Core inflation rises to 1.4% in February, import cost pressures likely to pick up: MAS, MTI

Singapore's core inflation rose to 1.4 per cent year-on-year in February, up from 1.0 per cent in January, said the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) in a press release on Monday (March 23). February's core inflation is the highest since 1.7 per cent was recorded in December 2024. Core inflation was particularly boosted by higher inflation in services, food, and retail and other goods, partly reflecting seasonal effects associated with the Chinese New Year in February, said MAS and MTI.On a month-on-month basis, core prices increased by 0.5 per cent in February.Separately, overall inflation — which excludes all non-consumption expenditures such as purchases of houses, shares and other financial assets — fell to 1.2 per cent year-on-year in February from 1.4 per cent, on the back of lower accommodation and private transport inflation that more than offset higher core inflation. Sector-wise, MAS and MTI noted that accommodation inflation eased from 1.9 per cent in January to 0.3 per cent in February, due to a smaller increase in the cost of housing maintenance and repairs.

Some records shouldn't be broken, especially when Singapore is already hot enough. Several of Singapore's weather records were matched or broken in 2025, the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) stated in their Annual Climate Assessment Report released on Monday (March 23). June 2025 was Singapore's warmest June since 1929, tied with 1997. November was also Singapore's warmest November since 1929.And the highest-ever November temperature of 36.0 deg C was recorded at Newton on Nov 1, during an exceptionally warm and dry period, surpassing the previous record of 35.8 dec C.  Singapore's average temperature in 2025 was 28.1 deg C, making it the joint 8th warmest year on record alongside 2010 and 2002. «This reflects the influence of the ongoing long-term warming trend globally and Singapore,» said MSS.The country's annual mean temperature has risen by 0.24 deg C per decade since 1984. Singapore also experienced its wettest March in 2025 due to La Nina conditions and north-east monsoon surges at the start of the year.

A bevy of six otters recently ganged up on a crocodile at the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, delighting the internet as they forced the large reptile to retreat.Facebook user Rovena Chew shared on the Singapore Wildlife Sightings page that she had recorded the dramatic interaction at about 7.20am on Sunday (March 22).In the clip, a crocodile resting in the waters off a muddy bank suddenly lunges sideways and snaps at an otter, which speedily scampers away. The sudden splash attracts the attention of five other otters, which start circling the croc as it attempts to chase the first otter. As the reptile strikes at them twice with its jaws wide open, the sleek otters wiggle away twice. Finally, as the otters gather again, the crocodile slinks back in defeat and submerges itself beneath the water's surface. Following the minute-long confrontation, the otters are seen romping around the area, some with fish in their mouths.Chew's post has attracted over 1,400 likes and nearly 100 comments from amazed netizens.

Budget 2026 is betting on AI — but are you ready or about to be left behind?

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s speech about AI during Budget 2026 definitely caught my attention. That’s when I knew the term wasn’t just another “future economy” buzzword moment. This time, it felt… real. With initiatives like six months’ free access to premium AI tools for Singaporeans taking selected courses, plus a broader push for companies to adopt AI at scale, the message was clear. Will Smith’s 2004 film “I, Robot” is no longer a product of Hollywood fiction.Naturally, that sparked the usual reactions. I remember turning to my 65-year-old retired dad during the broadcast and seeing him shaking his head and lamenting the loss of jobs for my future kids. Looking at the discourse online, I see the usual talking points:Will AI take our jobs? Will only tech workers benefit? Are we all supposed to suddenly become prompt engineers overnight? As someone who has written previously about surviving AI as a full-time writer (mind you, this was 2 years ago, when ChatGPT was the only game in town), and have since transitioned into a fintech, very pro-AI environment, here’s my honest take on the topic:
