Lions squander two-goal lead in 4-2 loss to Thailand at Asean Cup

SINGAPORE - The Lions will be licking their wounds while on their travels across the Causeway after they squandered a 2-0 lead to suffer a 4-2 defeat by Thailand in an ASEAN Championship match at the National Stadium on Dec 17. The Lions' last-four hopes will now go down to the final group match against Malaysia at Bukit Jalil National Stadium, where Singapore will need to avoid defeat to reach the last four of the biennial competition for only the second time since winning the title in 2012.  The Lions have six points from three matches and sit second in Group A. They began the campaign with a 2-1 victory over Cambodia at the National Stadium on Dec 11 before a 3-0 win over Timor-Leste in Vietnam three days later. Lions coach Tsutomu Ogura spoke about a tale of two halves, saying: «The first half I think was the best 45 minutes (I have overseen). Players were not scared, not afraid, built up from the back. The opponents were also a little bit confused.»

Singapore-bound flight returns to Penang after 15 minutes, AirAsia cites 'adverse weather'

A Singapore-bound flight from Penang returned back to Malaysia after a brief amount of time in the air, Shin Min Daily News reported on Sunday (Dec 15). AirAsia flight AK1729 was supposed to take off from Penang International Airport at 6.55pm last Friday (Dec 13), landing in Singapore at 8.20pm. However, things went awry even before the plane took off as passengers had to wait out a delay of two hours. When the plane finally departed the runway at 9.30pm, however, it soon turned back some 15 minutes into the flight, making an emergency landing in Penang. AK1729 was then further delayed, finally leaving Penang at around 6am the next morning, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. The flight's passengers only arrived in Singapore at 7am that morning, almost 11 hours later than was originally planned. A cracked windscreen? Speaking with Shin Min, a male passenger claimed that the flight may have returned to Penang due to damage to the plane's windscreen. In photographs seen by the Chinese publication, a portion of the windscreen appeared damaged, with mesh-like cracks on its surface.

Singapore's third archbishop Nicholas Chia critically ill

Singapore's third archbishop Nicholas Chia is critically ill, according to a post by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore on their social media pages on Tuesday (Dec 17). «We invite all to pray for him and for those who care for him during this time,» the post also stated. Chia, 86, is an Archbishop Emeritus, having resigned from his position in May 2013. He is the first Singapore-born clergy to have been appointed to the position of Archbishop. In February 2014, Chia was comatose after a fall which caused him to sustain a brain haemorrhage. Nearly a month later in March, Chia woke up from his coma after the large clot in his head had resolved and swelling subsided, reported Today Online. Born on April 8, 1938, Chia grew up in an attap house in Hougang with a staunch Catholic family, according to a page on the Archdiocese of Singapore's website. He'd also described his growing up years as «simple but happy».  He was ordained as a priest on Jan 26, 1964 and began his ministry as assistant parish priest at the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, Catholic News reported.

SINGAPORE — A former security officer was fined $1,800 on Dec 17 after he abandoned his guardhouse duties and forgot to get rid of a fake bomb that was supposed to be used in an exercise at his then workplace. Durendran Vicknesh Venkatraman's forgetfulness had sparked a bomb scare that resulted in multiple Home Team officers being deployed to Sing Industrial Complex in Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 2 on Jan 5. While the officers were conducting their investigation into the case involving an object resembling an improvised explosive device (IED) that turned out to be a dud, more than a hundred people were either evacuated or prevented from entering the premises for around 90 minutes. Before handing down the sentence on Dec 17, District Judge Ow Yong Tuck Leong said that the 46-year-old Singaporean had left the complex for around 5.5 hours when he should be working, and had visited his friends at Oxley Tower in Robinson Road, more than 7km away. However, the judge also noted that court documents did not state that Durendran had displayed prior unprofessional behaviour.

A Singaporean driver lost her Touch 'n Go card containing RM150 (S$45) after lending it to a woman who failed to return it. Stomp contributor Eileen said the incident occurred at the Johor Bahru checkpoint on Dec 11. She recounted: «I was waiting at the second last counter when I saw a car stopping at the last counter for awhile, then reversing and waiting. »When I reached my counter, a woman from the car came over and asked to borrow my Touch 'n Go card. She was holding RM20 but did not give it to me.« Eileen shared dashcam footage that shows her handing her card over to the woman, who was wearing a white tank top. The latter can be seen holding money in her hands. »I waited in front but she did not come and return my card to me,« the Stomp contributor added. »Instead, she took the card and walked away immediately while I was still at the counter waiting for my passport to be stamped. Eileen also believes she had been targeted by the woman.

