The water resources of Kyrgyzstan should become the “core” of the long-term green economy model, Kyrgyz Economy Minister Oleg Pankratov told at the Green Economy Forum. He said that today the first draft of the Program for the transition to green economy in the Kyrgyz Republic for 2019-2023 has been prepared. “The water resources accumulated by the country's mountain ecosystems are sources for advancing the long-term priorities of the 2040 strategy. Namely, a source for improving the access of the population to drinking and irrigation water, for increasing the capacity of the energy sector, for the intensive development of the agro-industrial sector and other sectors of the economy. As is known, Kyrgyzstan is the only country in Central Asia, whose water resources are fully formed in its own territory,” he said. Pankratov explained that further for the introduction of green economy, Kyrgyzstan will have to develop and introduce a system of taxes and duties that stimulate the use of import of environmentally friendly technologies and reform the system of existing economic environmental management tools, including, for example, imposing penalties for environmental pollution and services and water use.
