The head of Administration and Finance in the sub-zone, Mr. Tareke Abai on his part called for timely tax and rent payment so that the residents could become beneficiaries of equitable social service provisions. The participants called for organizing regular meetings with the residents to discuss the strengths and challenges in the implementation of the charted out development programs.

He also congratulated the people of Eritrea and Ethiopia. Mr. Mehari further expressed expectation that the Eritrean people will repeat the miracle demonstrated in the past in the realization of the national vision. The Chairman of the Holidays Coordinating Committee, Mr. Samsom Amanuel on his part stating the role and contribution of national organizations during the armed struggle for independence and safeguarding national sovereignty, expressed conviction that they will play due part in building prosperous nation. According to report representatives of the administrations of the Government of Victoria, friends of Eritrea and Eritreans, as well as representatives of Ethiopian communities delivered messages of support. Also speaking on the occasion, Associate Prof. Yemane Seyoum, Dean of Orotta School of Medicine and Dentistry, indicated that since its establishment in 2004 the School has graduated 285 in General Medicine and 35 in Dentistry and that has decreased the ratio of one doctor to 37 thousand patients during the first years of independence to one doctor to 16 thousand patients to-date. A representative of the graduating batch commending for the support the Government, parents as well as instructors displayed during their stay in the school asserted readiness to serve the people and Government with higher dedication.

At the meeting reports were presented including activities of Police Traffic, criminal investigation, control of natural calamities, promotion and information, relations between police and the public, lost and found money and property, police response to emergency calls, integration between police and persecutors, courts and other public institutions, control of under age alcohol consumption, and other issues relevant to police activities. The participants conducted extensive discussion on the reports presented and adopted various recommendations. At the event various prices were handed over to members of police for outstanding duty performance and other individuals for their cooperation in preventing crimes.

The comment was made at a meeting the nationals grouped as «Mahber Fnot Semaetat» conducted recently in Israel. According to report, following their pledge in 2018, 100 newly joined members have contributed 720 USD each mounting 72 thousand dollars in support of the martyrs’ families. The Ministry of Labor and Human Welfare has also sent the nationals full information of the families they are to support this year. Expressing readiness to reinforce contribution for the successful implementation of the national development endeavors and support of the families of martyrs, the participants indicated that they will strengthen organizational capacity and their attachment with the homeland.

At the meeting all heads of line ministries and departments in the regional office presented reports on the activities implemented and challenges encountered in 2018 and charted out programs for 2019. The Governor of the Southern region, Mr. Efrem Gebrekrstos called for strengthening contribution in the implementation of the development drives and members of the regional Assembly to play leading role. The meeting also adopted recommendations and resolutions including strengthening community based environmental sanitation activities, introduction of smokeless ovens, construction of waiting rooms for pregnant women at health facilities, creating conducive environment for increased students’ school enrolment, reinforcing water and soil conservation activities among others.

At an assessment meeting conducted recently, Mr. Omer Yahiya, administrator of the Gindae sub zone, stated that several development projects have been exerted including construction of two elementary schools in Hutsit and Endeli, renovation of water diversion schemes, machinery supported water and soil conservation activities, supporting the disadvantaged citizens, controlling fall armyworm as well as installation of water pipelines among others. Mr. Omer further indicated that various public demands including land allotment for residential purposes, introduction of renewable energy, provision of grazing area and farm land around Gindae town are yet to be addressed. Regarding 2019 development program, Mr. Omer stated that priority will be given to the alleviation of potable water supply in Demas, Dengolo-Laelay, Metkel Abet and Gindae town, finalizing construction of schools in Hutsit and Endeli, renovation of electric power lines and street lights. Participants also forwarded recommendations and called for area administrators to conduct extensive awareness raising campaigns aimed at ensuring environmental sanitation, replacement of ambulance that has been serving residents of Demas, Shebah, Metkel-Abet and Gahtelay administrative areas among others.

The Ministry of Agriculture branch in Nakfa sub-zone in cooperation with the sub-zonal administration and other stakeholders conducted commendable vaccination program in 11 administrative areas in the sub-zone with a view to ensure the health of livestock. Mr. Mohammed-Salah Mohammed-Ali, head of agriculture office, indicated that during the six days vaccination program over 37 thousand livestock have been vaccinated against external and internal animal diseases. Animal health expert Mr. Abraham Mesfun said that the program was in continuation of similar vaccination programs being conducted to ensure the health of livestock and increase productivity and called on the public to immediately report to nearby agricultural offices in case of observance of animal disease symptoms. The farmers on their part commending the sustainable vaccination programs in ensuring the health of their livestock, called for more awareness raising programs so that the farmers take the initiative of vaccinating their livestock.

