Ο Ισραηλινός πρωθυπουργός Μπενιαμίν Νετανιάχου δήλωσε σήμερα ότι όποια απόφαση και αν λάβει το Διεθνές Ποινικό Δικαστήριο, που ερευνά τις επιθέσεις της Χαμάς στις 7 Οκτωβρίου και τη στρατιωτική επίθεση του Ισραήλ στη Γάζα, δεν θα επηρεάσει τις ενέργειες του Ισραήλ αλλά θα μπορούσε να δημιουργήσει ένα επικίνδυνο προηγούμενο. «Υπό την ηγεσία μου, το Ισραήλ δεν θα αποδεχθεί ποτέ καμία προσπάθεια του ΔΠΔ της Χάγης να υπονομεύσει το θεμελιώδες δικαίωμα στην αυτοάμυνα», ανέφερε σε δήλωσή του στην εφαρμογή Telegram. «Αν και οι αποφάσεις που θα λάβει το δικαστήριο της Χάγης δεν θα επηρεάσουν τις ενέργειες του Ισραήλ, θα θέσουν ένα επικίνδυνο προηγούμενο που απειλεί στρατιώτες και δημόσια πρόσωπα», πρόσθεσε. Ένα από τα κορυφαία τηλεοπτικά κανάλια του Ισραήλ, το Channel 12, μετέδωσε την περασμένη εβδομάδα ότι η κυβέρνηση ανησυχεί για την πιθανότητα να εκδώσει το ΔΠΔ εντάλματα σύλληψης σε βάρος του Νετανιάχου και άλλων αξιωματούχων, για φερόμενες παραβιάσεις του διεθνούς δικαίου στη Λωρίδα της Γάζας. Σύμφωνα με το κανάλι, το πρωθυπουργικό γραφείο «συνεδρίασε εκτάκτως» για το θέμα αυτό. Ένας εκπρόσωπος της κυβέρνησης δεν απάντησε αμέσως σε ερωτήσεις σχετικές με το ρεπορτάζ αυτό. Το Ισραήλ δεν είναι μέλος του ΔΠΔ και δεν αναγνωρίζει τη δικαιοδοσία του. Τα Παλαιστινιακά Εδάφη έγιναν μέλος του ΔΠΔ το 2015. Ο εισαγγελέας Καρίμ Χαν είπε τον Οκτώβριο ότι το Δικαστήριο έχει δικαιοδοσία επί πιθανών εγκλημάτων πολέμου που διέπραξαν οι μαχητές της Χαμάς στο Ισραήλ ή οι Ισραηλινοί στη Λωρίδα της Γάζας. Η ομάδα του ερευνά επί του παρόντος πιθανά εγκλήματα στη Γάζα και, όπως είπε, όσοι διαπιστωθεί ότι παραβιάζουν τον νόμο θα λογοδοτήσουν. Το ΔΠΔ έχει 124 μόνιμα μέλη και μπορεί να ασκήσει διώξεις σε πρόσωπα για εγκλήματα πολέμου, εγκλήματα κατά της ανθρωπότητας, γενοκτονία και επίθεση. Υψηλά επίπεδα άγχους και στρες για οικονομικά τους εμφανίζουν οι Κύπριοι σύμφωνα τα προκαταρκτικά ευρήματα του Δείκτη Χρηματοοικονομικής Ευημερίας που παρουσίασε το Financial Wellbeing Institute (Ινστιτούτο Χρηματοοικονομικής Ευημερίας) κατά τη διάρκεια της ημερίδας με θέμα «Η Σημασία της Διά Βίου Μάθησης στην Ενίσχυση της Χρηματοοικονομικής Παιδείας» στο ξενοδοχείο Hilton Park στην Λευκωσία. Σύμφωνα με ανακοίνωση του Ινστιτούτου, η ανάλυση των αποτελεσμάτων της έρευνας αποκάλυψε σχετικά αυξημένα επίπεδα άγχους και στρες σχετικά με οικονομικά θέματα, ένδειξη που ενδέχεται να επηρεάζει αρνητικά την ψυχική υγεία και την παραγωγικότητα των πολιτών. Για παράδειγμα, ένα στα τέσσερα άτομα δηλώνουν με έμφαση ότι τα οικονομικά ζητήματα που τα απασχολούν τους προσκαλούν στρες, ενώ ένα στα πέντε δηλώνουν με έμφαση ότι τα οικονομικά προβλήματα που αντιμετωπίζουν μονοπωλούν τη σκέψη τους σε καθημερινή βάση. Επιπρόσθετα, μόνο ένα στα τρία άτομα φαίνονται να είναι οικονομικά ανθεκτικά και να δηλώνουν απόλυτη σιγουριά ότι είναι σε θέση να καλύψουν μια έκτακτη οικονομική ανάγκη ύψους 800 ευρώ αποκλειστικά με δικά τους χρήματα, χωρίς να χρειαστεί να δανειστούν, ενώ λίγο περισσότερο από ένα στα δύο άτομα τείνουν να δηλώνουν έλλειψη χρηματικών αποθεματικών (rainy day funds) που θα τους επέτρεπαν να καλύψουν έξοδα διαβίωσης για τρεις μήνες σε περίπτωση που απωλέσουν την κύρια πηγή εισοδήματός τους. Επιπρόσθετα, η μεγάλη πλειοψηφία των συμμετεχόντων εξέφρασε αισθήματα οικονομικής ανασφάλειας για το μέλλον, όπου, ενδεικτικά, το 30% των ερωτηθέντων δηλώνουν ότι το αυξημένο κόστος ζωής είναι ο κυριότερος παράγοντας που απειλεί την οικονομική τους ασφάλεια, ενώ το 33% τείνουν να δηλώνουν ότι τα οικονομικά προβλήματα τους θα είναι χειρότερα στους επόμενους 12 μήνες. Όπως αναφέρεται, η πρωτοβουλία του Ινστιτούτου για τη δημιουργία του Δείκτη Χρηματοοικονομικής Ευημερίας (Financial Wellbeing Index) ξεκίνησε το 2022, με τον πρωταρχικό σκοπό την αξιολόγηση της χρηματοοικονομικής ευημερίας του ενήλικου πληθυσμού στην Κύπρο. Η επιστημονική ομάδα του Ινστιτούτου ανέπτυξε ένα εξειδικευμένο ερωτηματολόγιο, περιλαμβάνοντας ερωτήσεις κλειστού τύπου, οι οποίες είναι σχεδιασμένες για να παρέχουν μια ολοκληρωμένη αξιολόγηση των διαφορετικών διαστάσεων της χρηματοοικονομικής ευημερίας. Αυτές οι ερωτήσεις οργανώθηκαν γύρω από τρεις κεντρικούς πυλώνες: το οικονομικό άγχος, τα επίπεδα οικονομικής άνεσης, και την αντιληπτή οικονομική ασφάλεια και εμπιστοσύνη. Σημειώνεται πως η επόμενη δειγματοληπτική έρευνα, η οποία θα διεξαχθεί εντός του πρώτου εξαμήνου του 2024, θα επιχειρήσει να εκτιμήσει εκ νέου τα επίπεδα χρηματοοικονομικής ευημερίας στον ενήλικο πληθυσμό και να καταγράψει τις διαχρονικές τάσεις αυτής της διάστασης. Τονίζεται επίσης ότι ο Δείκτης Χρηματοοικονομικής Ευημερίας δύναται να αποτελέσει ένα θεμελιώδες εργαλείο για την ανάλυση των επιπτώσεων διαφόρων πολιτικών, δράσεων και πρωτοβουλιών στην χρηματοοικονομική ανθεκτικότητα και ευημερία των Κυπρίων πολιτών. Ως τέτοιο, μπορεί να αξιοποιηθεί για την αξιολόγηση και τη συνεχή βελτίωση των πρωτοβουλιών που στοχεύουν στην προαγωγή της χρηματοοικονομικής ενημέρωσης και εκπαίδευσης, τόσο σε εθνικό όσο και σε διεθνές επίπεδο. Η διαδικασία αυτή είναι καθοριστική για τη διασφάλιση μιας σταθερής και ανθεκτικής οικονομικής βάσης για τον πληθυσμό, συμβάλλοντας σημαντικά στην βιώσιμη οικονομική ευημερία. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο το Ινστιτούτο «ευελπιστεί να συμβάλει στην υλοποίηση της Εθνικής Στρατηγικής η οποία βρίσκεται υπό την αιγίδα της Κυπριακής Επιτροπής Χρηματοοικονομικού Αλφαβητισμού και Παιδείας (ΚΕΧΑΠ)». Ο Τούρκος πρόεδρος Ρετζέπ Ταγίπ Ερντογάν καταδίκασε σήμερα την απάντηση των αμερικανικών αρχών στις συνεχιζόμενες φιλοπαλαιστινιακές διαδηλώσεις σε πανεπιστήμια στις ΗΠΑ. «Εμείς, όπως και ο υπόλοιπος κόσμος, παρακολουθούμε τα γεγονότα στα αμερικανικά πανεπιστήμια την τελευταία εβδομάδα με μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον», είπε ο Ερντογάν σε ένα συνέδριο για την Παλαιστίνη στην Κωνσταντινούπολη. Nine businesses in Seychelles are among those that have registered their products for copyrights and showed their products in an exhibition at the National Museum in Victoria on Friday. The exhibition, held by the Department of Trade, is part of activities to mark World Intellectual Property Day, which is celebrated on April 26 annually. Intellectual property (IP) covers creations of the mind, such as inventions, literary and artistic works, designs, symbols, names and images used in commerce. Patents, copyright and trademarks protect such property. A senior trade officer in the Department of Trade, Aissata Dia, told reporters that this year her department «wanted to do something different and show what talents exist in Seychelles, what new creations there are as well as the new designs. We wanted to show that things are happening in the country and that people are registering their work.» Over the years, they mainly held workshops aimed at educating people about the subject. «Over the past three years we have seen an increased interest in registering through the number of people who have reached out asking for more information to protect themselves,» she said. Dia said, «We also realise that in Seychelles registration is mainly dominated by copyrights and trademarks,» and added that this might be because having a patent tends to be a bit more difficult and costly to obtain. She revealed that following last year's workshop and requests from the participants, «the government is assisting them with their applications to protect their intellectual properties, especially when making a break-through on international markets.» The Trade Department is finalising a scheme that will allow Seychellois businesses to use a