Asmara, 24 June 2019 - Eritrea’s senior delegation led by Mr. Hagos Gebrehiwet, Head of PFDJ Economic Affairs, is participating at the two-day Ministerial Coordinators' Meeting on the Implementation of the Follow-up Actions of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). The two-day meeting in Beijing is being attended by over 80 African ministerial-level officials. Speaking at the opening event, Mr. Wang Qishan, Vice President of China said that the meeting is an important step for China and Africa to jointly implement the outcomes of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit held last September. The participating African delegates on their part said that China-Africa cooperation will serve as exemplary in the development of cooperation among developing countries.

Likewise, at an occasion organized in Massawa on 18 June, staff members of the PFDJ and national associations assumed responsibility to support three families of martyrs. In the same vein, residents of Adi-Bari, Mendefera sub-zone, have ploughed farm lands of 16 families of martyrs. Members in the civil service and Eritrean Defense Forces in Barentu sub-zone also conducted popular campaign at the Barentu Martyrs Cemetery. Residents of Adi-Qual sub-zone also conducted similar popular campaign at the Adi-Quala Martyrs Cemetery.

The commemoration events in the cities of UK, London, Birmingham, Manchester, New Castle, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield and Nottingham Coventry was highlighted with artistic and cultural performances portraying the significance of Martyrs Day. At the occasion in London in which a number of nationals and friends of Eritrea took part, the Eritrean Ambassador to the UK and Northern Ireland, Mr. Estifanos Habtemariam said that independence, sovereignty, peace, stability and unity are the fruits of the heavy sacrifice the Eritrean people paid and called for renewing pledge to martyrs trust. In the same vein, at the event conducted in Grand Rapids, Michigan the nationals contributed 2700 Dollar in support of families of martyrs. Likewise, at the commemoration ceremony the nationals residing in Doha, Qatar, conducted they contributed 1350 Qatari Riyal in augmenting the Martyrs Trust Fund. The Eritrean Ambassador to Qatar, Mr. Ali Ibrahim called on the nationals to live up to the expectations of martyrs and strengthen contribution in support of families of martyrs. Nationals residing in Toronto, Canada, also commemorated Martyrs Day with candle vigil and various programs portraying the significance of Martyrs Day.

At the commemoration event held in Riyadh in which a number of nationals took part 27,667 Saudi Riyal was contributed towards augmenting the Martyrs Trust Fund. Speaking at the event, Ms. Weini Gerezgiher, Charge d’Affairs at the Eritrean Embassy, said that June 20 is a day in which national renew their pledge to live up to the expectation of martyrs and that it is the responsibility of every citizen to support families of martyrs. Indicating that Martyrs Day is a remainder of the arduous struggle for independence and safeguarding the national sovereignty the Eritrean people have to go through, Mr. Abdurahman Imam, Chairman of the Eritrean community in Riyadh, called on national to strengthen contribution in the implementation of the national development programs. At the commemoration event held in Jeddah, the Eritrean Consul in Jeddah, Mr. Saleh Sabe said that Martyrs Day has deep meaning for a number of Eritrean heroes and heroines paid their dear life so the Eritrean people live in dignity and harmony as people and country. At the occasion members of the National Union of Eritrean Women contributed 3,000 Saudi Riyal in support of families of martyrs. Similarly, nationals residing in Dubai commemorated Martyrs Day 0n 19 June with candle vigil and various programs. Mr. Mohammed Mahmud Selim, Eritrean Consul in Dubai and Northern Emirates said that supporting families of martyrs is not to left to the Government only and called on the nationals to reinforce contribution. In related news, staff members at the Eritrean Embassy in Addis Ababa and the Permanent Mission of Eritrea at the African Union and Economic Commission of Africa and Eritrean nationals commemorated Martyrs Day with candle vigil.

