Actions were taken against some 62 firms in 2025 for non-compliance with the Ministry of Manpower's enhanced measures to reduce heat stress for outdoor workers, said Minister of State for Manpower Dinesh Vasu Dash on Monday (May 11).Dinesh, who is also Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth, revealed this after visiting a Land Transport Authority (LTA) worksite in Tampines, currently occupied by homegrown construction firm Hwa Seng Builder (HSB).While the number represents a nearly 60 per cent drop from 2024, he cautioned against complacency, saying it is «still early» to see if this represents a downward trend.«We continue to put up our efforts and to be as proactive as we can be, to make sure that heat stress is not an issue that affects our workers and our businesses,» Dinesh said.

Several cars travelling along the Seletar Expressway (SLE) had a close call on Saturday (May 9) morning after some loose frames flew off the back of a tipper truck, narrowly missing the vehicles behind.A video of the incident, shared on Facebook page SGRV Admin the same day, showed the blue truck travelling in the middle lane before its load came loose and fell onto the road.The debris appeared to consist of metal and wooden frames.The incident occurred at around 6.35am near Mandai, according to the post caption, and the truck is believed to belong to waste recycling company Wah & Hua.

Two neighbourhood police centres (NPCs) in the Hougang and Serangoon planning areas will merge on July 6, the police announced on Monday (May 11).The merger, involving Serangoon NPC and Hougang NPC, is part of the transformation of frontline operations to better address evolving security challenges and community needs, the police said.«The merging of NPCs aims to optimise limited police resources by combining smaller NPCs serving adjacent areas into a larger operational base.» Following the merger, Serangoon NPC will be retained, while Hougang NPC's service counter will be renovated before re-opening as Hougang West Neighbourhood Police Post (NPP), tentatively by the fourth quarter of 2027.Enhanced deployment flexibilityPolice said they expect the merger to enhance their deployment flexibility, while also improving operational effectiveness.«The community policing unit in the merged NPC can organise larger scale community policing events.»The merged crime strike force will also have better coordination and control in dealing with more complex crimes and incidents," the police explained.

SINGAPORE — Unhappy with a woman he knew, a man sent letters containing a slice of pork each, along with her information, to multiple mosques.Bill Tan Keng Hwee, 62, who appeared in court via video-link on May 11, committed the offences as he wanted the recipients at these places of worship to harass the woman.Tan was sentenced to a year and three months' jail after he admitted to three counts of engaging in conduct that wounded the religious feelings of three Muslim complainants.He also pleaded guilty to a harassment charge involving the woman.Deputy Public Prosecutor Selene Yap said: «The accused's actions threaten the very fabric of our multi-racial/religious society.»Such actions must meet with the strongest of disapprobation by the court and a clear signal must be sent to deter others from engaging in such anti-social and divisive behaviour."Details that could identify the woman, known as C1 in court documents, cannot be disclosed due to a gag order to protect her identity.[[nid:735383]]

Six Singaporeans were injured on Saturday (May 9) when the minibus they were travelling in crashed along a mountain road in Indonesia, reported local media outlet Detik. Footage of the accident circulating online shows the vehicle careening down the road and crashing into a telephone pole.The impact caused the pole to tilt and almost fall over.The accident took place at 12.40pm local time along the route, which is popular with tourists travelling to and from Mount Bromo, reported local media. The vehicle was ferrying the six tourists from the mountain to Surabaya, when it encountered alleged brake failure, said the Indonesian traffic police unit, Detik reported.According to the group's tour guide, Yopi, the minibus' brakes failed about 300m before the crash, causing it to go out of control on the sloping road and hit four other vehicles.All the injured were reportedly taken to a hospital in Probolinggo City for treatment.

Officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and Singapore Customs have foiled an attempt to smuggle some 9,000 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes in an inbound-container on April 21.In a news release on Monday (May 11), the law enforcement agencies said the 20-foot container was targeted for enhanced checks at Pasir Panjang Scanning Station based on a risk assessment conducted by ICA's Integrated Targeting Centre and Customs' data analytics.The container, with its consignment of goods declared as «Smart LED bulb», was instead found with 9,000 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes during further checks.According to Customs, the estimated value of the duty-unpaid cigarettes seized is about $1,168,675.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) will be establishing a new Cyber Command unit to tackle evolving digital threats, Minister of State for Home Affairs Goh Pei Ming announced on Monday (May 11).To launch in July this year, the Cyber Command is set to consolidate existing cybercrime and anti-scam capabilities across the SPF under a single command and improve the police's capabilities, Goh said.Goh, who is also the Minister of State for Social and Family Development, was speaking at the Anti-Scam Conference 2026 held from May 11 to May 13.The conference saw attendees from over 20 countries in Southeast Asia, Europe and the Middle East, as well as international organisations, industry partners and local stakeholders.SPF has partnered the French National Police's International Security Cooperation Directorate, the UAE Ministry of Interior, and the International Security Alliance to organise this conference.

Residents of a Housing and Development Board (HDB) block in Serangoon have allegedly resorted to keeping their windows closed and not hanging out their laundry due to a neighbour feeding pigeons over the past eight years.A video posted on Instagram by paper artist Chia Ching Kai, 46, shows a flock of pigeons outside a high-floor unit at Block 302 Serangoon Avenue 2.The birds could be seen resting on the block's rooftop, the unit's clothes drying rack, and even on its window grills. «There is an entire column of units that couldn't put out their laundry, or even keep their kitchen windows open,» Chia wrote in his post, adding that some neighbours said the issue had been ongoing for the past eight years.According to the 46-year-old, an elderly female occupier of the said unit has been attracting pigeons with her feed.«(It's) raining bird shit on everything below,» he added.The video also shows significant bird droppings on the facade wall, clothes drying rack of a lower floor unit, and on the ground floor.
