'I feel even safer now': Ang Mo Kio residents welcome new 'Friendly Streets' with raised zebra crossings

The new raised zebra crossing on Ang Mo Kio Street 31 is good news for residents like Lim. The 64-year-old facility manager is partially blind due to an operation on his right eye 30 years ago. «I can't really see oncoming traffic that well,» Lim, who declined to give his full name, told AsiaOne on Thursday (July 18). «Since the zebra crossing has a hump that forces vehicles to slow down, I feel even safer while crossing the road now.» The raised zebra crossing is one of the new pedestrian-friendly features in Ang Mo Kio — the first to be completed out of the five locations under the Land Transport Authority's (LTA) Friendly Streets initiative. In an Instagram post on Monday (July 15), the LTA said that other amenities include reduced traffic speed limits, green road markings to alert motorists to slow down ahead of traffic lights, and kerbless crossings. They added that works in the other locations — in Bukit Batok West, Tampines, Toa Payoh and West Coast — are ongoing and will be progressively completed from the third quarter of 2024.

Conserved bungalow used for filming Mediacorp drama redecorated without necessary approval: URA

SINGAPORE — National broadcaster Mediacorp recently redecorated a conserved bungalow for filming without first getting necessary permission from the authorities, The Straits Times has learnt. The works, which included the repainting of part of the building's facade, were done on a bungalow near Mount Faber that Mediacorp had rented to shoot scenes for its upcoming series Emerald Hill — a spin-off of the hit Chinese drama The Little Nonya. Mediacorp had also replaced the building's windows and embellished its facade with what looked like ornamental tiles. The changes came to light after Mediacorp hosted a tour of the set for the media on June 7. The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) then inspected the site on June 18, following feedback from a member of the heritage conservation community. While URA — Singapore's conservation authority — allowed the changes on the basis that they were «superficial in nature» and did not affect the building's original condition, it reminded Mediacorp that permission had to be sought for such works. The broadcaster was otherwise not penalised for the work it had done without permission.

$500k gone: 'Forex fund manager' goes MIA, at least 10 people affected

Wanting to help her father grow his pension funds, a woman decided to heed the advice of a forex fund manager, who claimed his investment fund provides a daily return of one per cent. But several months later, the fund manager started evading her queries, leaving the woman with no way to withdraw the rest of her investment funds.  At least 10 people — including the woman — had engaged the same forex fund manager, with the collective sum invested believed to be at least $500,000, reported Shin Min Daily News. The woman surnamed Xu, 40, said a friend had introduced her to the man, Li Shipeng (transliteration), who claimed to be a forex fund manager. He persuaded them to invest with him and Xu put in $56,758 from March to November 2022. According to Xu, she had already been paid $18,750 in interest. But after Li became uncontactable, she said she is unable to recover her capital.

A Somali-American former investigator: why you’re hearing about fraud in my community

The Minnesota Attorney General’s Office, where I previously worked as a fraud investigator, announced last year its largest ever Medicaid fraud case, charging 18 people with stealing $9.5 million. Not long after, the AG charged three people with stealing nearly $11 million, again in Medicaid funds. In May, eight were charged with defrauding Medicaid of $2.6 million. Last month, the AG charged five people with stealing more than $10 million. These cases — all charged in the past year — carry a combined dollar amount greater than the sum of all 261 criminal convictions for Medicaid fraud secured by the attorney general since October 2018.

Briefing - Recovery and Resilience Facility implementation: Digital public services - 18-07-2024

This briefing tracks progress made in implementing digital measures under the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). The RRF is at the core of Next Generation EU, the unprecedented recovery instrument helping EU Member States address the socioeconomic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Digital transformation is one of the RRF's six pillars and a shared priority for the EU. The RRF dedicates 26 % of its overall funding to digital objectives in various digital policy areas, of which digital public services is the largest. Digitalising public administration is a major challenge across the EU and a 2030 target of the EU's digital decade. The current EU objective is to ensure that by 2030 all key public services are fully accessible online for everyone, including persons with disabilities. Key public services should also comply with high security and privacy standards. The national recovery and resilience plans, which Member States prepared to be able to benefit from RRF financing, include various measures supporting the digitalisation of public services and e-government, both reforms and investments. These account for more than a third of RRF-funded digital expenditure (37 % of the digital transformation pillar, or around €53 billion) and are the most supported digital policy area. The reforms seek mainly to establish the legal basis needed to enable digitalisation. The investments are aimed at modernising public administration processes in order to make them more user-friendly, interoperable and accessible, and to boost their uptake by citizens and businesses. Implementation of these measures, as of the RRF in general, is under way and gaining speed. Referring to preliminary positive assessments of payment requests, this briefing looks into some examples of milestones and targets that have been reported and assessed as fulfilled. Though not exhaustive, the examples offer an indication of what has already been carried out across Member States in the first half of the RRF's lifetime. The European Parliament plays an important role in ensuring the transparency and democratic scrutiny of the RRF implementation process, addressing key issues regularly in its resolutions.
