Check-ins for most airlines affected by global tech outage at Changi Airport back to normal

SINGAPORE - Check-in operations for most airlines at Changi Airport that were hit by a global technology outage on July 19 have returned to normal, though snaking queues were still seen at AirAsia’s counters. In a Facebook update on the morning of July 20, operator Changi Airport Group (CAG) said a “small number” of airlines still need check-ins to be done manually. CAG added: “Changi Airport is supporting these airlines with additional resources. For passengers affected, we seek your patience and understanding.” AirAsia’s services are among those disrupted. The Straits Times saw long queues at the budget carrier’s counters at Changi Airport Terminal 4 on the morning of July 20, as check-ins had to be handled manually. Airlines were among the hardest hit by the tech outage, which is believed to be caused by a flawed software update issued by cyber-security service provider CrowdStrike. The US firm serves tens of thousands of enterprises globally, including banks, offices and hospitals.

Maid stole over $28k using ATM card belonging to 83-year-old employer with dementia, gets jail

A domestic worker was sentenced to one year in jail on Thursday (July 18) for stealing more than $28,000 from her elderly employee with dementia. Indonesian national Sriatun, 45, had pleaded guilty to one charge of theft as a servant, The Straits Times reported. Another charge of theft, for stealing her employer's ATM card, was taken into consideration during sentencing. The court heard that Sriatun, who goes by one name, had been working for the employer for two years. After learning about his POSB bank account's ATM personal identification number, Sriatun stole his card 19 times and made 36 withdrawals between Jan 14 and Sept 24 last year. She would return the card to her employer to avoid detection. But in November 2023, the man's son saw a letter of demand from the town council on outstanding service and conservancy charges. He suspected something was amiss since the payments were usually made through Giro. He lodged a police report after seeing the multiple cash withdrawals. Sriatun allegedly remitted $11,000 to her family in Indonesia and spent the remaining $17,050 on personal expenses.

July 20: Seychelles faces Mozambique in Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations 2024 qualifier

The Seychelles' beach soccer national team hopes to pull off a shock result against Mozambique on Saturday when it takes on one of Africa's strongest sides at the local Beach Soccer Arena. The team has been training intensively in recent weeks as it prepares to seek a qualification spot in the CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations 2024 (AFCON) and head coach Herald Kowlessur said that the team is looking for a win. «We have played against Mozambique before and the results were not good, but we are hoping that this is not the case again and we want to come out and play to get a win,» said Kowlessur. The head coach is asking supporters to come and help  the players in an attempt to get a victory. The match will take place at 6 p.m. at the Beach Soccer Arena in the central district of Roche Caiman. The second leg will take place in Mozambique a week later. The team is currently in a training camp with full time preparations and the coach says everything is going well and the players are in good form ahead of Saturday's game. Earlier this week, the team was briefed by a referee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and coach Kowlessur explained that this was to ensure the players stay updated with the ever-changing rules of the game. «We brought the referee to share his experience and let the players know what they can expect from the referees in this match,» said Kowlessur. Seychelles will be captained by Mike Balette, who shared that the team is a mix of young and experienced players and feels they have enough about them to get a good result. «We are taking this match seriously, especially as we are playing in front of our fans and we have prepared well and will be looking for a good match,» said Balette. Stephen Lajoie, who is part of the team, said they are ready to show what they are capable of. «We want all supporters to come and give us support, where when we see our people cheering us on, it will give us the determination to do well,» he added. The winners of each edition of the Beach Soccer AFCON, launched in 2006, qualify for the African nations in the upcoming FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup. Seychelles, an archipelago in the western Indian Ocean, has already qualified as it will host the next tournament in 2025. Senegal is the most successful nation in this competition and in the World Cup qualifications. The Western African country has won seven titles, including the latest one in 2022, and qualified with nine out of 11 attempts. Nigeria follows closely with six qualifications. Seychelles competed in the qualifiers for the tournament in 2022 in Mozambique and lost 11-4 on aggregate to Madagascar. The 2024 edition of the tournament will take place in Egypt.

Global tech outage: Some in Singapore stuck at carparks, others get logged out of computer systems

SINGAPORE - Motorists were stuck at carparks - some for as long as 20 minutes - when electronic gantries stopped working, while many others found themselves logged out of their computer systems when a major global technology outage hit on July 19. It was not all bad, though, with some deciding to call it a day and start their weekend early. Freelance writer Allyson Thomas, 50, and her husband sat in their car in Toa Payoh for about 20 minutes while waiting for the carpark gantry barrier to be lifted. Repeated calls to the carpark operator went unanswered. Islandwide, nearly 200 carparks were affected. Eventually, an employee from carpark operator Wilson Parking arrived to rescue them. He explained that he had to rush to release more gantries, said Ms Thomas, who added: «I can't imagine how many he must have had to go to today.» Roughly 185 carparks, or 10 per cent of all carparks, in Housing Board estates were affected by the outage, HDB said in a Facebook post.

PMD user almost gets hit by bus after beating red pedestrian traffic light in Yishun

A personal mobility device (PMD) user was almost hit by a bus while running a red light. The near-miss happened along Yishun Avenue 6, according to a post by Facebook group Beh Chia Lor on Friday (July 19). The 40-second clip first showed an e-scooter rider waiting at the pedestrian crossing, before deciding to make a dash even though the red pedestrian traffic light was still on. But the man was forced to brake abruptly to avoid an approaching double-decker bus. He then stumbled backwards, causing his e-scooter to hit the road. Seemingly unfazed by the heavy traffic, the man picked up his damaged scooter and belongings - before making his way across the road. After dropping his scooter onto the footpath, he later ran back onto the road to pick up several broken parts from his vehicle. Blood appeared to trickle down his face. The video has since garnered more than 350,000 views, with many netizens angered by the man's reckless act. «A total disregard for traffic rules,» one of them said, while another felt that the PMD rider was lucky to be alive.
