratulations to the people and Government of Eritrea in connection with the 28th Independence Day Anniversary. In their messages the leaders wished good health to President Isaias Afwerki and peace and prosperity to the Eritrean people. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Romania, Teodor Melescanu also sent  similar message of congratulation to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Eritrea Mr. Osman Saleh.

The Ministry of Land, Water and Environment reported that major nation-wide projects of water infrastructure and distribution networks, especially in Asmara, launched in the past years are progressing with satisfactory pace to address household consumption, agricultural and industrial needs in accordance with comprehensive national roadmap.   Asmara, 29 May 2019- The Ministry of Land, Water and Environment reported that major nation-wide projects of water infrastructure and distribution networks, especially in Asmara, launched in the past years are progressing with satisfactory pace to address household consumption, agricultural and industrial needs in accordance with comprehensive national roadmap. Indicating that pre-independence Eritrea had been relying from rainfall, the Ministry indicated that in the past 28 years about 300 dams have been constructed with a view to enrich under ground water. The report further stated that provision of potable water in urban areas has increased from 30% to 90% and that of rural areas from 7% to 80%. Mr. Saleh Ahmedin, head of Adi-Halo project, said that strategic dams including Kerkebet, Fanko-Tsimue, Fanko-Rawi, Gerset and Misilam have been constructed and Gahtelai dam is under construction and that aggregate volume of water harvested in the dams exceeds 500 million cubic meters. Pointing out that effort is being exerted to alleviate the portable water supply shortage in major cities and in Asmara in particular, Mr. Saleh said that the putting in place of water reservoirs in higher placed in Asmara attest to the effort being exerted. Mr. Saleh went on to say that the water reservoirs are expected to hold 77 thousand barrels of water. 

Eritrean nationals residing in Saudi Arabia and Canada have celebrated the 28th Independence Day anniversary with enthusiasm under the theme “Resilience for Higher Progress”. Asmara, 25 May 2019- Eritrean nationals residing in Saudi Arabia and Canada have celebrated the 28th Independence Day anniversary with enthusiasm under the theme “Resilience for Higher Progress”. At the celebration event the nationals conducted in Jeddah on 23 May at the Red Sea Hall, the Eritrean Consul, Mr. Saleh Mahmud congratulating the Eritrean people and its Defence Forces called for reinforcing participation in strengthening the political, economic and diplomatic achievements that were realized through the resilience and steadfastness of the Eritrean people. The event was highlighted by programs organized by the students of the Eritrean community schools. In the same vein, Eritrean nationals residing in London and Ontario, Canada, celebrated the 28th Independence Day anniversary on 19 May. At the event in which a number of nationals took part, Mr. Sahle Redae, Chairman of the Eritrean community, said that this year’s Independence Day is being celebrated at a time in which the Eritrean people have registered significant diplomatic achievements. At the event the invited Canadians also congratulated the Eritrean people residing in Canada. Eritrean nationals residing in the United Kingdom also celebrated the 28th Independence Day anniversary on 23 May in London.

