Core inflation rises to 1.4% in February, import cost pressures likely to pick up: MAS, MTI

Singapore's core inflation rose to 1.4 per cent year-on-year in February, up from 1.0 per cent in January, said the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) in a press release on Monday (March 23). February's core inflation is the highest since 1.7 per cent was recorded in December 2024. Core inflation was particularly boosted by higher inflation in services, food, and retail and other goods, partly reflecting seasonal effects associated with the Chinese New Year in February, said MAS and MTI.On a month-on-month basis, core prices increased by 0.5 per cent in February.Separately, overall inflation — which excludes all non-consumption expenditures such as purchases of houses, shares and other financial assets — fell to 1.2 per cent year-on-year in February from 1.4 per cent, on the back of lower accommodation and private transport inflation that more than offset higher core inflation. Sector-wise, MAS and MTI noted that accommodation inflation eased from 1.9 per cent in January to 0.3 per cent in February, due to a smaller increase in the cost of housing maintenance and repairs.

Some records shouldn't be broken, especially when Singapore is already hot enough. Several of Singapore's weather records were matched or broken in 2025, the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) stated in their Annual Climate Assessment Report released on Monday (March 23). June 2025 was Singapore's warmest June since 1929, tied with 1997. November was also Singapore's warmest November since 1929.And the highest-ever November temperature of 36.0 deg C was recorded at Newton on Nov 1, during an exceptionally warm and dry period, surpassing the previous record of 35.8 dec C.  Singapore's average temperature in 2025 was 28.1 deg C, making it the joint 8th warmest year on record alongside 2010 and 2002. «This reflects the influence of the ongoing long-term warming trend globally and Singapore,» said MSS.The country's annual mean temperature has risen by 0.24 deg C per decade since 1984. Singapore also experienced its wettest March in 2025 due to La Nina conditions and north-east monsoon surges at the start of the year.

Briefing - 'Safe country of origin' concept in EU asylum law - 23-03-2026

European Union Member States have a shared responsibility to give protection to asylum-seekers, to ensure they receive fair treatment and their cases are examined according to uniform standards. The common European asylum system (CEAS) establishes common standards for Member State procedures for granting and withdrawing international protection. A critical aspect of a common approach to international protection is the application of the 'safe country of origin' concept. In the context of refugees, the term 'safe country of origin' (SCO) has been used to refer to countries whose citizens should not, in theory, be granted international protection, since those countries are widely regarded as safe. The concept can refer to the automatic exclusion from refugee status of nationals originating from SCOs, or it can raise a presumption of safety that those nationals must rebut. Several international and regional human rights bodies have either raised concerns about the use of the SCO concept or proposed appropriate safeguards to ensure that the fundamental rights of persons in genuine need of international protection, but who originate from SCOs, are respected. At EU level, the concept has gradually developed as part of the CEAS, culminating in the adoption of the provisions on the common EU list of SCOs. Many Member States have already established national SCO lists. With the new asylum legislation, transposition of the SCO concept will be mandatory for all Member States, which will also be able to retain or introduce national SCO lists other than those designated at EU level. This is an update of a 2025 EPRS briefing. Source : © European Union, 2026 - EP
