Family move out overnight after landlord gives them ultimatum over $6,800 in rent owed

A family of four owed their landlord $6,800 in rent and were given two days to pay the amount owed. But they packed up their belongings and moved out overnight. In an interview with Shin Min Daily News, the landlord, surnamed Li, had rented out his two-bedroom condominium unit in Yishun to the Singaporean family. A two-year lease was signed in December 2023, with a monthly rent of $4,300. The family was punctual with their payments for the first three months of the lease before they began to fall behind. According to Li, they would pay varying amounts each month, giving a range of excuses to his property agent. By Oct 19, the family owed Li a total of $6,800. Frustrated with the situation, the landlord instructed his property agent to give the family an ultimatum to pay the full sum by Oct 21 if they wanted to continue living in the unit. The tenants seemed amenable to the deadline and agreed to pay their debts. However, the family failed to make any payment when the deadline rolled over. They also moved out of the unit overnight. Li's property agent made a police report after failing to contact the family.

Oil spill during bunkering operation off Changi on Oct 28

SINGAPORE - An oil spill took place off Changi on Oct 28 during a bunkering operation between a Bahamas-flagged bulk carrier and a licensed bunker tanker. In a statement sent in the wee hours of Tuesday (Oct 29), the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said the incident reportedly occurred at 5.40pm and the bunkering operation ceased immediately. According to information found on the agency's website, bunkering is the process of supplying fuels to ships for their own use, and Singapore is one of the largest and most important bunkering ports in the world. MPA said its craft arrived at the scene of the incident at around 5.50pm and sprayed dispersants. Dispersants are chemicals that break up oil into smaller droplets, which can be mixed with water. There is no impact on navigational traffic, and relevant government agencies have been alerted to keep a lookout for oil sightings along local shores, said the agency. This is the third incident involving an oil leak or spill to take place in Singapore waters since June.

Halloween horrors? Festive decor along HDB corridor sparks online debate

Some residents at an undisclosed HDB estate have gotten into the spirit of the spooky season by putting up their very own Halloween decorations at their doorstep but not everyone has gotten into the spirit. A now-deleted video showcasing the ghoulish decor along the common corridor made its rounds on Reddit earlier on Monday (Oct 28), sparking debate among netizens.  The clip showed an area decked out with various Halloween props such as fake dismembered limbs, as well as spiders and cobwebs hanging from the ceiling and strewn across the floor. Fake knives, cloth bloodied with fake handprints and warning tape were also draped across the ceiling. Several netizens criticised the scary displays, saying that the decorations could be a fire hazard or cause inconvenience to wheelchair-bound residents. «Neighbours would be running an obstacle course daily (sic),» wrote one netizen.

Fatal Clementi stabbing: Suspect who allegedly killed grassroots volunteer brought back to crime scene

A 50-year-old who allegedly killed a grassroots volunteer was brought back to the crime scene at Clementi Ave 4 by police on Monday (Oct 28). Toh Chee Hong was charged with the murder of 41-year-old Winson Khoo last Wednesday after being arrested on scene following the incident last Monday evening. Khoo and Toh are known to each other, according to preliminary investigations by the police. Toh arrived at the roundabout below Blocks 311B and 311C just before 10.20am, alighting from a black police van with four police officers. The police had cordoned off the area spanning the playground, void deck, car park and roundabout below Blocks 311B and 311C, preventing passers-by from entering the area. He had reportedly stabbed the victim repeatedly with a small object at the foot of Block 311B. Toh, unshaven and unkempt, kept his head down as he was escorted from the drop-off point under Block 311B to the lift lobby of Block 311C, where he was brought up to a unit on the 19th floor.  The block is part of Trivelis, a HDB development under the Design, Build and Sell Scheme where the lift lobbies are gated.

Swizzyinsg, whose real name is Marion Müller, posted a 29-second video on Oct 17 with the disclaimer: «I am not saying the food does not taste good, it is just not what you would consider Swiss food!» She said in the video: «They said it's a Swiss restaurant, but all these are not Swiss food.» The expat showed the Spanish paella and French crepes sold in the restaurant. «The next thing I saw was seafood pasta, which actually looked pretty good, but in a Swiss restaurant?» she asked. «Garlic chilli prawns on pizza is definitely not Swiss either.» But all was not lost. «Then I was so happy to find Swiss rösti, which they make from scratch,» said Müller. «But you would never eat it with sour cream. »The only really authentic thing was the Mövenpick ice cream and these wooden chairs. You would find these exactly in Switzerland."