Dear Participant and GuestsLadies and Gentlemen,Let me first convey my heartfelt congratulations to the Eritrean people inside the country and in the Diaspora.  I also wish to express our gratitude to all those who stood on the side of the Eritrean people, on the side of truth and justice, for their invaluable solidarity.  My thanks to the Commission of Culture and Sports and all compatriots and foreign institutions for their endeavours to imbue commensurate magnificence to this auspicious occasion.Ladies and Gentlemen,The theme of the 2019 Independence Anniversary is “Resilience for Higher Progress”!  Because this is a historical juncture in which the extraordinary resilience of the Eritrean people has been elevated and emerged triumphant once again.  The Eritrean people deserved to be independent, like other colonized peoples and even more so, in the immediate aftermath of the end of the Second World War.  But their inalienable national right was suppressed as the great powers of the time felt that “an independent Eritrea would not serve their strategic interests”. For fifty years, the people of Eritrea had to overcome political subterfuges aimed at creating divisions and cleavages amongst them; challenge and triumph over annexation and occupation; and, conduct a thirty-year long armed struggle with unparalleled heroism and sacrifice to achieve independence on the basis of the supremacy of the rule of law.  In those fifty years, the Eritrean people confronted and vanquished the machinations of their external enemies.  They also secured their independence and sovereignty by combating internal divisive and toxic political tendencies, including a painful internecine war; by constantly strengthening their political cohesion. To highlight a few of the principal values that underpin our resilience: Not to succumb and yield to force and intimidation!.... Not to cede to illicit and duplicitous machinations!  Not to compromise one’s dignity and values for cheap rewards and inducements! Not to be distressed under extreme duress!  Not to be disheartened by overwhelming challenges! Not to tire with hard work!  Not to spare one’s toil and blood, including one’s life!... Not to relent until objectives are achieved!  These firm convictions go beyond sheer beliefs and pledges.  They have been repeatedly demonstrated and have become the defining characteristics of the Eritrean people’s heritage.How about in the last 28 years of independence and sovereignty?As the Eritrean people embarked on the reconstruction and rehabilitation of their nation liberated through heavy sacrifices, they faced relentless hostilities designed to subdue, weaken and hold them hostage.  To this end, senseless border disputes were concocted! Unwarranted sanctions imposed!  Naked military attacks launched!  Political ruses, economic subversion, human trafficking as well as psychological warfare and demonization aimed at isolating Eritrea were perpetrated.  One can say: “thwarting all these wrongs would have been unimaginable without the resilience of the Eritrean people”! Ladies and Gentlemen,And today?Our considered approach - when it was deemed that “all past machinations” have ceased and until the illicit sanctions were lifted -  was based on recognition of the unfolding events and realities “as the beginnings of a new era”.  Naturally, these are times of jubilation, lofty aspirations and euphoria!  But these momentous events should not prompt us to underestimate the challenges the new era brings. Before prematurely charting out new and permanent sustainable development programmes, it is imperative that we conduct extensive political, economic and security appraisals so as to properly diagnose the unfolding realities with requisite depth.   We cannot make hasty and emotional conclusions before we collect adequate information, analyze these data comprehensively with patience so as to have a clear picture.  Hence, our focus should be geared towards patient appraisal of the unfolding reality. Our tasks and priorities today as well as for the near future should be to guarantee a conducive climate and basis for the new era.  This precept emanates from our values that have crystallized over time.  In this new era and without departing from the fundamental principles of nation-building, our cardinal objectives consist of creating and augmenting national wealth through hard work and efficient productivity, and, ensuring equitable distribution of resources and opportunities.  Our principal aim is to transform the primordial subsistence economy to a modern and developed industrial economy to bring sustainable change in the quality of life to vast segments of the population; especially those deprived in the past.    In order to pursue our nation building endeavours with a steady pace by marshalling our resources, and to capitalize on the momentum for greater rapid growth, we need to rigorously review fundamental programmes that will buttress real economic growth through higher productivity and increased output.  These development programmes can be distilled as follows:o    Water infrastructure and distribution: To further refine our programmes of water supply for household, agriculture, and industrial consumption with the utilization of modern technology and associated means. o    Road, rail, cableway and oil pipelines:  The three phases of i) renovation of existing systems; ii) expansion to ensure higher efficiency; and iii) implementation of new schemes that we have been pursuing in all these categories should be pursued with greater efficiency and expeditious scale of implementation. o    Ports and coastlines: To revive projects that were obstructed and interrupted, with upgraded plans and implement them within a wide framework of cooperation and partnership. o    Power generation and electricity supply:  To replace the old and unreliable power generation system with a functional grid in the interim period and focus on the design and implementation of an expansive system that will adequately meet all long-term needs and requirements. o    Efficient and effective modern domestic road; rail, sea and air transport:  To link these systems with regional networks within a revised plan. o    Housing:  To implement  -  with revised plans, better technology and efficiency -  various housing projects that have not been successful so far as provision of housing remains one of the fundamental yardsticks for measuring the quality of  life. o    Health and Education Services:  To modernize the health infrastructure to address wider category of health needs and services; to prioritize effective and all-rounded investment in education in order to improve access at all levels and thereby bolster our human capital which is critical for development and nation-building. o    Industrial sector: To undertake comprehensive review – of each programme and each enterprise -  in order to formulate and implement a refined investment road-map. o    Implementation: To polish existing implementation mechanism in all the Development Fronts for higher effectiveness and to especially expedite the review of programmes and modalities underway to match the decisive contributions of our citizens in the Diaspora. o    Ensuring efficiency and effectiveness: to strengthen the relentless fight against corruption and speculation. o    Regional partnership and stability: to actively create a conducive regional climate for mutual respect and genuine partnership that enhance domestic development programmes.Ladies and Gentlemen,The above listed programmes are not new.  Comprehensive revision of the detailed programmes and implementing them within the framework of the new era cannot be accomplished through simplistic solutions and short-cuts.  They will depend, as always, on the full participation of our people and their relentless toil and resilience.   This will not be difficult as the inherent values and traditions of resilience – encapsulated in the mantra of “Resilience through Resilience”  – is intact as ever.As it has been the case throughout our history, and more so in this present era, there are those who are exemplary in their selfless dedication; who give their all without any reward; and, who give us moral gratification.  I avail of this occasion to express our profound gratitude to all these exceptional people, who work the most and hardest, and to members and leaders of our Defense Forces”.Resilience for Higher Progress!Our Progress will continue with good rains!And above all, Glory to our Martyrs!Victory to the Masses!

