Apple's war on repair continues: Amazon now bans refurb Apple products from third parties

Apple has long understood that hardware products that last a long time result in falling unit sales, as customers opt to keep their old machines instead of buying the latest models; that's part of why the company led the charge that killed every single Right to Repair bill introduced last year -- less repairs leads to more «recycling,» which is Applespeak for dropping used units into giant shredders without harvesting any usable parts first.

Russia Deploys Its Avangard Glide Vehicle – the Unmatched Leader in Hypersonic Technology

On Oct. 12 CNBC reported that Russia had hit a snag in its development of its hypersonic weapon, because it was at the time unable to find a source for the critical carbon fiber components. The news agency stated that the Pentagon had doubts that the Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV) existed. Skepticism seems widespread. Some believe that Russia’s new super weapons are “virtual reality,” while others think they are “mostly hype.” In March, the National Interest cited Michael Kofman, a research scientist for the Center for Naval Analyses and a highly respected analyst, who offered his assurances that there was no chance Russia could field its hypervelocity boost-glide weapon by 2019.  But history has shown that those who believed it to be just a bluff have been proven wrong.

The Camp Fire has already claimed 5 lives in one Northern California town, and authorities expect that total to rise as firefighters are only just finding their way into the town of Paradise, a town in Butte County that was completely destroyed by the shockingly aggressive wildfire. Spurred on by strong winds, dry air and drought-starved brush, the Camp Fire exploded into view at around 6:30 am Thursday morning and remained completely uncontained as of Friday afternoon. California's acting Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency. Authorities believe that more than 1,000 homes have already been destroyed.

Your kids get to play freely with their friends, and you get some occasional free babysitting. According to government officials in Washington, DC, arrangements like this are violations of the law. They are cracking down on what they call an illegal “child development facility” operating without a license.

With New Patents Facebook Brings Us One Step Close to a Dystopian Future

This year Facebook filed two very interesting patents in the US. One was a patent for emotion recognition technology; which recognises human emotions through facial expressions and so can therefore assess what mood we are in at any given time-happy or anxious for example. This can be done either by a webcam or through a phone cam. The technology is relatively straight forward. Artificially intelligent driven algorithms analyses and then deciphers facial expressions, it then matches the duration and intensity of the expression with a corresponding emotion. Take contempt for example. Measured by a range of values from 0 to 100, an expression of contempt could be measured by a smirking smile, a furrowed brow and a wrinkled nose. An emotion can then be extrapolated from the data linking it to your dominant personality traits: openness, introverted, neurotic, say.