MOH to integrate TCM into Healthier SG as 'preventative care': Ong Ye Kung

The Ministry of Health (MOH) aims to include traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in its Healthier SG initiative to provide «preventative care» alongside western medicine. Speaking at the Public Free Clinic Society's (PFCS) 50th anniversary charity dinner on Sunday (Oct 27), Health Minister Ong Ye Kung highlighted the importance of TCM as a «holistic approach to health». Integrating TCM into Healthier SG is not a decision for the government or western doctors to make as it is already done by many Singaporeans who are choosing TCM, said Ong. «Our job is to synergise the efforts between Healthier SG and TCM and ensure that high quality and appropriate preventive care is delivered to as many Singaporeans as possible.» While over one million people are currently enrolled in Healthier SG, this number is less than 50 per cent of MOH's targeted population, he noted. Additionally, the enrolment rate among those aged between 40 and 59 is one-third, which Ong said can be improved.

Woon Ban Chee, 22, was taking the trash out from his Teck Whye flat on Oct 18, when he accidentally tossed his $2,900 mobile phone out.  «I only realised it a few minutes later,» said Woon in an interview with AsiaOne on Monday (Oct 28). «I was like, 'Did I just throw my phone away?'» Woon, who recently resigned from his full-time job as a waiter to care for his sick mother, frantically called Chua Chu Kang Town Council and the waste disposal company for help. «I panicked the whole night,» he said. «I went to the Apple Store on Orchard Road to see if I can get a replacement,» he said. «But they didn't allow me to get a new one.» Woon was reunited with his phone when eagle-eyed workers from the e-waste recycling firm Alba spotted the device while searching through the trash at their Tuas plant. «[There were] no scratches and dents. The case was very smelly, so I threw it away. Everything else is normal,» said the young man. «I now clean my phone with alcohol wipes every day. It's a lesson learnt.»

SINGAPORE — Diners who are keen to buy unsold food from eateries at up to 80 per cent off the retail price before closing time, instead of letting it go to waste, can tap a new mobile phone application. The new app, called Yindii, was launched in August and aims to beef up efforts to reduce food waste by eateries. Customers who use the app can order a «surprise bag» in advance, and they can get any type of unsold food from the menu at day's end for between 50 per cent and 80 per cent off the usual retail price. The app touts itself as a «high-quality food surplus marketplace», and it already has tie-ups with popular restaurants, cafes and bakeries, including Paul, Baker & Cook and SaladStop!. Founded in 2020, the app is also available in Hong Kong and Thailand. Yindii co-founder and chief marketing officer Mahima Rajangam Natarajan said: «We chose to launch in Singapore because it's a forward-thinking city with a growing focus on sustainability and reducing food waste.»

'Good community spirit': Resident applauds passers-by for helping police subdue suspect in Bukit Merah

When it comes to keeping the neighbourhood safe, sometimes a little help from the neighbourhood itself goes a long way. With the help of passers-by in the area, the police managed to subdue a suspect outside Block 107 Jalan Bukit Merah, earning the praise of a resident, according to a video uploaded to TikTok on Wednesday (Oct 23). In the video, approximately five men can be seen working alongside officers to hold down an individual, pressing him to the ground.  While the officers secure the torso of the suspect, the passers-by pin down his legs, preventing movement. One individual even hops the fence to get a better angle, using his knees and body weight to push the man down. «Another good example of good community spirit,» a resident can be heard narrating as he films the incident. «A group of quick-thinking residents and workers have helped to subdue a violent man.» He adds that the police response to this situation was «swift» and «professional», and that an ambulance was also called. Once the man is placed in handcuffs, the passers-by then disperse, standing at the sides and letting officers do their work.

Two weeks ago, local video game streamer Julynn Lau announced that she was engaged to her partner Benjamin Loh. The scene was picturesque, with the proposal taking place at night on a beach with candles and a light-up sign reading «Marry Me» behind them. There was also a drone display with hearts and the silhouette of a man proposing to a woman in the sky. https://www.instagram.com/p/DA8qZ6dz8Do/ However, in a video uploaded Oct 24 on Instagram and TikTok, she shared more about what really went on behind-the-scenes with the unnamed photography crew hired to shoot it. «POV: Your photographer thinks she's the main character of the proposal and missed the most important part of the engagement,» the in-video caption reads. As the couple looks up at the sky, presumably to see the drone display which is out of frame, a voice can be heard saying: «You can just kneel down already, kneel down.» A male and a female voices continue talking in the background and when Loh asks Lau if she'll marry him, the man can be heard saying: «Wide shot, wide shot, wide shot.»