The Japanese cultural troupe ‘Heavens’ staged musical performance in connection with the 28th Independence Day anniversary on 21 May at the Cinema Roma portraying the culture and tradition of the Japanese people. Asmara, 20 May 2019- The Japanese cultural troupe ‘Heavens’ staged musical performance in connection with the 28th Independence Day anniversary on 21 May at the Cinema Roma portraying the culture and tradition of the Japanese people.The musical performance that was organized in cooperation with the Commission of Culture and Sports and Japan Foundation, under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, was attended by Government officials, members of the Diplomatic Corps as well as other invited guests.The cultural troupe is composed of 21 modern and cultural musicians.It is to be recalled that the Cultural troupes of the Republic of Egypt and the Peoples Republic of China have staged musical performances at Cinema Roma and have added color to the Independence Day celebrations.  

A carnival show under the theme “Resilience for Higher Progress” was staged today, May 22 in the streets of Asmara in connection with the 28th Independence Day Anniversary. Asmara, 22 May 2019- A carnival show under the theme “Resilience for Higher Progress” was staged today, May 22 in the streets of Asmara in connection with the 28th Independence Day Anniversary.The carnival show featuring the arduous struggle conducted for independence and safeguarding the national sovereignty as well as the unfolding peace and cooperation was staged by the 13 sub-zones of the Central region and three public institutions.The carnival was opened by Mr. Alamin Mohammed Seid, Secretary of PFDJ and Maj. Gen. Romodan Osman Aweliai, Governor of the Central region.Upon passing through the streets of Asmara, the Carnival received acclamation by Asmara residents, Eritrean nationals from Diaspora as well as foreign nationals.  

President Sergio Mattarella of the Republic of Italy sent message of congratulation to the people and Government of Eritrea in connection with the 28th Independence Day anniversary.   Asmara, 22 May 2019- President Sergio Mattarella of the Republic of Italy sent message of congratulation to the people and Government of Eritrea in connection with the 28th Independence Day anniversary. In his message, President Mattarella wished good health to President Isaias Afwerki and peace and prosperity to the Eritrean people. President Mattarella also said that the deep-rooted friendship between Eritrea and Italy have recently found new spaces for implementation following the historic peace agreement between Eritrea and Ethiopia.

