Woman allegedly stabbed to death at Maxwell Food Centre; man to be charged with murder

A 41-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a 48-year-old woman to death. The alleged murder took place at about 1am today at Maxwell Food Centre. It is understood that the suspect was Mr Wu Tau, a vendor who ran a Chinese-Thai stall called Dao Xiang Ju, and the deceased was Ms Kamonwan, a vendor who ran a Thai stall nearby. Another vendor at the food centre told Shin Min Daily News that the man and woman opened Dao Xiang Ju together about a year ago, with Ms Kamonwan apparently investing a large sum of money into the stall. About a month ago, the she started selling Thai food three stalls away from Dao Xiang Ju. It is not known what happened to the partnership between Mr Wu and Ms Kamonwan and the vendor told the Chinese daily that the duo had never been spotted arguing at the food centre. Other vendors said they did not notice anything unusual when they left the food centre at 11pm on Sept 6 and they found out about the incident only when they arrived at 7.30am the next day. Ms Kamonwan's body had already been removed by then.

Faeces and cigarette butts: Frustrated ground-floor residents at Circuit Road install awnings to combat litter

A concerned member of the public noticed a number of ground-floor units at Circuit Road had awnings over their rear doors. The residents also stowed personal belongings under the awnings and turned the space at the back of their flats into their little gardens. «I have reported this to the Town Council at least five times since last year, but there has been no change so far,» the citizen told Shin Min Daily News. He explained that he saw the residents resting under their awnings and was worried that they would get injured if something heavy were to fall on the awnings. But it seems that objects falling from above was the exact reason the residents put up their awnings, which ranged from simple tarpaulin to corrugated roofing sheets. A Block 50 resident told the Chinese daily that he had heard of high-rise littering being a problem in the estate and there were even knives thrown out the windows above. «My grandson visits me sometimes, so I'd prefer to be on the safe side,» said the resident whose flat already had an awning over the rear door when he bought it.

Property agent discovers 12 tenants in HDB flat, calls police

A property agent recently evicted a group of tenants after discovering 12 of them living in a single HDB flat.   In a video posted to TikTok on Thursday (Sept 5), the agent walks into the flat and asked the occupants: «How many people now here [sic]?»  She then begins to count the number of occupants in the house as she inspects the rooms. She didn't reveal the location of the flat in the video.  The agent also asked one of the tenants why one of the cupboards was broken, and questioned why the bed had been dismantled and kept away.  Speaking to the tenants in the video, the agent said: «You all gotta go. If not I'll call the police. I'll give you one hour to pack your stuff and get out of the place.»  The agent eventually called the police on the tenants.  At the time of writing, the video has garnered more than 1.6 million views.  Some netizens felt that the agent was too harsh for giving them only an hour to pack up, while others opined that it was the right thing to do as they were occupying the unit illegally.  «She has full right to clear everyone out immediately,» wrote one commenter.

Residents upset over closure of void deck seating area due to misuse; town council promises review

The sitting area at the void deck of Block 346 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 is temporarily closed due to misuse of the space, but not all residents are standing for it. Stomp contributor William said the area has been barricaded «for so many months» since last year and shared how it has inconvenienced residents. He said: «I wrote in via OneService and brought up the matter to Ang Mo Kio Town Council (AMKTC). Do you all know what happened? »Well, the reason given was that residents had complained about guys gathering in the night, talking loudly, drinking and smoking. «Shouldn't the police be taking action against those that disturb and disrupt the peace of the residents? Why is there a need to barricade the area? »Residents need the seats to wait for their friends for meetups or their rides to pick them up. It could also be a waiting point for people collecting items or helping to carry items up the lift, along with many other reasons. «The police and town council members should know what those seats mean to residents. Why deprive them of using the seats, especially the elderly?»

Construction of Changi Airport T5 to start in 2025: PM Wong

SINGAPORE — The construction of Changi Airport Terminal 5 (T5) will start in the first half of 2025, said Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. In the mid-2030s, when the mega terminal is operational, the aim is for Singapore to be linked by air to more than 200 cities, up from almost 150 today. Speaking at a dinner marking the 40th anniversary of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) on Sept 6, he said Singapore must sharpen its competitive edge amid intensifying competition in the air transport sector. Countries in the region and beyond are making significant investments to expand and improve their airport infrastructure to capture more traffic, noted PM Wong. «Some have announced plans for mega airports that can handle more than 100 million passengers a year. So they are narrowing the gap with Singapore,» he said. «Many airlines are also rapidly expanding their fleets and networks, including to serve more direct routes. Increasingly, flights that would have passed through Changi may no longer be needed,» he added.

