China anunció este viernes el descubrimiento de un depósito de uranio 'supergrande' en el noroeste del país, según informó el Servicio Geológico de China, dependiente del Ministerio de Recursos Naturales del gigante asiático. El depósito se encuentra en el área de Jingchuan, en la Cuenca de Ordos, en la región de Mongolia Interior. Según el organismo, se trata del primer hallazgo de este tipo a nivel mundial en arenisca eólica, un entorno geológico hasta ahora poco explorado para este recurso estratégico. El descubrimiento, que incrementará de forma significativa las reservas de uranio del país asiático, las décimas a nivel mundial según un informe conjunto de 2020 de la Agencia de Energía Nuclear de la OCDE y la Agencia Internacional de Energía Atómica, refuerza la seguridad energética de China al reducir su dependencia de importaciones. Según los estándares establecidos por la Academia China de Ciencias Geológicas, un depósito denominado como 'supergrande' contiene más de 100.000 toneladas de óxido de uranio (U₃O₈), aunque las autoridades no han especificado la cantidad exacta en esta ocasión. La prospección ha sido posible gracias a la colaboración entre la Servicio Geológico de China, la Oficina de Geología Nuclear y la estatal Corporación Nacional de Petróleo de China (CNPC). Además, el hallazgo subraya el uso de tecnologías avanzadas para identificar recursos en la Cuenca de Ordos, una región rica en petróleo y gas que abarca más de 200.000 kilómetros cuadrados. El uranio es un recurso clave para la generación de energía nuclear y la industria armamentística debido a su capacidad para sostener reacciones nucleares. Este descubrimiento no solo representa un avance en la industria minera china, sino que también abre nuevas perspectivas globales para la exploración en ambientes similares, como las cuencas de Tarim, Junggar y Songliao. En 2012, China anunció el descubrimiento de otra mina de uranio en Mongolia Interior, ubicada cerca de la localidad de Daying. Esta mina, también clasificada como 'supergrande', contenía importantes reservas de uranio en areniscas. China, con más de 50 reactores nucleares operativos, busca reforzar su autosuficiencia energética mediante el desarrollo de tecnologías de prospección.