The Eritrean senior delegation composed of Mr. Osman Saleh, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Presidential Adviser Mr. Yemane Gebreab met and held talks on 20 May with the representatives of the Sudanese Declaration of Freedom and Change. The DFC welcomed the visit of the Eritrean delegation stressing special relations between the two countries and briefed about their vision for Sudan and current status of the negotiations with the Transitional Military Council. The Eritrean delegation on its part conveyed Eritrea’s wishes for an outcome that serves the interests of peace, stability and development in Sudan. The delegation on 19 May met with the Deputy President of the Transitional Military Council, Gen. Mohammed Hamdan. Gen. Hamdan said that the current visit of the Eritrean delegation signifies the end of a chapter and the beginning of a promising occasion in the bilateral ties between Eritrea and the Sudan.

The ceremony that was conducted on 20 May in London in which over 2 thousand nationals took part, Mr. Estifanos Habtemariam, Eritrean Ambassador to the UK and Northern Ireland, said that this year’s Independence Day celebration is being conducted at the time in which Eritrea emerged victorious against all external conspiracies aimed at derailing the national development progress. Ambassador Estifanos went on to say that the new era of peace and cooperation is the result of the strong resilience and commitment of the Eritrean people and called as in the past to strengthen participation. The head of the Eritrean community in the UK, Mr. Ahmed Mohammed on his part said that the Independence Day celebration beyond consolidating the unity of the Eritrean people has significant contribution in transferring the noble societal values to generations. In the same vein, Eritrean national in Milano and its environs enthusiastically celebrated Independence Day anniversary featuring artistic and cultural performances. Mr. Fesehatsion Petros, Eritrean Ambassador to Italy, indicated that the new era of peace and cooperation unfolding in the region demands double fold effort in realizing the vision and aspiration of the Eritrean people and called for strengthening organizational capacity and unity. The ceremony was attended by a number of nationals and friends of Eritrea. Likewise, Eritrean nationals in the Canadian cities of Toronto and Itchenor and in Melbourne, Australia colorfully celebrated the 28th Independence Day anniversary on 19 May.

Senior Eritrean delegation comprising Mr. Osman Saleh, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Presidential Adviser Mr. Yemane Gebreab met and delivered message of President Isaias Afwerki to the President of the Transitional Military Council of Sudan, Lt. Gen. Abdul Fattah Al-Burhan today, 19 May in Khartoum. Asmara, 19 May 2019- Senior Eritrean delegation comprising Mr. Osman Saleh, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Presidential Adviser Mr. Yemane Gebreab met and delivered message of President Isaias Afwerki to the President of the Transitional Military Council of Sudan,  Lt. Gen. Abdul Fattah Al-Burhan today, 19 May in Khartoum. In his message, President Isaias stressed Eritrea’s confidence in the ability of the Sudanese people to find solution to their own issues. The President of the Transitional Military Council of Sudan, Lt. Gen. Al-Burhan welcomed the initiative of Eritrea and briefed the delegation on the developments in the country. Both sides also affirmed their readiness to put the relations of the two countries back on track. The Eritrean delegation is on a two-day official visit to Sudan.

At the celebrations held in Khartoum in which Sudanese officials and a number of Eritrean nationals as well as invited guests took part, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, Charge d’Affairs at the Eritrean Embassy said that this year’s Independence Day anniversary is being celebrated at the time in which the Eritrean people have achieved significant diplomatic victories. Mr. Ibrahim further noted that strong effort is being exerted to ensure the ongoing process of peace and cooperation in the Horn of Africa. Indicating that the Independence Day anniversary is a day in which the Eritrean people renew their pledge to work double fold for the success of the national development drives, Mr. Ibrahim called for strong resilience for higher progress. Gen. Ibrahim Jabir, representative of the Transitional Government of Sudan, on his part congratulated the people and Government of Eritrea and expressed readiness to work for strengthening the existing historic relations between his country and Eritrea. The event was highlighted by artistic and musical performances as well as photo exhibition of the historical buildings of Asmara.

