A 62-year-old man was found dead at the foot of a HDB block in Toa Payoh on Monday (Aug 31) afternoon. The incident happened at about 2.05pm at Block 205 Toa Payoh North, which is in the vicinity of Braddell MRT station.A photograph of the scene shown to AsiaOne shows a blue police tent placed over the body beneath a stack of flats near a games court.The police also set up a cordon on the ground floor area.In response to media queries, the police stated that they do not suspect any foul play based on preliminary investigations.They added that the man was pronounced dead at the scene by a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) paramedic.Police investigations are ongoing.On the same afternoon, police and SCDF officers responded to an incident involving two teenage girls found sitting on a seventh-floor ledge at Block 130 Lorong 1 Toa Payoh.The duo were brought to safety and taken to hospital.They were later apprehended under Section 7 of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act.

Dry weather conditions, along with warm and humid nights, are expected to continue in the first fortnight of September, the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) said on Tuesday (Sept 1). During this period, daily maximum temperatures are likely to range between 33 and 35 deg C on most days, and could even exceed 35 deg C on a few days, the weatherman said.There may not be much reprieve at night, with conditions forecast to be «warm and humid».Minimum temperatures are expected to stay above 27 deg C on most nights, the agency added.But localised short-duration thundery showers are also expected over parts of the island in the late morning and afternoon on some days.«Fair and occasionally windy conditions are expected on most days, especially during the first week of September,» MSS said.Singapore may experience hazy conditionsTurning to dry conditions in the region, MSS said it has observed an escalation in the hotspot and smoke haze situation.It noted that dense smoke haze was observed over southern and central Sumatra and various parts of Kalimantan on most days since around Aug 21.

Four people were taken to the Singapore General Hospital after a fire broke out at a Housing and Development Board (HDB) block in Serangoon on Tuesday (Sept 1) afternoon.The incident happened at about 2.45pm in a third-floor unit at Block 8 Lorong Lew Lian, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a Facebook post that evening.SCDF said that the fire, which involved the contents in the unit's living room, was put out using a water jet.«During the firefighting operation, an unconscious person was found in the living room. Firefighters brought the person out of the unit and commenced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR),» SCDF said.The person was subsequently taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, along with three others, who were assessed for smoke inhalation and breathlessness. About 30 people were evacuated from the affected block by police and SCDF officers as a safety precaution.The cause of the fire is under investigation.[[nid:743880]]editor@asiaone.com 

One person has died after a fire broke out at Block 8 Lorong Lew Lian in Serangoon on Tuesday (Sept 1) afternoon.AsiaOne had earlier reported that the victim was among four persons taken to the Singapore General Hospital.He was found unconscious in the third-floor unit and brought out by firefighters, who then commenced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in an earlier statement posted on its Facebook.Speaker of Parliament Seah Kian Peng, who is also MP for Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC, took to Facebook to share an update on the incident.He said that he was on his way to attend a wake when he was alerted to the fire at Block 8 Lorong Lew Lian — located in the oldest precinct of his Braddell Heights ward.«Very unfortunate and sad that the occupant did not survive the fire. I have known him for many years now and in fact, last saw him not so long ago. »As he has been a resident here for many years and is by nature a friendly person, he will be missed," the fifth-term MP wrote in his post.

SINGAPORE — As search efforts continue for the nine Singaporeans missing in the Nepal floods, deceptive AI-generated photos of them are spreading across social media.In a TikTok post on Aug 31, the fake photos are shared alongside real ones, leaving social media users none the wiser.The post has already garnered over 140,000 views and close to 300 comments.Such images may hinder rescue operations, diverting attention away from credible information, said a Singapore Red Cross representative.The nine missing Singaporeans have been identified as Rengarajan Prabu, Shalinny Deavy Elan Sozan, Subramaniam Diraviam, Rajesvaran Ayyavoo, Estee Loeh, Ghosh Aditi, Ng Kit Kuen, Shubakshi Rawla and Sumit Rawla.They have been uncontactable since Aug 26, when flash floods swept through parts of Tibet and Nepal.As at Sept 1, the death toll was over 1,000, with another 4,000 still missing.Rengarajan, Shalinny, Subramaniam and Rajesvaran were travelling with the agency, Leaf Holidays Treks and Expedition.

More than 111,000 pet cats have been licensed in Singapore, Minister of State for National Development Alvin Tan said in a Facebook post on Monday (Aug 31). Tan was marking the end of the two-year transition period under the Cat Management Framework, which began on Sept 1, 2024. He wrote: «Big thanks to all cat owners who stepped forward to microchip and license your pet cats during this period!» In July, Tan said around 66,000 pet cats, or about seven in 10 cats, had been licensed in Singapore. Since then, the number has risen to more than 111,000, said Tan. «Microchipping and licensing our pet cats enhance traceability and owner accountability, and make it easier to identify and reunite lost cats with their owners,» he wrote.

