Increased political polarisation has led to a proliferation of attacks against elected representatives, political candidates and party members. Verbal abuse and insults, harassment, threats and intimidation, as well as smear campaigns against politicians, occur regularly both online and offline, marking a serious degradation in the quality of political debate in the EU. During the 2024 European elections campaign, there were serious incidents in several countries. Nevertheless, acts of physical violence remain isolated and less frequent in the EU than in many other parts of the world. Violence is a risk to which politicians have always been exposed, including in democratic regimes. Organised crime and radicalised individuals or groups resort to violence to promote their political or economic agendas. EU countries have been unevenly affected; violence linked to organised crime has particularly affected certain regions, especially southern Italy, where it has proven difficult to eradicate. By contrast, violence driven by political radicalisation is a more recent phenomenon and increasingly affects all EU countries – albeit to varying degrees – and tends to flare up during periods of heightened tension, such as election campaigns and large-scale public protests. The impact on political debate, free exchange of opinions and compromise-building is profoundly negative. Violence and intimidation pressure politicians to self-censor when addressing politically sensitive issues and, in some cases, to step out of politics altogether. To counter this, several EU countries have adopted preventive and protective measures, including regular data collection. Examples include classifying offences against elected representatives as aggravated offences, simplifying reporting, and providing training, counselling and emergency assistance. Parliaments have also promoted civility and mutual respect in debates through codes of conduct and have established support services such as legal aid, psychological counselling and security assistance. El Ejército israelí confirmó este miércoles que, tras los exámenes realizados por el Instituto Nacional de Medicina Forense, el cuarto cuerpo entregado anoche por Hamás «no coincide con ninguno de los rehenes». «Hamás debe hacer todos los esfuerzos necesarios para devolver a los rehenes fallecidos», recoge el comunicado del Ejército. Esta pasada noche el grupo palestino, como parte del acuerdo del alto el fuego firmado con Israel, entregó otros cuatro cuerpos asegurando que todos ellos pertenecían a rehenes. Sin embargo, la Oficina del primer ministro israelí, Benjamín Netanyahu, aseguró esta mañana que solo tres de ellos pertenecían a cautivos cuyas familias ya fueron informadas. Los cuerpos identificados por el Instituto Nacional de Medicina Forense pertenecen a los rehenes Eitan Levy, de 53 años, el soldado Tamir Nimrodi, de 20 años y Uriel Baruch, de 35 años. Así, en la Franja de Gaza siguen quedando 21 cuerpos de rehenes en manos de las milicias palestinas. El retraso en la entrega de estos cuerpos, algo que ya se había previsto durante las negociaciones de este acuerdo por las toneladas de escombros que hay en Gaza, hizo que ayer el Gobierno israelí amenazara con restringir la entrada de ayuda humanitaria por el cruce de Rafah. Pese a la amenaza, este miércoles se reanudó la entrada de camiones con ayuda desde el cruce egipcio de Rafah hacia los pasos israelíes de Kerem Shalom y Al Auja, desde donde se permite el ingreso a la Franja de Gaza, un día después de que dichos cruces estuvieran cerrados, informó la televisión egipcia Al Qahera News. Un carabinero de la Sexta Comisaría de Recoleta resultó baleado en una pierna tras un forcejeo con un sujeto que estaba detenido durante la madrugada de este miércoles. El hecho ocurrió en el sector de Mallarauco, luego que vecinos denunciaran la presencia de personas bebiendo alcohol en la vía pública. Cuando los funcionarios policiales llegaron al lugar, se percataron que uno de los hombres tenía una orden de detención vigente. Según relató el fiscal Felipe Olivari, «cuando lo van a detener, esta persona se da a la fuga y después de una breve persecución, personal de Carabineros logra detenerlo. Cuando intentaban subirlo al vehículo policial, aparece otro sujeto de identidad desconocida, quien amenaza a personal de Carabineros con un elemento contundente, al parecer un ladrillo, por lo que uno de los funcionarios extrae su arma de servicio ante esta amenaza». «El detenido que mantenían con la orden pendiente, aprovechando esta circunstancia, intenta quitarle su arma de servicio al funcionario de Carabineros, se produce un forcejeo y es en este forcejeo donde esta arma se dispara, resultando herido el funcionario», precisó. El carabinero sufrió una lesión grave pero sin riesgo vital, por lo que fue trasladado hasta el hospital institucional.