Mr. Eyob Habteab, organizer of the concert, stated that the concert was unique as it was staged at a time of peaceful prospect in the region. In the same vein, the residents of Paradizo sub-zone, Central region celebrated the 28th Independence Day anniversary o today, 18 May with patriotic zeal. The Celebration was attended by Maj. Gen. Romodan Osman Aweliay, Governor of the Central region, Ambassador Zemede Teckle, Commissioner of Culture and Sports and other government officials. The event was highlighted by the presence of the renowned Eritrean-American actress, comedian and author, Tiffany Hadish, who arrived in Asmara on 17 May to take part at the 28th Independence Day anniversary celebration. Tiffany Hadish told Erina that she is excited to be part of something historic and cannot wait to share with the whole world.

At the ceremony held at the Expo compound, Mr. Fitsum Hagos, coordinator of ‘Green Campaign’ indicated that currently deforestation activities and poaching of wild animals are among the main challenges. Mr. Fistum also commended the exemplary initiatives of safeguarding the preserved areas by members of the defense forces as well as the establishment and management of nurseries by various government and public institutions. Mr. Abraha Garza, General Manager of Forestry and Wild Life Authority on his part called for tough measures against those engaged in deforestation and poaching activities. Speaking at the event, Mr. Arefaine Berhe, Minister of Agriculture called for nurturing generations with the culture of forestation, big events to be accompanied with forestation programs as well as encourage public institutions and individuals engage in forestation activities. At the event 83 exemplary individuals and institutions were awarded with agricultural tools and solar energy panels.

D. of Eritrean Television and Mr. Azim Yarakhmedov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Eritrea. The agreement includes exchange of programs for rebroadcast, training of staff members, as well using RT as alternative sources of information for Eritrean Television. Speaking at the event, Mr. Yemane Gebremeskel, Minister of Information said that the signing of the agreement is being made at a time in which the Ministry of Information is working to expand source of information and that the three pillars agreement is a significant step. Ambassador Azim Yarakhmedov on his part said that the agreement will have important contribution in strengthening the existing relations between Eritrea and Russia. Russia Today owned by the Russian Government is one of the major information networks worldwide.

Students of the Sawa Vocational Training Center organized programs on 11 and 12 May in connection with the 28th Independence Day anniversary under the theme “Youth Equipped with Knowledge and Skill: Vanguard of National Development”. Sawa, 14 May 2019- Students of the Sawa Vocational Training Center organized programs on 11 and 12 May in connection with the 28th Independence Day anniversary under the theme “Youth Equipped with Knowledge and Skill: Vanguard of National Development”.Indicating that the program was focused on educational and artistic activities, the head of the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students branch at the center, Mr. Kobel Tekle said that activities including general knowledge completion, debating, poems and short stories as well as traditional and modern music performances were part of the program.Mr. Kobel went on to say that painting competition, fashion shows and cloth designs were staged reflecting the talent and tendencies of the students.Ms. Mensura Ismail, head of the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students in Sawa and Institutions of Higher Education, said that the students week was organized in cooperation with the NUEYS and Sawa Vocational Training Center, and similar programs will be conducted in the other Institutions of Higher Education. She also commended those who contributed in the realization of the program.At the event prizes were handed over to winners of various competitions.

Asmara, 14 May 2019- The Eritrean community members in Cairo, Egypt, have celebrated the 28th Independence Day anniversary under the theme “Resilience for Higher Progress”. At the event in which a number of nationals took part, Mr. Fasil Gebreselasie, Eritrean Ambassador in Egypt, indicated that the Eritrean people in the past 60 years have emerged victorious against all external conspiracies through their strong perseverance and resilience. Ambassador Fesil also expressed expectation that in the new era of peace the Eritrean people will renew their pledge to double fold effort in the nation building process. The heads of Eritrean communities, the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students as well as the National Union of Eritrean Women delivered messages in connection with the 28th Independence Day anniversary.