A coffee shop in Kembangan has come under scrutiny online for its tray collection point overflowing with dirty dishes, stirring debate over who was at fault. One resident, however, has claimed that the incident is an isolated one as the cleaner was unwell that day. In a post made on Friday (Oct 25) to the Complaint Singapore Facebook page, user Valentine Ong shared a photo of the situation at a coffee shop at Blk 110 Lengkong Tiga. The collection point, which was nearing capacity, had more than a dozen dirty dishes stacked haphazardly around it on the floor. «This is first-world mentality,» wrote Ong in the post, which appeared to chastise patrons for their behaviour. It also sparked a discussion among commenters on who was to blame. Some believed that it was the responsibility of the coffee shop to clear the collection point since it was full. «Well at least they [the patrons] walked themselves from the table to the collection point... it's the coffee shop's business, none of our business,» one user wrote.

Ex-offenders learn to use Singpass, PayNow, apps in reintegration to society

SINGAPORE - When Mr Johann left prison in late 2017 after almost four years behind bars, he was surprised to see self-checkout counters at a FairPrice supermarket. In early 2014, he remembered supermarket outlets having only manned cashier stations. Mr Johann, who wanted to be known by only his first name, said he was at a loss until facilitators from Project ReConnect showed him how to use the machines. The project is an initiative by the Industrial and Services Co-operative Society Limited (Iscos), which helps former offenders and their families in their reintegration process. Simple acts like using a handheld scanner and making cashless payments intimidated Mr Johann. Referring to new technology, the 45-year-old, who is now a truck driver, said: «I had a fear of using it, so what they showed me was very helpful.» He is one of over 2,300 former offenders who have joined Project ReConnect since its launch in 2017. It teaches former inmates, who have been in jail for more than three years, about government initiatives and practical matters, such as using Singpass and navigating the public transport system.

'I feel there is hope': Stateless youth who has never gone to school receives offers of help, lands a job

Stateless youth Ricqo Rafiezuwan once likened his existence to that of a ghost – his presence known to and noticed by only a few people. Without formal education, jobless and strapped for cash, the 25-year-old felt inferior. He rarely left the Clementi estate, where he lives and grew up, and has never stepped out of Singapore. That changed after The Straits Times reported in September on the challenges he and two other stateless individuals faced living here without citizenship or permanent residency, from rules that prevented them from opening bank accounts to uncertainty over healthcare provisions. After struggling for months to secure employment because of his residency status, Mr Rafiezuwan said he will start work in November as an operation executive for co-living operator The Assembly Place, which rents out accommodation with communal facilities. The report sparked an outpouring of support – from offers of help with the English language and training to jobs and meals at restaurants.

New flavour? Woman finds char siew filling in BreadTalk coffee bun

When she purchased a coffee-flavoured bun, she may have expected it well-roasted - but probably not like this. A customer was left confused after she found char siew filling inside a coffee bun she bought from BreadTalk, according to a post on Complaint Singapore on Wednesday (Oct 23) by user Elle Min. «BreadTalk has a new bun?» Min questioned in her post. «I got their coffee bread, my favourite. But I got [the bread] with roast pork inside?» In photographs attached to the post, Min showed the pertinent bread roll: a bun with a layer of brown coffee coating the upper half of the bread. Instead of the usual buttery interior, however, this bun had quite a bit more meat to it - literally, as clumps of char siew can be seen glistening inside. «I emailed [BreadTalk] and asked,» Min wrote. «No reply. Asked the manager, [they were] confused and asked for the photo... Anyone know [about this bun]?» 'Free meat' Some users on Hardware Zone forum felt that this was a blessing in disguise. «Free meat. Isn't that a win?» A user said. «Seems quite sedap (delicious),» another added.

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has deployed a Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) C-130 military transport aircraft to the Philippines, to provide airlift support to deliver humanitarian aid supplies to communities affected by Tropical Storm Trami.  The deployment is at the request of the Philippines government. Typhoon Trami made landfall in the Philippines on Thursday (Oct 24).  At least 76 people have been killed with tens of thousands displaced from their homes, the AFP reported. The SAF’s contributions underscores the warm and friendly bilateral and defence ties and close humanitarian assistance and disaster relief cooperation between Singapore and the Philippines.  Back in August, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam visited Philippines in August at the invitation of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. His visit commemorates the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Singapore.