fund to register their intellectual properties overseas. The European Union on Friday added Chinese-founded online retailer Shein to its list of digital companies that are big enough to come under stricter safety curbs. The company joins Facebook, TikTok, X, YouTube and others on a list of «very large online platforms» which have more than 45 million monthly active users in the European Union. From the end of August -- four months after the designation -- Shein will have to abide by tougher rules set out in the Digital Services Act (DSA), one of the EU's landmark laws against online platforms. They include implementing measures to «protect consumers from purchasing unsafe or illegal goods, with particular focus on preventing the sale and distribution of products that could be harmful to minors,» the European Commission said. Shein, which is headquartered in Singapore, has said it has around 108 million monthly active users in the 27-nation EU. Reacting to the announcement, Shein said it would comply with the rules. «We share the commission's ambition to ensure consumers in the EU can shop online with peace of mind, and we are committed to playing our part,» said Leonard Lin, global head of public affairs at Shein. Beyond the EU, Shein has faced criticism over alleged exploitation of low-paid factory workers and arguments it promotes hyperconsumerism and causes damage to the environment. - EU probes - Brussels has flexed its legal muscle against the world's biggest digital platforms, launching investigations against TikTok, X and Chinese retailer AliExpress. Another Chinese shopping app, Temu, is expected to be added to the EU's list after announcing in April that it has around 75 million monthly active users after entering the EU market a year ago. Under the DSA, the platforms must assess the specific risks posed to Europeans' rights and safety by the content they publish -- or the products on sale in the case of online marketplaces like Amazon and Shein -- and submit a report to regulators. They must also provide an external audit once a year to verify compliance. The largest platforms are also subject to increased transparency requirements, with the obligation to provide access to their data to researchers approved by Brussels. The EU has taken tougher action against China-linked companies in recent months. Popular video sharing app TikTok, owned by China's ByteDance, has faced intense scrutiny in the EU -- and beyond. India's six-week-long election resumed Friday with millions of people lining up outside polling stations in parts of the country hit by a scorching heatwave. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is widely expected to win a third term in the election, which concludes in early June. But turnout in the first round of voting last week dropped nearly four points to 66 percent from the previous election in 2019, with speculation in Indian media outlets that higher-than-average temperatures were to blame. Modi took to social media shortly before polls re-opened to urge those voting to turn out in «record numbers» despite the heat. «A high voter turnout strengthens our democracy,» he wrote on social media platform X. «Your vote is your voice!» The second round of the poll -- conducted in phases to ease the immense logistical burden of staging an election in the world's most populous country -- includes districts that have this week seen temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). India's weather bureau said Thursday that severe heatwave conditions would continue in several states through the weekend. That includes parts of the eastern state of Bihar, where five districts are voting Friday and where temperatures more than 5.1C above the seasonal average were recorded this week.