Singaporeans can now drive a GetGo car across the Causeway and into West Malaysia, with the car-sharing company launching a new cross-border feature on Tuesday (Sept 1).Called Drive to Malaysia, the feature allows eligible GetGo users to pick up a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP)-registered vehicle from a nearby location in Singapore and drive anywhere in West Malaysia, including Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur.Unlike cross-border taxis and ride-hailing services, which typically transport passengers between fixed pick-up and drop-off points, users are not restricted to specific drop-off points and can drive around West Malaysia for the duration of their booking.GetGo said the feature is aimed at Singaporeans looking for a more flexible alternative to traditional cross-border car rentals, which can involve placing a deposit, as well as collecting and returning vehicles at rental outlets.Bookings must be at least 12 hours long and can last up to five days. They can be made up to 30 days in advance.Users can cross into Malaysia through either the Woodlands Causeway or Tuas Second Link and are allowed to drive anywhere in West Malaysia.

A 68-year-old man is assisting with ongoing police investigations after he allegedly knocked down a sambar deer along the Kranji Expressway (KJE) on Sunday (Aug 30) night.The incident happened at about 8.20pm along the expressway towards the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE).A four-second video of the aftermath, taken by a passing motorist, shows the injured deer crouched on the leftmost lane of the expressway. It is seen with its mouth open and appearing to breathe heavily, possibly indicating distress or shock.A trail of an unidentified substance, possibly from the mammal, is seen in front of it.Some debris, which appears to be broken glass, is also scattered across the lane.In response to AsiaOne's queries, the police confirmed that they were alerted to a traffic accident involving a van and a sambar deer, adding that police investigations are ongoing.AsiaOne has reached out to the National Parks Board for an update on the sambar deer's condition.

Two people were taken to hospital after they were spotted sitting on a ledge of a multi-storey carpark in Toa Payoh on Monday (Aug 31). Photos of the incident shared by an AsiaOne reader today showed two youths seated on a ledge on the sixth floor of a multi-storey carpark at Block 130 Lorong 1 Toa Payoh.At least one fire engine and one emergency ambulance were seen at the scene. In response to AsiaOne's queries, the police said that they received a call for assistance at about 3.15pm at the aforementioned location.  Two female teenagers aged 17 and 18, were taken conscious to the hospital. They were subsequently apprehended under Section 7 of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act 2008, the police added. Under the Act, the police have the power to arrest anyone believed to be a danger to themselves or others.AsiaOne has reached out to the Singapore Civil Defence Force for more information.

A total of 10 men, aged between 28 and 77, will be charged in court on Tuesday (Sept 1) for their alleged involvement in separate molestation cases.The cases took place between July 2025 and June this year, the police said in a news release on Monday night.Among the 10 cases, the youngest victim was a 16-year-old girl with severe intellectual disability. She was allegedly molested by a 76-year-old man at a sheltered walkway along Clementi Avenue 3 last October.Police said the matter was immediately reported to them by two bystanders, and they arrested the man, who was found to be a friend of a family member. He will be charged with one count of outrage of modesty of a vulnerable person.The second case involving a 21-year-old woman with intellectual disability happened on Sept 25, 2025. According to the police, a 40-year-old man allegedly molested his 21-year-old then-colleague at a garbage disposal room of a nursery along Jalan Lekar in Choa Chu Kang.The matter was reported to the police on the same day, and he was arrested within two hours.

Singapore's eastern region will be home to a new private not-for-profit acute hospital, with consistently high hospital bed occupancy rates in the east and central areas cited as a key reason for its location.In response to queries from AsiaOne, a spokesperson from the Ministry of Health (MOH) said that the decision was made after considering various factors, with hospital bed occupancy rates in the central and eastern regions being one of the key considerations.The spokesperson added that the new not-for-profit private acute hospital is also intended to provide more lower-cost private healthcare options for Singaporeans.According to MOH data, Singapore had 12,767 acute hospital beds in 2025, including 10,784 in public hospitals, 334 in not-for-profit hospitals and 1,649 in private hospitals.The new hospital, which was first announced in 2024, is expected to have between 300 and 400 beds.

The 42-year-old Singaporean man with cerebral palsy, who was carried up Malaysia's Batu Caves by his brother during Thaipusam, has died.News of his death was shared by his brother, Suresh Vanaz, in an Instagram (IG) post on Sunday (August 30).Suresh shared a notice of his brother Gunaseelan's wake in the post. The notice featured a Manchester United logo in the background and stated that Gunaseelan died on Saturday.«With a very heavy heart that I share the heartbreaking news that my beloved brother, Gunaseelan, has passed away peacefully,» Suresh wrote.Describing his brother's death as a «sudden loss», he said Gunaseelan would «always hold a special place» in his heart.The post drew numerous messages of condolence from Suresh's IG followers.One wrote that Suresh should be «truly proud» of himself for caring for Gunaseelan «while protecting his dignity and keeping his respect intact», describing it as «one of the greatest acts of love anyone can give».

Singapore is deploying a specialist Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team from the police to assist in the identification of dead bodies in Nepal after deadly floods tore through the Nepal-China border on Aug 26.The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said in a statement on Monday (Aug 31) afternoon that the deployment is in line with the Nepal government's request.Speaking to the media on Saturday, Nepal Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal said Kathmandu needs foreign help in technical areas such as rescuing people stuck in tunnels, identification of dead bodies and DNA testing.Singapore's deployment of personnel was conveyed by Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan when he spoke with his Nepali counterpart.
