Seychelles sends condolences after Cyclone Chido and Vanuatu earthquake

The Seychelles’ government has expressed condolences and solidarity with nations affected by Cyclone Chido and the recent earthquake in Vanuatu, emphasising international unity in the face of these devastating natural disasters. Cyclone Chido has wreaked havoc across Mayotte and southern Africa.  The search for missing persons continues in Mayotte, a French overseas territory in the Indian Ocean, after Cyclone Chido devastated the islands on Saturday. The storm later swept through south-eastern Africa, where the death toll continues to climb in Mozambique and Malawi.  Large areas of Mayotte’s main island, Grande-Terre, remain inaccessible, with roads, internet, phone networks, electricity, and water supplies severely disrupted.  Official reports confirm that 22 people lost their lives in Mayotte, with over 1,300 injured. However, local officials fear the death toll could reach into the thousands. The Red Cross reported on Tuesday that 200 of its volunteers are missing. In northern Mozambique, authorities reported 45 fatalities and the destruction of 23,600 homes.  Seychelles' message to Mayotte  Sylvestre Radegonde, the Seychelles’ Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, addressed a message of condolence to Ben Issa Ousseni, the President of the Departmental Council of Mayotte.  The message conveyed deep sorrow and solidarity, saying that “It is with profound sadness and great sorrow that the Seychellois people and I learned of the tragic news of Cyclone Chido’s passage through Mayotte, which caused numerous victims and enormous damage. On behalf of the Seychellois people, the government, and myself, I extend heartfelt condolences to you, the families of the victims, and all the people of Mayotte.”  The message also wished a swift recovery for the injured and reaffirmed Seychelles' enduring friendship and solidarity with Mayotte.  Support for Mozambique Seychelles' President Wavel Ramkalawan has extended condolences to Mozambique’s President, Filipe Nyusi, in the aftermath of Cyclone Chido’s devastation in the region.  “It is with profound sadness that I learnt of the devastating impact of tropical cyclone Chido, which has resulted in the loss of lives and destruction to homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods in several parts of your country,” President Ramkalawan said.  He praised Mozambique’s swift relief efforts and expressed confidence in the resilience of its people.  “Our thoughts and prayers are with the communities directly impacted by this natural disaster. The Government and the People of Seychelles stand in solidarity with Mozambique during this difficult time.”  Earthquake devastates Vanuatu  Vanuatu officials reported on Thursday that the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Vanuatu, an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, two days earlier claimed at least 14 lives, including one French and two Chinese nationals, and left hundreds injured. The quake caused widespread destruction in Port Vila, Vanuatu’s capital.  Following the disaster, President Wavel Ramkalawan conveyed sympathy to President Nikenike Vurobaravu.  “It is with profound sorrow that I learnt of the devastating earthquake that struck Vanuatu’s capital, Port Vila, causing extensive damage to properties and essential infrastructure, loss of lives, and overwhelming suffering to the people of Vanuatu,” Ramkalawan stated.  He commended the efforts of Vanuatu’s government, humanitarian agencies, and local communities in rescuing survivors and restoring essential services.  “During this difficult period, Seychelles stands in solidarity with the Republic of Vanuatu. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Vanuatu during this challenging time.”

End of an era: After 10 years of operation, Seychelles News Agency to go offline on Jan. 1, 2025

Following the decision of the Seychellois government and the National Information Services Agency (NISA), as of December 19, 2024, the Seychelles News Agency (SNA) will cease its daily journalistic operations.  The website www.seychellesnewsagency.com will no longer function as of January 1, 2025.  On October 4, the Vice President’s office issued a press release saying that the government had taken a decision to merge the activities of the SNA into the NISA that publishes the Seychelles Nation newspaper, which has an online subscription service and a printed paper, while SNA had free news access online.  “This follows government’s vision of streamlining all its activities and taking into account the fast pace at which modern media is now evolving,” said Vice President Ahmed Afif.  The statement explained that SNA and NISA had been briefed over this decision and “will work out the manner for the integration to happen by December 2024.”  However, following discussions, the board of NISA took the decision not to continue the operations of SNA, as the government had decided not to provide funding for its eight existing staff.  In late November, two job offers were made to SNA staff to work for the Seychelles Nation newspaper, which have not been taken up by any former SNA journalists and editors, who feel deeply aggrieved by the sudden turn of events.  To date, it has not made clear publicly as to why the decision was made to discontinue the funding of the state’s news agency and close it.  Meanwhile, the Association of Media Practitioners of Seychelles (AMPS) expressed its concern about the closing down of the agency in a press release in November, adding “that closing down SNA is shrinking the already small media landscape of Seychelles.”  All other Seychelles print and online news media are available only by paid subscription, therefore, the closure of SNA signals the free access to information online in English and French.  The Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation remains the only other free online source of information in Seychellois Creole, English and French TV news on its YouTube channel and social media. Since its launch in April 2014 in the Department of Information, the Seychelles News Agency has played a crucial role in covering and disseminating local and international news, informing both the local public and international audiences, being cited by major international broadcasters, news agencies and newspapers worldwide. It was the first online news agency of the small island state.

Young entrepreneurs fair planned for CJSOI Games in Seychelles in 2025

An entrepreneurs fair regrouping young people from the Indian Ocean countries will be part of the Indian Ocean Youth and Sport Commission (CJSOI) Games that are expected to be held in Seychelles next year.  The fair will be part of the youth programme  of the games, which also features sporting events to be held from July 28 to August 10. The entrepreneurs fair will be organised by the Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC), a member of the local organising committee of the CJSOI.  Josette Cadence of the SNYC told SNA that the event would allow young people not only to showcase their services and products but also to meet entrepreneurs from other islands and share ideas. «The fair will be opened for young people from the Indian Ocean aged 18-30 years. All participating countries are expected to bring two young entrepreneurs to participate except for Seychelles because, as the host country, we will have more participants,» added Cadence. Whilst the committee is yet to decide on the format and location of the event, young Seychellois entrepreneurs are being encouraged to prepare for the event, which may give them opportunities to grow and expand. «It is so important for youths to network and share experiences and potentially open new markets,» said Albert Duncan, the chief executive officer of the SNYC, stressing that youth development in entrepreneurship features highly on the council's portfolio. Apart from the business fair, other components of the youth programme of the CJSOI include traditional cultural exchanges. The CJSOI Games are held every two years, and were introduced in 1994  with the objective to promote friendship ties between young people from member states and foster regional cooperation, sporting culture and the development of young people. The member states of CJSOI include Comoros, Djibouti, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte, Reunion Island and Seychelles. Seychelles is getting ready to host the Games, which will also include 11 sporting events, namely judo, badminton, athletics, swimming, boxing, volleyball, football, basketball, sailing, beach soccer and weightlifting. There are plans for renovation on some key infrastructures needed for the smooth hosting of the CJSOI games. These include the main stadium of Stad Linite as well as the Palais des Sports for basketball and volleyball, and the swimming pool - all located at the Roche Caiman Sports Complex. The 13th edition of the CJSOI game is the third time that Seychelles is hosting the games, after 1999 and 2008. The last Games that were held in Mauritius in 2022, Seychelles finished in third place with 45 medals, 12 gold, 12 silver, and 21 bronze. The winner of the event was Reunion, an overseas French Department, with 142 medals, 57 gold, 56 silver and 29 bronze. Mauritius was second with 138 medals - 46 gold, 44 silver and 48 bronze.
