CPF to keep interest rates unchanged from July to Sept

Interest rates for various Central Provident Fund (CPF) accounts — Ordinary, Special, Medisave and Retirement Accounts — will remain unchanged from July 1 to September 30, the CPF Board and Housing and Development Board (HDB) said in a joint news release on Tuesday (May 26).The interest rate for the Special, Medisave and Retirement Accounts (SMRA) will remain unchanged at the floor rate of 4 per cent per annum, as the pegged rate remains below the floor rate, the agencies said.SMRA interest rate is pegged to the 12-month average yield of 10-year Singapore Government Securities, plus 1 per cent, which was 3.09 per cent from May 2025 to April 2026. Meanwhile, the Ordinary Account (OA) interest rate will remain unchanged at the floor rate of 2.5 per cent per annum from July 1 to September 30, as the OA pegged rate remains below the floor rate of 2.5 per cent.This rate is computed based on the 3-month average of major local banks' interest rates, which was 0.32 per cent from February 2026 to April 2026.

The chief executive officer of a now-defunct cryptocurrency platform, Hodlnaut, was on Tuesday (May 26) charged in court for fraud by false representation.Zhu Juntao, 36, was handed three charges and could face jail time of up to twenty years, a fine, or both, for each charge, if he is found guilty.Hodlnaut was a crypto borrowing and lending platform which allowed its users to deposit their digital tokens to earn interest.The Singapore Management University alumnus was also co-founder of the said online platform that purportedly had over 30,000 users worldwide before it became defunct in August 2022 following financial difficulties. The police said on Tuesday that Zhu allegedly instigated his employees to make misleading statements on the company's official Telegram group chat and in official emails sent directly to some of its users between May and July 2022, following a sudden price crash of TerraUSD (UST).According to the police, Hodlnaut had allegedly asserted in these communications that it did not have direct exposure to UST and/or did not suffer losses arising from the UST crash.

14 arrested in crackdown on illegal cross-border transport services, vehicles impounded: LTA

14 people have been arrested for providing illegal cross-border ride-hailing services, said Senior Minister of State for Transport Sun Xueling in a Facebook post uploaded on Monday (May 25).Additionally, the LTA and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) also conducted a joint enforcement operation on Monday at both land checkpoints into Johor Bahru, at Woodlands and Tuas.Sun noted that these operations come after recent enhancements to cross-border taxi services, which have allowed licensed cross-border taxis to drop off passengers anywhere in Singapore, and in several parts of Johor, since May 4.She said that this operation was part of «continued efforts to safeguard commuter safety and protect the livelihoods of our local point-to-point drivers from illegal cross-border transport services.»«We will continue to work closely with our Malaysian counterparts to improve cross-border travel arrangements,» she added.

While the important and hard work that town council cleaners do often go unnoticed, their absence is noticeable to everyone, said Sengkang GRC MP Jamus Lim.He was sharing his thoughts on the estate cleaners of Anchorvale whom he treated to a farewell meal, according to a Facebook post on Monday (May 25).Associate Professor Lim, who is MP for the Anchorvale division of Sengkang GRC, explained that part of the team of conservancy contractors in the estate will be replaced after five years amid Sengkang Town Council contract renewals.«While I'm a little sad — having worked with some of these folks for more than five years now — I understand that (the) town council has to be prudent as it renews its contracts, evaluating past performance alongside other quality dimensions, as well as a competitive bid price,» he said.He added that he has «mixed feelings» about the cleaners' departure, and quoted William Shakespeare that «parting is such sweet sorrow».

Chong Pang City worksite incident: Metal bar slipped from workers' hands and damaged HDB block roof

The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) on Monday (May 25) released its findings into the Chong Pang Integrated Development (CPID) construction mishap, three weeks after a falling metal bar crashed through a nearby HDB roof.An investigation report submitted by the appointed Qualified Person (QP) stated that the incident happened during dismantling works when a metal bar slipped from the workers' hands. «The bar then struck a nearby material stacking rack, which caused the metal bar to deflect out of the work area and damage part of the roof of (the adjacent) Block 103 (Yishun Ring Road),» SLA said in its update issued on Monday night.A QP is a registered architect or professional engineer who is authorised to submit building plans to authorities, ensure regulatory compliance, and supervise structural works. In this instance, the QP's role was to investigate the incident and recommend remedial actions.

Household egg brand Seng Choon is among five farms that will be affected by land-use changes in Lim Chu Kang.The other farms are Bollywood Farms, Gan Aquarium, Gallop Kranji Farm Resort and Malaysian Feedmill Farms, CNA reported.The land-use changes were announced in a joint statement by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), the Ministry of Defence, the National Parks Board (NParks) and the Singapore Land Authority on Monday (May 25).«These changes arise from ongoing reviews of land use to meet Singapore's evolving needs,» the statement read.Land north of Lim Chu Kang, currently designated for defence, will be reallocated for agricultural developments in the future.Meanwhile, land south of Lim Chu Kang will be repurposed for defence uses.The statement explained that «careful planning» of Singapore's limited land is necessary to meet national needs, such as housing, defence, jobs, infrastructure and food production.Strategic land use changes are necessary to optimise scarce land resources to meet evolving national needs and ensure Singapore's continued growth and development, the statement said.
