The agreement for the Bagamoyo port project was signed in 2013 when various African organisations labelled the agreement as a “killer Chinese loan” and demanded that Jakaya Kikwete, former President of Tanzania reject the offer. Despite this, the offer was accepted. However, in January 2016, President John Magufuli came along and announced the suspension of the project. He said the government negotiated the project poorly and on conditions that would be equivalent to selling Tanzania’s sovereignty.

One of the biggest social media stories last week was of Tanzania’s Millard Afrael Ayo, who has become the first African journalist or media personality channel to hit one billion YouTube views. Indeed, he deserves our congratulations. His YouTube channel goes by his real name Millard Ayo. Yes, his website and social media handle as well. In this feat, he has been able to hit more views than some of the mainstream media houses in Africa.