SINGAPORE - A Bangladeshi worker had been cycling home after buying lunch when he came across a crowd of people gathered under Block 350C Canberra Road, most with their phones out, taking photos and videos. Following their gaze, Mr Jahir, 34, who goes by only one name, was alarmed to see a three-year-old boy standing on the third-storey ledge of the flat, frozen in shock and staring blankly ahead. On Oct 25, Mr Jahir, a lorry driver who has been in Singapore for more than 16 years, was one of two men presented with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) Community Lifesaver Award for saving the boy. A video clip of the child being led to safety from the ledge had gone viral. On Oct 20, the toddler was standing on the third-storey ledge of the flat at around 11.50am, as several worried onlookers gathered below. Mr Jahir, who works for paper mill company Gee Ho Seng, had been cycling to his home nearby when he noticed the crowd and saw the child standing precariously close to the edge of the ledge.

Slamming doors, jangling keys loudly: West Coast neighbours say elderly couple still a nuisance despite mediation

West Coast Crescent residents accused a couple, who are in their 60s, of creating a ruckus every day by stomping their feet, slamming doors and jangling keys loudly. After seeking help from the Community Mediation Centre, the couple insisted they did not deliberately make noise as a nuisance to their neighbours at Block 801A West Coast Crescent but the problem apparently still persisted. Lai, 44, who lives in the unit across from the couple's, told Shin Min Daily News that he moved in February, while the couple had moved in at the end of last year. He initially had a good relationship with the couple and was even invited to visit their flat. The couple had told Lai that they suspected someone had relieved himself at their door. With the couple's consent, Lai installed a CCTV and directed it to the corridor space between their doors. «But not long after, they asked me why I pointed the CCTV camera at their house. Singapore's first hospice for ageing, ill pets to open in November

Saying goodbye to a pet is as heartbreaking as bidding farewell to a human family member.  And euthanisia is an option not all pet guardians are willing to take when a pet approaches the end of its life. There are pet guardians who prefer to prolong their pets’ life as long as possible, regardless of how sickly or old they may be. Dr Angeline Yang, co-founder of VetMobile SG, told TNP that pet owners are usually offered two options when their pets are diagnosed with a terminal disease – surgery or euthanasia. VetMobile SG is a mobile veterinary service that provides house calls, offering convenient, at-home medical care for pets. Dr Yang runs the business with her husband Choo Zheng Hao. “Pets are part of the family and just like any family member, they deserve to live their fullest life,” explained the 36-year-old, shedding light on her motivation for opening Fur Folks Home. What will be Singapore's first hospice for pets is slated to open by end-November.

Short consultations, multiple MCs: MOH intends to revoke MaNaDr Clinic's licence

A clinic at Beach Road that issued medical certificates (MCs) to patients after «very short» teleconsultations is expected to have their licence revoked by the Ministry of Health (MOH). On Thursday (Oct 24), MOH said that its investigations showed that MaNaDr Clinic is unable to continue providing outpatient medical services in a «clinically and ethically appropriate» manner. The clinic's outpatient telemedicine services have been suspended since Aug 16.  MOH's investigations found that a «very large number» of cases involved video call teleconsultations that lasted for a minute or less, and ended with the medicine prescriptions and issuance of MCs. «Such short consultations raise concerns about the safety and quality of clinical care provided to the patients,» the ministry noted. The clinic also issued multiple MCs to the some patients within a short period of time. MOH also said that the clinic had «questionable and poor documentation».

The National Heritage Board (NHB) said on Thursday (Oct 24) that they will commence a study on 38 Oxley Road to assess if it has national historical, heritage and architectural significance to be worthy of preservation.  The property was the home of founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew from the mid-1940s until his death in 2015. In a Facebook post on Thursday, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong noted that the house has been the subject of some discussion after the «sad passing» of Dr Lee Wei Ling. Dr Lee, the daughter of Lee Kuan Yew, died on Oct 9. She was living at 38 Oxley Road. «There's quite understandably, a range of different views amongst Singaporeans on the matter,» Tong wrote. «It's important that we approach the matter with an open mind, as well as keep our options open. The passage of time will help us better appreciate the matter in its proper context, with the benefit of some hindsight.»
