Maserati driver gets a week in jail for hurling racial slur at off-duty cop during Hari Raya

A day of celebrating Hari Raya Puasa for an off-duty police officer and his family was marred after they got into a dispute with a man who hurled a racial insult at him. Walter Goh Chong Han, 43, was jailed for seven days on Friday (Nov 27) for deliberately wounding the racial feelings of the officer, and using insulting words that caused him distress. Goh had pleaded guilty to his offences on Thursday. On June 6 last year, the 51-year-old police officer, who is not named in court documents, and his family went out to do some visiting as it was the second day of Hari Raya Puasa. He drove to a petrol station in Punggol Central and joined the car queue at the petrol pumps. Goh later entered the petrol station and stopped his car — a green Maserati — behind the police officer's vehicle. Deputy Public Prosecutor Lim Ying Min said the officer heard a horn from behind, but did not know why Goh had sounded his horn and ignored him. As Goh was unable to overtake the officer's car on the right, he drove to its left, said the DPP. He then stopped and opened his door, causing a dent on the side of the other car.

Wage woes: Some local employers plan to scrap staff bonuses this year

Some employers in the private sector plan to not pay any bonuses to their staff this year. This is similar to the Government announcing there would be no bonus paid to civil servants at the year's end, given the weakened economic outlook caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Others, however, are still going ahead with plans to pay their staff a bonus on top of the annual wage supplement, or 13th month bonus. Mr Nick Lee, director of IT services firm AIT Technologies, said his firm has been making a loss this year as client projects were delayed amid the coronavirus outbreak. He will not be able to pay his staff an annual bonus or the 13th month bonus. «We already had to let go of two people earlier this year, but the majority of our staff have not had their salaries cut. Saving our company is the priority now,» he said. Dr Kevin Cheong, executive director of local attraction Sentosa 4D AdventureLand, also said it would not be possible for him to pay a bonus to staff. «With as good as half the year's income wiped out overnight, all of us are struggling, even after we have reopened our doors to visitors.»

He became Singapore's first locally transmitted and unlinked Covid-19 case in 16 days. Eric Khoo's son goes back in time with short film Video Store at ciNE65 2021 launch

Going to the video stores was fun and «a bright kind of moment in my childhood that I felt compelled to capture», 26-year-old Edward Khoo recalls fondly. Video Store, one of the three commissioned short films screened at ciNE65 2021's launch at Singapore Discovery Centre today (Nov 27), is Khoo's homage to his childhood memories of frequenting video stores with his father, veteran film-maker Eric Khoo. He also attributed it to the beginning of his passion for film-making. In the three-minute film, the main character, Sofie, reminisces about conversations she had with customers who have come and gone through the years of her time growing up in her mother's video store.  Reflecting on his choice of the setting of a brick-and-mortar video store, a rare sight in Singapore nowadays, Khoo told AsiaOne that he believes that such physical spaces provide a community for people to «come together over a shared interest in films», where they are able to go beyond the easy access of on-demand films, and «not rely on algorithms to recommend [them films]».

Questionable job, embellished illnesses? Woman suing PUB for $5m gives up after lawyers accuse her of numerous lies

She had asked for $20 million in damages before adjusting her claim to $5 million. Now, there's a possibility that the costs of her lawsuit against the Public Utilities Board (PUB) could eat into her damages. Chan Hui Peng, 47, who took PUB to court after falling into a manhole in 2015, accepted a confidential settlement offer from the statutory board's lawyers on Thursday evening (Nov 26), lawyers from both sides told reporters. Just that morning, she had told the High Court that her claim was «honest and legitimate» and confirmed that she would be pursuing it. Following both parties' appearance before Judicial Commissioner Andre Maniam this morning to address the issue of costs, Chan is expected to file a notice of discontinuance against PUB, officially withdrawing her claim. Chan chose to accept the offer as the trial, which commenced on Monday, has «taken a toll on her mental health and emotional well-being», her lawyer Ivan Lee told The Straits Times.