According to Mr. Mehreteab Gebresillassie, coordinator of the four day training, the objective of the training was to narrow the gap of knowledge and experience among teachers and reinforce the teaching and learning process. The training included time and program management, lesson planning, class management and its contribution, creating conducive teaching learning atmosphere in class, as well as preparation of exams for evaluating the standard and capacity of students. The trainees discussed on the topics raised and called for the sustained organization of similar trainings. The event was attended by the First Vice President of South Sudan, Gen. Taban Deng Gai, other officials of South Sudan, members of Diplomatic Community as well as a number of Eritrean and Ethiopian nationals residing in South Sudan. Indicating that the Christmas celebration is being observed following the Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship between Eritrea and Ethiopia that was signed on 9 July in Asmara and the lifting of sanctions that was imposed on Eritrea, Mr. Yohannes Teklemicael, Eritrean Ambassador to South Sudan, congratulated the peoples of Eritrea and Ethiopia as well as the peoples of the region. Pointing out that the region that was compelled to war, migration and displacement for the past 80 years due to interference of external forces has now embarked to new era of peace and cooperation, Ambassador Yohannes said that the peoples of Eritrea and Ethiopia are committed to make up the lost opportunities. Ambassador Yohannes went on to say that Eritrean nationals in South Sudan have been contributing due part in the national development endeavors by strengthening their organizational capacity and unity and that the program is in continuation of the similar events the Eritrean nationals have been organizing with a view to solidify their unity and attachment with their homeland. Speaking at the occasion,  Gen. Taban Deng Gai on his part said that the relations between Eritrea and South Sudan goes back to the time of the armed struggle for independence and that the friendship and cooperation between the two countries  is developing from time to time. The event was highlighted by cultural and musical performances by Eritrean artists from Eritrea.

The Omhajer-Humera road that has been closed for 20 years is important road transporting people and goods from and to Eritrea-Ethiopia. The event was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Osman Saleh, Presidential Adviser, Mr. Yemane Gebreab, Commandor of the Western Front, Brig. Gen. Tekle Kiflai on the Eritrean side and Dr. Debretsion Gebremicael, President of the Tigray region, Mr. Gedu Endargachew, President of the Amhara region and Gen. Seare Mekonnen, Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian Armed Forces on the Ethiopian side. The opening of the Omhajer-Humera road is in continuation of the similar opening of the three boarder points, Debaisima-Bure, Serha-Zalambessa and Adi-Quala-Rama linking the two countries in accordance of the Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship signed on 9 July 2018. Upon arrival at the border point, the two leaders were accorded warm welcome by the residents of Omahajer and Humera, village elders, religious leaders as well as by members of the Armed Forces of the two countries.

According to report presented popular campaigns in which about 400 thousand people took part were conducted, a number of water projects in various sub-zones were renovated, new potable water supply projects were put in place and about 700 km of dirt roads were renovated. Like wise, elections of area administrators, managing directors and village coordinators were conducted, land distribution for cultivation was conducted and support for families of martyrs and disadvantaged citizens was conducted.Job opportunities have also been created for a number of citizens in the region at the big agricultural projects in Gerset, Fesko, Ad-Omar, Kerkebet and Banatom and Alebu factories. Regarding agricultural activities, 193 thousand hectares of land has been cultivated and over 850 thousand quintals of crops has bee collected and abundant animal fodder has been collected. The reports also indicated that commendable educational and services have been provided from the 485 educational and 79 health facilities. Speaking at the event, the Governor of the Gash Barka region, Mr. Fessehaye Haile called on all concerned institutions to boost contribution for the successful implementation of the set out development programs of 2019.

According to the reports presented in 2018 over 15 km of asphalt roads were renovated, 12 km dirt road linking Belza with Bietgergis was renovated and bridges were constructed, and in 2019 roads linking Godaif-Sembel, Vilaggio-Adi-Sogdo as well as Hazhaz-Mihram Chira will be renovated with asphalt. Regarding health service, 97% of children in the region have been vaccinated, successful Measles and Rubella vaccination program has been implemented and the number of pregnant women delivering at health facilities has increased. According to report by the Ministry of Agriculture branch in the region, nine villages have allotted lands for construction of residential houses and two thousand of those beneficiaries were women. Families of martyrs and elders in 66 villages were also allotted over two thousand hectares of farm land. Regarding alleviating potable water supply in Asmara, a chain of water reservoirs have been constructed on strategic hills of Asmara and already some have become operational and the ongoing activities of putting in place water pipelines will continue in 2019. Speaking at the meeting the Governor of the Central region, Maj.Gen. Romodan Osman Awelyai indicated that elections of community magistrates will be one of the priority task in 2019 and land allotment for residential houses will continue.