Ladies and Gentlemen,Let me first express my congratulations and gratitude for the various preparations undertaken by our people inside the country and abroad to commemorate Martyrs Day with the requisite ceremony.  The central theme of this commemoration is to renew our solemn pledge to continue the legacy of our Martyrs above and beyond paying homage to them.Our Martyrs constitute the multiplying factor of the resources and power of this country by virtue of their heroism and the ultimate price that they have paid.  They vanquished and altered what seemed an asymmetric power equation in favour of the forces of independence.  After independence, they demonstrated – for the second time – similar heroism to maintain and safeguard the sovereignty of the country.  The heroic feats represent an unparalleled contribution in the annals of our history as an independent State and the overall progress of our nation.  Besides the ultimate price that they paid with their precious lives, the value system and culture that our Martyrs have bequeathed us has bolstered the power, resilience and moral inspiration of our people.  This is a priceless heritage.  The examples and high moral standards that they have set; the value system they bequeathed to us through their self-sacrifices, cannot be compensated by mere tributes and words of gratitude.  We have, therefore, moral obligations and responsibilities to renew our pledge to them on solemn occasions such as today.  The colourful celebrations carried out at our 28th Independence Anniversary by our people inside the country and abroad under the theme: “Resilience through Resilience”, was, in fact, a genuine testament of this pledge.Ladies and Gentlemen,As it will be recalled, an 11-point road-map of our development programmes was laid out during our (28th) Independence Anniversary.  This takes into account and is predicated on the prevailing international, regional and domestic realities and trends. The road-map is not only forward looking; it is also aimed at recouping lost opportunities as well as scaling imposed impediments.  How will this be implemented?  What capabilities will be marshaled?  Which resources?  Under what timeline?  Through which methodologies and modalities? Natural, material, technological, financial… and other resources are evidently important requirements for development.  But above all, what is of paramount importance is human resource; that is endowed with quality, expertise and experience. But, quality, expertise and experience are not enough in and all by themselves irrespective of size or numerical magnitude.  Effective human capital will also require a multiplying factor.  In other words, it must be anchored on commitment; that discards greed and self-exaltation; that is relentless, creative and industrious; and, that is organized efficiently.  In a nutshell, we have to go back to our roots; to the attributes that defined our identity.  The origin of our identity is indeed the value system bequeathed to us by our Martyrs!Glory to our Martyrs!Victory to the Masses:20 June 2019

Prayer services in memory of martyrs that paid their lives for national independence and safeguarding the national sovereignty were conducted today, 19 June at the Saint Michael Church and Al-Khalfae Al-Rashidin Mosque here in the capital. The prayer service at Saint Michael Church was held in the morning hours in the presence of His Holiness Abune Lukas, Secretary of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church, religious leaders and a number of the faithful. Speaking at the event, Merigeta Simon Beyene from the office of the Patriarch called on the faithful to live up to the expectation of those that gave their precious lives for independence and safeguarding the national sovereignty and consolidate unity. Similarly, a prayer service in memory of the fallen heroes was held at the Al-Khalfae Al-Rashidin Mosque led by Sheik Salem Ibrahim Al Muktar, General Secretary of the Central Office of Eritrean Mufti. At the event, Sheik Salem Ibrahim said that it is the responsibility of every citizen to support the families of the fallen heroes and heroines that gave their dear lives for independence and national sovereignty.

At the meeting conducted in Addis Ababa today, 19 June, Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed expressed his gratitude to President Isaias as well as the people of Eritrea for the solidarity they demonstrated during his mourning. Prime Minister Dr. Abiy expressed readiness of his government to further consolidate the peace process underway and the ties of cooperation between the two countries. The Eritrean delegation also participated in the tree seedlings planting program that was conducted at the compound of the Prime Minister’s office. Indicating that the peace agreement signed between the two countries attests to the bold initiative the two leaders took, Mr. Yemane Gebreab said that commendable progress has been achieved within one year of the agreement.