'Looking for someone to BTO with me': Man pastes notices in public, sparks debate online

Do Singaporeans only get married for housing? Well, one 27-year-old man living in Woodlands certainly seems to be furthering that notion. Several notices popped up around the area earlier this month (Sept 1) stating: «Hi, I'm looking for someone to BTO with me» with the criteria that applicants need to be «friendly and easy-going» and women between the ages of 21 to 35. It also provided the number of a man going by Don Huang, who told Shin Min Daily News that he had put up 18 of these notices on walls and pillars around Woodlands MRT station and nearby malls. Huang, 27, told Shin Min that he had been in a relationship around two years ago, which didn't work out. Since then he's been unsuccessful on dating apps and said that the women around him are all attached. «It's really hard to find a girlfriend in Singapore, and dating apps are expensive, most of them require a payment,» Huang, a store manager of reportedly medium build, claimed. Huang is also interested in the upcoming Woodlands BTO flats to be released in October, and wants to find a girlfriend before then.

Woman says maid yanked her toddler by the arm, used her address to buy jewellery

After hearing her one-year-old daughter crying in the room, a woman was shocked to discover that her helper had yanked the toddler's arm.  The woman, who only wanted to be known as Lee, told AsiaOne that the incident took place in her Jurong West home on May 9.  Lee had hired the 25-year old Indonesian maid through an agency in March.  «She usually helps to put the baby to bed in our bedroom. That night, I heard my daughter crying so I pulled out the CCTV to check,» said 38-year-old Lee, who also has a four-year-old son.  CCTV footage from Lee's bedroom showed that the maid was trying to coax the toddler to sleep at about 8.30pm.  When the girl refused to sleep and started fidgeting, the helper tried flipping her onto her side before roughly pulling her arm to carry her.  Lee said she confronted the maid about her actions, but the latter denied being rough with the toddler, saying that she does the same to her own children.  «It was only after I showed her the CCTV footage that she admitted she was being rough,» said Lee, who also told her maid that it could also be a potential police case.

A former bouncer who loves pizza: 6 things to know about Pope Francis

On Monday (Sept 2), Pope Francis embarked on a 12-day trip across Southeast Asia — his longest since becoming head of the Catholic Church in 2013. After visiting Indonesia, the 87-year-old is now heading to Papua New Guinea, and will visit Timor-Leste before arriving in Singapore on Sept 11. During his three days here, the pope will celebrate Mass at the National Stadium, visit a nursing home for the elderly and aged sick, as well as Catholic Junior College. Here are six things you may not have known about Pope Francis. He chose 'Francis' in honour of a saint Born as Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, Pope Francis is the son of Italian immigrants. He was elected as pope in 2013 following his predecessor's resignation. The pope chose his papal name «Francis» in honour of St Francis of Assisi — a 13th-century monk known for his charity and kindness to animals. «Oh, how I would like a poor Church, and for the poor,» said Pope Francis at the time. The name choice was not surprising to observers, given his preference for a simple life even before he became the pope.

All hawker Michael Poh wanted to do was show his appreciation for his customers. On Sept 1, the 44-year-old sold his chicken rice at $2. He had planned to offer the special promotion over three days. But what he encountered at his stall at 206 Toa Payoh North forced him to tweak his Customer Appreciation Day promotion in order to manage the crowd. Poh was hoping to extend the promotion to his regular customers but most of them were put off by the snaking queue of unfamiliar faces. «It was extremely packed but there was not much of my target audience. I did not recognise 80 per cent of the people in line,» said Poh, who runs Poh Kee Chicken Rice with his wife and elderly father. «Many of my regulars said they would return after the promotion was over as the queue was too long and they did not want to 'take advantage' of me.»

'I was pushed down the stairs': Man claims he was attacked at MacPherson bar

A man was left with scars on his face after a night out with his friends turned awry.  Lun Chenxi, 27, told Shin Min Daily News that he was drinking with six friends at a bar at Grantral Mall in MacPherson on Saturday (Aug 31) night.  The group arrived at the bar at about 9pm, and left at 2am on Sunday morning.  Just as he was walking down the stairs, the financial advisor slipped and fell.  «I suspect I was pushed down the stairs. As soon as I fell, someone rushed over and hit me,» Lun said.  As he was tipsy and suffered head injuries, the man had trouble recalling the details of that night.  «According to my friend, the attacker claimed he was unhappy with me for picking a fight with his brother, so he attacked me.  »In reality, I don't know the two brothers very well. When we were drinking together, we got along with one another."  After getting beaten up, Lun vaguely remembered someone helping him up. He was already in the hospital when he woke up.