Youth in the Southern Red Sea region had significant contribution in the implementation of 2018 development programs. The meeting was attended by Mr. Beyene Russom, Eritrean Ambassador to Kenya and Minister of Interior of Kenya, Mr. Fred Matiangi. It is to be recalled that President Isaias Afwerki conducted a visit to the Republic of Kenya on 15 December and held discussion with President Uhuru Kenyatta on strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

G. of the National Radio, said that Dimtsi Hafash has played significant role in the victory of the struggle for independence and safeguarding the national sovereignty, in ensuring social justice, raising the political awareness of citizens as well as participation of the public in the national development drives. Mr. Girmai went on to say that currently Dimtsi Hafash equipped with modern technology has been able to reach citizens through out the world. Mr. Girmai commending all that worked hard to realize the mission of Dimtsi Hafash through out those years, called for more efforts and contribution for better outcome. At the event Magazine that was published in connection with the 40th anniversary of the founding of Dimtsi Hafash was distributed to participants. Dimtsi Hafash established in 1979 in Fah, Sahel, is disseminating programs in the nine Eritrean languages.

Indicating that the priority of the association is to ensure the health of the society, the President of the Association, Prof. Negasi Leake said that more focus is given to expansion of membership, organizing sustainable training programs and providing up to date medical information among others. Dr. Negasi went on to say that the reduction of the death rate of mothers and children, expansion of vaccination coverage, control of HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria as well as ensuring the basic health service to the public are among the achievements the association has registered. At the conference research papers were presented regarding the causes and consequences as well as treatment of Hemophilia, TB, Fistula, and intestine diseases.

The group is led by Dr. Liya Tadesse, the Deputy Minister of Health of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and other government officials. At a welcoming ceremony held at Asmara Palace, Ms. Amina Nurhussen, Minister of Health, indicated that the Governments of Eritrea and Ethiopia have agreed to work together in all sectors aimed at strengthening the existing peace and friendship cooperation and that the coming of the medical doctors attests to that. During their stay in Eritrea the Ethiopian doctors will have the opportunity to work alongside Eritrean doctors and exchange experiences, Minister Amina added. Expressing the occasion as “historical”, Dr. Liya Tadesse said that the historic peace and friendship agreement reached between President Isaias Afwerki and Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed is the biggest gift to the peoples of the two countries. Dr. Liya underlined that this first cooperation in the health sector attests to the developing good neighborliness and far sighted relation between the two countries. The Ethiopian medical doctors will provide free medical service for two months in the referral hospitals of the Central, Anseba, Southern and Northern Red Sea regions.

At the fourth round Shingrwa contest that was conducted nationwide, a total of 660 contestants participated in three categories namely, singing, dancing and musical instrument. At the ceremony conducted in Cinema Roma in the presence of Government officials and invited guests, Mr. Asmelash Abraha, Director General of Eri-TV stated that the fourth round Shingrwa contest lasted for 18 months and witnessed highest number of contestants ever and extensive cultural diversity was reflected. Mr. Barnabas Mebrahtu, one of the directors and judges of Shingrwa Academy on his part indicating that in the first stage of the contest there were 446 contestants in singing category, 144 on traditional dancing and 70 others on traditional musical instrument. According to the verdict of the judges, Mr. Awet Teclemariam, the Traditional Dancing Group from Kunama Ethnic group, and Mr. Daniel Tesfamicael won the fourth round Shingrwa contest in the singing, dancing and traditional musical competition categories respectively. Shingrwa, literally means «tomorrow's star» in the Bilen language (one of Eritrea's nine ethnic groups).

At an activity assessment meeting conducted on 27 December and in which senior committee members of the Western Development Zone and head of the regional administration took part, activities worth over 24 million Nakfa in which over 282 thousand residents took part have been implemented. The activities include construction of dams and micro-dams, road and bridges construction and maintenance, maintenance of social service provision institutions, potable water supply projects, construction and maintenance of residential houses, boosting agricultural production as well as soil and water conservation and environmental sanitation activities. According to report, the development programs have been implemented with integrated effort of the public, Bidho and Segen Construction Companies, as well as the National Service Training Center, Crops and Livestock Corporation and administrations at various levels. Brig. Gen. Teklai called on all concerned bodies at this time of peace prospect to strengthen participation on the part of all concerned bodies in the national development endeavors.