The Eritrean community members in Uganda have commemorated Martyrs Day, 20 June with candle vigil on 16 June.   Asmara, 18 June 2019- The Eritrean community members in Uganda have commemorated Martyrs Day, 20 June with candle vigil on 16 June. Speaking at the event, Mr. Mohammed Suleiman, Eritrean Ambassador to Uganda, indicating that the Eritrean people have paid heavy human and material sacrifice in realizing their independence and national sovereignty, and that the new era of peace and cooperation is the result of that. Pointing out that to preserve and develop the country that was realized through heavy sacrifice of its sons and daughter is the responsibility of every citizen, Ambassador Mohammed called on the nationals to strengthen contribution in augmenting the Martyrs Trust Fund. The participants on their part pledged to continue the initiative they are taking to assume responsibility of supporting families of martyrs. In related news, staff members of the Ministry of Information organized a program in connection with Martyrs Day, 20 June. At the program that was conducted on 17 June at the ‘Hager Media’ Hall various programs were staged depicting the Martyrs Day.

The Government of Eritrea over the past 15 years has disbursed over 4.6 billion Nakfa in support of families of martyrs. Asmara, 18 June 2019- The Government of Eritrea over the past 15 years has disbursed over 4.6 billion Nakfa in support of families of martyrs. In the interview with Erina in connection with Martyrs Day 20 June, Mr. Zeray Tekleab, head of Families of Martyrs Wellbeing, said that according to proclamation 137/2003 the Government started to pay families of martyrs 500 Nakfa monthly since 2004 and that yearly the Government makes about 350 million Nakfa payment. Mr. Zeray went on to say that apart from the monthly payment, the Government has disbursed over 144 million Nakfa in support of needy families of martyrs and material support and training to enable families of martyrs become self supportive and productive members of the society. Mr. Zeray further stated that nationals living inside the country and abroad have also taken the initiative to support families of martyrs and that many have assumed responsibility to support more than one families of martyrs. Renovating residential houses and ploughing and collecting agricultural harvest has created spiritual satisfaction of families of martyrs, Mr. Zeray added.

President Isaias Afwerki today sent a letter to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.  In his letter, President Isaias expressed his sadness on the passing away of PM Abiy’s father, Mr. Ahmed Ali, and conveyed his condolences to the PM and his family.

Schengen Peace Foundation and World Peace Forum conferred the ‘Luxemburg’ Peace Award to Eritrea and Ethiopia for the 2018 initiative to promote peace and outstanding peace achievement. Asmara, 17 June 2019- Schengen Peace Foundation and World Peace Forum conferred the ‘Luxemburg’ Peace Award to Eritrea and Ethiopia for the 2018 initiative to promote peace and outstanding peace achievement. The awards were received by Mr. Negassi Kassa, Eritrean Ambassador to the European Union and Mr. Grum Abay, Ambassador of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to Luxemburg. At the ceremony conducted at the European Union Parliament Hall, Ambassador Negassi said that the peace agreement signed between Eritrea and Ethiopia has paramount importance for the two countries and the Horn of Africa region at large for sustainable peace and security, economic growth and regional cooperation. Ambassador Negassi went on to say that the people and Government of Eritrea are committed to consolidate and sustain the peace agreement and redouble effort to recoup the lost time and opportunities and dcalled upon partners and friends as well as the international community for their solidarity and support. The Luxemburg Peace Award is a joint prize awarded by the World Peace Forum and the Schengen Peace Foundation that is conferred for outstanding contribution for peace.

G. of Health Service at the Ministry of Health, said that supply of safe blood means saving and ensuring the continuity of life and that strong effort has been exerted to ensure the supply of blood nationwide. Indicating that commendable effort has been conducted to inculcate the culture of blood donation, Mr. Berhane expressed appreciation to the National Blood Donors’ Association for their contribution. Representing the World Health Organization, Dr. Yohannes Gebrat said that the yearly observance of the International Blood Donors’ Day has significant contribution in developing the awareness of the society on the importance voluntary blood donation. Commending those that are voluntarily donating and saving lives, Mr. Samson Gebreselasie, Chairman of the National Blood Donors Association, said that donating blood beyond saving lives gives spiritual satisfaction. The event was highlighted by various programs depicting the International Blood Donation Day.