Ms. Amina Nurhussen, Minister of Health and Dr. Hala Mustafa met and held talks at Asmara Palace Hotel focusing on strengthening relations and cooperation between the two countries in the health sector. The two Ministers accompanied by Mr. Yasser Ali Mahmud, Ambassador of Egypt in Eritrea, and heads of the Ministry of Health visited the Orotta Referral, Dembe Sembel, Halibet and Brhan Aini Hospitals and were provided briefings on the activities of the hospitals. Minister Amina Nurhussen said that the visit of Dr. Hala will have significant contribution in strengthening the existing cooperation and sharing experiences between the two sides in the health sector. Indicating the long years of historic relations between Eritrea and Egypt, Dr. Hala said that the visit is in continuation of the ongoing exchange of visits by officials of both countries and that will have significant contribution in taking it to the highest level. Pointing out that Egypt will learn from the experience of the victory Eritrea achieved in controlling communicable diseases, Dr. Hala said that Eritrea will also learn from the experience Egypt had to go through to eradicate Yellow Fever. Minister Amina also hosted dinner reception in honor of Dr. Hala and her delegation at the Asmara Palace Hotel.

Asmara, 13 May 2019- The official 28th Independence Day anniversary celebration will start nationwide from 15 to 24 May under the theme “Resilience for Higher Progress”.Indicating that sports activities and schools independence week have been underway beginning from 4 May, Ambassador Zemede Tekle, Commissioner of Culture and Sports pointed out that the Independence Day celebrations will incorporate  musical and artistic performances by Eritrean and Foreign artists, handicrafts and innovation exhibitions, carnival, community gatherings as well as cultural and community programs.Ambassador Zemede also said that cultural troupes for Japan, China and Egypt will stage programs and that will add color to the celebrations.Pointing out that this year’s Independence Day theme is “Resilience for Higher Progress”, Ambassador Zemede said that that reflects the noble culture and values of perseverance and commitment of the Eritrean people that enable it to reach to this period of peaceful prospect and cooperation.Ambassador Zemede went on to say that Independence Day anniversary celebrations is highlighted by the strong participation and ownership of the public and called for active participation.

Asmara, 10 May 2019- Validation workshop to review the Draft Pesticides Legislation was conducted from 9 to 10 May at the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers Hall. Mr. Tekleab Misgina, D. G. of Regulation and Supervision Service at the Ministry of Agriculture, indicated that the objective of the workshop was to review and enrich the legislation that was prepared 12 years ago in cooperation with concerned institutions. The legislation will incorporate modality of importing pesticides, its environmental impact, documentation, legal measures on illegally pesticide entering the country as well as means of transporting and storage. The participants conducted extensive discussion of the draft legislation.

Asmara, 10 May 2019- A delegation of International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) led by Mr. Mamadou Diallo, General Secretary of ITUC, has conducted an official visit in Eritrea from 7 to 9 May. The delegation comprising Mr. Jeroen Beirnaert, Director of Human and Professional Rights in the Confederation, and Ms. Jemma Stewart, head of Media and Communication, met and talks with the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers executive committee on bilateral cooperation. Indicating hat the objective of their visit was to identify areas of cooperation with the NCEW; the delegation said that the association is initiating programs benefiting the trade associations of Eritrea and Ethiopia in accordance with the new era of peace and cooperation between Eritrea and Ethiopia. The delegation also met and held talks on 9 May with Ms. Leul Gebreab, Minister of Labor and Social Welfare and visited the Zair Textile Factory and Asmara Brewery. ITUC has 207 million members worldwide and Eritrea established relations since 1980 and became full fledged member in 1994.

The senior Eritrean delegation comprising Mr. Osman Saleh, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Presidential Adviser Mr. Yemane Gebreab has conducted productive visit to the Peoples Republic of China. Asmara, 10 May 2019- The senior Eritrean delegation comprising Mr. Osman Saleh, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Presidential Adviser Mr. Yemane Gebreab has conducted productive visit to the Peoples Republic of China. During its stay in China the delegation met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi focusing on bilateral relations and mutual cooperation as well as on regional and global issues of interest to both countries. The delegation also met with Head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China and heads of various enterprises. The meeting with the Communist Part of China was focused on strengthening relations with PFDJ and cooperation between the peoples of the two countries. Likewise, the delegation met with Eritrean students on scholarship in Beijing. The number of Eritrean students in Beijing is still low but growing with 63 receiving scholarships this year.

Asmara, 09 May 2019 - Eritrean nationals residing in Germany, the USA and Italy conducted various public diplomacy activities. According to report, the National Committee in Germany on 4 May organized a seminar to national organizations in various cities of Germany including Stuttgart and its environs, Ulm, Nuremberg and others. At the seminar briefing was given on the structure and mission of the National Committee in Germany, as well as on the principles, regulation, short and long term objective and programs. Speaking at the seminar, Dr. Ablelom Tesfay, chairman of the national committee stated that effort is being exerted to establish strong, coherent and sustainable Eritrean community in Germany. In related news, seminar was organized to nationals residing in Mannheim, Germany, on the objective situation in the homeland and the region. The head of Public and Community Affairs, Mr. Kahsai Tewelde gave extensive briefing on the opportunities and challenges that the prevailing peace in the region poses. Likewise, annual congress of the National Organizations in Central and Western America was conducted on 4 and 5 May in the city of Columbus, report indicates. The congress was attended by representatives from the US cities of Chicago, Grand Rapids, Detroit, Minnesota, Colombia, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Kansas and Cincinnati. Mr. Berhane Gerezgiher, Charge d’Affairs at the Eritrean Embassy in the USA gave a seminar to participants on the objective situation in the homeland. In other news, the Eritrean Community in Parma, Italy on 5 May colorfully celebrated the 28th Anniversary of the Independence Day under the theme “Resilience for Higher Progress”. At the celebration in which nationals and friends of Eritrea from Bologna and Milano took part, message of the day was given by Mr. Girmay Habtemicael, head of Public and Community Affairs.

The Governor of Anseba region, Mr. Ali Mahmus on 5 May conducted tour of inspection to the construction of 35km long dirt road interlinking Hawash, Erota, Eran and Asneda in Asmat sub zone. Keren, 08 May 2019 –The Governor of Anseba region, Mr. Ali Mahmus on 5 May conducted tour of inspection to the construction of 35km long dirt road interlinking Hawash, Erota, Eran and Asneda in Asmat sub zone. Mr. Ali was provided briefing by the coordinators of the program on the progress of the construction and he expressed that the Anseba regional administration will reinforce support in facilitating the construction work. According to the coordinators, the construction of the road is being conducted by popular participation of the residents and members of the Eritrean Defense Forces, and that so far 15km long road has been finalized. They also said that the remaining 20 km is mountainous area that needs machinery support. In related news, extensive water and soil conservation popular campaign has been conducted in Asneda and Erota administrative areas, Asmat sub zone. The aim of the popular campaign that is being conducted five days a week is to redress the environment, enrich potable water sources, tackling erosion and renovation of dirt roads.

The Eritrean delegation met and held talks on 6 May in Beijing with the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Wang Yi focusing on bilateral relations and mutual cooperation as well as on regional and global issues of interest to both countries. Expressing Eritrea’s readiness to develop strong cooperation with China for the benefit of both countries, Foreign Minister Osman Saleh said that Eritrea supports the role of China in ensuring peace and stability in the Horn of Africa. Indicating that the policy of China towards Africa is based on non interference in the internal affairs of countries, Mr. Yang Yi said that China welcomed the positive developments in the Horn of Africa and underlined its readiness to contribute in the consolidation of the ongoing process. The two sides assessed the relation between the two countries to date and discussed ways and means of boosting cooperation in various sectors. During its stay in China, the Eritrea delegation will conduct similar discussions with various Chinese officials and investors.