Indicating that the public has a system of resolving issues based on cultural and social values, Minister Fauzia said that in 2003 community magistrates were established under the proclamation No. 132, and the mandate of the community magistrates was classified under the proclamation No. 167 issued in 2012 and as a result the public was able to receive legal service in its vicinity. Ms. Fauzia pointed out that legal process has four pillars of justice including the provision of open, equitable, timely and efficient as well as free and accountable legal service to the public. Minister Fauzia went on to say that the national law takes into account the socio-economic, political, cultural and historical foundation of the society, and called on all concerned government and public institutions and the public to give due attentions for their implementation. In the Southern Red Sea region there are eight community magistrates and 24 judges including 8 women. The participants conducted extensive discussion on the report presented and the efforts that should be undertaken to strengthen community magistrates.

At the meeting activity reports of 2018 were presented by concerned officials on the implementation of social, economic and development programs vis-à-vis strengths and challenges encountered. According to the reports, 580 thousand hectare farm land has been cultivated with various crops and that bumper harvest has been collected, vegetables and fruits have been cultivated on 100 hectares of land and 9 thousand quintals has been collected as well as 1400 quintals of animal fodder. Traditional fishermen have been provided with modern fishing and a good result has been registered. More over, various activities have been implemented including expansion and maintenance of water projects, cultural and sports activities, elections of area administrators, managing directors and village coordinators among others. Indicating that commendable activities have been conducted through strong participation of the residents, Ambassador Mohammed-Seid Mantay, Governor of the Southern Red Sea region, called for integrated efforts for better outcome. Ambassador Mohammed-Seid also said that expansion of water projects, development of educational and health provisions, improvement of livelihoods of the public are among development programs for 2019.

At the ceremony held at the Genet Luul State House in Addis Ababa, Ambassador Semere delivered President Isaias Afwerki’s message of good will to President Sahlework and the people and Government of Ethiopia. Indicating that he will work for strengthening and preserving the relations between Eritrea and Ethiopia, Ambassador Semere said that the new era of hopeful prospect will ensure the aspirations of peace and development of the peoples and governments of the two countries. Expressing good will to President Isaias, President Sahlework congratulated Ambassador Semere for his appointment for the historic mission. President Sahlework also expressed expectation that Ambassador Semere will play due role in strengthening the existing peace and friendship between the two countries. President Sahlework went on to say that Eritrea and Ethiopia have the potential and capacity of contributing for the peace and development among IGAD members and Africa and that needs integrated efforts.

At the meeting reports were presented by all departments of the region, national associations and Police and the participants conducted extensive discussion and adopted recommendation on tax collection and challenges, progress of agricultural activities, as well as on issues related to food security. The assembly also discussed on the progress of projects, construction of dams, micro-dams, educational and health facilities.Following discussion on the reports presented, the Regional Assembly adopted recommendations and resolutions on the overall activities, including land preparation for cultivation for the next rainy season, enhanced environmental sanitation activities, vaccination programs, strengthening the teaching and learning process and on other relevant issues. Speaking at the occasion, the Governor of the Anseba region, Mr. Ali Mahmud called for enhanced contribution so as to ensure the success of the development programs of 2019.

At the workshop that focused on the role of conscious youth in controlling the infection of HIV/AIDS, Mr. Habte Gebremeskel, head of Promotion and Information unit at the Ministry of Health branch in the Central region, stated that even though praiseworthy result is registered strong effort yet remains until the infection of the deadly virus declines to zero sum. Mr. Habte went on to say that in Eritrea new HIV infections has declined below 1% and called on the society and administrations and organizations to strengthen contribution until the infection of the virus is totally eradicated. Stating that every day 5 thousand new infections occur worldwide, Mr. Habte said that of the 20 HIV infections that occur on mothers, 5 infants are infected during delivery and 3 others during breastfeeding.

The comment was made during a seminar Ms. Tekea Tesfamicael conducted on 22 and 23 December with members of the members of the 32nd round National Service and students of the National Vocational Center in Sawa. At the video-supported seminar, Ms. Tekea gave extensive briefing on various topics including the significance of empowering women, women and professionalism as well as women and education. Noting that the vision of the Union is to build economically developed nation where its citizens equally enjoy opportunities and rights regardless of their gender, Ms. Tekea called on women to take advantage of the opportunities created for them and play due part in the national development drives. Indicating that owing to the sustainable awareness raising campaigns being conducted nationwide, conducive atmosphere is being created through which women can participate in all sectors, Ms. Tekea called for strengthening contribution in the effort to empower women. She also expressed the union’s readiness to ensure women’s rights and continue create job opportunities.