According to Ho, the individual who claimed to be a regular customer had reached out him via WhatsApp at around 11.30am, wanting to place an order for his company event with door-to-door delivery. The customer claimed to have an event with 10 to 15 people attending and after rounds of negotiation, Ho agreed to sell him 10 boxes of Mao Shan Wang durians at a discounted price of $40 per box. Durians taken during deliveryman's break The order was scheduled to be delivered before 6pm, and Ho's deliveryman arrived at the HDB unit at 5.45pm. Singaporean allegedly linked to crypto scam gang arrested in Thailand

SINGAPORE — A Singaporean man has been arrested in Thailand for his suspected involvement in cryptocurrency scam activities that cheated would-be investors of more than 22.4 million baht (S$887,000). He was part of a ring which created a sham app resembling the Tidex digital cryptocurrency trading platform. The 32-year-old man, who has been identified by only his surname, was suspected of opening digital wallet accounts to store the ill-gotten proceeds from the victims, reported Thai media, citing an arrest warrant issued by the Phrakhanong Criminal Court in Bangkok. The group's fake app dangled the prospect of high investment returns, convincing victims to transfer funds totalling around 22.4 million baht. Checks with the Anti-Online Scam Operation Centre in Bangkok revealed that the scam had ensnared many victims, who made at least 17 fund transfers without any investments being actually made, the Thai police said.

Allianz withdraws $2.2b offer for Income Insurance

SINGAPORE — Allianz has withdrawn its offer to acquire at least 51 per cent of Singapore's Income Insurance for about US$1.63 billion (S$2.2 billion), the German company said in a statement on Monday (Dec 16). Reuters reported on Dec 13 that the German insurer has scrapped the proposed acquisition. Allianz said in Monday's statement that the decision came in light of the Singapore government's announcement during a parliament sitting on Oct 14 and subsequent changes to the country's Insurance Act. The acquisition would have lifted Allianz to fourth largest composite insurer in Asia, from ninth, but sparked criticism in Singapore because of concerns that it would detract from a mission to provide affordable insurance for lower-income workers. Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said in October that the city-state would block Allianz's bid, but remained open to a new deal if its concerns could be addressed, which Allianz said at the time it would attempt to do. The government subsequently amended the insurance law giving it more power to scrutinise buyouts of cooperative-linked insurers.

Her Tiffany wedding ring, two diamond rings and a bracelet are gone. A Singaporean woman is distraught after losing jewellery worth $30,000 during a holiday in Thailand. Her husband, Stomp contributor Jonny, said a hotel bellboy was involved in the incident. The couple had stayed at the JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok from Oct 27 to Nov 2. «Our relaxing holiday quickly turned into a nightmare.» said the Stomp contributor. While checking out, his wife, who was in a rush, forgot to put on her jewellery and left it in the bathroom. She realised it 30 minutes later and they immediately informed the hotel. «However, roughly 30 minutes later, we were told that the jewellery could not be found,» recounted the husband. «This was already concerning, but what happened next left us absolutely shocked. »The duty manager, who had spoken with us earlier, made an unsettling comment. She described my diamond rings as 'white', which was peculiar because we had never shared the characteristics of the rings with her. It seemed almost as though she was describing them as if she had seen them before.

'It was my hard-earned savings': PHV driver's $66k used car repossessed 2 weeks after purchase

On Sept 28, 66-year-old private-hire driver Seng Kim Wang saw a Facebook ad that took him to a listing for a used car by Kartiam Singapore on Motorist Singapore. Dealer Jordy Yong told Seng to pay a $5,000 deposit for the $65,800 Toyota Sienta Hybrid. Seng signed the sales agreement for the five-year-old car at CarVault-AML's showroom and was told that he would receive the car on Oct 10. Yong delivered the vehicle to a carpark in Tengah but told Seng that the transfer of ownership could not be completed as it was after office hours and demanded the remaining $60,800. Although Seng insisted on paying only after the transfer of ownership, Yong said full payment had to be made and Seng reluctantly complied. «Car rental is expensive. By paying in full, I can work without having to worry about the car expenses,» Seng, who has been working as a private-hire driver for six years after 10 years as a cabby, told TNP. The transfer of ownership remained incomplete despite Seng's numerous requests, which were met with either excuses or silence. Yong repeatedly claimed he was waiting for Motorist Singapore to process the transfer.

'It sneaked in quietly, causing anxiety and confusion': Man shares struggles with autoimmune condition

If his wife, Dr Miria Hastuti Soedarsono, 34, had not insisted that he be given a spinal tap, the music teacher and songwriter could have ended up in a mental hospital. «Hazwady had three months of weird behaviour. He would say he could not see properly, and he would go without sleeping for three days at a stretch. He loves our son and would never scold the boy, yet he was shouting at Almizan,» recalled Dr Soedarsono. Hazwady said: «This disease was a silent thief. It sneaked in quietly, causing anxiety, confusion and memory loss, compounded by wild emotional outbursts, hallucinations and the inability to comprehend the thoughts in my mind.» The disease struck him in late 2018 when the family was leading «a happy, calm and pleasant life».

In the footage, the motorcyclist is seen approaching a traffic junction slowly, moving across the intersection as another stationary car does the same. He is suddenly hit by a multipurpose vehicle (MPV) from his left. The impact of the crash sends the motorcyclist flying into the air and landing hard in front of the MPV. Parts of the motorcycle are seen scattered across the junction, while the MPV's bonnet appears to have been crumpled from the force of the collision. Police investigations are ongoing.