Asmara, 06 May 2019- Eritrean nationals in Qatar colorfully celebrated the 28th Independence Day anniversary on 3 May under the theme “Resilience for Higher Progress”. The ceremony in which invited guests, Qatar based Ambassadors and members of the Diplomatic Corps of various countries, as well as hundreds of nationals took part was highlighted with musical and artistic performances by cultural troupe from Eritrea. Indicating that the significance and meaning of this year's anniversary highlights the heroic feat and perseverance demonstrated by the Eritrean people in realizing the prevailing peaceful era, the Eritrean Ambassador to Qatar, Mr. Ibrahim Ali stated that the people and Government of Eritrea will mobilize all resources towards the nation building process. He also commended nationals for their contribution in realizing the event. The Chairman of the Eritrean Community in Qatar, Mr. Hashem Mahmud Hassan on his part indicated that Independence Day anniversary is a glorious day during which nationals renew their pledge and commitment to the implementation of the national development programs and to shoulder responsibility to support the families of martyrs. Reports indicate that the celebrations of the 28th Independence Day anniversary in Qatar was held before the beginning of Ramadan fasting.

The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China has extended material support to the National Union of Eritrean Women aimed at developing human resources of the union. Asmara, 03 May 2019- The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China has extended material support to the National Union of Eritrean Women aimed at developing human resources of the union. The material support includes machineries for making ceramics, weaving, design as well as artifacts. At the handing over ceremony that was conducted on 30 April, the Ambassador of the Peoples Republic of China, Mr. Yang Zigang said that the material support attests to the friendly relations and good wish between the Chinese Women’s Federation and the National Union of Eritrean Women and expressed expectation that the materials will have significant contribution in the human resources development of the union. Explaining the long standing and historical relations between Eritrea and China, the President of the NUEW, Ms. Tekea Tesfamicael said that the support is in continuation of the previous stationery and gymnasium materials support the Embassy extended to the union. The ceremony was attended by staff members of the NUEW and Embassy of China.

Initiative is being taken to put ancient and historical buildings in Keren city in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Keren, 04 May 2019- Initiative is being taken to put ancient and historical buildings in Keren city in the UNESCO World Heritage List. According to Mr. Siraj Haj, D. G. of Culture and Sports in the Anseba region indicated that the region is endowed with unique tangible and intangible heritage and that sustainable research has been conducted to identify them and priority has been given to the city of Keren. Mr. Siraj pointed out that a task force composed of experts has been established and that the first phase of the research has started. He also said that the experience undertaken to put Asmara in the UNESCO World Heritage List is significantly contributing to the effort. Mr. Siraj went on to say that Keren city possesses ancient buildings from the time of the Turkish Empire and Italian colonialism. Similar buildings also exist in Asmara and Massawa, Mr. Siraj added. Commending the understanding the Eritrean people have in the importance of preserving ancient and historical heritage, Mr. Siraj said that heritage are the foundation of identity and called for proper attention.

Africa World Heritage Day was observed on 2 May here in the capital, Asmara, under the theme “Heritage and Innovation”. At the event in which government officials, representatives of UN offices in Eritrea took part, the D. G. of Public Works Development in the Central region, Architect Tesfa’alem Woldemicael indicated that the UNESCO General Assembly dedicated May 5 to the observance of the Africa World Heritage Day and that has significant meaning. Indicating that Eritrea possesses cultural and natural heritage that have international significance, Architect Tesfa’alem said that Eritrea has signed in the three International Conventions for the development and preservation of  cultural and natural heritage, namely preservation of Cultural Heritage during conflicts 1954, World Heritage Accord 1972 and Intangible Cultural Heritage 2003. Ms. Susan Ngongi, UN Resident Humanitarian Coordinator, on her part said that while Africa is still under represented on the UNESCO World Heritage List a disproportionally high percentage of these properties are on the list of World Heritage in danger. Ms. Susan went on to say that through the international day, UNESCO aims to increase global awareness of African heritage, with a special focus on youth, and to mobilize enhanced cooperation for its safeguarding on the local, regional and global level. She also said that Eritrea signed the UNESCO World Heritage Convention in 2001and with that the Government of Eritrea has made a commitment to identify and protect its natural and cultural heritage to ensure its safeguarding for future generations. Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Zerit Tewoldebrhan, Managing Director in the Central region, called for integrated effort for documenting the undocumented cultural and natural heritage in the country.