In continuation of the individual and community initiatives to augment the martyrs trust fund, nationals residing in the UK contributed over 73 thousand Pound Sterling and 1000 USD. Asmara, 15 June 2019 – In continuation of the individual and community initiatives to augment the martyrs trust fund, nationals residing in the UK contributed over 73 thousand Pound Sterling and 1000 USD. According to report from the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, the contributors include the Committee of Martyrs’ in London, nationals residing in Manchester, Leads, Sheffield, New Castle, Birmingham, Eritrean Communities in Liverpool and Leicester, EPLF Pal Talk Group, members of Kidane-Mihret, Medhani-Alem, St. Michael and Betel Churches in the UK, as well as the Association of Nationals for Martyrs’ Families in Leads, Selam Association in Birmingham,Medhanie-Alem Association in Nottingham, YPFDJ members in Liverpool and other individuals.

The Chairman of the Transitional Military Council (TMC) of Sudan, Let. Gen. Abdul-Fattah Al-Burhan arrived in Asmara in mid-morning hours of today, June 14 for a working visit to Eritrea. Abdul-Fattah Al-Burhan arrived in Asmara in mid-morning hours of today, June 14 for a working visit to Eritrea. Upon arrival at the Asmara International Airport, Let. Gen. Al-Burhan was accorded warm welcome by President Isaias Afwerki. At a meeting the two leaders conducted extensive discussion at the State House, President Isaias expressed Eritrea’s support to the popular Sudanese uprising. President Isaias also applauded the Sudanese Armed Forces for its pivotal role in taking sides with the population at a crucial moment thereby enabling the country to return from the edge of collapse. President Isaias further underlined the need for all Sudanese political forces and population to participate in the perceptive transition phase the country is facing. Lt. General Abdul-Fattah Al-Burhan, on his part, expressed his profound appreciation of Eritrea's position on the Sudanese situation. This is "part and parcel of Eritrea's constructive stance in the past and that reflects the historic and close ties of the two countries, the General stated. Speaking to reporters, Presidential Adviser Mr. Yemane Gebreab said that the Government of Eritrea supports the Sudanese Transitional Military Council in its effort to bring peace and stability in the Sudan as well as to play its due role in this transitional period. Ambassador Abdul M. Osman, head of African Affairs at the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on his part said that he has deep respect for the Eritrean stance that the issue of Sudan should be resolved by the people of Sudan. At the event in which government officials and members of the Assembly of Angola, members of the diplomatic community and a number of nationals took part, Mr. Saleh Omar, Eritrean Ambassador to South Africa and Southern African countries, said that this year’s Independence Day anniversary is unique for it is being celebrated at the new era of peace and cooperation prevailing in the region. Ambassador Saleh reiterated that the Eritrean people have emerged victorious against all conspiracies and hostilities aimed at derailing their economic progress and called on the nationals to strengthen contribution in the national development endeavors. He also expressed appreciation to those that contributed for the success of the celebratory program. Ambassador Saleh also said the peace agreement signed between Eritrea and Ethiopia has opened a new era of peace and cooperation as well as good neighborliness in the Horn of Africa. Congratulating the people and Government of Eritrea, Ambassador Teta Antonio, State Secretary for External Relations of Angola, expressed his support to the self-reliance stance of Eritrea and the peace and cooperation unfolding in the Horn of Africa. At the event in which government officials, representatives of UN offices in Eritrea and other invited guests took part, Ms. Amina Nurhusein, Minister of Health, said that according to the report of the World Health Organization yearly 50 to 100 thousand women are becoming victims of Fistula and out of which about 15 thousand only get medical treatment due to various reasons. Minister Amina went on to say that Fistula victim women are found mostly in the developing countries. Pointing out that Eritrea is exerting effort to ensure that no woman suffers from the disease, Minister Amina called for putting in place patients waiting rooms in all Hospitals and conduct timely treatment as well as conducting sustainable awareness raising programs and provide educational opportunities to women with a view to increase their understanding  and awareness. The Representative of the UN Offices in Eritrea, Ms. Susan Ngongi on her part said that globally more than 800women are facing health problems associated with delivery including fistula and called for countries to renew their commitments to eradicate the disease within ten years. Indicating that the issue is not to be left to the Ministry of Health only, Ms. Tekea Tesfamicael, President of the National Union of Eritrean Women, stated that the union is working in cooperation with partners to bring about behavioral change. At the event prices and certificate of recognition was handed over to Dr. Habte Hailemelekot, Dr. Dawit Sereke and Sister Yirgalem Isak for their outstanding contribution in treating fistula patients.

A workshop on East African Consultation on the roles and contribution of youth to peace and security in Africa was conducted on 10 and 11 June at the Asmara Palace Hotel here in the capital. Asmara, 12 June 2019- A workshop on East African Consultation on the roles and contribution of youth to peace and security in Africa was conducted on 10 and 11 June at the Asmara Palace Hotel here in the capital. The workshop was attended by youth from 15 East African countries. Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Ibrahim Osman, head of Desks at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that the theme of the meeting and its objectives is of at most importance to the region which has been suffering from conflicts. Mr. Ibrahim went on to say that the youth that have been primary victims of conflicts must have the decisive role in promoting peace and security. Indicating that integrated effort brings sustainable success, Ambassador Fred Ngoga, Head of Conflict Early Warning at the African Union Commission, said that the youth are the driving forces for peace and security in their countries and that the workshop will have significant contribution in exchanging experiences and knowledge. At the workshop briefings were provided on conflict prevention and resolution, peace support operation, post conflict reconstruction and development, gender mainstreaming, humanitarian action, climate change, transnational organized crimes, piracy and maritime security, violent extremism as well as policies of IGAD and AU on youth and intervention of youth in ensuring peace and security. The participants on their part said that the workshop will have significant contribution in exchanging experiences among themselves and play due role in keeping peace and security in their countries.

At a ceremony held on 10 June, the head of Culture and Sports in the Central region, Mr. Endrias Asmerom indicating the significance of the competition in organizing carnivals, presented detailed report on the strengths and challenges of the preparations of the carnivals. The participants conducted extensive discussion on the report presented and adopted various recommendations.At the event Maj. Gen. Romodan Osman Aweliay, Governor of the Central region, and Mr. Yosuf Saiq awarded over prizes and certificate of recognition to winners in the various competitions.

Eritrea's Mehari Tsegai won the race and Ethiopia’s Tadese Asefa and Eritrean Petro Mamo settled second and third respectively. The first three winners received a 6 thousand, 4 thousand and 3 thousand Dollars respectively from Ambassador Zemede Tekle, Commissioner of Culture and Sport. Athletes who stood from 4th to 10th rank also received prizes from Maj. General Romodan Osman Awliay, Governor of the Central region. In the meanwhile Eritrean women athletes also competed in a half-marathon concurrent race, and Athlete Nazereth Woldu from the Central region, Athlete Kokob Tesfagaber from the Central region and Athlete Simret Merhawi from Denden Club stood from first to third respectively. The winners received 40, 20 and 10 thousand Nakfa respectively from the Minister of Tourism, Ms. Askalu Menkorious. Similarly, mass sport in which over 20 thousand people took part was also held.