'Coming here feels like coming home': PM Wong visits residents in East Coast

Bala Trichy Iyer, 56, gives back to his community by offering basic coding classes at Changi Simei Community Club (CC). The entrepreneur, who founded technology start-up The Walnut, has held three Python lessons so far. To his surprise, residents in their 70s with no tech background showed up and kept coming back. «Most of them say: 'I have no idea. Looks like I have missed the boat.' But we say: 'No... we'll teach you today. And not only will you do it effortlessly, you'll be enjoying it also,'» he said. Such community spirit is important as Singapore embarks on a new phase of nation-building in a troubled time, said Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Dec 14. «You can see it around the world when you read the news. The world is becoming more troubled. There are wars in Europe, in the Middle East,» he said at a community event in Bedok. «Society is becoming more divided, trust being eroded.» But Singapore can be a «beacon of light» and come together to face challenges, he said. «We can be stable, secure, reliable and trusted.»

His wife, a 33-year-old Chinese national, died from her injuries, SETNews reported. The man had driven a rental car, taking his family to pick strawberries in a farm that day. While en route to their next destination, he lost control of the vehicle. Instead of making a right turn like other motorists, the white car was veering towards the left and ended up crashing into a power pole, CCTV footage of the area showed. The power pole collapsed onto the road, blocking traffic across three lanes. While the man and his daughter were able to exit the vehicle, his wife was trapped back seat, local police said. She showed no signs of life after first responders extricated her from the wreckage. The woman was taken to hospital where she was subsequently pronounced dead.

SINGAPORE - The Lions had their reserves to thank on Dec 14, when they maintained their perfect start to their 2024 ASEAN Championship campaign as they overcame minnows Timor-Leste 3-0 at the Hang Day Stadium in Hanoi, Vietnam. Japan-born playmaker Kyoga Nakamura scored his first goal in his fourth appearance for his adopted country when he kept his nerve to slot in a 76th-minute penalty to his left and send Junildo Pereira the wrong way. The spot kick was confirmed following a video assistant referee check, after Olagar Xavier was adjudged to have pushed substitute Shawal Anuar in the box. Shawal then kept up his rich vein of form with a late brace to take his tally to 16 goals in 39 international appearances. Again it was the bench players who made the difference, as he tucked away Safuwan Baharudin's cross in the 83rd minute, before he tapped in seven minutes later after fellow substitutes Jordan Emaviwe and Farhan Zulkifli combined to create the opening.

Allianz SE has scrapped a proposed $1.5 billion euro (S$2.2 billion) acquisition of a 51 per cent stake in Singaporean firm Income Insurance Ltd because of public opposition to the deal, a source familiar with the matter said. The move would have lifted Allianz to fourth largest composite insurer in Asia, from ninth, but sparked critique in Singapore because of concerns that it would detract from a mission to provide affordable insurance for lower-income workers. PDPC says data protection guidelines on NRIC numbers will be updated after public consultation

New advisory guidelines on the use of National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) numbers will be issued by the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC), following the government's change in stance that such numbers should no longer be viewed as private and confidential. The PDPC also confirmed that companies are still barred from collecting, using or disclosing NRIC numbers and making copies of the identity card, unless they are required by law to do so. However, any changes to the guidelines will be introduced only after industry and public consultation, the PDPC said on Saturday night (Dec 14). The commission did not say when the consultation is expected to be completed. Like any personal identifier, PDPC said that the NRIC number is still subject to the data protection obligations in the PDPA. Therefore, organisations collecting NRIC data must still obtain valid consent and comply with reasonable use and ensure protection. PDPC noted that it has previously taken action against organisations which have used NRIC numbers for authentication and breached their data protection obligations.

Acra disables search function for NRIC numbers on portal for now after public concerns

SINGAPORE — The Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (Acra) has temporarily disabled the function allowing people to access the IC numbers of individuals on its new portal. This is after members of the public surfaced concerns that they were able to access NRIC numbers through a search, without paying, via the Bizfile portal launched on Dec 9. The authorities clarified, however, that the NRIC number is a unique identifier assigned by the Singapore Government as a means to identify individuals, and should be used as such. Said a Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) spokesperson in a statement early on Dec 14: «As a unique identifier, the NRIC number is assumed to be known, just as our real names are known. »There should therefore not be any sensitivity in having one's full NRIC number made public, in the same way that we routinely share and reveal our full names to others." In a separate statement, Acra said that its new Bizfile portal provides the full NRIC, in line with a broader government effort to move away from using masked NRIC numbers.

Friends of the victim said last rites will be held where the family lives in Thanh Hoa, a city in central Vietnam about 150km south of Hanoi. Nguyen Trong Vinh, who shared a Housing Board flat with Hong and two other roommates, said more than 100 friends and relatives are waiting in Hong's home town for her return. The 34-year-old mother of three was stabbed repeatedly on Dec 10 where she worked at the Quan Long Nippon Paint hardware shop in Block 210 Hougang Street 21. The flat she lived in is in the same block. A 26-year-old man — another worker at the store — tried to stop the attack and was wounded. The attacker, who was injured in the incident, has since been charged with murder. The victim's older sister arrived in Singapore from Vietnam on Dec 11 to settle her sister's affairs. She paid her respects at a makeshift altar set up for Hong at the back of the hardware store.
