Poly grad hopes to solve food delivery spillage problem with innovative GRIPBox

In 2022, she got a D7 for Mathematics for her O-level exam. Three years later, Nallathambi Kavya is not only a fresh poly graduate but a founder of a start-up named GRIP, which aims to solve the woes of food delivery riders. The product, GRIPBox, is a storage box which helps to solve the problem of spillage. It is now in the testing stage and Kavya, 20, is still collecting feedback from delivery riders before she refines the product again. «People say (GRIPBox) is very practical, easy to use and innovative,» she told AsiaOne. This achievement is a world away when she failed her O-level Math because she and her family tested positive for Covid-19 on the day of the exam, causing her to miss it. The poor Math score meant she could not apply to study an engineering-related course in a polytechnic via the Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE). Undeterred, Kavya, who told AsiaOne she wanted to pursue engineering «no matter what», focused on securing a place in polytechnic through the Direct Admissions Exercise (DAE), and was accepted into Republic Polytechnic's (RP) Common Engineering diploma programme.

Yale-NUS College (YNC) alumni and netizens have expressed dismay after learning that DVDs containing classic films were destroyed prior to the closure of the university. Student associates working at the YNC Library were asked by staff to destroy over 100 DVDs back in April before the college shuts down in June, reported The Straits Times.  Many YNC alumni have taken to social media to show their disappointment in the way National University of Singapore (NUS) has handled the matter. Speaking to AsiaOne, a 26-year-old graduate from YNC who wanted to be known only as Adam, said that «it feels like a gut punch» and that there has been an obvious «loss of transparency and collaboration» as a result of NUS' recent management of the library.

Resale flat prices may begin moderating from 2026 as new units reach MOP: Chee Hong Tat

Resale flat prices may begin to moderate starting from 2026, National Development Minister Chee Hong Tat said during his first site visit to Toa Payoh Ridge on Wednesday (May 28). Minister Chee, who was sworn in as Minister for National Development (MND) last Friday (May 23), was previously Minister for Transport. Speaking with media at a playground in the new Toa Payoh Ridge, Chee acknowledged that the increase in resale flat prices has been a concern for Singaporeans. «This is also an important area for my ministry and we want to see how we can help to address this concern,» he said. He explained that one contributing reason for these price hikes is the Build-To-Order flat (BTO) delays that occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic, which drove demand for resale flats. Chee stated that he believes this situation will improve come 2026 as more new flats built over the past few years reach their five-year minimum occupation period (MOP). «Once we see more supply coming in and also coupled with more new BTO flats entering the market, I think we will see moderation,» he said.

More firms increased their employees' wages in 2024, compared to the year before, said the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) in a report on Wednesday (May 28). The proportion of firms that raised employees' wages increased to 78.3 per cent in 2024, up from 65.6 per cent in 2023, according to MOM's report on wage practices for 2024.  Concurrently, the proportion of firms that cut employees' pay fell from from 6.5 per cent in 2023 to 3.2 per cent in 2024. The remaining 18.5 per cent of firms kept the wages of their employees constant. Average wage increase has moderated: MOM Among firms which raised wages, the average wage increase in 2024 of 6.6 per cent has moderated from 7.2 per cent 2023. However, among firms which reduced wages, the cut was smaller in 2024 (-3.6 per cent) than in 2023 (-6.2 per cent). As economic growth continued and employers' profits went up, nominal total wages (which includes employer CPF contributions, basic wage and an annual variable component to account for bonuses) grew by 5.6 per cent in 2024 — comparable to 5.2 per cent in 2023.

A 41-year-old Singaporean man and his 38-year-old Malaysian wife were arrested in Melaka on Monday (May 26) for allegedly distributing drug-laced vape liquids to school children. Malaysian news portal Voice Asia News reported that police raided the couple's rented home following a three-month long investigation and seized 127.5ml of ketamine, which was believed to be used in vape devices, and 212 ecstasy pills among others. The total value of the seized items amounted up to RM32,650 (S$9,900).  «Preliminary investigations indicate that the couple had been actively distributing various types of drugs in the form of vape liquids, pills and powders across the state over the past three months,» Melaka police chief Deputy Commissioner Datuk Dzulkairi Mukhtar told reporters on Tuesday (May 27), The Star reported. They are believed to have distributed the controlled substances through social media and personal networks. Police confiscated a car and a motorcycle believed to belong to the couple. Investigations are ongoing.