According to report participating athletes from Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and South Sudan have arrived in Asmara in the evening hours of yesterday and athletes representing Sudan are expected to arrive today, 9 June.Upon arrival at the Asmara International Airport the athletes and their coaches were accorded warm by the heads of the National Athletics Federation of Eritrea. Speaking to Erina, Ms. Tadelech Bira, Coach of the National Athletics Team of Ethiopia said that she is enthralled to come to Eritrea at this historic period of peace. A once Berlin Marathon record holder, Coach of the National Athletics Team of Kenya, Patrick Macau on his part indicating that he competed with Athlete Zeresenay Tadese on several occasions expressed expectation that Asmara Marathon will be tough competition. According to the National Athletics Federation of Eritrea, over 60 athletes from Eritrea and various East African countries are expected to participate at the race that will start at 8 o'clock in the morning hours of tomorrow and that 16,500 Dollars has been allocated to winners. The Federation also said that mass sport will be conducted on the same day starting from 7 AM from City Park to Bahti Meskerem Square in which over 20 thousand people are expected to take part.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Weyni Gerezgihier, Charge d’Affairs at the Eritrean Embassy in Saudi Arabia, indicated that this year's Independence Day is being celebrated at a time of new era of peace and cooperation prevailing in the region and that is the result of unity and perseverance of the Eritrean people and its leadership. Ms. Weyni also expressed her firm belief that the national development program will be successfully implemented through popular participation. Ms. Weyni also gave extensive briefing on the diplomatic efforts being exerted by the Government of Eritrea with the objective of ensuring sustainable socio-economic development and regional cooperation. Mr. Abdurahman Immam, chairman of the Eritrean Community in Riyadh and its environs on his part, stating that the heavy sacrifices paid and the strong resilience and commitment the Eritrean people and Government demonstrated in the armed struggle for independence and in safeguarding national sovereignty attest to the high value the Eritrean people have for their independence. The popular campaign that is being conducted since March includes renovation of dirt road linking May-Aini to Quatit as well as water diversion schemes. Indicating that transportation has resumed in the area thanks to the popular campaign, residents called for sustainably alleviating the transportation challenges in the area pointing out the socio-economic significance of the dirt road. In other news, popular campaign was conducted in the premises of the martyrs’ cemetery in May-Dima, in connection to 20 June Martyrs’ Day.

According to the National Athletics Federation of Eritrea, Eritrea will participate through athletes from the all regions as well as members of the Eritrean Defense Forces. Indicating that the race will start from the City Park and will finish at the Bahti Meskerem Square covering 42 km, the National Federation said that 16,500 Dollars has been allocated to winners. The Federation also said that mass sport will be conducted on the same day starting from 7 AM from City Park to Bahti Meskerem Square in which over 20 thousand people are expected to take part.

Barentu, 06 June 1019- The vegetables farming projects initiated to support and improve the livelihoods of families of martyrs in the four sub-zones of Gash Barka region are registering encouraging results.Within the projects that are initiated by the Western Development Zone located in the sub-zones of Molki, Shambuko, Barentu and Laelai Gash 20 families of martyrs in each sub-zone have been provided with 10 hectares of land for group cultivation.According to Mr. Franco Kubaba, member of the coordinating committee of the projects, members of the Eritrean Defense Forces in the areas have contributed in the preparation of the land for cultivation including clearing the land and digging water wells.The beneficiaries on their part commending for the initiative that the Government is taking to improve their livelihoods, expressed resolve to work hard and contribute their part in stabilizing the local markets.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Solomon Kinfe, Charge d’Affairs at the Eritrean Embassy in Israel, said that the Eritrean people in the past 20 years have emerged victorious in the face of hostilities and conspiracies that have been targeting its independence and sovereignty and have embarked to a new era of peace and cooperation. Mr. Solomon also congratulated the people and Government of Eritrea. Indicating that the new era of peace has its own opportunities and challenges, Mr. Solomon called for strengthening organizational capacity and contribution in the national development drives. The event was highlighted by music performance by renowned artists including Artist Tekle Kiflemeriam (Wedi Tikul) from Eritrea.