Massawa, 24 December 2018- The Northern Red Sea region reported that in 2018 praiseworthy activities have been conducted in soil and water conservation aimed at controlling soil erosion and boosting productivity. The report was made at an assessment meeting held on 21 and 22 December in the port city of Massawa. At the meeting reports were presented on the progress of the social, economic, developmental, and agricultural as well as infrastructure programs and participants conducted extensive discussion on the achievements registered and challenges and shortcomings encountered. According to the reports, water catchments on 17 thousand hectares of land were renovated in the sub-zones of Nakfa, Afabet, Shieb, Ghinda, Foro and Massawa as well as 64 thousand meters of terraces were constructed. Regarding potable water supply, the Gelalo and Irafaile water projects were finalized and micro-dams in Endlal, Bakla, Foro, Maret, Meo and Laba were renovated. Likewise, 48 thousand hectares of land was cultivated and that crops cultivated in 27 thousand hectares are in good condition and call was made on farmers to stay vigilant in case of prevalence of pests and immediately report to near by agricultural offices. Concerning health services, commendable efforts have been conducted to ensure quality health services and community based environmental sanitation programs. Furthermore, the construction of health center in Ela-Babu, Adobha sub-zone was finalized; new schools have been constructed in areas in which the residents lead nomadic life. The Governor of the Northern Red Sea region, Brig. Gen. Tekle Lebsu indicated that most of the charted out development programs have been implemented and called for integrated activities for better outcome. Brig. Gen. Tekle Libsu went on to say that finalizing the elections of community magistrates as well as finalizing the construction health and education facilities are some of the charted out development programs of 2019.

Keren, 23 December 2018 – The Anseba region administration conducted its annual activity assessment meeting on 19 and 20 December. According to activity reports presented, over 54 thousand hectare farm land have been cultivated with various crops, registering an 8% increase than that of last year, and vegetable and fruits farming increased by 21% reaching 1062 hectares this year. Regarding water conservation activities, it was indicated that 6.7 million Nakfa worth dam, three water diversion schemes and one micro-dam were constructed in Habero, Elabered and Hagaz sub zones and that over 954 thousand tree seedlings were planted in Adi-Tekelezan, Elabered and Halhal. In a bid to ensure potable water supply, four new water systems were implemented and five wells were dug with over 14 million Nakfa and that two water projects were renovated in the region. It was also reported that the task will be continued with great vigor in 2019. The report further noted that a survey was conducted on the implementation of 38 million Nakfa worth water projects on schools, villages and semi-urban centers. Participants on their part, finally, called for alleviation of water supply of Enkubert, establishment of cultural and heritage study center, expansion and renovation of Kere-Edirba dirt road, enhanced village regrouping initiatives, and wild life and forest conservation activity among others. Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Ali Mahmud, Governor of Anseba region, reminded concerned government bodies, partners and residents to play due role in this new era of peace prospect to integrate effort and reinforce contribution.

In connection with the New Year, women artist have staged artifacts exhibition in front of the Ministry of Education. Asmara, 23 December 2018 - In connection with the New Year, women artist have staged artifacts exhibition in front of the Ministry of Education. The exhibition was officially opened by Ms. Askalu Menkorios, Minister of Tourism. The exhibition includes palm leaf, hides and wood crafts and other traditional household utensils made from traditional materials. The coordinator of the program, Ms. Nigisti Gebremeskel said that the objective of the exhibition is to acquaint traditional artifacts and culture of the Eritrean society. The head of the National Union of Eritrean Women branch in the Central region, Ms. Elsa Gebreyohannes said that the program is part of the effort to strengthen artistic capacity of women. Ms. Elsa went on to say that some of the artists were provided the opportunity to get training in India. They were also provided with soft loans and have improved their livelihoods. The exhibition will stay open until 30 December.

At the inauguration ceremony, Director General of Water Resources in the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment, Mr. Mebrahtu Iyasu, commended local residents for the participation during the establishment of the project and he called on them to properly use and maintain the facilities in order to ensure its availability for future generations. Mr. Hailemicael Iyob, Director General of Agriculture and Land at the Central region administration, added that the project was implemented through the cooperation of the regional administration, the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment, and local residents. Underlining that water is life and demands proper management, Mr. Tesfu Fesehatsion, administrator of Berik sub-zone, called residents to properly utilize and manage the water project. Notably, local residents, and women in particular, expressed their satisfaction with the project, noting that it will help alleviate their challenges and burdens, while also conveying their commitment to ensure that the project is properly maintained.