'We are just the middlemen': How property agents grapple with landlords' discriminatory preferences

Over the past four years, Yue Kaixin regularly advises landlords on how to maximise their rental income. But the last thing the property agent from ERA Singapore would do is go against their choice of tenants — even when some insist, «No Indians». «I still had to obey them,» Yue said. «I can't tell them what to do. If not, do you think I'll still have a business?» Yue is among several property agents in Singapore who told AsiaOne they are reluctant to confront landlords who refuse to rent to tenants from minority races. Other agents, on the other hand, have to grapple with landlords who show prejudice against members of the LGBTQ community.  One property agent, who has worked in real estate for over a decade, recalled feeling awkward early in his career when landlords made it clear they did not want to rent to Indians. Some of these preferences stem from stereotypes that Indian tenants, both Singaporeans and expats, have a nonchalant attitude towards maintaining the property and they cook food with strong smells.

Secondary school dropout, 36, graduates top of his cohort at Republic Polytechnic

SINGAPORE — When Muhammad Haikal Nekla dropped out of secondary school at 16 due to family issues and began working full-time to help support them, he intended to go back to complete his education some day. He made good on the promise only many years later. «When I made the decision to drop out, I told my principal that I would continue my education one day, but I never got around to it,» he said. A discussion with some Republic Polytechnic (RP) interns he was supervising at the restaurant chain where he worked spurred him to return to school at the age of 33, in 2021. «They shared that (polytechnics) took a more hands-on approach to learning, where theories are applied to real-life problems. That was what interested me the most,» said Haikal, who was then an assistant manager at Fish & Co. After more than 15 years of working as waiter, barista and manager in the food and beverage (F&B) industry, Haikal enrolled in RP's diploma of restaurant and culinary operations programme in 2022 via the Early Admissions Exercise, which is open to working adults.

Under siege? Helldivers 2's latest city to be invaded by aliens could be spoof of Singapore

If peace in your (virtual) home faces an extra-terrestrial threat, would you answer the call to arms? For many gamers playing Helldivers 2, it seems this is no longer hypothetical, but a very real choice they must face as an alien invasion bears down upon a megacity that could be a spoof of Singapore. Helldivers 2, a game by Arrowhead Game Studios, follows the titular Helldivers, which are an elite group of soldiers protecting the Sol System from alien threats. Earlier in May, the game's version of Earth, known as Super-Earth, came under threat of invasion by an alien race known as the Illuminate, which are a technologically advanced race and the arch enemy of mankind. They had manipulated a black hole, guiding it towards Super-Earth, leaving behind planetary-level destruction in its wake before emerging from within the black hole once in proximity of Super-Earth. Of the seven megacities that inhabit Super-Earth, three have already fallen to the invasion, while three of the remaining four are currently under siege.

'He doesn't see the age gap': How a 93-year-old with vision loss and a 61-year-old bonded over bowling

At 93, not many people will want to spend time in a bowling alley, let alone play the game. But William Thong is different. He may be just seven years away from the century mark, but his passion for the game not just keeps him active — the sport helped him find a friend for life. Not many bowlers wanted to play with Thong because of his age, but when Alfred George Pillay, 61, stepped in, it began what is now a lasting friendship. It started when Thong requested Pillay to play with him during a Fun Bowl competition eight years ago. «After we got the pairing, we haven't been separated since,» Pillay, an emcee, told AsiaOne. Now they meet up at Starbowl bowling alley in Bukit Batok about three to four times a week. When AsiaOne visited them on Tuesday morning (May 27), they were bowling side by side. Pillay added that a lot of senior bowlers did not want to play with Thong as he moved slower due to age. A glaucoma diagnosis about 25 years ago meant that Thong lost the vision in his right eye. He can still see with his left eye but his vision is not fully intact.

Singapore's biggest motor association in legal tussle with its president

SINGAPORE — The Republic's largest motor association and its president are tussling in the High Court over the election of the group's next Executive Committee (Exco). The Singapore Vehicle Traders Association (SVTA) had taken Neo Tiam Ting to court in a bid to have the June 2024 election of its 27th Exco declared null and void. «The dispute between the parties is essentially a political dispute,» High Court judge Vinodh Coomaraswamy said in a written judgement issued on May 23. The SVTA, a collective of nearly 400 second-hand motor vehicle traders, was set up in 1972. Neo was elected president of SVTA in 2022; he was re-elected in 2024 for a second two-year term. He was also the association's president from 2011 to 2015. Ruling in the SVTA's favour on May 23, Judge Vinodh said he found that the 27th Exco's election in June 2024 «was of no legal effect and is therefore null and void». Neo has appealed against the decision. The parties' quarrel stems from their differing views about whom its members may appoint as representatives to vote at a general meeting — and for an Exco.

Too many bots, too few instructors: Why the long wait for driving lessons in Singapore

SINGAPORE — Joylene Chen enrolled at the ComfortDelGro Driving Centre (CDC) in November 2024, thinking she would get a licence to drive an automatic car within six months. Seven months later, the 25-year-old is still far from her goal, but not for the lack of trying. The finance executive has managed to book only three practical lessons so far — after paying $30 to secure them using a Telegram bot, which is programmed to track available slots in the CDC's booking system. She is not alone. Many other students have also had to resort to using automated bots, or paying someone on local online marketplace Carousell, to snag these lessons. A private driving instructor who declined to be named said that out of desperation, his students sometimes pay others on Carousell $30 to $50 per slot. «This is a very unhealthy practice,» he told The Straits Times. The three driving schools here have long acknowledged the issue, and have suspended for up to three months accounts found to have used bots and scripts.

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) must «constantly re-examine» its operations to overcome new challenges, said Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing on Tuesday (May 27).  Chan was speaking to reporters at Nee Soon Camp, the final stop in his morning visit of high readiness units across all four SAF services — his first since being sworn into his new appointment on May 23. «We are in a changed world. There are new challenges, disruptions because of technology, and new forces that we have to content with,» said Chan.  «But it is also why we have come up new ways to overcome our challenges.»  During his visit to Nee Soon Camp, Chan observed troopers from the Army Deployment Force (ADF) conduct their routine training to sharpen their response to peacetime contingencies, such as terrorism threats and disaster relief. The all-regular unit were put through the paces, accounting for strength and equipment, before they were deployed in peacekeeper protected response vehicles. Chan said that he is heartened that the SAF is not resting on its laurels, and is «constantly re-examining the way it does its operations».

Uniqlo is now selling a T-shirt that looks strikingly similar to the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) admin T-shirt — a staple worn by full-time national servicemen (NSFs) across the country — according to a Reddit post last Saturday (May 24). In the post, Reddit user Naufrage92 shared a photograph of a Uniqlo mannequin wearing a shirt in a shade of green close to the iconic khaki green colours that NSFs are so familiar with. The clothing in question is the Japanese apparel brand's crew neck tee, described as being «carefully crafted with a smooth texture», and made from «100 per cent cotton». «So Uniqlo is selling SAF admin shirts now?» Naufrage92 jokingly questioned. A quick search on Uniqlo's website confirmed that the crew neck short-sleeved T-shirt in a shade called «56 olive» bears an uncanny resemblance to the SAF's admin T-shirt, sans the SAF logo.  Interestingly, the garment falls under the women's catalogue.

The Shangri-La Dialogue runs from May 30-June 1, attracting defence ministers, senior military and security officials, diplomats, analysts and weapons makers from around the world. Analysts and regional diplomats say while a speech by French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday night is the keynote address, all eyes will also be on US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth on Saturday when the Pentagon chief lays out his vision for the Trump administration's defence policy for the region. Hegseth will be closely watched by Asian allies not only for his approach towards them, but also how the Trump administration views and articulates the threat from China's military modernisation and ongoing tensions in disputed waters across East Asia.

Asean must strengthen its integration to give itself 'manoeuvring space': PM Wong

KUALA LUMPUR — Asean countries must redouble efforts to deepen the grouping's integration in a world where multilateralism and globalisation are in retreat, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said on May 26. Doing so while also strengthening its external partnerships will be key to ensuring it has «the manoeuvring space and the agency» to continue charting its own destiny in these turbulent times, he added. Speaking at both the plenary and retreat sessions of the 46th Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur, PM Wong said a more ambitious agenda is necessary for Asean in the years ahead if the region is to be more secure, stable and prosperous. In his remarks, PM Wong commended Malaysia for its efforts in steering Asean's response through these very difficult times. «We should continue to constructively engage the US, individually as countries but more importantly, collectively as Asean. We appreciate Malaysia's leadership in that regard,» he said.

Rising rents put the squeeze on small businesses in Singapore: Should the Govt do more?

SINGAPORE — The clock is ticking for Nicher, a bakery serving French pastries and coffee at The Brooks, a mixed-use development near Sembawang Road. The bakery's owner, Melvin Koh, 39, has decided to sell the business when his lease expires at the end of June.  The former pastry chef with Marina Bay Sands says his lease will go up 15 per cent from his current rental of $5,000 if he chooses to renew it, which will make running the business unsustainable. «Rent takes up at least 50 per cent of my total operating expenses,» said Koh. «Costs of ingredients and labour are also rising.» Koh, who was charged a monthly rental of $4,500 when he started his business in 2022, is just one of a number of business owners across the island who are struggling with rising rents. The rental squeeze has driven some businesses to write publicly about their woes on social media, drawing public attention to the issue. One such business is Flor Patisserie, a cake shop in Siglap Drive. Chef-owner Heidi Tan said the landlord is raising the rent by 57 per cent, from $5,400 to $8,500, and that she intends to move out by early July.

Pay me 5k SGD and I take it down.» According to the «manager», the profile was «down» and he had changed the access details to it. «When I get paid I give you back access,» the manager said. Hujic told 8world that she had hired the freelance «manager» based in the Philippines to create engagement. Hujic, who used to work with DBS, had travelled to Bali in May and met a Singaporean man who she mistook for Gupta. A photograph of her with the man, later identified as Kumar H Subramaniam, was uploaded to her LinkedIn account, along with a post that claimed she had met Gupta.

'I'm gaming the system': Singaporean moves to Thailand, flies back weekly for work to save costs

A Singaporean man made the unconventional choice to live in Thailand and fly back for work every week in order to save costs. Chen Shao Chun, an adjunct lecturer at the National University of Singapore (NUS), moved to Chiang Mai, Thailand, with his wife in November last year, reported CNBC. The 39-year-old said he returns to Singapore to teach a three-hour-long digital marketing class at NUS once a week. He earns about $2,000 to $4,000 per month, which covers his travel, as well as his and his wife’s living expenses in Thailand. «I’m gaming the system,» Chen said. «Three hours of working in Singapore can sustain my entire expenditure in Thailand.» He moved to Thailand after he was retrenched from Google and realised that he was financially independent and had the flexibility to change his life, he told CNBC. Thanks to his habit of living below his means and investing up to 50 per cent of his pay, Chen had built up a seven-figure investment portfolio, worth around $2.5 million.

SINGAPORE — Home Team officers will work together with their robot counterparts when the latter are deployed as soon as by mid-2027. The humanoid robots will perform high-risk tasks such as firefighting, hazardous materials (hazmat) operations, and search-and-rescue missions. Initially, the robots will be controlled remotely by human operators, but are expected to be powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and deployed autonomously from 2029. During autonomous deployment, AI will allow the machines to respond to different scenarios, with humans supervising and intervening only when necessary. On May 26, four of these robots, which are being developed by the Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX), were showcased at the opening of the AI TechXplore exhibition. The two-day science and technology exhibition, held at Fusionopolis One, highlights HTX's efforts to leverage AI to enhance Home Team operations. The exhibition was held alongside the HTX career fair, Careers@HTX. Three of the robots on display are about 1.7m-tall, while the fourth is half a metre shorter.

'This could trigger renewed interest in en-bloc sales': Realtors react to revised height limit for buildings near airports

The revision of height limits of buildings near airports is a «significant planning shift» that will potentially provide «opportunity and complexity for developers and homeowners», realtors have said. Speaking with AsiaOne, Era Realty associate division director Asaph Mathew said that allowing buildings to be constructed taller will «naturally increase plot value in previously constrained zones like Changi, Loyang, and Upper East Coast».  On Thursday (May 22), Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat announced that buildings in close proximity to the airports can be built to up to 15 storeys taller, while industrial or commercial ones can be built up to nine storeys taller, come August. Aside from Changi and Seletar airports, Singapore has military airbases in Paya Lebar, Sembawang, Changi and Tengah. «This (revision) could trigger renewed interest in en-bloc sales, especially for ageing low-rise developments that now have vertical potential,» Mathew said.

10 years on, survivors of fatal Mount Kinabalu expedition return to finish what they started

SINGAPORE — A decade has gone by since several pupils and teachers were killed on the slopes of Mount Kinabalu in Malaysia due to an earthquake. News coverage of the tragedy has petered out, the mountain has reopened to climbers after a period of closure for repairs, and life went on. But memories of that fateful climb have never strayed far for some survivors. Two of them from Singapore — Emyr Uzayr and Prajesh Dhimant Patel — returned to the same mountain in May to finish the journey that they embarked on in 2015. At only 12 back then, they were among 29 Primary 6 pupils and eight staff from Tanjong Katong Primary School on an expedition to scale the mountain, when a 6.0-magnitude earthquake in Sabah caused a landslide and boulders to come crashing down. Seven pupils, two teachers, and an adventure guide accompanying the group were among 18 people who were killed on June 5, 2015. The duo told The Straits Times that even though there were fears and hesitancy, they sought closure and wanted to do it for their friends who could not.
