Jail for two brothers who threw Molotov cocktails at St James Power Station nightspot

SINGAPORE - Two brothers flung Molotov cocktails at a bar in St James Power Station after bouncers told the older sibling and his friends to get out of another nightspot in the vicinity following a dispute in 2016. Bryan Ho Chang Rong, 29, was sentenced to two years and four months' jail on Monday (June 17), while his younger brother Cephas Ho Jin An, 26, was given two years and nine months' jail. The pair, who committed the offence with three friends, had earlier pleaded guilty to one count each of committing mischief by fire. Cephas Ho had also admitted to consuming cannabis and being in possession of the drug. Two of their friends were dealt with in court in March. Toh Wei Yi, 29, was sentenced to 20 months' jail and Daryl Tay Kai Long, 28, who also admitted to drug-related offences, will spend 5½ years behind bars. The third, Eugene Lim Huang Sheng, died on July 11, 2017. Bryan Ho and his friends went to Club Hollywood Thai disco in St James Power Station on Sept 12, 2016, but bouncers threw them out after they had a dispute with another group of clubbers. Court documents did not reveal details of the dispute.

Mr Ng Him Yick, 41, the owner of Glassbox Aquarium in Boon Keng, told The New Paper the alleged culprit had entered the shop close to 9pm last Tuesday. The shop's closed-circuit TV (CCTV) footage from the night shows a man entering the shop and loitering for a brief moment before throwing something into a tank containing about 40 to 50 freshwater tropical fish. Mr Ng, who has been running the business for about two years, said: «I was busy attending to a customer so I didn't notice it at first. One of the customers alerted me and said there was something wrong with the water in one of the tanks.» The water in the tank had turned cloudy and was emitting a strong toxic smell.

Work-life harmony a key issue for young couples: Heng Swee Keat

SINGAPORE - As a young couple, one of the biggest struggles Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat and his wife faced was learning to strike a work-life harmony. To help find solutions for young parents who face similar problems today, he said, the Government will soon be launching a series of dialogues that will be helmed by Manpower Minister Josephine Teo. This is on top of measures such as doubling paid paternity leave to two weeks that took effect in 2013 and which gives fathers more time with their children, Mr Heng said. The deputy prime minister was speaking on Sunday (June 16) at a Father's Day celebration jointly organised by the Centre for Fathering, Dads for Life and Mediacorp. It was held at OCBC Square of the Singapore Sports Hub.

How much does it cost to live near the top primary schools in Singapore?

No matter how much the MOE tries to tell Singaporeans that «every school is a good school», the fact remains that many parents stop at nothing to get their kids into what they perceive as the top primary schools in Singapore. When there are too many students trying to get into a school, the school will run a ballot, which is basically a lottery. At this point, the only thing that can give your child an edge is if you live within 2km of the school. In fact, the nearer the school, the better your odds. That's why parents have been known to buy homes near «good» schools years ahead of time. (Some have also lied about where they live and have even gone to jail for cheating the school this way!) And, thanks to kiasu parents and our meritocratic culture, property prices around these schools have often reached stratospheric realms. Let's have a look at how much it costs to buy a home near one of these coveted schools. TOP PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN SINGAPORE & NEARBY PROPERTY PRICES We've selected a handful of top primary schools in Singapore and checked out the prices of the nearby residential properties:
