Author: Fri, 2019-10-18 23:34 Khaled Abbas has been appointed group head of wholesale banking at Gulf International Bank (GIB). A seasoned banker with more than two decades of experience, Abbas assumes the role after having served as GIB’s country head in the UAE, where he oversaw growth in the market. Prior to joining GIB, Abbas was executive vice president and regional head of wholesale banking at the Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank for eight years. He previously held senior positions at Samba Financial Group and Banque Saudi Fransi. Abbas has a bachelor’s degree in business studies from the Lebanese American University in Beirut and executive education degrees from both Darden Business School at the University of Virginia and INSEAD. Abdul Aziz Al-Helaissi, group CEO of GIB, said: “Abbas’ lengthy experience of building and managing wholesale banking divisions in the region supports GIB’s strategy and its continued focus on growth and diversification across the region. “While GIB has long been a leader in wholesale banking, and in serving large corporate clients and financial institutions, I am confident that under Abbas’ leadership, our position and the value we offer our clients and partners will continue to grow.”  GIB was established in Bahrain in 1975, and commenced operations the following year. In 2017, it became the first foreign domiciled bank to be granted approval from the Saudi Arabia Council of Ministers to establish a local commercial bank in the Kingdom. Dakar Rally stars gear up for ‘thrilling’ Saudi race challenge

Fri, 2019-10-18 23:43 RIYADH: Dakar Rally drivers are gearing up for a “thrilling and exciting” challenge when the world-famous desert race is staged in Saudi Arabia for the first time next year. The Kingdom will host the event from Jan. 5 to 17, 2020 with top racers from around the globe traveling thousands of kilometers through inhospitable terrain in cars, trucks and on quad bikes and motorcycles. The rally will begin in Jeddah and follow a tough route through desert, sand dunes and mountainous areas taking in NEOM, the Red Sea Project, Riyadh and Qiddiya. French driver Stéphane Peterhansel, a 13-time winner of the Dakar Rally, revealed that he was initially surprised to hear that the competition had been moved from Africa to Saudi Arabia. “However, after doing some research, I realized that Saudi Arabia was a very wonderful and suitable country for the rally. It has different terrain types, and I expect us to have a perfect track. The vast desert gives me hope that the 2020 Saudi Dakar Rally will be more thrilling and exciting than Africa,” he said. Five-time Dakar Rally winner and fellow French driver, Cyril Despres, said that racing in Saudi Arabia would be a new adventure that could only be experienced by those who lived up to its challenges. “When I heard that the Dakar Rally was moving for the first time to the Middle East, I remembered the words of its founder, Thierry Sabine, who said that if you liked exploring the African continent, you would also love exploring other parts of the world,” he added. Positive move British rally raid motorcycle rider, Sam Sunderland, who won his category in the 2017 Dakar Rally, said he was delighted to be participating in the Saudi race. “I believe that this change is good, as I have lived in Dubai for 10 years, having adapted well to the Middle East’s atmosphere. When I heard that the Dakar Rally was moving for the first time to the Middle East, I remembered the words of its founder, Thierry Sabine, who said that if you liked exploring the African Continent, you would also love exploring other parts of the world. Cyril Despres, French driver “Exploring a new area is a positive move for the Dakar Rally, and I am certain that everyone who practices this sport is excited to explore a new ground for racing,” Sunderland added. ED Racing Team driver, Issa Al-Dossari, said the main reason he had taken part in Rally Qassim was to prepare for the Dakar challenge. “We will be using two cars in the rally. We look forward to raising the level of preparedness for many coming global events. But this does not mean that we will not compete for the top places.” Al-Dossari invited sports fans to visit the team’s headquarters at Date City to see equipment and meet its members. The team must participate in two different cars, the first driven by Al-Dossari with his French navigator Sébastien Delaunay, and the second with Emirati Abdallah Al-Huraiz behind the wheel and Ali Hassan navigating. The first stage of Rally Qassim began on Friday in Umm Sidra covering a distance of 170 km, with stage two raced over 200 km. Meanwhile, entry registrations for the Dakar Rally are still open in all categories at https://www.dakar.com/en/the-competitors/register. Author: Fri, 2019-10-18 23:37 HESINKI: The general supervisor of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief), Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah met Jouni Hemberg, the executive director of Finn Church Aid (FCA), on Thursday in the Finnish capital, Helsinki. Al-Rabeeah presented the Kingdom’s relief and humanitarian efforts through KSRelief, which has implemented 1,062 projects amounting to almost SR14 billion ($3.7 billion) in 45 countries. He highlighted the efforts to support the brotherly Yemeni people through many projects such as the “Masam” mine clearance project, prosthetic centers, the rehabilitation of Yemeni child soldiers and the assistance provided to Yemeni refugees in Somalia, Djibouti and inside the Kingdom. He also pointed to efforts to help the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and Malaysia. Al-Rabeeah also spoke of the challenges impeding the center’s efforts in Yemen due to the Houthi violations, noting that “they were not able to keep the center from fulfilling its noble humanitarian message and delivering aid to the beneficiaries.” KSRelief is operating with all transparency and is even assisting hospitals controlled by the Houthis. During the meeting, they discussed the possibility of strengthening bilateral cooperation and exchanging experiences in the humanitarian field. Al-Rabeeah invited FCA to attend the second Riyadh International Humanitarian Forum in February. Jouni Hemberg praised KSRelief’s charity work around the world. Meanwhile, KSRelief signed two executive programs to treat the Yemenis injured in Aden in partnership with a number of private sector hospitals in Aden governorate. The contracts were signed by Ahmed bin Ali Al-Beiz, assistant general supervisor of the center for operations and programs, under which health and medical care will be provided to the targeted persons. The director of the department of medical and environmental aid, Dr. Abdullah bin Saleh Al-Moallem, said that in cooperation with the Yemeni Ministry of Health and Population the center signed two executive programs for the treatment of injured Yemenis worth $320,000, benefitting more than 100 injured people. This was part of the initiative launched by the center in accordance with the directives of King Salman to treat those wounded in Aden and Abyan in August. Earlier, Al-Rabeeah, met with the Finnish minister of state for family affairs and social services, Ella Makeba, as part of his official visit to Finland. During the meeting, held in the Finnish capital Helsinki, Al-Rabeeah briefed Makeba on Saudi Arabia’s humanitarian work around the world. He highlighted KSRelief’s support for the health sector in needy countries and its global volunteer programs and campaigns being carried out in line with the Saudi Vision 2030 reform plan. Makeba lauded KSRelief’s “great” humanitarian efforts on behalf of the Kingdom which, over two decades, has delivered $87 billion (SR326 billion) in aid to 81 countries. Since 2014 more than 1,011 humanitarian aid programs worth $3.5 billion have benefitted 44 countries, primarily Yemen, Palestine, Syria, Somalia, Pakistan, Indonesia and Iraq.       Main category: Saudi ArabiaTags: FinlandKSRelief KSRelief hosts seminar with UN on role of humanitarian aidKSRelief chief, European Parliament official discuss cooperation prospects

Giant puppets’ musical show hits high note among Saudi festivalgoers

Fri, 2019-10-18 23:49 ALKHOBAR: A musical show involving giant puppets has been hitting a high note among visitors to a popular Saudi festival. The models, standing 12 meters tall, have drawn big audiences to Alkhobar Corniche where performances have been taking place as part of Tanween Season. Three huge puppets made up a family consisting of the father, donned in a white thobe and traditional Arabic head piece, the mother in a black abaya, and their son wearing a green Tanween T-shirt. Children watching the show sang along to Saudi folk songs as puppeteers using special machinery brought the giant characters to life. Tanween Season, in the Eastern Province, is a 17-day event that runs until Oct. 26, with talks, workshops, discussion panels, and performances built around this year’s theme of “play.” Activities are aimed at all ages and are designed to be family friendly. HIGHLIGHTS • The Tanween puppets are putting on theater performances for the first time, accompanied by a traditional Saudi band. • Saudi, French, Belgian and Spanish talent have combined to stage the show at Alkhobar Corniche until Saturday. “There’s a wide range of different experiences for visitors when they visit Ithra (the King Abdul Aziz Center for World Culture, in Dhahran) or the installations outside. Our goal is to deliver a message: How to use play in a different, creative way that introduces a myriad of ideas and culture,” the event’s head of performance, Anas Al-Ratoee, told Arab News.Spanish delights The Tanween puppets are putting on theater performances for the first time, accompanied by a traditional Saudi band. Saudi, French, Belgian and Spanish talent have combined to stage the show at Alkhobar Corniche until Oct. 19. “The Giant Puppets is a Spanish band, known as Carros de Foc, that usually performs traditionally in parades and festivals, where these 12-meter giants walk among people. “We added the Saudi culture to it through traditional music performed by a local band. We wanted to depict a scene from a normal day in the life of a Saudi household; the dynamic between a father, mother and child,” added Al-Ratoee. Muna Hassan, from Dammam, said her younger brother had thoroughly enjoyed the performance. “I was very happy to see him so excited and to see events like this catering to his age group.” Main category: Saudi ArabiaTags: Tanween Tanween Creativity Season launched with 232 events in Saudi ArabiaIthra hosts events as part of Tanween Cultural Season
