Appeal hearing for Pritam Singh's conviction, sentence set for Nov 4

The appeal hearing for Workers' Party chief Pritam Singh has been set.Singh's lawyer Andre Jumabhoy told The Straits Times that the hearing will be on Nov 4 at 10am.Singh was fined a total of $14,000 in February after the court found him guilty on two counts of lying under oath to a parliamentary committee. He had said earlier that he would appeal his conviction and sentence, which is the maximum fine for each charge. After a 13-day trial in October 2024, Deputy Principal District Judge Luke Tan in his judgement ruled that Singh had «wilfully» lied to the Committee of Privileges about how he dealt with the untruth that former WP MP Raeesah Khan told in Parliament on Aug 3, 2021.Khan had lied about accompanying a sexual assault victim to a police station and repeated the false claim in Parliament on Oct 4 the same year.Despite Singh's sentencing, he was able to contest in the General Election on May 3 as his penalties did not meet the threshold to be disqualified.

Singapore must strike a balance between maintaining high standards and promoting efficiency within the wealth management sector, Minister for National Development and Deputy Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), Chee Hong Tat said.Speaking at a doorstop interview on Wednesday (July 9), Chee said that Singapore needs to take a «risk-proportionate approach» to capture new opportunities while remaining a «trusted financial sector».He was speaking on the sidelines of a visit to DBS Bank headquarters, where he met with relationship managers to discuss the bank's plans to grow their wealth management business.«We want to maintain high standards. At the same time, we also want to make it convenient and business friendly for our clients,» Chee said, adding that the two objectives are not mutually exclusive. He highlighted three of MAS' recent initiatives to boost efficiency within Singapore's wealth management sector, saying that MAS has been «working closely» with industry partners and financial institutions (FIs).

SINGAPORE — Singaporeans can expect more debate in the upcoming 15th Parliament, with today's uncertain world and the need for more policies to tackle the attendant challenges, and more MPs in the House. But this does not mean that parliamentary sittings must go on for longer, as what is important is the quality of the debate, said Speaker of Parliament Seah Kian Peng.Noting a trend of more parliamentary questions being filed in the previous term of Parliament, Seah sounded a note of caution against having this become a numbers game.«I hope we don't get to a point where MPs are filing questions for the sake of clocking numbers — I think that is not necessary and not very productive,» he said in a July 1 interview with The Straits Times about the role of Speaker, and his plans if elected. On June 20, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced that the Government intended to propose Seah's election as Speaker when Parliament reopens on Sept 5.Seah has served as Singapore's 11th Speaker since 2023.

The fakes were passed off as genuine and sold at a fraction of the price of the real items – a fake passport cover, for instance, was priced at $159, compared with $560 to $945 for the real thing.Louis Vuitton Malletier (LVM) discovered the infringements in July 2022 and conducted a sting operation. A representative made test purchases worth $2,100 from Mr Ng’s first Instagram account “emcase_sg”. LVM confirmed the goods were counterfeit and issued a cease-and-desist letter in March 2023.

Closer economic integration key to Asean's stability and transformation: PM Wong

Continued peace, stability and growth in Asean, with its population of around 700 million, will transform the region, and this will translate to better jobs, opportunities and living standards for its people, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has said.In a video released on his YouTube channel on Saturday (July 5), PM Wong emphasised the importance of strength, unity and cooperation among the bloc's 10 members, adding how stability and growth can be achieved through closer economic integration. Recognising the rising geopolitical tensions and profound changes happening around the world, he noted that it is not the first time the region has met with uncertainty.«Our founding leaders knew we were better off facing challenges together, rather than alone,» he said, adding that Asean was formed in 1967 during the Cold War, another period of turmoil.«So we came together, respecting each other's sovereignty and focusing on mutually-beneficial co-operation.»That unity helped lay the foundations for peace and stability in our region," he stressed.

The first Housing Development Board (HDB) Build-to-Order (BTO) project in the new Sembawang North neighbourhood will be launched in the upcoming July 2025 BTO sales exercise.Sembawang Beacon, a 775-unit, 53ha development, is expected to be ready in about three years' time and will offer flat types ranging from 2-room Flexi to 5-room and 3Gen flats, HDB said in a release on Sunday (July 6).The design of Sembawang Beacon will draw inspiration from the area's rich maritime heritage, it added, as Sembawang was once home to the British Naval Base in the 1920s, where distinctive black-and-white houses served as quarters for naval officers.Hence, the residential blocks and drop-off porches will feature white facades outlined by bold black frames, incorporating elements reminiscent of colonial houses. The maritime theme extends to the development's recreational spaces, including a playground featuring nautical motifs and elements such as a lighthouse play structure.
